  • FEATURES • Limiting Resolution 700 TV Lines. • Radiation Tolerance 106 Gy

(Gamma). • Extremely Compact & Lightweight. • 2/3" Pasecon Tube Standard . • Ruggedly Engineered. • Modular Design for Ease Of

Maintenance. • Sealed to 50 metres depth. • Built-in wide angle or zoom lens. • Genlock Facility Standard. • Fixed, 3:1, or 6:1 lens options.

DESCRIPTION The Puffin camera incorporates a Pasecon tube to provide excellent resolution, freedom

from image burn-in and good sensitivity over a wide spectral range within an extremely small, rugged package. The associated Camera Control Unit may be housed in a 2U rack-mounting module or a compact bench-mounting cabinet, and the multicore coupling cable, which may be up to 100 metres long, can be either PVC or special radiation-tolerant cable.

The camera housing is manufactured from stainless steel, and connection is made by a high quality LEMO 19 pole hermetically sealed underwater connector.

Care has been taken in the selection of components and materials to ensure that the camera head will survive and provide high quality pictures in environments subjected to high levels of ionising radiation; tests have been successfully completed at dose rates of 104 Gy/hour and total doses in excess of 106 Gy.

The camera head, which is built on modular lines, comprises the outer housing, the motorised lens, the tube and coil assembly, an interface board incorporating the main LEMO connector and coupling to the two surface-mount functional assemblies. All the major items are easily removed for repair or replacement, using only a screwdriver.

Specially developed printed circuit scanning coils in conjunction with wide-band video processing circuits ensure that the full potential of the Pasecon tube is realised.

A primary design aim has been virtually to eliminate the need for regular re-adjustment during the long operating life of the system; among its uncommon features is a tube beam current stabiliser, which ensures that, once set up, no further adjustment is necessary, the circuit compensating automatically as the tube's cathode emission falls off with age.

The circuits to generate the voltages and waveforms required by the camera head are located on two circuit boards in the separate Control Unit. Housed in a 2U rack-mounting module or a small bench-mounting cabinet (shown right), the CCU is organised in a similar manner to the camera, with an interface/mother board carrying the LEMO connector feeding the camera and the BNC connectors for two separate Video Outputs and the Genlock input. A third circuit board controls Auto/Manual gain and iris functions and also, via an IDC connector and ribbon cable, feeds the front panel controls and displays.

  • BACKGROUND Situations sometimes arise in nuclear inspection applications where a high quality image must be provided in the presence of considerable levels of radiation, but because of physical limitations in the number of cable cores or through connections, the usual approach using a separate camera head with a remote Camera Control Unit cannot be adopted.

Integral Television Camera With High Radiation Tolerance and Minimum External Connections

DESCRIPTION The camera is based on the radiation tolerant version of the existing PUFFIN

design; the functions of the CCU have, however, been shifted to the camera position, and the circuits redesigned to use mainly discrete components. Surface mount construction has kept the overall dimensions to the minimum.

The video signal from the camera is normally fed to the Control Unit using a balanced pair, and converted to a standard composite video waveform in the Control Unit. This arrangement has a number of advantages: it eliminates the need for a coaxial cable and cancels out external interference. However, for applications where a coaxial core is available, no lens controls are required and it is desired to eliminate the need for a control unit, a standard unbalanced signal is also available, suitable for direct application to a monitor.

A single DC supply is fed to the camera: discrete regulators and a synchronous inverter within the camera derive the required voltage rails.

In a typical system such as one using our PUFFIN high resolution camera fitted with a zoom lens, a 26 way cable is required, and this could be an embarrassment, for instance, in cases where all interconnections have to pass through a slip ring assembly.

It is to meet this type of requirement that the PETREL has been developed. A carefully chosen compromise, the design philosophy has deliberately avoided solutions which could achieve the absolute minimum number of conductors (i.e. a single coaxial) at the expense of increased complexity, degraded picture quality and reduced radiation tolerance.

  • Television Camera With High Radiation Tolerance, Colour Pictures and Minimum External Connections

DESCRIPTION The Petrel radiation-tolerant colour system uses a special Control Unit in conjunction with a high-powered LED illuminator to provide colour pictures from a basically monochrome camera, with high radiation tolerance. The only limitation on its use is that it functions best in relatively low levels of ambient light so that the main illumination source is the built-in illuminator. However, good results have been obtained in bright room lighting conditions of up to 850 lux. The scene to be recorded is exposed to alternate periods of red, green and blue light; in each case the period is 2 complete frames, sufficient to enable the camera to recover from its previous exposure; the second frame of each sequence is then written into one of three video memories, one for each of the three primary colours. The three memories are read out continuously and the resulting RGB signals are encoded into an PAL or NTSC video signal and fed out both as composite video and “S” video. Although the video images are of high quality, because of the relatively infrequent update rate of the store, any movement of the camera results in some “smearing”, so that the system is best used with relatively static subjects. To assist in the initial deployment of the camera, the light controls are so organised that a “continuous” lighting mode may be selected and a standard monochrome signal is then available for locating the scene of interest. This mode of operation also makes it easier to focus the lens. The “flashing” colour mode can then be selected to allow detailed examination and recording of the scene in full colour. As well as the standard video signals, a DV output is also available, which allows the user to feed the signal into a computer equipped with a “Firewire” port, (IEEE1394), and suitable software. In this way, video sequences or individual frames may be captured for later examination.

  • BACKGROUND The Plover has been developed to meet the need for a robust industrial inspection camera with simplicity of operation and remote control using the minimum number of conductors. Among its uses are boiler and pipe inspection in the electricity generating industry, including nuclear applications where the radiation level is relatively low and the greater cost of our purpose-built highly radiation-tolerant PETREL camera cannot be justified.

High Quality Solid State Television Camera with Minimal External Connections

DESCRIPTION The camera is based on a sensitive, inter-line transfer CCD sensor giving good resolution and image quality. The composite signal from the camera assembly is fed to a balanced video driver circuit to match the twisted pair in the cable; the Control Unit converts the balanced signals back to a conventional single-ended composite video waveform for application to a monitor. The balanced transmission system eliminates "earth loop" problems and minimises pickup from any nearby sources of interference. A single 12V DC supply is fed to the camera: a synchronous inverter within the camera derives the required voltage rails. Control signals for the lens functions, internal camera focus and Pan and Tilt unit are encoded in the Control Unit and superimposed on the video signal; they are decoded within the camera. Auto or manual iris and video gain operation can be selected from the Control Unit. Additional control channels can be provided on request for lamps, mirrors etc., and many special variants are available, including a model with a low-power illuminator utilising super-bright LEDs.

The camera has been designed to be functionally and mechanically completely compatible with the PETREL, so that the same Control Units and cables may be used, thus giving the user a choice of camera heads. Internal focus racking is incorporated, which may be manually operated or motorised for remote control. The camera uses a 1/2" CCD sensor with 750 x 578 elements, yielding exceptionally good resolution for this type of camera, of the order of 560 TV lines. The camera is normally connected via a 4 core cable, two cores (preferably a twisted pair) carrying balanced video signals while the remaining cores carry the 12V DC supply. Superimposed on the video signal (but invisible on the displayed image) are encoded pulses allowing control of a 3-function zoom lens with selectable auto or manual iris control, auto or manual video gain control and internal focus racking providing macro focus.

  • High Quality Colour Solid State Television Camera With Many Advanced features.

DESCRIPTION The ICD207 models are high quality solid state colour television cameras of extremely compact dimensions, based upon a 1/4" interline transfer sensor organised as 578 rows of 752 elements, providing resolution of 530 TV lines.

Housed in a rugged stainless steel case measuring only 75 mm, diameter, the camera includes a 36:1 zoom lens and incorporates auto or manual focus (set from the Control Unit) and focuses down to 80mm zoomed IN or 35mm when zoomed OUT.

Electrical interfacing is by a LEMO or Fischer hermetically sealed connectors and a cable incorporating 3 twisted pairs – this avoids the need for complex and expensive cables with mixed coaxial and single conductor cores, and also improves EMC performance. When fitted to out compatible PT550 pan and tilt unit, the camera supplies are looped through the unit and decoding circuits within the camera provide the drive signals for the pan and tilt functions.

Features include very good resistance to "blooming", low lag, excellent sensitivity, perfect positional geometry and virtual immunity from vibration and magnetic fields, making the camera ideal for many industrial and control applications.

The associated Control Unit incorporates push buttons for a wide range of functions:

Auto or Manual focus, optical Zoom over a range of 36:1 plus digital zoom providing a further 12:1 range with reducing image quality. Zoom speed can be selected to be Fast or Slow.

Other remotely controllable functions include back-light compensation, Left/Right image inversion (for use when viewing through a mirror) and image stabilisation, which greatly improves image quality when the camera is subjected to vibration or shaking.

Video outputs are Y/C and composite, and an option of Digital Video (Firewire) is also available, to allow images to be fed to a computer for archiving.

A single DC supply is fed to the camera: discrete regulators and a synchronous inverter within the camera derive the required voltage rails.

    • Control of 36:1 zoom lens and other functions using pulses encoded and superimposed onto the video waveform – control of compatible Pan and Tilt unit also included.

    Pan & Tilt PT700 Series

DESCRIPTION This is a rugged radiation-tolerant unit designed primarily for use with the IRC400 series of cameras, though it may also be used with other TV cameras. The unit is normally sealed to IP65, but can also be supplied in underwater form, to IP68 for use down to 50 metres depth. The standard unit contains a demultiplexer/drive board to enable it to be operated from the pulses encoded onto the video signal which are standard in this series of cameras. Alternatively, when used with the Kingfisher series cameras, control signals are decoded within the camera, so that only relays are needed to operate the unit. The only additional cabling requirement is a 24V DC supply at approximately 0.5A for the drive motors. These are rugged, high-quality 24V DC motors employing rare-earth magnets and coupled via planetary gear heads to the final output gears, giving very low backlash and preventing back-driving. The output shafts of the unit are carried on double row ball-races for strength and stability. The unit can carry loads of up to 8 Kg, and both pan and tilt speeds are approximately 7.5º/second. The input connector is carried on the mounting base of the unit and the connections to the camera and lighting assembly are carried on the “up and over” platform to minimise external cables. Adjustable stops are provided, accessible from inside the unit. The unit contains a voltage regulator providing 12V DC for the camera from a range of input voltages from 12.5 – 22V; it is normally connected so as to act as a link between the incoming multi-core cable and the camera and lighting unit (if fitted). The standard unit is manufactured from black anodised aluminium alloy, but for underwater use, a stainless steel version is available. The unit is usually fitted with a substantial mounting base for stability, with both tapped and clearance holes to allow a variety of mounting options. The details of this may be varied to suit customer requirements.

High Power LED Illuminator Suited to High Pressure Underwater Applications

    Illuminator - LA700

DESCRIPTION The LA-730 is a powerful underwater illuminator utilising the latest high-efficiency solid – state lights. Because of the efficiency of the light sources, the heat generated is considerably less than it would be from an incandescent lamp of equivalent output. Two modes of operation are provided – a reduced power mode for continuous operation in air and a “boosted” mode for underwater use, where the water provides cooling. An additional benefit is that the lamp can be dimmed without change of colour temperature, so that it is ideal for use with colour cameras.. The maximum light output from the 30° model is 5000 Candelas, which gives an illumination of 5000 lux at 1 metre, 320 lux at 4 metres and 50 lux at 10 metres. This increases to approximately 7000 candelas when the higher current mode is selected for underwater use’ The control unit is housed in a 2U rack-mounting module and is available in various configurations – it may contain supplies for up to four of the illuminators. Controls on the front panel allow for the separate adjustment of the two sections of up to four lamps units, with potentiometers incorporating ON/OFF switches. Operation of the unit is from a 50/60 Hz supply between 100 – 240V, with no need to make any adjustment for different supply voltages.

High Power Miniature LED Illuminator Suited Colour Camera Inspection Systems

    Illuminator - LA767

DESCRIPTION The LA767 is a miniature lighting unit for use with high quality colour cameras such as our Kingfisher range. It provides an even white illumination and has a much longer useful life than equivalent quartz-halogen units. An additional benefit is that the lamp can be dimmed without change of colour temperature, making it is ideal for use with colour cameras. The LA767 is also very efficient, dissipating approximately 15 watts for a light output of approximately 4500 candelas at a beam width of 15º. The light itself contains no infra-red , so the beam does not cause any heating, which can be important in certain inspection processes. The unit operates in conjunction with a constant current power supply which is usually incorporated into the control unit of the camera. This allows a smooth control of the light output from full down to zero. As a rough guide, a pair of LA767 units will allow clear pictures to be obtained by a Kingfisher camera at distances up to 10 Metres from the point of interest. The unit can be produced in three beam widths, 25º flood, 15º standard, or 5º spot with corresponding changes in usable distance. An underwater version with a slight size increase can also be produced.

DESCRIPTION This unit has been designed to provide a high level of illumination for inspection in conjunction with our range of radiation tolerant cameras such as the PUFFIN series. It is based on a 50W quartz-halogen lamp with integral dichroic reflector in a compact housing which is fitted with a fused silica faceplate and is designed for operating in hostile environments. The illuminator provides an output of >1500 Candelas and covers an angle of approximately 36º. The control unit LTCU230 is designed to supply power to two LA224 illuminators, allowing brightness to be separately controlled. The unit incorporates special features to help prolong the life of the lamps: whenever the unit is switched off, the brightness is automatically reduced to zero, so that the lamps always start from zero brightness and on switch-on, the supply is gently increased to the level that was previously in use. In addition, thermistors are incorporated to prevent surges in the case of intermittent mains supplies. The control unit is housed in a standard 3U rack-mounting module and operates from a 115V 50-60Hz mains supply

Radiation Tolerant Quick Release Mechanism for Swapping Cameras Using Manipulators.

    Hot Shoes HSR Series

DESCRIPTION These devices allow quick disconnection of TV camera assemblies operating in hazardous areas subject to radiation or chemical contamination where it is desirable to minimise exposure of personnel. They give a secure attachment for cameras, housings or complete assemblies including pan and tilt units yet permit mechanical and electrical disconnection in a few seconds with no need for tools. With appropriate handling attachments, they can be used with manipulators, entirely eliminating the need for human intervention. There are two models, the HSR250 allowing for 10 low voltage circuits while the other, the HSR6911, provides in addition for a mains supply (Live, Neutral and Earth). The coupling action is achieved by lowering the detachable portion onto the fixed portion and rotating it clockwise through 30° until it latches into position. Uncoupling is the reverse of this, the initial movement requiring additional torque to unlatch the locking spring mechanism. The unit may be mounted either upright or inverted, the latching action being completely secure. Cable entry to each portion is via glands which may be varied to suit the requirement. The fixed element is provided with 4 blind tapped holes for attachment, while the detachable element has 4 clearance holes counter bored to allow socket head screws to be fitted from the inside. The detachable or passive section carries the spring-loaded male contacts, and the “wiping” angle is so arranged that it is impossible for the wrong contacts to engage. Additional spacing is provided for the three mains contacts to ensure adequate clearance and provide a generous creepage distance.

Control Units Designed for Use with Multiple Cameras Controlled from a Single Location.

    Multi-Camera Systems

DESCRIPTION This system has been designed to allow up to 16 cameras to be displayed and controlled from several different control desks. Each control desk may be configured to display and control any number of the cameras in the system – for each selector switch position, a 16 way PCB switch is provided which is easily accessible within the control unit. Typically, the control unit is mounted in a wall-mounting housing and the control panel is coupled to it via a small-diameter flexible cable. The control panel may be added to an existing console or supplied in its own keyboard-style housing. A line of text can be pre - programmed for each camera to describe its position or function when selected. A further line of text describes the control status for the camera selected. An interlock system prevents the same camera being simultaneously controlled from more than one station. When a particular camera is selected at a given control station, as soon as any control button is pressed, that station is given exclusive control and all others are locked out for 30 seconds. On the controlling station monitor screen, the message CONTROL ESTABLISHED is displayed, while if the same camera is selected at any other position, the monitor carries the warning ANOTHER USER HAS CONTROL. This condition persists for 30 seconds after the last control command, after which the camera may be selected at any control position. If a particular camera is non-operational or if a select button has been set to display a position where no camera is present, the message NO CAMERA SELECTED is displayed.

Radiation Tolerant Control System for use with Simple Cable Camera Systems.

    Multiplex Control System

DESCRIPTION The CCL remote control multiplex system allows the cabling in a typical TV camera installation to be greatly simplified. By encoding pulses on the video signal, the number of conductors required can be reduced to just 2 for the power supply and 2 for the video signal, which may either be transmitted via a coaxial cable or a twisted pair; in the latter case a very low cost and readily available cable may be used. The standard system allows for the control of up to 16 On/Off functions; this may be increased to 32 for special requirements and proportional control is also possible.

By encoding the pulses and superimposing them on the video signal during the field blanking interval, there is no interference with the visible picture. In the standard system, the pulses are sent every other field, so that by transmitting a second train of pulses during the normally unused field, the number of control channels may be doubled. The system has been implemented in both standard and radiation - tolerant forms; the necessary circuits are quite compact and are usually built using surface – mount technology. The output can be in the form of direct drive from semiconductors or via relay contacts, the latter providing a more flexible and rugged solution. A typical application might comprise a camera with zoom lens, control being provided for zoom and focus functions, auto/manual iris operation, internal camera focus to allow close-up viewing, control of a pan and tilt unit and lighting On/Off. Auto/Manual video gain with proportional control of the gain is also feasible. In the Petrel, Plover and Kingfisher cameras, de-multiplexing and drive circuits are already integrated into the cameras and pan and tilt units, but separate de-multiplex boards can also be supplied which can be used with any camera, lens and pan and tilt assembly. When required, special designs can be provided to meet customers’ individual requirements.
