Early Placement Update The 2017-2018 Early Placement program for our High School seniors started on January 23, 2018. Is program is for CVCC’s best students, having a B average and nine or fewer absences during their program year one and two. During Early Placement, students work four afternoons a week instead of attending their CVCC program so that they can have real life work experience to increase their job ready skills and possibly lead to full time employment following the completion of their program. As of February 20, 2018, CVCC has 31 students from 12 different programs participating in Early Placement or Paid Internship, two in an Apprenticeship program and one student on a Non-Paid Internship. Students are making a minimum of $8.30 up to $15 per hour at this time. CVCC wishes these students the best of luck as they contribute to our regions work force. Tenth Grade Visitations CVCC held tenth grade visitations for students interested in attending CVCC next school year. On Wednesday, February 14, 2018, 233 students attended CVCC; these students were from Cuyahoga Heights High School, Garfield Heights High School, Independence High School, Nordonia High School, and Revere High School. On Thursday, February 15, 2018, 182 students attended from Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School, North Royalton High School, and Twinsburg High School. The 415 total students that attended the visitations was an increase from last year, CVCC hopes to see all those students next school year! HOSA Regional Competitions Students from Dental Assisting and Health Careers participated in the Northeast Regional Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) competitive events at Pioneer Career Center in Shelby, Ohio on February 10 and 11, 2018. Job Seekers On Saturday, February 10, 2018, 18 community members attended the Job Seekers Seminar on the Ohiomeansjobs.com website. Amy Dumbaugh, project manager for the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services helped participants explore the site in CVCC’s E-Library. Amy’s presentation focused on features and benefits of the site including: career exploration, resume writing and rating, free on line practice tests for Work Keys, ACT, SAT and a variety of different post-secondary education tests along with on line tutorials, financial literacy and budgeting tools, school finder, virtual interviewing and job posting search. Amy also explained the Ohio Means Jobs offices and their role in the career search and training assistance they can provide. There was also good dialogue between participants on frustrations and solutions during the job search process. Job Seeker Seminars are a community service provided by the Career and Community Resources Department at CVCC. Martha Sluka Career and Community Resources Specialist and Karen Schroedel Adult Education Career Specialist and Health Careers Coordinator develop the programs.

Career Tech Education Week Career Tech Education Week was held the week of Monday, February 5 to Friday, February 9, 2018. To celebrate this week, CVCC held its quarterly 100% Club Recognition Ceremony, Bring Your Parent to School Day, College and Military Career Day, and a Red Cross Blood Drive sponsored by the Medical Administrative Specialist and Dental Assisting programs. The Blood Drive collected 25 pints of blood for needed patient care, 45 people donated blood exceeding the goal of 40. Thank you to all those who donated!

100% Club Perfect Attendance 2017-2018 -2nd Quarter A total of 193 students achieved the 100% Club Award for this quarter. Kayla Eber, Teaching Professions Chyna Funchess, Transition-To-Work Bring Your Parent to School Day On Tuesday, February 6, 2018, 242 parents/guardians attended CVCC’s Bring Your Parent to School Day. Thank you to all the parents and guardians who participated in the day’s activities! What a great event for students to show all the interactive and wonderful skills they are learning in their programs! College and Military Career Day On Wednesday, February 7, 2018, CVCC held its College and Military Career Day. The colleges/military branches that were in attendance include: Cuyahoga Community College (East), Kent State University-(Geauga/Twinsburg), Ohio Technical College, Pittsburgh Technical Institute, The Ohio State University-ATI, U.S. Army Recruiting Center, Marines Permanent Contact Station, Ohio Army National Guard, The University of Akron, Universal Technical Institute, Ursuline College, Virginia Marti College, TDDS Technical Institute, and VMCAD College. CVCC thanks all those who participated in College and Military Day at CVCC. What a great way to continue in celebrating Career Tech Education Week! STEM Career Showcase On Saturday, February 3, 2018, CVCC hosted its annual STEM Career Showcase targeted to 7th - 12th graders and their parents. 400 students and parents attended this event and had the opportunity to observe and participate in demonstrations, hands-on activities, and virtual reality experiences sponsored by over 50 leading companies and organizations, and CVCC programs. In addition, guests meet representatives from 25 educational institutions. Students received information on college majors and advice on high school classes to take now. Dr. Debbie Jackson, Director, STEM Education at CSU presented “Why STEM” to 110 students and parents. Dr. Jackson shared why companies seek employees with STEM knowledge and skills. The STEM Career Showcase is developed and coordinated by Darden Blake and Marie Elias, Community Liaisons, in the Career & Community Resources Department. Business Professionals of America Regional Contest On Friday, January 26, 2018, CVCC students competed in the Business Professionals of America (BPA) Regional Contest. The students who qualified will continue and compete in the BPA State Conference in Columbus, Ohio on March 8 and 9, 2018. The following students qualified for the state contest:

Freshmen/Sophomore College and Career Planning Seminar

On Wednesday, January 24, 2018, CVCC hosted a College and Career Planning Seminar for High School Freshmen & Sophomores and their parents. 90 area highs school students and their parents attended this event. Laurel Kaiser, Social Worker and Director of the First Generation Center at Notre Dame College spoke about developing a self-reliant student. LuAnn Coldwell, Career Advisor at Kent State University shared ways teens can explore career options, Brianna Stephens, Admissions Counselor from Baldwin Wallace University explained how to create a solid academic portfolio and Carissa Godbott, Coordinator of Special Student Services at Tri-C, spoke about how students can earn college credit while in high school and CVCC. Peyton Mika, a Nordonia High School junior, ended the program by giving a high school student’s perspective. Peyton is a current CVCC student in the Computer Networking Academy and she is also taking advantage of the College Credit Plus program at the Twinsburg Branch of Kent State University. This College and Career Planning Seminar was developed by CVCC Community Liaisons Darden Blake and Marie Elias.

Mock Interviews at CHHS On Tuesday, January 20, 2018 Mock Interview's were held at Cuyahoga Heights High School. These interviews were coordinated by CVCC's Career Specialist, Amy Hanratty. Students had the opportunity to create a professional resume and portfolio, as well as dress professionally and test out their interviewing skills. What a great day filled with real-world experiences! Student Parent Information Night On Thursday, January 18, 2018, CVCC hosted its Student Parent Information for all students and their parents/guardians to explore the many high school programs offered. What an excellent turnout as almost 1,000 people attended! CVCC thanks all those who came out to see the great opportunities CVCC has to offer! NHS Glass Ceiling Nordonia High School's Glass Ceiling group had the opportunity to meet and speak with Beth Stricker from Damsel in Defense, an organization whose mission is to equip, empower and educate women to protect themselves and their families. Beth shared tips on how to be safe in certain situations and the best way to defend oneself. Beth also talked about being an independent business consultant. Apprenticeship Opportunities for CVCC Students On Thursday, January 18, 2018, Derrick Miller of Pitt Ohio and Jess Looman, Recruitment Specialist for U.S Cargo, Package Delivery presented details on their new apprenticeship program to senior students in Auto Body Repair and Refinishing, Auto Service Technology, Building and Property Maintenance and the Power Equipment Technology program. Apprenticeship employees begin as Dock Workers making $12.00 an hour and move with experience and age to Van Driver ($14.00 hourly), Straight Truck Driver CDLB ($18.45 per hour), to CDLA Driver ($21 per hour), eventually Line Haul Drivers can make six figures with the company. Pitt Ohio pays for all training and instruction for the CDL licenses process. Pitt Ohio Employees do not have overnight routes so typically drivers are home every night. Depending on interest and ability there are also pathways for Auto Mechanics, Body Repair Workers and Fork Lift Operators. They warned students that they could not hire anyone with three moving violations in 3 years so to keep their driving records clean; applicants also need to be able to pass a drug test. Pitt Ohio is trying to alleviate a driver shortage problem caused by the retirement of many 30-year employees in creating this apprenticeship program; they have a 6% annual turnover rate. Pitt Ohio employees have excellent benefits with medical coverage fully paid by the company. Pitt Ohio is a regional employer with 21 terminals in nine states, they currently have a terminal in Cleveland and they are in the process of building a new terminal with 130 bays in Parma. Students can apply for part time Dock Worker positions to get their foot in the door when they are 18 years old. There will be a Phlebotomy Information Night on Monday, March 12, 2018 for anyone interested in the Phlebotomy Fundamentals program starting on April 9, 2018. The next evening STNA program will start June 18, 2018. Some universities, like The Ohio State University now require nursing students to complete a STNA course as a clinical compliance requirement for the BSN program. Ohio Workforce Loan Program John Magill, Assistant Chancellor from the Ohio Department of Higher Department Education and Michael Fracassa, Director of the Ohio Workforce Loan Program were at CVCC on Thursday, February 15, 2018 for a site visit for our Workforce Loan program. CVCC’s Adult Education is the first in the state of Ohio to receive the Workforce Loan for the EMT program and the second in the state to receive it for the HVAC program.

SkillUp Service CVCC Adult Education has partnered with the Cuyahoga County Department of Development to offer the SkillUp Service. SkillUp assists employers with identifying skilled jobs and training pathways to help employees acquire the necessary skills for business’s open positions. Employers in any industry can receive support from Cuyahoga County to help them train existing employees, new employees, or workers provided by temporary staffing agencies - upskilling workers from lower-wage and lower-skill jobs to higher-wage, higher-skill jobs. SkillUp will also help employers access new and diverse sources of talent, including traditionally underrepresented populations and residents who are enrolled in training and workforce programs. Adult Education is thrilled to be able to collaborate with the County and assist in continuing to benefit the success of students. Upcoming Events
