    Automotive industry in India

The Automotive industry in India is one of the largest in the world and one of the fastestgrowing globally. India manufactures over 11 million 2 and 4-wheeled vehicles and exportsabout 1.5 million every year.It is the world's second largest manufacturer of motorcycle, withannual sales exceeding 8.5 million in 2009. India's passenger car and commercial vehiclemanufacturing industry is the seventh largest in the world with an annual production of more

than 2.6 million units in 2009. In 2009, India emerged as Asia's fourth largest exporter ofpassenger cars, behind Japan, South Korea and Thailand.

As of 2009, India is home to 40 million passenger vehicles and more than 1.5 million cars weresold in India in 2009 (an increase of 26%), making the country the second fastest growingautomobile market in the world. By 2050, the country is expected to top the world in carvolumes with approximately 611 million vehicles on the nation's roads. A major chunk ofIndia's car manufacturing industry is based in and around the city of Chennai (also known as"Detroit of India"), with the Indian city accounting for 60 per cent of the country's automotiveexports. Chakan corridor near Pune, Maharashtra is another prominent vehicular production hub

with General Motors, Volkswagen/ Skoda, Mahindra and Mahindra in the process of setting upor already set up facilities. Halol in Gujarat, Gurgaon neighboring New Delhi, Aurangabad, inMaharashtra, Kolkatta in West Bengal are some of the other automotive manufacturing regionsaround the country.

Following economic liberalization in India in 1991, the Indian automotive industry hasdemonstrated sustained growth as a result of increased competitiveness and relaxed restrictions.Several Indian automobile manufacturers such as Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki and Mahindraand Mahindra, expanded their domestic and international operations. India's robust economicgrowth led to the further expansion of its domestic automobile market which attractedsignificant India-specific investment by multinational automobile manufacturers. In February2009, monthly sales of passenger cars in India exceeded 100,000 units.

The first car ran on India's roads in 1897. Till the 1930s, cars were imported directly.Embryonic automotive industry emerged in India in the 1940s. Following the independence, in1947, the Government of India and the private sector launched efforts to create an automotivecomponent manufacturing industry to supply to the automobile industry. However, the growthwas relatively slow in the 1950s and 1960s due to nationalisation and the license raj whichhampered the Indian private sector.

In the 1980s, a number of Japanese manufacturers launched joint-ventures for buildingmotorcycles and light commercial-vehicles. It was at this time that the Indian government choseSuzuki for its joint-venture to manufacture small cars. Following the economic liberalisation in1991 and the gradual weakening of the license raj, a number of Indian and multi-national carcompanies launched operations. Since then, automotive component and automobilemanufacturing growth has accelerated to meet domestic and export demands.

Mahindra planned to sell the diesel SUVs and pickup trucks starting in late 2010 in NorthAmerica[ through an independent distributor, Global Vehicles USA, based in Alpharett,Georgia. Mahindra announced it will import pickup trucks from India in knockdown kit (CKD)form to circumvent the Chicken tax. CKDs are complete vehicles that will be assembled in theU.S. from kits of parts shipped in crates.

On 18 October 2010, however, it was reported that Mahindra had indefinitely delayed thelaunch of vehicles into the North American market, citing legal issues between it and GlobalVehicles after Mahindra retracted its contract with Global Vehicles earlier in 2010, due to adecision to sell the vehicles directly to consumers instead of through Global Vehicles.

    HISTORY OF MAHINDRA AND MAHINDRA

The birth of Mahindra & Mahindra began when K.C. Mahindra visited the United States ofAmerica as Chairman of the India Supply Mission. He met Barney Roos, inventor of the rugged'general purpose vehicle' or Jeep and had a flash of inspiration: wouldn't a vehicle that had

proved its invincibility on the battlefields of World War II be ideal for India's rugged terrain and

    its kutcha rural roads?

Swift action followed thought. The Mahindra brothers joined hands with a distinguishedgentleman called Ghulam Mohammed. And, on October 2nd, 1945, Mahindra & Mohammedwas set up as a franchise for assembling jeeps from Willys, USA.
