Managing a team of people across 3 sites as I did with Leyland Daf provided its own challenges and project management was key to my engineering roles. Accounting, auditing & finance I have been working in the Manx financial sector for 20 years within Greystone and its predecessor entities. I have been the auditor of a range of companies, both local and international, in a variety of sectors. These have included AIM and Plus listed organisations and have been in varied sectors, notably Manx regulated financial, insurance, mining and media. I have had to make audit visits to Europe and Asia. From this work I have developed knowledge of financial reporting, especially under the UK and IFRS systems. It has been essential that I am able to connect with staff at all levels as I have needed to take unpleasant news to Boards and to persuade clerks and shop floor staff to provide me with information. Besides auditing I have worked with companies to provide management information. This usually involved working with management to identify and analyse the important factors to them, such as sales mixes, and thence providing meaningful reporting. Professional Summary for Ian Cook

I am a Chartered Accountant (FCA) and a Chartered Engineer through the Institute of Materials Minerals and Mining (MIMMM, C.Eng). My latest roles are as a director of Greystone Trust Company Limited and as a consultant for Greystone LLC from which I have recently retired. I am applying to research for a part-time PhD at the University of Birmingham, but will continue to be island based.

Skill SetManagement – Business, project, staff, client, changeFor most of my career I have had to learn and apply various management skills. From 2006 to 2013 I was the running the accountancy practice for Greystone as well as being an executive director in the trust company. During this time the staff rose from 8 to 20 people and we were shortlisted for an Isle of Man Business Award for Excellence and our turnover grew continuously. Managing client expectations is a key aspect of running these businesses. Managing a team of people across 3 sites as I did with Leyland Daf provided its own challenges and project management was key to my engineering roles.

Accounting, auditing & financeI have been working in the Manx financial sector for 20 years within Greystone and its predecessor entities.

Company secretarial & legalAs an executive director of Greystone Trust Company Limited (an IoM FSA regulated entity) a large part of my responsibility was to act as a client company director and to administer and operate those companies in accordance with applicable law and practice. As such I needed a good familiarity with company law, and needed awareness of law not only in the Isle of Man but other jurisdictions such as the UK, BVI etc. As a qualified company secretary I have an obligation (which I have met) to keep up to date with such legislation. Part of directorial responsibility is to ensure an orderly wind up of a company when its useful life has ended. I have acted as the liquidator for numerous Manx companies and am able to advise on the desirability of various cessation routes. Such appointments have included court supervised liquidations as part of much larger reconstruction schemes.

Isle of Man regulatory complianceSince I ceased as a shareholder in Greystone Trust Company Limited my role has been more non-executive but I continued my role as MLRO (Monet Laundering Reporting Officer) until very recently and still act as the Compliance Officer. Within the company we believe that providing a compliance route to board level that bypasses the full executives provides a valuable safeguard against potential conflicts.

AnalysisAs noted above I have needed to demonstrate analytical skills to provide management with useful information. These skills are both verbal (to extract what is required, and what may already be being recorded, and to present numeric data) and numeric and calculative (to turn raw data into usable information). Besides identifying appropriate management information I have used such skills for valuation purposes.

Familiarity with engineering, materials and quality management

For the first half of my career I was a metallurgical based engineer or scientist. I am still a registered Chartered Engineer and make attempts to keep my familiarity with the subject up to date. However the skills and knowledge from that period can be very relevant. My knowledge of quality management is applicable to most of the companies and entities I deal with, especially when combined with my analytical skills. There are too many occasions when things go wrong because the systems in place have not been critically appraised in the light of an organisations specific needs. Occasionally too my specific metallurgical knowledge is relevant - for example when I have been auditing a gold mine in Uzbekistan.

Career highlightsGreystone growth Greystone grew out of the Isle of Man practice of BDO International. Following my acquisition of the practice in June 2006 I reorganised the work into two more focussed companies for accountancy and corporate work under the Greystone banner. The focussed management structure paid dividends and turnover doubled within two years and allowed us to provide proper staffing levels to serve the business.

Jerooy valuationWhile acting as auditor for the Oxus Gold group the management had a serious issue when the Kyrgyzstan government revoked the operating licence for the Jerooy gold mine prospect. I was commissioned at short notice to report on the valuation of the prospect for compensation and arbitration purposes. My visit to the mine site was, I am told, a major item on Kyrgyz television news that day.

Merging Leyland Daf laboratoriesDuring my time with Leyland Daf I identified and actioned the opportunity to bring both the assembly plant and component plant laboratories under common management thus allowing commonality of approach and cost and efficiency benefits.

Demonstrating Trent engine intercasing and establishing the safety caseAt Rolls-Royce I was developing the use of large castings in aeroengines. A highlight was to be able to demonstrate the production of a cast titanium intercasing (between the compressor and the combustion area) for the then new Trent engine and to write the safety specification for this vital part which connects the engine to the aircraft.

Globe management accounts and audit support & thence pitching for EV workGlobe was a reinsurance subsidiary of a major insurer. As a subcontractor I produced the management accounts and carried out the financial management function and also dealt with the auditors. As a result of the success of this relationship I was invited to pitch for a similar role for another special project which the insurer carried out on the island. The pitch was successful and beneficial to both parties.
