Custom motorcycles are as unique as the peoplewho ride them. Unlike stock motorcycles that havestandard designs and are mass-produced, customsare either modified bikes or are motorcycles builtto order. Custom motorcycles are one-of-a-kind.

Don’t be misled by motorcyclemanufacturers who use “Custom” in themodel name of a mass-producedmotorcycle. They are not true customs.

Most people think of choppers when it comes tocustom motorcycles. A traditional chopper-stylemotorcycle has high handlebars, long forks, and asmall front tire.Choppers are all about style, rather than

performance or comfort. True choppermotorcycles don’t have a rear suspension, so theyusually look a lot nicer than they ride.

Choppers with extended forks perform well in a straight line, but handlepoorly on curves and at slow speeds.

Customizing terms like bobber and chopper wereborn after World War II when bikers bobbed andchopped off unnecessary parts to improve theirbike’s performance on the racetrack.

Customizing a motorcycle means changingsomething on the bike to improve its performanceor to change its appearance, or both. A change canbe very simple like adding a comfortable new seat,or complicated like switching out an engine orexhaust system. But bikers don’t always have tochange something on a motorcycle to have acustom bike. Bike builders also build custommotorcycles from the frame up.

The first custom bike builders were ridersdissatisfied with the way their motorcyclesperformed or looked. Their only option was topark their bikes in the garage while they bobbedand chopped them to perfection. But now thephrase custom bike builder has a whole newmeaning. Custom bike shops are popping up all over.

A group of European bikers created the CaféRacer motorcycle in the 1950s. They modifiedtheir motorcycles to increase performance, addedracing fairings, and adjusted the position ofhandlebars and footpegs. Next, they plotted aracecourse. The course began at a café, went to apredetermined point, and then back to the samecafé. The object was to complete the course beforea song finished playing on the café’s jukebox.Modern café racers are still motorcycles that are

modified for speed and handling. However, theterm also describes a biker who prefers a classicBritish, Japanese, or Italian-made motorcycle builtduring the 1950s through the 1970s.

A motorcycle frame is the backbone of themachine. The frame holds all of the bikecomponents together, including the engine.Frames are built from metal tubes that are bent

and welded together. Sometimes the rear wheel isconnected directly to the frame; sometimes to aswing arm that connects to the frame.

A sturdy frame supports a powerful engine.

The more cylinders in a motorcycle engine, thesmoother the ride. A V-twin is a common type oftwo-cylinder engine. The cylinders are arrangedin an angled V shape.

A suspension system absorbs motion causedfrom bumps and dips in the road. A suspensionkeeps a rider comfortable while helping the bike’shandling. Most motorcycle suspensions includeshock absorbers in the rear and telescopic forks inthe front. Forks are metal tubes that connect thefront wheel to the frame. Telescopic forks are a setof inner and outer tubes that slide up and downabsorbing unwanted motion. Chassis is thesuspension and frame combined.

Panels and fenders are a motorcycle’sbodywork. Windshields and panels in front of therider are called fairings. Panels that cover theengine are cowlings. Not every rider wants bodywork, but for those

who do it’s a way to add a clean, sleek look to amotorcycle. Bikers can choose from severaldifferent molded shapes, designs, and colors—agreat way to customize a ride!
