Gramma of social spaceDesigners should give iner space of architeture the

character of social space conciously and actively.Although it is important to create a site to attract people stay in formal or informal chair ,it is not enough. An architecture could function only when people can meet each other in design perspective. In the process of a design, you could interfere the relationship of sight actively, then change the possibility of meeting and avoidance. Connect main sight, site and conjunction with stair platform, bridge, light and dark zone, transparent object and screen for occlusion--these are basic methods, while eternal.Just like the concept promenade architecturale, the process of feeling a space when going thruogh it is the ame as what Le Corbusier said. The way of organizing a space can increase the chance of seeking some else, while they don’t know it.

This area is for thoes who just pass by or stay here for a minute. The pillar is 1.1M which is just right for you to lean on.

This area is for res idents nearby who come here to have a rest. The wall and the tree create a traditional streetatmosphere.

This area is a meeting place.Open space is surrounded by 4 pavilions, in each of them there is a well. In old city of China, wells are always the gathering point of residents.

This slope is a short cut for those who come from the bridge beside.

This area is called tree-box,for thoes who seek a peacful moment in public space.Space feelings varies in different relationship between walls and trees.

Wells in traditional Chinese city lifeIn most European ancient cities, streets and square are public space for residents. While in chinese old

citties, squares have never existed. So,wells become the gathering point for people naturaly for its practical function. In this park,4 pavillions with a well for each one of them create a space which will remind users a lifestle in the past. And the decoration in water shape provide some fun.

ProblemsWith a long history, this shoppong center is very

important to loacals. Main problems are: 1 The traditional street --Nanhao Street is out of control, with kinds of stores in a state of chaos. 2 More and more parts are becoming shopping mall, traditional atmosphere is disappearing.3 Three parts in the site are isolated to each other.4 Transportation is complicated, cars, peditrains, riders, buses, share the same road.5 Being one of three comercial center of suzhou,FAR of the block is too low.

SolutionsBased on the history of the site and development

of the other two commercial center in Suzhou, we figoure out 2 units to form tradditional owntown life atmosphere.1 Redefine the block and rearrange functions2 Unit 1 is designed for Nanhao Street for stores.3 Unit 2 is designed for north part for offices.4 Pedestrians and vehicles are seperated in different system. 5 Increas the development intensity

Downtown Life in Suzhou

In chinese, shijing means downtown. It is not only part of city space and time, but cultural landscape.

Before Song Dynasty, downtown in China was organized by the unit“Fang”, which is very enclosed because of strict control of government. Each Fang was enclosed by walls with doors and only open in limited hours. All the stores and housese are mixed inside. In Song Dynasty,City Revolution broke the rules,so for the first time in history, chinese common people had their own city life.As a method of management ,Fang disappeared ever, while the physical way of organizing a city with Fang was kept .

In a society of triplepart structure ---government,downtown and freeland, people in downtown live a casual and happy life which only belongs to the common people. Serious duties have nothing to do with them, they support families, chatting with neighours, enjoy a free and easy life.

First of all, Chuihong Garden will be built. The importance of Chuihong tower for locals will be fully taken advantage of to attract consumers, then bring power to the whole site.

Secondly, renew of traditional historic blocks and the settlement of villigers should be finished to improve living environment. In this phase plenty resourses and money from government will be needed.

Then, offices and mixing residential area will attract new employees and residents .

Last, living and comercial environment will have been improved, high-level real estate project can be developped, such as townhouse,to reach the balance of revenue and expenditure then obtain profit.

In historic residential area only old people are left because of bad quality of buildingsand infrastructure. Newly opened large scale office buildings have no relations with other parts inside the district. A village inside city full of villagers and migrants made the project more complicated. In the process of fast urbanization, the block is separated from surroundings for its non-city way of life.

Redevlopment of old district in Suzhou

Generally for the business structure of community commerce, proportion of retail, catering and others is 40%, 30%, 30%. But it varies for kinds of factors, such as distance from shopping center, space of community, transportation, purchasing power of residents. In this renew project, catering industry is mainly developed in Chuihong Garden, and cultural industry in office district, retails in housing district.

Many Euro cities have humanity density of roads which provide convinience for citizens.Key of reconstruction of tranportation system is to add new minor road then realize minor-cycle in site.

Users

Physical quality: Renew of the old street will not succeed without participation of original residents. So it should be reached step by step.

Function: With the chage of city and users of old buildings, variety of function will emerge.

Users: Most of young generation of old street will move out,and new users of old buildings will come to continue their lives.

OASIS

Thermal unit---The assemly of the field, container and tunnel, as shown in the model. The idea behind

the thermal unit concept lies in creating high and low pressure areas in order to force the wind to funnel from the east to west. This mean that there is a pattern of thermal interaction between large and small courtyards through connector tunnels, allowing for air movement. These passive energy flows opimize thermal comfort in exterior spaces and reduce operating costs in inerior air conditioned spaces.

Oasis Micro-climate affected landscape design

Page 21: CV&Portfolio Huina Wang

21

The tunnel space will be partly covered by a 0.5h green area which could be cool air reservior in heat waves when the wind comes from east. And at the same time, it could make the short way to city center more attractive and make the vision experience in station square better.

The tunnel and the buildings around it were built right after the war, when people really want some thing modern in city, which mieans big at that time. But the public space formed is not human scale so this green area could be caled OASIS in the concrete and non-human scale environment.

Part of the Yangtze River Delta, Taihu is one of the biggest five sweet water lakes in China. It has a total area of 36895 km2, and Taihu lake is 2338 km2. (see Fig.1 & 2). The basin is full of lakes, streams and swamps, a fascinating landscape with water as dominant element.

It has attract national attraction for several times in recent years for water problems. In 1999, the 200/y flood attacked Taihu. In 2007, the blue algae bloom in Taihu caused lack of drinking water of more than 100 thousand people. In the drought of 2011, in some part of the lake the bottom could be seen. In general, it has 3 main water problems.

Flood/drought Over reclamation and changing farming way are the main causes. Less retention area and climate change also

cause drought.

Pollution Over fertilization and the disappearance of riparian zone are the main reasons.

Deterioration of ecological environment and cultural landscape Over reclamation and pollution erased the natural space, and species communities are changing. Cultural

landscape built upon is threatened.

Pulse: the natural fluctuation of water body.

Pulse Landscape plan in Taihu basin

Page 29: CV&Portfolio Huina Wang

29

In history this is a plain full of lakes and swamps. Later there were 3 kinds of reclamation. The strategy is to return those retention area, allowing flood pulse of water system. After the calculation, the fluctuation is shown on the right.

1 Big scale reclamation of lakes, outside the dyke.

2 Changing the floodplain along canal into agricultural use. This

happened inside dyke and in high-lying area without dyke.

3 Changing reservoirs in high-lying land into fishponds.

Page 30: CV&Portfolio Huina Wang

30

Agriculture as nature

The fishpond and rice paddy could be altered to be with more natural characteristics and ecological values. Their role turn from pollution source to positive landscape shaper. Thus those land is semi-natural and semi-productive.

Story of Great Leap Forward in China This is project is done when i worked in a provincial level urban plannning institute. It is a center includes library, theater, sport facilities and park etc, serving students in surrounding universities.

It a typical drawing-in-a white- paper project, representing the Great Leap Forward movement in city construction in china.

In workshop in Paris, i made a small research project about this topic, using this area as case(see next page).

Story of Great Leap Forword Urban design and its criticism

Page 35: CV&Portfolio Huina Wang

35

Great Leap Forward in china last 2 and half years from

1958 to 1960.But actually it never stopped and is still alive.

BIG city new district construction competition

waste and hurt the land, causing and triggering severe disaster.

To healing the Land, use landscape as infrastructure.

-connect with old city by waterfront space design.

-new area as a new strategic point to start a new landscape

layer

-intensify the center and save the land

Problems

Jinghu railway line goes through Kunshan, its construction finished in a very short time. With this background, the negative impact of railway to urban fabric, function and image has never been considered. The problems in the project include: urban fabric is cut, function is affected, urban life stopped on both sides of the railway. Besides the noise and radioactive pollution are also problems. Under the impact of all those factors, urban space along railway is now facing big challenge. Without interference, those places could become abandoned and attract homeless people or criminals, making the situation worse.

Area of the project included the 200 meter public space on both sides of the railway, and some nodes which is wider than that. The area is with rich landscape elements, Yangchenghu area, 3 railway stations and a lot of villages and water bodies are all in clueded.

Design

LOS integrated all relative planning and solved problems by a cross scale design. We propose using existing green areas along the railway to create a long park. The main thing is to combine the park the surrounding resource(train station, Yangchenghu, crab island and canals etc) and introduce attractive activity. Considering the lack of sport facility in the city now, we propose to use sport as the theme of the park and arrange all types of sports field, including water sport, extreme sport and local community sport etc, building a active urban atmosphere.

On the basis of this structure, we made convincing designs on nodes, for example renew of crab island, Liangzhu culture plaza in kunshan south station, and using screen approach to control view from train.

42

The area is at the edge of Yangzte delta, in other words it is with great tourism market potential. But the

area has a lack of attractive tourism spot and general development framework.

For this project first 27 relevant aspects of planning were identified. All these aspects can potentially

interfere, creating 364 potential planning relations. Of these we think approximately 50% are valid relations that require some answers in this planning project.

The region has, apart from the coastal line, no logical existing focal point for development of an attractive

landscape that could be the basis for high quality development. Therefore the region has to create a fully new infrastructure for tourism and high quality urban and economic development. This should be as big as possible(visible) and should use the main potential of the region.

In reg ion leve l , we ana lyzed a bigger area outside the site, and

we propose to use the attraction of Nantong harbor and Lvsi harbor at two ends of Tonglv canal, to make a regional structure and develop Tonglv canal as a landscape belt. We call it from Dawn to Dusk. And Tongzhou will become the center of the structure.

Creating New Landscape Nantong Tongzhou south east area development plan

Page 43: CV&Portfolio Huina Wang

43

For site itself we made a integrated structure from several aspects.

Page 44: CV&Portfolio Huina Wang

44

We think the spatial structureof rural area is with great landscape potential, and take modern agriculture development into consideration, we reorganized the village and farmland and created a framework, which make

the area suitable for future development and at the same time keep its local character.

Creating New Landscape Nantong Tongzhou south east area development plan

Page 45: CV&Portfolio Huina Wang

45

Nantong has the water quantity and quality problems. We

designed a system with 7 separated water units, in which precipitation could be stored and cleaned to meet future needs.

Page 46: CV&Portfolio Huina Wang

46

Now in Tongzhou ,there are more than 2000 fabric producer, but we propose to increase the design value of this industry, like the blue print. We propose using Yuxi old town to

attract designers and artists to open their workshop here, then we can have exhibition and shops of fabric design.

As fo r t h e l a c k o f re c o g n i za b l e landscape elements, we propose to
