Health Education Center, Tulane University Health Science
Center,
New Orleans, LA, U.S.
In 2000, the Frost Foundation granted Tulane University National Center
of Excellence in Women‘s Health unrestricted funding to assist in
continuing the work in their Women‘s Health Projects. In January 2003,
the Frost Foundation pledged $5 million to name the Mary Amelia

Mary Amelia Center serves as a comprehensive, community-oriented
health education center by providing health education programs that are
culturally, geographically, and age appropriate. With an ecological
approach to health promotion focuses on sharing, building and

This center provided comprehensive clinical care to women across the
lifespan. This was a multidisciplinary clinic with Nurse Practitioners,
Medical Doctors and Social Workers practicing in the clinic. Family
medicine, general internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology,
rheumatology, hematology, endocrinology, reproductive endocrinology
and infertility as well as psychiatry were represented. 65% of our patients
were African American. We had an active bone health program as well
as several health education programs in the clinic that was closed due to
Hurricane Katrina flooding our clinic with four feet of water.

The primary goal of this program is ―focus on increasing the leadership skills of MCH professionals by
facilitating the timely transfer of new information, research findings and technology related to MCH; and
updating and improving the knowledge and skills of health and related professionals in programs serving mothers
and children‖. We will address these disparities by implementing a multi-faceted training program to enhance

The research plan includes a meta-analysis designed to assess the effects of prior intervention efforts to change social
norms relevant to child maltreatment, a qualitative study to explore issues relevant to informing theory, instrument,
and intervention development regarding corporal punishment use and child maltreatment risk, and a community-
based survey to explore associations and variations between perceived social norms about corporal punishment,
related constructs, and use of corporal punishment.

The fourth cycle of the program is dedicated to promoting Women‘s Health research and the subsequent transfer of
findings. In order to improve the quality and increase the quantity of Women‘s Health research Tulane BIRCWH
bridge the period between advanced training and research independence, as well as link professions, scientific
disciplines, and areas of interest for selected scholars. This ensure, in a thoughtfully mentored setting, the necessary
protected time for both didactic learning and research training such that the program will ultimately produce
exceedingly competent junior faculty members who will achieve research independence.

Building Interdisciplinary Careers in Women‘s Health Training
Program
$2,300,000 NIH
The Tulane BIRCWH bridged the period between advanced training and research independence in a mentored
setting. In this program, 9 of11 BIRCWH Scholars were females, and include one African American and three Asian
Scholars. During our first four years we successfully supported 11 (4 current) very junior faculty members,
comprising 1MD, 5MD MPH/MSc, 1MD PhD, 3PhD, 1PhD MPH. The research undertaken spanned from
translational, to patient-oriented to epidemiological and health services outcomes research. This exemplary group of
junior faculty had since entering the program collectively, published (or in press) 95 peer reviewed papers and
presented 72 abstracts at national and international conferences by 2007, and was on track for developing
independent research careers. The majority of the first cohort is now funded as PI‘s or Co-PI‘s on NIH grants.
