products),  and  their  application  in  the  solution  of  industrial  and  environmental problems.  Some  of  these  materials  are  already  in  the  stage  of  industrial production, or under testing by companies to evaluate their industrial use. On the other  hand,  the  second  main  objective  of  the  research  is  the  training  of  young researchers, as shown by the 46 graduate students supervised for their Ph.D thesis Many of them are now professors at Spanish universities or researchers in public and private enterprises.  Two of the articles are among the most ever cited articles published in the journal Carbon and these are the most worlwide cited articles in Chemistry of the University of Alicante. It is to be noted that the number of citations per average article in the last ten years is 20, the total number of citations being above 5.500. The index “h” is 39 in 2009 (search at Web of Knowledge: AU=(RODRIGUEZ$REINOSO F NOT RODRIGUE F*) OR (AU=RODRIGUE.F* AND TS=(CARBON*OR PYRO*)) OR AU=(REINOSO FR) OR AU=(RODRIGUEZ-REINOSO E NOT RODRIGUE.RE) OR AU=(RODRIGUEZREINOSO R AND GUERRERORUIZ A) OR RODRIGUE.R AND MARTINRO.A). The recognized contribution to the research and development in the field of carbon materials lead to the designation of Editor of the international journal Carbon in 1991, and continues in this position since then.

RESEARCH INTERESTS  A. CARBON MATERIALS  Porous carbons:

The design, development and description-characterisation of porous materials,

especially activated carbons, is essential not only for the control of environmental pollution but also for satisfying the increasing demand of purity in natural and

synthetic products. The research carried out in the last years (18 Ph.D. thesis

supervised in this area), which is continued today, has permitted an in-depth

knowledge of all processes implied in the preparation of activated carbon, and this has

been used to propose new manufacturing routes, either to solve specific problems

(purification and separation of gases, removal of odors, gas storage, etc.), or to be able

to prepare materials with defined pore size distributions to be used as models for the

analysis of the adsorption process. We have developed new forms of adsorbents such as

activated carbon cloths and felts (already in industrial production in Cocentaaine, Alicante), carbon molecular sieves, or monoliths for gas storage (in the stage of

optimization for a Brasilian company). On the other hand, our studies led to the

installation of the first industry in Spain to produce activated carbon (from olive

stones, ICASA, 1997).

A new international project has been very recently awarded to Prof. Rodríguez-Reinoso

in collaboration with Prof. K. Kaneko, in Chiba (Japan) to study the use of

nanostructured carbon monoliths for the storage and conversion of methane.

Carbon supported Catalysts:

A similar approach has been used to analyze the effect of the chemistry of the carbon

surface on the adsorption process of molecules with different properties, and this

research has open a new field of applications not considered a few years ago. One of

these applications is heterogeneous catalysis based on metal catalysts supported on

carbon. The research carried out up to now (6 Ph.D. thesis supervised in this field) has made possible to be able to establish the porosity and chemistry of the carbon

surface required for an appropriate dispersion of the active phase. Furthermore, this

has permitted the preparation of catalysts with adequate catalytic activity and

selectivity for many reactions of interest in the area of Fine Chemicals, such as the

selective hydrogenation of the carbonyl group in unsaturated aldehydes.

As from October 2004,to 2009 the research group participated as Core group in the European Network of Excellence “InsidePores”.

A good measure of the world-wide repercussion of the research carried out in these two areas is the fact that between 1999 and 2000 there were requests to write three long chapters for Encycopledias or Handbooks: The Encycolpedia of Materials: Science and Technology (Elsevier, 2001); Handbook of Surface and Interfaces of Materials (Academic Press, 2001); Handbook of Porous Solids (Wiley-VCH, 2002) and a book on “Activated Carbon”, published by Elsevier last 2006.

Other carbon materials:

A similar approach has been used for the development of other materials. An in-depth

analysis of the chemistry and kinetics of the processes has permitted a better understanding of the mechanisms involved, and this was later used for the new

developments.

In the case of non-porous carbon materials such as isotropic graphite, the main effort

was centered in reaching a better understanding of the complex mechanisms involved

in the pyrolysis of petroleum residues. The control of the carbon mesophase formation

and the subsequent separation from the isotropic phase provided the self-sintering

precursor for the isotropic graphite needed for the manufacture of pistons and seals (9

Ph.D. thesis supervised). This research resulted in the first European patent on

self-sintering mesophase for the production of isotropic graphite filed for the company

Page 9: CV in English 2009 - facciencias.uniandes.edu.coweb/solidos... · 1 Curriculum Vitae Francisco Rodríguez‐Reinoso University of Alicante. Alicante. Spain March 2010

9

Repsol_YPF. Furthermore, the basic knowledge of the mechanism of pyrolysis has also

been used to further improve the material via heteroatom doping. In this case, the

copyrolysis of the petroleum residue with soluble compounds of boron or silicon has

been used instead of the traditional infiltration or chemical vapour deposition

techniques. Copyrolysis resulted in a much more homogeneous distribution of the

heteroatom through the carbon matrix, thus improving the mechanical and rheological

properties of the graphite.

These last research lines have been the base of several European projects (Brite-Euram and Growth) undertaken along the last nine years, and resulted in the material used to produce pistons for vehicle engines, already under optimization and testing. This research field of the group has been awarded a European Integrated Project (ExtreMat) for the period 2005-2009. The invitation to the group to participate was based on the expertise in the field of doped carbon materials needed to build the wall of fusion reactors or as protection for re-entry of spatial vehicles.

B. OTHER NON-CARBON MATERIALS

Heterogeneous catalysis has also been studied using catalysts not supported on carbon

but on other types of support, mainly on partially reducible oxides such as CeO2, TiO2,

ZnO, etc. 5 Ph.D. thesis were supervised in this field.

In the case of structural ceramics, the research carried out has been mainly concerned

with the mechanisms of formation of silicon carbide, silicon nitride and phases such as

sialon. The research has pointed out the important role of catalysts (mainly iron, cobalt

and nickel) in the formation and growth of whiskers, of great technological importance.

The same approach has been used for the synthesis of new composite materials, and it has been possible to find new routes for the synthesis of ceramic-ceramic composites

such as SiC-MoSi2, avoiding the problems associated to previous methods. 3 Ph.D.

thesis were supervised in this area of research.

The rest of 5 Ph.D. thesis supervised correspond to a variety of materials ranging

from intercalation compounds of graphite, to graphite, use of industrial wastes , etc.
