TEACHING (AT CUHK SINCE 1999)

In the CUHK, Edward has been teaching Architectural Design Studios, lecturing on Environmental Design, and supervising Design and Research Theses. Edward’s teaching is rooted in his philosophy teaching architecture in a practical, technologically proven and creative manner. He is particularly keen on investigating the technologic and tactile quality of design. He calls this Technics. This involves sensibility and an appreciation of the quality of materials and spaces; the quantities of the environment, building dynamics, gravity, production and process; and most importantly, the human experiential responses and needs. A motto to his students is: To make a building energy efficient and technologically sound is not that difficult, to compose it beautifully and poetically at the same time requires one’s lifetime pursuit.

In 2003, recognizing the latent needs of Sustainable Design in the profession, Edward single-handedly initiated and launched the MSc in Sustainable and Environment Design Programme. It provides advanced training to professionals of the construction industry. (www.sustain-cuhk.info).

The group was supervised by Prof Edward Ng.

RESEARCH (statement)

The UVA method of building regulations

• High Density City Urban Climatic (light, thermal, ventilation) Studies

• Daylighting Design and Daylight (Sky Model) Studies

• Ecological and Sustainable (Architectural) Designs and Projects

Since arriving at CUHK in 1999, Edward has been successful obtaining both internal and external competitive grants, government technical contracts and organisation donations. [PI and collaborated project with project sum of approximately HK$90 million] One of his research projects was on how daylight could be harnessed and better used in HK. The project involved data collection, site survey, user satisfaction survey and computational studies. The aim was to seek ways that better buildings could be designed for high density living of Hong Kong. The Buildings Department HKSAR has adopted the results as part of its Practice Note for Authorised Persons. In 2005, Edward completed a project with the Planning Department HKSAR to improve the ventilation quality of living in the city. The results have been endorsed by the HK Government and implemented as a Technical Circular. It is now also a credit requirement of HK BEAM+ environmental assessment system. Both the daylight and the urban ventilation projects have been reported in international meetings and got Best Paper Awards. The city ventilation project was the Runner-up of the RIBA Research Awards 2007. As a follow up to the city ventilation project, Edward has been commissioned by the HK Govt to draft the Hong Kong Urban Climatic Map for planning. The project has been completed in 2013 and the findings has been incorporated into the government’s planning framework.

Edward has been working on a number of projects that focus on renewable energy and sustainability. These projects attempt to bring together two key issues that determine our future: education and environmental sustainability. Under the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) International Daylight Monitoring Programme (IDMP), Edward had operated a Research Class station at CUHK. Edward developed the Solar Resources Standard for Hong Kong, as well as the Solar Renewable Energy Potential Map for southeast China. Lately, he has extended his research by using satellite images to predict solar radiation and daylight availability.

In association with Xian Jiaotong University, China, an experimental Eco-school and a bridge near Xian were built. The projects have served as demonstrations to locals and the Chinese Government on how sustainable projects should be designed in the region. They have served as the laboratory for on-site measurements. The projects have led to a number of design awards including winning two RIBA International Awards – 2006 and 2009. Lately, Edward has been designing low cost, anti-seismic housing in Shichuan, China. The project has won the Grand Award of the Green Building Awards of Hong Kong Green Building Council, and an UNSECO (Heritage) Jury Innovation Award 2011.

PUBLICATION

Apart from his contributions to architecture through design, Edward has made contributions to scholarship through publication. His recent publications are in the areas of daylighting design, environmental design, urban climate and sustainability in architecture. He is particularly interested in the issues of the climatic design of high-density cities. His publications on daylight design have been the basis of regulatory changes in Hong Kong; his papers outlined methods to achieve better daylight design for residential buildings in high density cities. Lately, his papers on Air Ventilation Assessment have been the basis of changes to Hong Kong Planning Standards and Guidelines (HKPSG). His recent studies on Urban Climate have been the basis of urban planning policy changes in Hong Kong.

Designing High Density Cities

‘An outstanding collection of papers on a key issue in planning today. Starting with the essentials of high density building, this book then explores the complex relations of high-density metropolitan areas…It goes without saying that the combination of such important themes fills a gap in our knowledge and that no planner can ignore this book’

"We get along better if we collaborate with nature instead of trying to dominate it" – the Buddhist proverb encapsulates the ethos informing this deeply refreshing and timely book. The works herein are as much a dialogue between architect/artist and site as they are constructions: … Nor is this art for art's sake - there are many structures, such as the bridge by Edward Ng and the village of Maosi, making a real difference to everyday lives. …, Natural Architecture provides a quiet yet forceful counterblast, questing for and discovering meanings rather than imposing them.
