Summary

I graduated from Heriot Watt University in 2008 with an Honours BSc (2.1) in IT. Immediately following my degree I went to work for the Pragma (who were then known as the Amor Group and are now part of Lockheed Martin). I have worked there continuously, spending most of my time in two assignments. The first involved working as part of the Amor support group based at Cairn Energy Plc Headquarters. There, I was able to develop my customer facing skills and to greatly improving my network, printing and telephony (both land line and mobile) knowledge. After Cairn, I spent several weeks working across a number of sites providing both holiday cover and server room audits before receiving my second major assignment, to the Edinburgh Trams project. At Edinburgh Trams I provided desktop support to a range of companies engaged on that project. As the sole IT support for this contract, I was able to develop my ability to plan my work activities in the context of rival demands and to work independently. I currently work for the University of Edinburgh, based at Easter Bush veterinary campus where I was involved in supporting around 3000 users across the campus, both staff and students. It was here that I was exposed to office 365 and office 2013 as well as a wide range of specialist medical technology.

Key Roles

Desktop Support – I have knowledge and skills in supporting a wide variety of desktop products including; Office 365, 2013, 2010 and 2007 as well as Adobe Products (Creative Cloud, Reader, Photoshop, Flash, etc.), Microsoft Active Directory, and a number of other products. I am also involved in hardware diagnosis and replacement.

Laptops / Desktops – I image and build new desktops and laptops that are being deployed to users. In past positions I have also created the new images when a new model of PC is released and the older ones are being discontinued.

Office – I am able to resolve various Outlook or other Office application-based problems, and when I receive one that I have not dealt with before I feel I am effective at researching the issue and finding a solution.

Purchasing – Raising Purchase Orders for the IT department, ensuring that stock levels and desktops/laptops and print toner as well as small items never get too low. Requesting and processing quotes from suppliers, and making sure items and goods are received in time.

Telephony - Blackberry / iPhone – In previous positions I have coordinated with BT and Vodafone to ensure that our accounts were working; I created new mobile accounts and deployed new Blackberries and iPhones, as well as providing support for them.

Fireworks, Adobe Photoshop and the new creative cloud system. I gained this experience through several modules on picture editing and multimedia design taken while I was at Heriot Watt University, and built on this during my time in the companies I have worked for.

I well versed in preparing electronic presentations using internet resources. I also enjoy challenging IT problems where research is required to reach a resolution.

Effective Communication

Over my career to date, I have developed a strong ability to communicate with the users. This was originally developed through my work at Lloyds TSB and was strengthened during my time at Cairn Energy. It has been further reinforced in the course of my latest assignment at Edinburgh Trams, where, I spent a significant amount of time co-ordinating with different office managers for the various Edinburgh Trams sites that I supported. In my current position I interact directly with users in order to either resolve their problem over the phone (to get them back to work quickly) or to schedule a time in which I can meet with them at their office to discuss their issue and try to resolve it. My user feedback-ratings confirm that I have a good customer-facing attitude.

Problem Solving

While working at Lockheed Martin, I enjoyed receiving tough problems to solve. I thoroughly enjoy working with desktop hardware and dealing with the issues that users encounter in using their PCs and printers etc. Over the course of my career to date, when a user issue covers several areas I have learned to think several steps ahead and I feel that I have good problem solving skills. The experience I have gained in my current position has allowed me to broaden those problem solving skills as having to work with medical specialist technology meant large amounts of research needed to be done before a problem could be solved. I learned to sift through data and find the right answer as efficiently as possible.

Technical Skills

I am very comfortable working with hardware, e.g., diagnosing and repairing broken parts inside a PC.

I have previously spent time administering a Blackberry Exchange Server

I have experience and knowledge in a wide variety of systems; I list below those in which I feel I am most competent:

Microsoft Office

Adobe Reader + Photoshop

Active Directory

Microsoft Exchange and Outlook

Norton Ghost

I am keen to keep learning, and relish change and the opportunity to learn and master new systems.

Employment History

April 2014 – Now - Edinburgh University (Easterbush Campus)

Technical Support Officer

I was based at Easter Bush Campus, the universities Veterinary school, responsible for supporting both staff and students in the small animal and equine hospitals as well as the Roslin Institute and the main veterinary school. Main my responsibilities included both hardware and software support, including diagnosis of hardware faults, repairs and replacements and software installs, orders and fixing of problems. I experienced a shift from Office 2010 to 2013 while working in this position which provided a new learning experience. I also created new user accounts, security groups and managed email accounts. Our email was handled using Office365 cloud system, which provided both benefits and negatives to the users and the administrators. As part of this position I was exposed to many medical systems and software that I had never supported before and this provided an enjoyable challenge of learning and supporting such systems.

June 2008 – March 2014 (Lockheed Martin – IT Outsourcing):

June 2012 – March 2014 – Lockheed Martin

Desktop Support Engineer – sited at the Edinburgh Trams Project.

I was the sole member of IT department for the main project team (140 staff) based in 5 sites spread across the city from construction offices to co-ordinating project offices. I was responsible for administering two separate Sharepoint systems (2007 and 2010) and Exchange 2010 as well as administering the Microsoft Lync server. I created and administered user accounts and security groups using Active directory, ensuring a smooth functioning and responsive support service. I also provided desktop, printer and telephone support to the project staff, construction staff – from 5 different companies – and the council staff. I achieved a high user satisfaction rating during my time with the Tram project and kept the hardware functioning on a minimal budget. I encountered and supported a wide variety of hardware specific to transportation systems that I had never dealt with before this project. It was a great learning experience and I thoroughly enjoyed my time there.

April 2012 – June 2012 – Amor Group (now part of Lockheed Martin):

Desktop Support Engineer in the Extra Resource Pool.

I spent 3 months working in three different companies covering holidays of normal staff members as well as on a specific project. When working for Business Stream I gained experience in working with virtualised desktops and applications in a high stress environment. I was based partially on-site for this position as they had their own 1st line support team.

My next posting was with Scottish Canals primarily at their Falkirk Wheel offices providing cover while their normal staff member attended training course. During this placement I spent a large amount of time providing remote support as the various client sites were spread across Scotland. I learnt a lot here about providing a professional phone “personality” so that users would trust me and be patient while I helped them to resolve their problems.

My last posting was with Lloyds TSB where I helped t perform a server audit across three of their sites ensuring that the inventory they had of each server room was accurate and up to date. This placement provided an interesting chance to see older technology in place and still working correctly. This was a two week project that was successfully completed within our allotted and agreed timescale.

June 2008 – March 2012 – Amor Group (now part of Lockheed Martin):

Desktop Support Engineer - sited at Cairn Energy Plc.

I started my career in IT support with Cairn Energy at their headquarters in Edinburgh city centre. Originally I worked on 1st Line and after two years I was promoted to 2nd

Line. While there I was responsible for all IT purchasing under £10,000 for company, making sure that the equipment purchased was appropriate and sustainable for a 5 year refresh cycle. I worked with Active Directory on the creation of user accounts and security groups – used to manage file share access. I helped with the maintenance of both HP and Xerox printers, ensuring they were in a operative condition as much as possible and that I maintained a ready stock of both toner and spare parts. I also handled a large majority of PC upgrades that needed to be done, either memory, hard drives or graphics cards. Part of the service we provided was a responsive “concierge” service with on-call support which was defined as anything with a plug. The four years I spent in this location involved the steepest learning curve as I had no previous experience in support and the company ensured that they used the latest technologies available. Overall I loved the problem solving involved in this position as often a lot of research was required to resolve the issues reported.

June 2005 - 2008: Lloyds TSB Scotland

Customer Service Officer (part-time while at university)

This was a part-time position to help support myself at University. I was a front-line cashier and was where I learned the basics of customer facing support that I built on in the positions during my career to date. This job was where I found my enjoyment of working 1 to 1 with “users”.
