Course Syllabi, Assignments, and Other Materials

EDUC 331—Educational Technology and Assessment Received a TILT/Reinvention Center Science of Learning Course Development Competition award in 2013–2014 to improve EDUC 331, a course for preservice teachers focused on technology-enhanced learning and assessment. The course was redesigned to incorporate research skills and self-directed learning, and incorporates highly effective case-study examples from local school districts. Case-study examples were developed to explore cross-disciplinary TEL issues (an example can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEl9sIA0J9o). The grant application and syllabi have been included in Appendix C—Section 3. EDOD 692B—Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) Developed a course on technology-enhanced learning (TEL). The course has been designed as part of a three-course certificate program on on-demand high-performance solutions. The course explores emergent learning theories and an assessment methodology for designing OD-HD solutions. The course was developed for the Organizational Learning Performance and Change program. A course syllabi has been included in Appendix C—Section 3.

Peer Evaluations of Teaching

Dr. William Timpson, Professor, School of Education, CSU: Dr. Timpson conducted midsemester student feedback and evaluation of EDUC 331—Educational Technology and Assessment in the spring semester, 2008. In his feedback method, he includes both appreciations and concerns, and recommendations for the course at the midpoint. Overall, the students appreciated the content, considering it to be “valuable.” The students were particularly interested in the innovative nature of using RSS feeds for learning. In addition, Dr. Timpson noted that the students appreciated the organized nature of the course. In regards to concerns, students recommended that less time be spent on the blogging assignment, which they found less relevant. Additionally, they suggested that the course be reformatted, into a shorter class that met twice a week. Students noted that it was difficult to maintain continuity from class to class when the class only met once during the week. (See Appendix A—Section 1 for Dr. Timpson’s midsemester review form.)

Excerpts From Student Course Surveys (and solicited letters)

EDUC 331—Educational Technology and Assessment

“This was a very helpful class. I wish I would have taken a technology class every semester. I learned so much that I feel better prepared for teaching… This has been one of my favorite and most useful classes [that] I have taken at CSU.” (EDUC 331, fall 2014). “It is hard for me to pick a moment to talk about because every moment in the class was amazing. I do know that when I teach I can only hope that I model the teachings that I learned from Dr. Folkestad in my classroom.” (Austin Campbell – EDUC 331, spring, 2014). (See Appendix C—Section 2: Solicited Letters). “As a student in the college of education, I am very fortunate to have excellent professors. Dr. James Folkestad, however, is far better than excellent—he is truly an extraordinary professor. As a student in his EDUC 331 class, we focused primarily on the use of technology in the classroom, and I firmly believe that his instruction and creative lesson planning have made me a better teacher.” (Chris Colson— EDUC 331, spring, 2014). (See Appendix C—Section 2: Solicited Letters). “The professor was very accommodating and helpful. Any problem/trouble/difficulty that I experienced was immediately aided and my understanding of technology was increased. Folkestad was always there, ready, willing, and able to help.” (EDUC 331, spring 2014). “Thank you for the fun and informative semester. Your teaching style really helped things flow smoothly and make sense.” (EDUC 331, fall 2013). “Overall, this class was pretty nice. I might use some of this technology in future classes. I wish there were more relevant applications to my content area, science (Google Earth). Folkestad was a good professor and had a good teaching style. I liked that he used time effectively and efficiently.” (EDUC 331, spring 2013).

James  E.  Folkestad,  PhD

  28

“I very much enjoyed this class! I learned a lot about utilizing computers/Internet in the classroom, and Dr. Folkestad is very helpful.” (EDUC 331, spring 2012). “Thanks for a great semester. I went into this class thinking it would be a waste of time, but you really taught me a lot and everything I learned will be very useful!” (EDUC 331, fall 2011). “I really enjoyed the class and learned very useful tools for teaching.” (EDUC 331, spring 2011). “I really learned a lot in this course, and not just how to use technology but also how important it is in education! It was a fun course with appropriate coursework! Thanks!” (EDUC 331, spring 2010). “This class was absolutely amazing; Dr. Folkestad taught with excitement and relevance, making this the best class of my semester. The course focused on relevant topics, and it has been the most useful in my college career.” (EDUC 331, spring, 2010, Section 4).

EDOD 692—Technology Enhanced Learning and EDUC 530—Computer Applications in Effective Instruction (graduate course)

“It was rapidly evident that the experience of the course was going to challenge my thought and promote my own learning; what was not as immediately clear was the long-term impact it would have on my doctoral journey and my continued thinking and work in the professional world…. I have had the opportunity to work with some incredible teachers and learners throughout my career, and I use Jim as a bellwether for effectiveness.” (Sean Evans, graduate student and advisee). (See Appendix C—Section 2: Solicited Letters). “He provided a strong knowledge base in the area of technology and social networks. As I was preparing for the proposal defense, the IRB group was leery of my topic and continued to ask for supporting information in order to approve the research. Dr. Folkestad was very supportive and continued to guide me in how to maneuver the IRB and the skepticism of the group. It was comforting to have a person who was knowledgeable in technology to turn to for guidance.” (Ron Hicks, graduate student and PhD advisee). (See Appendix C—Section 2: Solicited Letters).

 Other Activities / Accomplishments—Service/Outreach

I have consistently served Colorado State University to advance the use of technology in teaching and learning. The following quotations from campus leaders recognize the significance of my leadership and innovative accomplishments:

“Jim is an campus innovator; he has gone well beyond applying technology to instruction but has truly used technology to transform his teaching. He has also helped many others rethink their approach to teaching and the integration of technology; this is why his peers selected him to be a TILT Senior Fellow.” (Mike Plamquist, Associate Provost for Instructional Innovation) “Jim is my go-to faculty member when it comes to thinking strategically about IT on this campus. I rely on his expertise and his willingness to share it with others to push IT innovation in the area of teaching and learning.” (Pat Burns, VP for Information Technologies)
