editor’s letterLike many of us, I herald the end of Winter and the entrance of Spring. Don’t get me wrong, snow can be beautiful. Who doesn’t love the magic of a pristine white landscape as you watch from the window holding a freshly made cup of hot chocolate? We know, too, that old man Winter must come to an end, and it is with color in my mind and spring in my step that I introduce you to our latest Spring issue.

Inside, you’ll find several rich sources of color and inspiration – for both fashion and beauty. Our beauty pages show you how vivid, how rich and pigmented beauty products have become – and how you can use them to your advantage without looking overly made up.

If you’re looking for fashion tips, then head in the direction of novelty prints, cobalt and turquoise blues and fuchsias. We’ve brought you a strong collection for your shopping pleasure: the key to wearing bright colors is to pair them with paler shades like slate grays and beiges for the perfect combination.

Our cover girl is the sultry Penelope Cruz, currently starring in the movie Nine: she is every bit a cat on a hot tin roof but also has that real grace and class that comes from being a well seasoned actress. We can’t get enough of her!

You’ll also find tips from American’s favorite financial guru, Suze Orman, who tells you how to financially succeed in 2010. With Suze’s tips and gudes, you can finally wrangle in that spending and start saving for your future.

Pilates has been around as a form of excise a long time and we delve into some of the core exercises that make it such a great way to train your mindas well as your muscles.

So as the days start to warm, make time to get out into the fresh spring air and enjoy a walk or workout!

SPRING FEVER

Spring brings back some new trends you may have loved in the past: the cutti ng edge and retro palett e emphasizes blues, purples and dark colors including tones of navy and black. The “IT” color of the season is a rich cobalt blue. We dare you to wear accessories, skirts and scarves that fl irt with this shade!

Your makeup can be smoky and the nail color du jour is a dark, almost slate-grey shade. Wear purple eyeshadow and paint your lips a bright red and you’ll be a knockout!

The ideal way to build your wardrobe

would be to invest in some key pieces

over which you can layer your acces-

sories, including scarves, baubles,

beads and jewelry. Here are some

pieces that you can use to build your

Spring Fever wardrobe:

• A blue skirt, preferably with some ruffles

• A black and white patterned dress

• A few colorful, billowy blouses

• Some solid cardigans as layering pieces

Once you have built your core

wardrobe, then you can focus on

items to layer over your key pieces,

from necklaces to bracelets to

spiky platforms (or Mary Janes, if

you don’t like heels). Color can-

not be used in every outfit – use

it sparingly in outfits that are very

busy, and use a large dose of it

when you’re feeling particularly

effervescent or just want to paint

the town purple.

A solid blue ruffled skirt can be beautifully paired with a colorful printed top and sleek leather boots. Here, our model pulls of a busy outfit but the trick to this ensemble is letting the blouse take its colorful cue notes from the skirt.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with novelty

Blue is the NewBlackTrend Alert It’s offi cial: the various shades and palettes of blue are the new black for Spring 2010. The red carpet can get frilled and dressed up in these navy shades in style, thanks to the several celebrities and luminaries to walk the red carpet over the past few months in various styles.

In particular, Majolica blue is one of the top colors of the season. While it may strike you as somewhat a somber color for spring, it is a starting point from which you can add your own theme and variations on the same shade.

There is no right or wrong shade of blue: fi nd one that is appropriate for your skin tone and hair color and then determine if you want it matte, solid, sequined, frilled or pleated. If the dress is too busy, don’t wear a belt or use too much jewelry. With blue, celebrities use silver or gold shoes and jewelry to match.

The texture of the material is very important as well. Sabrina Washington’s dress uses two swatch textures. To add depth to an outfi t, consider pairing a satin blouse with a matte skirt, for example or even wearing a single colored outfi t does not have to be boring at all.

The Pantone Color Institute has selected turquoise as the offi cial color of 2010, in part because of its freshness and the optimism it brings. Forget about feeling blue: this year’s shade is defi nitely more upbeat than that!

Color in Bloom: Your Colorful Desires Come to Fruiti on

The Spring Beauty trend report is in and we are seeing ia wash of color from fl ower power tones. This season is all about heavily pigmented eye shadows, emollient and luscious lips, richer than Technicolor and tulip shades!

As for the beauty trends, here they are: make the eff ort to be plucky, mix in some classic smoky eye looks with more avant-garde heavily pigmented shades. Accentuate your lashes: since the advent of Lati sse and L’Oreal’s Telescopic Mascara, the obsession with Barbie-style and mile long lashes is more vogue than Lady Gaga.

1. Play up your eyes and rummage for the red lipsti ck. Don’t be fearful and ti mid when it comes to color; plunge your paintbrush into those gel eyeliners, fuschia and teal eye shadows and line your lips with Gwen Stefani’s favorite shade – red!

2. Lashes, lashes, lashes. This may well sound like a number from Abba but we mean serious business. A girl running around without proper mascara ammuniti on is like a fashion show without models. Don’t let your lashes get naked this season! Curl them, prime them, coat them with soot-black lashes and go!

3. Flawless skin has always been in, so we’re not going to oversell you on that one (you already know this, I’m sure). But now there are so many anti -aging moisturizers and foundati ons on your drugstore shelves, so why not erase two pesky problems in one: uneven skin tone and wrinkles?

4. A lipsti ck would not be lipsti ck without any gloss. Once you’ve sealed the deal on your favorite lip color, make sure your lips glisten with that oh-so-important bit of emollience: gloss!

The colors you want to be wearing this season? Pinks, fuschias, teals blended with just the right amount of shimmer to give a complete Botti celli Venus eff ect.

to applying this makeup is layering.

Start with the palest of shimmery layers,

then we used CoverGirl’s Smoky Shadow Blast® to wash the lids as

well as inner corner of the eyes; next we used CoverGirl’s Smoky

Shadow Blast in Tempest® Blue, on to Maybelline Eye Studio eye

shadow in Navy® for the upper part of the lids and the brow bone

and Maybelline Eye Studio’s shadow in Mad for Mauve. Finally,

Marksie’s eyes were layered in Maybelline Lash Stiletto Very Black

To get Danielle’s flawless face and rosy cheeks,

we used Maybelline Instant Age

Rewind Treatment Makeup®,

and Maybelline Eye Studio

blush in Pink Persuasion®.

In this look, the salient points to

note are the eyes and cheeks. The eye

shadow in this picture is unconventionally

applied – look at how beautifully the yellow

dresses the outer corners – and then some- of

this model’s eyes. This technique is easily done by

taking a cotton ball and dipping it into the eye shadow and lightly touching

the sides of your eyes with it. The result? A magical contrast of color!

The blush accents the cheeks, of course; choose a shade that is a tone or

two more intense than your natural skin color. For darker skin types, we

recommend more coral and peachy tones than pink. Finally, don’t forget

to layer your eye lashes with Maybelline XXL Pro Mascara and make sure

your lips shimmer with a touch of lip gloss.

Remember, don’t be timid this season and experiment with a lot of color

for the eyes to get that completely mesmerizing look. Jump into a blast

of color this Spring with passion!

Silk Screen a Tee Shirt in Mere Minutes! Our crafts expert, Jann Johnson, shows you how much fun it is!Why Silk Screen?Silk Screening is not only fun, it’s easy. If you’ve wanted to spice up something plain and dowdy, it’s easy to silk screen a design in minutes, and nothing is more popular now than retro-styled tee shirts with personal or universal messages.

Many people think silk screening is an arduous task; originally, the process involved colored matter (typically paint) to be forced onto the material and printed through meshes of silk or organdy screen. The silk or screen would have printing and impervious, non-print areas for the paint to bleed through. Nowadays (and we show you how!) the process can be a snap, thanks to pre-printed stencils and screens.

Now, see how easy it can be…

MethodSTEP 11.) Select your Tee. 2.) Fold the tee shirt in half vertically and mark the center line with a pin at the neck and at the midpoint.

Our Peace Sign screen stencil comes with a transparent paper backing; peel the paper off (make sure you back the cleaned stencil with the paper backing again when finished). Position the screen stencil, sticky side down, where you want the design to appear on the tee shirt.

3.) Press the stencil firmly on the shirt. Remove pins if you are using them. Tape off the edges of the stencil with painter’s or masking tape. Now the screen stencil should be completely secure.

STEP 2 4.) Here are your paints. 5.)Apply a generous amount of Simply Screen Fire Truck paint at the left-hand side of the design, doing the top third. Apply a bead of Blue Hawaii for next third of the design. A bead of Envy will finish the last third of design.

6.) Holding the squeegee applicator at a 45 degree angle, using even pressure, pull a thin coat of paint evenly across screen stencil design in a single motion across (left to right). It’s okay if some of the color doesn’t seep through all the parts of the design; try to get the color on most of the design. Sometimes the retro look is more authentic when it doesn’t look machine perfect.

Wipe off the squeegee with paper towel. Continue until the design is completely covered in a thin coat of paint (Take care not to carry paint beyond tape because you’ll end up with a complete ly different and avant-garde kind of design!)

STEP 37.) Immediately peel off tape and 8.)stencil to reveal your new Peace Sign screen printed design! It’s important to wash the screen immediately so you can use it again – reuse up to 20 times.

STEP 4Let the tee shirt air-dry 24 hours to cure the water-based paints. Also, to seal the paints, 9.) heat-set the design with a household iron using a cotton setting (avoid the steam setting) over a press cloth or parchment paper.

A decade ago, the most effi cient way to save energy was a basic assumpti on: turning off the lights when leaving a room. Luckily today, there are many innovati ve products that can help us with simple tasks like this one and they give us no excuse to not save energy – all while keeping our homes beauti fully lit and our money savings high. All too many experts are quick to point out that there is a huge number of energy saving products you can buy at the stores to help you with the fi rst step in protecti ng the planet: starti ng at home.

For those of us who cannot think about simple items like switching off lights before you leave a room, experts have created a moti on-detecti ng light switch that uses passive infrared technology to keep tabs on, whether or not there are people in a room. As long as the sensor detects body movement and knows that the room is occupied, the lights stay on. But when moti on is no longer sensed, the switch jumps into acti on and does the responsible (and energy-effi cient) task of turning the lights off .

The Magic of LEDs

If your home has a track lighti ng system, switch out those hot-running halogens for one of the most energy-effi cient light

bulbs on the market: light emitti ng diodes, or LEDs. Not only is the average LED lifespan up to 30 ti mes greater than that of a halogen bulb, but LEDs also use up to 80% less energy, and produce a virtually impercepti ble level of heat. Because they run cool and don’t increase ambient temperature in the rooms they’re used in, LEDs are much safer to handle, and can actually reduce your cooling costs. 30 LED GU-10 track light bulbs cast intense, warm white beams of light, and otherwise look just like a traditi onal track lighti ng bulb – only you will know how much energy and money you’re saving. Lighti ng accounts for about 20% of the electric bill in the average U.S. home. The easiest way to start saving energy on lighti ng is to change out the light bulbs in your current fi xtures.

Using EnergyStar Lighti ng

Rozzane Weissman, a senior director at the Alliance to Save Energy, says “Another great way to save the most energy and money and protect the environment is to replace your highest use bulbs and fi xtures with ENERGY STAR qualifi ed lighti ng and lighti ng fi xtures. An ENERGY STAR qualifi ed compact fl uorescent light bulb (CFL) will save about $30 over its lifeti me and pay for itself in about 6 months. It uses 75 percent less energy and lasts about 10 ti mes longer than an incandescent bulb.” And for your comfort, CFLs are available in many shapes sizes to replace incandescent light bulbs in your existi ng light fi xtures -- spirals, refl ectors, globes, and other specialty bulbs.

Eco-effi cient Lighti ng: Energy Saving Starts at HomeBy Sabina Covo

There is a vast menu of innovati ve energy-saving products in the market that will help you save money, energy, and of course, Mother Earth.

“...there is a huge number of energy saving products you can buy at stores to help you begin the first step in protecting the

planet: start at home.”

It’s All About Our Planet

When we speak about energy saving, it is all about our planet, and the company Earthmate has created three wonderful residential friendly products which are considered the most environmental responsible in their line. These products help conserve natural resources used in energy generation - such as coal, oil, and natural gas - while reducing green house gas emissions. Their energy saving, eco-sensitive CFL light bulbs are designed to reduce electricity consumption, prevent greenhouse gases, and fight global warming - all while providing long-lasting, economical, and reliable lighting for your home.

Jim Ouellette, Vice President of Consumer Markets for Earthmate describes, “Changing bulbs in your house is the right thing to do on many levels. First, it’s an easy way to reduce your energy use and save money on electricity. A single CFL can save $50-$100 over its lifetime so imagine if you replaced your entire house! On a more macro level, CFLs help conserve natural resources like coal and oil that are used to generate power. And by reducing their consumption, less CO2 and other so called greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere, which scientists have proven to be the leading cause of global warming. Finally, if there are children in the house, switching to CFLs and implementing other conservation measures, like recycling, changing faucet aerators, etc. sets a very positive example and establishes awareness of the need to protect our environment.”

If you are looking for a product that will fit in most fixtures, the mini-size bulbs that are smaller than standard CFLs should be your choice. This product also contains 75% less mercury than standard CFLs, making them even safer for the environment. Super Mini-Size light bulbs are available in 15, 20, and 23-watt models to replace 60, 75, and 100-watt incandescent light bulbs, respectively.

Earthmate also recommends the Dimmable Reflector CFLs which are designed for recessed cans and down lighting applications. They maximize usable light by reflecting light downward instead of losing light inside the can. Earthmate Dimmable Reflector bulbs can dim to 5% of their light output with standard dimming circuits, so no additional equipment is needed. For those of you who are hooked to your beautiful three-way table lamps and fixtures, there are three-way CFL light bulbs which are fixtures to provide three different light settings: low medium and high. Its soft white light is perfect for creating a warm glow while cutting back on energy usage.

Also, don’t forget about surge protectors and strips. Products like the USB EcoStrip 2.0 (www.ecostrip.com) can help you save energy in an environmentally-friendly fashion by eliminating a phantom load from outlets and can save you up to $150 a year. It looks like an ordinary power strip, but it actually turns off when the computer is not in use. The U.S. Department of Energy has said, “In the average home, 75% of the electricity used to power home electronics is consumed when the products are turned off. This can be avoided by unplugging the appliance or using a power strip and using the switch on the power strip to cut all power to the appliance.” Well, with this device, you don’t have to switch anything off anymore – it automatically does it for you.

According to the Alliance to Save Energy, the 2009 total average U.S. household expenditures on energy was around $4,600 and this year it should decrease dramatically if we all take energy saving measures in our homes. So, remember to put your home on an energy saving “diet for 2010.” And for those of you that have not done your taxes, Uncle Sam is offering another incentive: a 30 percent tax credit—a dollar-for-dollar reduction in your income taxes owed—of up to $1,500 throughout 2010 for specific energy efficiency home improvements.

Save energy, save money, take tax credits and help Mother Earth: just how much better can it get?

Do you ever walk into someone’s house and wonder how they have ti me to keep it so perfect? And then they tell you they don’t even have a cleaning lady? Opening the door to someone’s home is like entering an alternate universe. First impressions really do matt er, and some people will make conclusions about you and your family based on how your home appears. Consider the entrance room to be the gateway to your castle. reheati ng late-night left overs in the microwave. This means the way you clean your kitchen is extremely

important, because the residues and left over chemicals from your cleaning

products can oft en fi nd their way into your food.

If you spend signifi cant ti me cooking up treats in the kitchen, chopping veggies on cutti ng boards that are washed

with heavy duty cleaning chemicals can mean their residue ends up on your food. Consider making your own cleaning products with lemon, vinegar, and baking soda. Baking soda is one of the most useful cleaning tools because of its abrasive quality and cheap price tag. Use it on its own as an abrasive in kitchen sinks, or leave an open box in the refrigerator to mask odors.

A quick squeeze on a chopping board is perfect for disinfecti ng. Also, vinegar’s highly acidic power is great for get-ti ng rid of excess food in kitchen drains, especially if you aren’t lucky enough to have a disposal. When these three cleaning tools are combined, they pack a supreme cleaning power with-out the harsh chemicals. Consider fl ushing out your kitchen sink once a week by pouring boiling water from a tea kett le down the sink that’s sprinkled with baking soda and vinegar. Also try this for clearing out bathrooms drains; it helps to remove the funky smells and left over foods that gather inside the sink.

With food, family, and pets all traipsing around the kitchen on a daily basis, the amount of dust that gathers on your fl oor could probably form a life-size dust bunny. But to minimize the amount of ti me you have to spend cleaning, nix the wick-er broom and consider a small vacuum. Bissell™ makes light and portable vacuums for low prices, and they can transfer from ti le fl oors to hard wood in a snap. Aft er vacuuming up the dust, disinfect with a strong cleaning agent. While you can absolutely sti ck to non-toxic products for cleaning the kitchen fl oor, someti mes life demands something a litt le stronger.

The Swiff er Wet Jet® is an easy to use spray mop that fea-tures peel-off pads that are thrown away aft er using.

A cleaning soluti on is sprayed onto the fl oor, making the need for a heavy mop and bucket of water unnecessary. However, the Wet Jet does create waste with its peel-off pads, so hard-core environmentalists should probably look elsewhere. A sponge mop repeatedly dipped in a bucket of fl oor cleaner, such as Pine-Sol® or Mr. Clean®, is an easy way of mopping the fl oors without creati ng garbage.

Windows, Doors and Floors, Oh My!

The fi replace is known as the window to the soul. Unfortu-nately, this “window” is oft en in need of a professional chimney sweep to clean out the months of dirt and ash that pile up. When it comes to cleaning your fi replace and chimney, your best bet is to leave the job in the hands of a true professional. Here’s a great rule of thumb: Only clean your fi replace as far as you can reach your arm inside it, for the rest, hire a pro that does this for a living. Batt er safe than sorry.

There are few cleaning tasks more dreaded than cleaning the bathroom. But it doesn’t have to be enti rely torturous. An abrasive cleaning agent like Comet® is the perfect universal cleaning product that costs less than a dollar. Sprinkle Comet onto your bathroom sink and scrub ti ll the cows come home. This is especially useful for removing food-colored stains from porcelain sinks. Comet can also combat toilet grime when sprinkled inside and scrubbed with a large brush. Thought many people prefer to sti ck with liquid toilet bowl cleaners, you can always save a few bucks by using a universal cleaner like Comet. A spray cleaner, like Lysol®, is the best bet for the toilet seat and its cover, because a powdered cleaning product can make a bit of a mess on the toilet’s side.

The bathtub is our safe haven. We spend weeknights lounging in hot baths aft er a hard day of work, and long snowy weekends reading books with a glass of wine in the tub. When it comes to keeping our tub clean, we can be prett y parti cular. Since left over chemicals from your cleaning products can remain aft er cleaning, frequent bathers should be extra careful as to what they clean with. By using non-toxic cleaners to scrub your bathtub, you can minimize the chance of irritat-ing sensiti ve skin. Method™ brand cleaning products are a popular and budget-friendly line. use in the bathtub. Just pour the three ingredients into a plasti c bott le and shake it up. While it may take a litt le more elbow grease to get rid of serious grout, the results will be worthwhile, and safe for your sensiti ve skin. If you have left over halves of lemon hanging around, rub a half on grimy faucet handles. The acid in the lemon can break apart the grime, while providing a lemon-fresh scent.

The Bedroom: a Pristi ne Heaven

Consider how much ti me you spend in your bedroom. We spend a third of our lives asleep under covers, and our waking hours dreaming of returning to it. That’s why it’s so impor-tant to keep it presentable: Returning to our bedroom each evening should be accompanied by a sense of relief, not of stress and disarray. Oprah Winfrey likes her bed sheets to be laundered every other day. Did you just burst out laughing? Because we sure did! Very few people actually have the ti me to change their sheets every week, let alone on a daily basis. Shoot for a weekly laundry schedule. For heavier blankets and comforters, be sure to read the labels to make sure they can be put in the washing machine. If they require a large, industrial-strength washer, fi nd a local Laundromat with extra-large machines. If you’re willing to pay the price, specialty dry cleaners will fl uff up your blankets so fabulously that you think you’re sleeping in the Waldorf Astoria. Just be ready for a heft y receipt when you pick up your sheets!

One of the secret hideaways of dust in the bedroom is within the folds of your curtains or veneti an blinds. Use a damp rag to wipe away dust on blinds, but be careful what kind of cleaning product you use. Very strong products can leave spray marks on the plasti c, leaving them looking splotchy. For fabric curtains, fi nd a small att achment on your vacuum cleaner that allows you to brush up and down without sucking the fabric into the tube. Getti ng curtains up is defi nitely hassle, and you don’t want to relive that experience because your vacuum has extreme sucking power.

Some people were born to clean. They consider it not only cleansing the home, but also the soul. But what if you’re not a member of that club? Are you desti ned to sit around in a pile of your own fi lth? No way! Just take the task at hand one room at a ti me, and remember how great you’ll feel when it’s fi nally completed. No matt er what anyone says, having a clean home really does help keep a clean mind.

PILATES

Pilates is a relati vely new concept. It was developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates in Germany, who originally called the sport contrology because he believed the system could teach the mind to control the muscles.Today, Pilates is taught in virtually every major gym and is practi ced by millions of Americans everywhere. The main aim of the Pilates is to keep the body balanced and improve spinal support. The exercises emphasize the need for deep inhalati on and exhalati on and also aim to strengthen deep core muscles.

The great aspect about Pilates is you can do it virtually anywhere: inside your home, outdoors, on a mountaintop, or in your ski cabin. Many instructi onal DVDs and videos have been made on the topic; portability of this exercise method is infi nitely greater than say, squash or biking.

Make sure you have a yoga mat. Sit down with your arms outstretched, palms facing upwards. Balance a small weight or a ball on each palm. Fold your legs so that the knees are pointed upward and your feet are firmly on the floor. Then

lift the feet above the ground and inhale and exhale deeply, making sure your core is nice and taut.

Then, turn your bent knees to your right and hold still for a few seconds (feet should still be off the ground). Return the feet back to the original position and twist the body on the other side. The aim of this exercise is to strengthen the core while stretching the hands and gluteal muscles.

Lift your feet so that it is at a 45 degree angle to the floor. Concurrently, bring your head towards your chest slightly and lift your back a little so that you feel a stretch. 1.) Another exercise that is great to stretch your back is to lie down chest side on the mat and lift your head up slightly so you can breathe. Stretch your arms in front of you palms facing together. Now lift the legs high up into the air while thrusting your arms forward. The soles need to face up the ceiling. This is difficult exercise to do (it’s probably easier to do untie yourself from a Houdini knot) but the key here is the thrusting motion of the hands in front so that the back legs move up.

2.) Lie flat on your back, and keep your arm stretched out at your side. Place both your feet on the balance ball with the

butt slightly elevated and your palms pressing downward on the mat. Now lift your right leg so it’s at a ninety degree angle to your body. Alternate with other leg. This exercise is perfect for giving your back a thorough stretch.

3.) Lie face down on the mat, and make sure your feet are stretched taught, with both legs about four apples or fists apart. Press your palms down on the mat and slowly bring your chest upwards with your legs still remaining on the mat. You should feel a through stretch on your lower back. Preventing Cancer May be a Vitamin Supplement Away Vitamin D intake may prevent the risk of certain cancersby Michelle Goodman

Recent studies have shown that a daily dose of vitamin D can reduce cancer risk by 25 percent. Research over the past 30 years linked low vitamin D blood concentrations to both skeletal and non-skeletal conditions, including several types of cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and more. Some researchers believe that it is the most important vitamin in terms of preventing diseases and even treating some existing conditions.

Recent medical research indicates human daily requirements for vitamin D may be up to 10 times more than what is currently recommended. Proper vitamin D supplementation gives one a much better chance of preventing many major illnesses such as, but not limited to: Heart Disease, Hypertension, Arthritis, Chronic Pain, Depression, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Obesity, Premenstrual Syndrome, Muscular Weakness, Fibromyalgia, Crohns Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Autoimmune Illness, and Cancer.

Vitamin D and Cancer Prevention

Several observational studies and a few prospectively randomized controlled trials have demonstrated that adequate levels of vitamin D can decrease the risk and improve survival rates for several types of cancers including breast, rectum, ovary, prostate, stomach, bladder, esophagus, kidney, lung, pancreas, uterus, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. Individuals with

serum or blood levels of vitamin D concentrations less than 20 ng/mL are considered most at risk, whereas those who achieve levels of 32 to 100 ng/mL are considered to have sufficient serum vitamin D concentrations.

It is estimated that 40 to 70 percent of Americans may be vitamin D deficient just because they live in northern regions of the country and/or do not spend enough time outdoors in the sunshine. Vitamin D is known as the ―sunshine vitamin‖ because the body manufactures the vitamin after being exposed to the sun. Ten to fifteen minutes of sun exposure three times a week is enough to produce the body’s vitamin D requirement. But many people living in sunny climates still may not produce enough vitamin D and need more from their diet or supplements.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is essential for maintaining normal calcium and phosphorous levels in our bodies. Maintaining calcium levels in your body are vital for formation, growth and repair of bones and normal calcium absorption and immune function. In other words one cannot work without the other.

Purchase the 1,000 IU/day vitamin D3 cholecalciferol pills that are available over-the-counter or a 5,000 IU capsule. (** see below) Take an average of 5,000 IU a day, year-round, if you have some sun exposure. If you have little, or no, sun exposure you

will need to take at least 5,000 IU per day. How much more depends on your latitude of residence, skin pigmentation, and body weight. Generally speaking, the further you live away from the equator, the darker your skin, and/or the more you weigh, the more you will have to take to maintain healthy blood levels.

Two major forms of vitamin D are important to human beings: ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) and cholecalciferol (vitamin D3). Vitamin D2 is produced in plants. Vitamin D3 is produced by humans skin when it is exposed to the sun’s rays. Foods may also be fortified with vitamin D2 D3.

Vitamin D deficiency can impair normal bone metabolism leading to the following conditions: Rickets, a conditioned in children marked by soft and deformed bones, osteomalacia, adult rickets and osteoporosis, weak and porous bones.

Unlike most other nutrients, there is no Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for vitamin D. Instead the department of Agriculture uses a measure called ―Adequate Intake Value based on what’s needed to keep bones healthy. According to the Food Nutrition Board at the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, which created the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs), individuals should be getting the following amounts of vitamin D daily in their diets:

• Children up to 13 years: 5 mcg (200 IU)

• 14 – 18 years: 5 mcg (200 IU)

• 19 – 50 years: 5 mcg (200 IU)

• 51 – 70 years: 10 mcg (400 IU)

• 71 and up: 15 mcg (600 IU)

Most of the food containing vitamin D comes from fortified foods, in vitamin D is artificially added. US milk is fortified with 100 IU per cup of vitamin D. Some fatty fish, such as herring, salmon, tuna and mackerel as well as fish liver oils are considered to be the best sources. Some vitamin D is also present in beef liver, cheese and egg yolks. Most of these are vitamin D3.

A large number of studies have provided evidence that vitamin D may play a significant role in cancer prevention. Epidemiological findings combined with newly discovered means suggest that raising the minimum vitamin D levels in blood would prevent about 58,000 new cases of breast cancer and 49,000 cases of colorectal cancer each year and three quarters of deaths from these diseases. Evidence suggests that improving vitamin D status with vitamin D supplementation could reduce cancer incidence and death at a low cost and few or no adverse effects.

Vitamin D is so important that our bodies make it by itself, but only aft er skin is exposed to enough sunlight. And dark skin absorbs less sunlight, so people with dark skin do get as much vitamin D from sun exposure as do light-skinned people. Older people are also at risk for vitamin D defi ciency. They are less likely to spend ti me in the sun and have fewer ―receptors in their skin that convert sunlight to vitamin D, may not get it in their diet, may have trouble absorbing vitamin D even if they do get it in their diet and may have more trouble converti ng dietary vitamin D to a useful form due to aging kidneys. In fact the risk for vitamin D defi ciency in people over 65 years is very high.

The factors that aff ect UV radiati on exposure and research to date on the amount of sun exposure needed to maintain adequate vitamin D levels make it diffi cult to provide general guidelines. It has been suggested by some vitamin D researchers, for example, that approximately 5-30 minutes of sun exposure between 10 AM and 3 PM at least twice a week to the face, arms, legs, or back without sunscreen usually lead to suffi cient vitamin D synthesis and that the moderate use of commercial tanning beds that emit 2%-6% UVB radiati on is also eff ecti ve. Despite the importance of the sun to vitamin D synthesis, it is prudent to limit exposure of skin to sunlight and UV radiati on from tanning beds. UV radiati on is a carcinogen responsible for most of the esti mated 1.5 million skin cancers and the 8,000 deaths due to metastati c melanoma that occur annually in the United States. Individuals with limited sun exposure need to include good sources of vitamin D in their diet or take a supplement.

According to the Nati onal Insti tute of Health, the maximum upper limit for vitamin D is 25 mcg (1,000 IU) for children up to age 12 and 50 mcg (2,000 IU) for everyone else. But some recent studies suggest that healthy adults can tolerate more than 10,000 IU of vitamin D per day.

If the multi vitamin you take does not have 1,000 IU of vitamin D, you may want to consider adding a separate vitamin D supplement. Many supplements are being reformulated to contain vitamin D3 instead of vitamin D2. Both forms eff ecti vely raise serum 25(OH) D levels.

The research suggests that vitamin D has great potenti al as one part of a strategy to lower cancer risk. For some of us, boosti ng intake to the top of the safety margin — about 1,000 to 2,000 IU per day — may be needed for lower cancer risk.

One soft gel of vitamin D 2,000 IU is equivalent to:10 3 oz cans of tuna fi sh20 cups of forti fi ed milk100 egg yolks50 cups of forti fi ed cereal

Find Your Vitamin D Level

Getting your vitamin D level is a little more tricker. You need to get a simple blood test to find out appropriate ng/ml level. Several years ago, a range of 20–100 ng/ml was considered normal. Just recently, this range was raised to 32–100 ng/ml. Make sure to ask your healthcare provider what your actual vitamin D level is.

Mechanisms by which vitamin D may modify cancer risk are not fully understood. Laboratory studies have shown that vitamin D promotes cellular differentiation, decreases cancer cell growth, and stimulates cell death.

Interactions with Medications

Vitamin D supplements have the potential to interact with several types of medications. A few examples are provided below. Individuals taking these medications on a regular basis should discuss vitamin D intakes with their healthcare providers. Steroids Corticosteroid medications such as prednisone, often prescribed to reduce inflammation, can reduce calcium absorption and impair vitamin D metabolism. These effects can further contribute to the loss of bone and the development of osteoporosis associated with their long-term use. Other medications, both the weight-loss drug orlistat (brand names Xenical and alli) and the cholesterol-lowering drug cholestyramine (brand names Questran, LoCholest, and Prevalite) can reduce the absorption of vitamin D and other

Low Levels Of Vitamin D Link To Cognitive Problems In Older People

Researchers from the Peninsula Medical School, the University of Cambridge and the University of Michigan, have for the first time identified a relationship between Vitamin D, the “sun-shine vitamin”, and cognitive impairment in a large-scale study of older people. The importance of these findings lies in the connection between cognitive function and dementia: people who have impaired cognitive function are more likely to develop dementia.

health Stress Management

Can stress make you sick? The answer is most definitely yes. However, if you want to avoid it you should learn what stress is and how it affects your body. Some causes of stress are obvious, job loss, a divorce, the death of a loved one. But small daily demands and hassles such as work deadlines, finding child care or racing to get home to make dinner also contribute to your stress level.

Some stress is normal and even useful. Stress can help if you need to work hard or react quickly. But if stress happens too of-ten or lasts too long it can have bad effects. Chronic or uninter-rupted stress is very harmful. Responses to stress can be physi-cal, such as a headache; emotional, such as fear or sadness; and mental, such as increased anxiety.

It is important to take breaks and decompress. If you cannot return to a relaxed state, then the stress becomes negative. The changes in your body (increased heart rate, higher blood pres-sure and muscle tension) start to take their toll, often leading to mental and physical exhaustion and illness. Too much stress can cause problems and affect health, productivity and relationships.

Preventing and managing stress can help lower your risk of seri-ous health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure and depression. It is important to figure out what causes stress for you. Everyone feels and responds to stress differently.

Learning to identify your problems and implement solutions is the key to successful stress relief. The first step is to identify your stress triggers.

Once you have identified a stressful situation you can begin to think about strategies to make it less so. For example, keeping a stress journal can help you find out what is causing your stress and how much you feel. This can help you take steps to reduce the stress or at least handle it better.

Recognizing your Stress Signals

Begin by asking yourself the following questions:

• Do I often feel out of control?

• Do I feel constant pressure to achieve?

• Do I have difficulty concentrating?

• Do I have feelings of depression, helplessness, anxiety or panic?

• Do I have difficulty falling asleep or wake up during the night?

• Do I regularly feel the need to smoke or drink to relax?

If you consistently answer yes to even one of these questions, your body may be sending you signals that you are stressed. Pinpoint those situations, people or places that consistently trigger stress. Make changes to those situations to avoid them as much as possible. To successfully manage stressful situations, consider the following tips:

Exercise

Exercise has been proven to reduce stress. While exercise increases your overall health and sense of well-being it also has a direct stress reducing benefit: Physical activity helps increase your brain’s production of feel-good neurotransmitters, called endorphins. Some know this function as a runner’s or s wimmer’s high.

Additionally, you will actually begin to shed your daily tensions through the movement and focus on the activity your doing. Regular exercise can help improve your mood by increasing your self-confidence and lower symptoms associated with mild depression and anxiety.

Exercise on a regular basis helps decrease the production of stress hormones and associated neuro-chemicals. Studies have found that exercise is a potent antidepressant and sleeping aid.

Walking is a good way to get started. You don’t need to pound the pavement or push yourself really hard to reap benefits. One study showed that people who “meditated” or just paid atten-tion to their footsteps (counting one, two, one, two) while they walked reported decreases in anxiety, along with fewer negative and more positive feelings about themselves. Actually the ben-efits were equal to those associated with brisk walking.

Mindfulness Techniques

• Plan your time: Learn better ways to manage your time. You may get more done with less stress if you make a schedule. Prioritize which things are most important to you and do those first.

• Find better ways to cope. Look at how you have been deal-ing with stress and be honest about what works and what does not. Think about other things that might work better.

• Try new ways of thinking. When you find yourself starting to worry, try to stop the thoughts. Work on letting go of things you cannot change.

• Prepare yourself ahead of time for stressful events like a job interview or a hard conversation with a loved one.

• Speak up. Not being able to discuss your needs and con-cerns creates stress and can make negative feelings worse. Assertive communication can allow you to express your feelings in a thoughtful way.

• Create predictability in your work and home life as much as possible. Structure and routine in your life can at least help provide a framework from which to respond to the unexpected.

Meditation

Meditation is one of the most popular methods to achieve mental and physical relaxation. There are thousands of different types of and many can be learned on your own or in fitness classes. The meditative state is one in which there is a deep centering and focusing on the core of one’s being, there is a quieting of the mind, emotions and body. Yoga is a popular and effective form of mediation in which you are taught the art of breathing, mediation and posing. Yoga brings together physical and metal disciplines to achieve peacefulness of body and mind, helping you relax and manage stress and anxiety.

Massage

According to the Associated Bodywork and Massage Profession-als (ABMP) organization, massage therapy has many healthful benefits including:

• Increasing circulation

• Stimulating the lymph system to help the body fight toxic invaders

• Relaxing and softening injured and sore muscles

• Reducing cramping

Massage therapy typically enhances relaxation and reduces stress by stimulating the release of certain chemicals in the body such as serotonin or endorphins. There are many types of massage therapy. In all of them therapists press, rub and other-wise manipulate the muscles and soft tissues of the body, often varying pressure and movement. In general, the intent is to relax the soft tissues and increase delivery of blood and oxygen to the massaged area.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils from plants for heal-ing. Whether inhaled or applied to your skin aromatherapy has gained attention as an alternative treatment for stress and other health problems. This is how it is believed to work:

The “smell” receptors in your nose communicate with parts of your brain that serve as storehouses for emotions and memories. When you breathe in essential oil molecules, some researchers believe that they stimulate those parts of your brain and influence physical, emotional and mental health. For example, lavender is believed to stimulate the activity of brain cells similar to the way some sedative medications work.

Finally, stay in tune with your body and mind and try to prevent and combat stress by recognizing those factors that contribute to it. Being able to control stress is a learned behavior, and stress can be effectively managed by taking small steps toward changing unhealthy behaviors.

Eat In, Stay Thin! How to Enjoy Lighter Versions of Your Favorite Restaurant Fare By Becky Ellis

Whether your New Year’s resolution was to lose a few pounds or cut back on spending, one of the easiest ways to trim the fat is by eating out less. But even when it’s busting your budget or derailing your diet, it can be tough to give up your favorite flavorful restaurant fare.

“People go to these chains because they’re getting something they can depend on,” says Todd Wilbur, author of nine Top Secret Recipes books. “They’re getting consistency. Most people have regular items they order, they can go to any Chili’s or P.F. Chang’s and get that thing that they love.”

Wilbur spends his days “cloning” America’s favorite restaurant and brand-name foods to come up with recipes that allow people to make them at home. Two of his books, Top Secret Recipes Lite! and Low-Fat Top Secret Recipes, clone low-fat or low-cal dishes, or recreate popular items in lower-calorie versions. But he says you can create lighter versions of any of these restaurant dishes with a few simple substitutions.

“There are a lot of things you can do to cut a little bit of the fat or calories out,” says Wilbur. “The easiest is when you’ve got a standard ingredient—cheese, ground beef, mayonnaise—get the low fat versions.”

Cheeses made with 2% or skim milk, lean ground beef (or even leaner ground turkey) and low-fat mayonnaise, sour cream and cream cheese are easy to find in your supermarket, and though you might discount the 25 or 50 calorie difference per serving, they add up. Trim just one hundred calories from one meal each day, and you’ll lose 10 pounds this year with no other changes to your diet or exercise routine.

Best of all, when you recreate dishes at home, you choose where to cut back on calories while still enjoying the flavors cooked up in your favorite restaurants.

“With these recipes, you learn the secrets to how to make your food taste like the food that created these multimillion dollar companies... you’re going to learn how to make your food taste better.”

But despite all of his hard work, Wilbur says there are a few differences between the food you create from his recipes and what you’ll find at your favorite eatery.

“I get a lot of comments that the food (made from Top Secret Recipes) comes out better... it’s fresher, it’s coming from your house, it’s coming from someone you love.”

Top Secret Recipes version of Chevys® Mesquite-Grilled BBQ Chicken Quesadilla (Reduced-Fat)With this secret recipe from “Low-Fat Top Secret Recipes,” it isn’t necessary to cook the chicken over a mesquite grill; an easier way to get the flavor of mesquite is to soak the chicken in a marinade made with mesquite-flavored liquid smoke. In the restaurant these are made with red chili tortillas. Since these type of tortillas can be a drag to track down, especially in fat-free versions, we’ll use plain fat-free tortillas for our tasty reduced-fat clone.

1/2 cup water

1 teaspoon mesquite-flavored liquid smoke

1/2 teaspoon salt

A dash of ground black pepper

spiCy BBq sAuCE

1/2 cup Bull’s-Eye Original BBQ Sauce

1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

A dash of chili powder

1 boneless chicken breast

1/3 cup sliced red bell pepper

1/3 cup sliced green bell pepper

1/3 cup sliced Spanish onion

2 large (12-inch) fat-free flour tortillas

1 1/3 cups shredded Monterey Jack cheese

1. Prepare the marinade by combining the ingredients in a medium bowl. Add chicken breast fillet to the bowl, cover, and chill for one hour.

2. When the chicken is finished marinating, preheat your grill to high temperature.

3. As grill is heating, prepare the spicy BBQ sauce by mixing the ingredients in a small bowl.

4. Throw the chicken on the grill and cook it for 4 to 5 minutes per side or until it’s done. When the chicken is done cooking, chop it into bite-size pieces.

5. Spray a light coating of nonstick cooking spray on a medium skillet over medium heat. Saute the sliced peppers and onion in the pan for 4 to 5 minutes or until the veggies start to brown.

6. Set a large skillet over medium/low heat.

7. Put one flour tortilla in the skillet and sprinkle 1/3 cup of cheese over half of the tortilla. Spoon half of the vegetables over the cheese, followed by half of the chicken.

8. Spoon a generous portion of the spicy BBQ sauce over the chicken, followed by another 1/3 cup of cheese.

9. Fold the other side of the tortilla over the filling, and press down so that it stays in place.

10. By this time, the cheese on the bottom should be melted. If not, wait another minute or so, then flip the quesadilla over and heat for another couple minutes or until all of the cheese has melted.

11. Slide the quesadilla onto a plate and slice it into 4 pieces. Repeat for the second quesadilla and serve immediately with salsa on the side.

Serves four people as an appetizer.

Top Secret Recipes version of Olive Garden® Chicken Caesar Sandwich (Reduced-Fat)This sandwich would normally have approximately 20.5 grams of fat because of the Caesar dressing, but if we use some low-fat and fat-free ingredients, we can reduce those fat grams by better than half of the original.

The chicken will need to marinate for several hours, so start this one early, or even better, the day before you plan to eat it.

Nutritional Facts (per sandwich)

Original: 20.5 grams fat 543 calories

Low-Fat version: 9 grams fat 450 calories

Four skinless chicken breast fillets

1 cup water

1 cup pineapple juice

1 tablespoon lime juice

2 teaspoons soy sauce

1 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon liquid smoke

1/4 teaspoon onion powder

1/4 teaspoon pepper

1/8 teaspoon garlic

CAEsAr drEssing

1/4 cup fat-free mayonnaise

1 tablespoon egg substitute

1 teaspoon vinegar

1 1/2 teaspoons grated Parmesan cheese

1/8 teaspoon coarse-ground pepper

1/8 teaspoon garlic powder

1/8 teaspoon salt

dash onion powder

3 drops Worchestershire sauce

4 Italian or sourdough sandwich rolls

2 cups chopped romaine lettuce

1. Cut each chicken breast in half. Fold a piece of plastic wrap around one piece of chicken and pound flat (to about 1/4-inch thick) with a mallet. The chicken should be slightly larger in diameter than the sandwich rolls. Repeat with the remaining pieces.

2. Combine the ingredients for the marinade in a medium bowl. Add the chicken, cover, and chill for at least 4 hours. Overnight is best.

3. While the chicken marinates, combine all of the Caesar dressing ingredients in a small bowl. Cover and chill.

4. When the chicken has marinated, preheat your barbecue or indoor grill to high heat. Grill the chicken for 2 to 3 minutes per side, or until done.

5. Use the grill to brown the faces of each roll.

6. Build each sandwich by spreading about a half cup of lettuce on one of the bottom buns. Drizzle about a tablespoon of the dressing over the lettuce. Next, stack two pieces of chicken on the sandwich. Place one piece of the chicken slightly off to one side and then position the second piece off to the outer side but overlapping the first piece.

7. Finish off the sandwich with the top half of the roll. Repeat the process to build the remaining sandwiches and serve.

Serves four.

nORTHeRn neW MeXiCO predominantly desert state that is home to Native Americans, Hispanic and Westerners alike, New Mexico is known for being the center of priceless American Indian history and culture, as well as its characteristic southwestern architecture. It is a region teeming with art and artists, the most famous of which was the late painter, Georgia O’Keefe.

So why should you journey all the way to Northern New Mexico? One reason is to soak up a part of American history that’s really rich and colorful as the Sangre de Cristo (the Blood of Christ) mountains. There are few places in this country where you can see beautiful, mocha-colored Adobe houses, learn about Native American culture, visit art galleries as well as visit Loas Alamos, where the first atom bomb was developed.

Santa Fe is a historical gather place you don’t want to miss. It has several cultural spots that are enchanting, yet highly cultured. If you are a history buff, you can’t miss the original Plaza, which is the town marketplace that sells handicrafts as well as houses several stores and the famous La Fonda hotel.

Santa Fe nestles at the foot of the Rocky Mountains at 7,000

feet and is known as the “City Different.” The city celebrates its 400th cultural anniversary this year, and it is the oldest capital city in the United States!

There are so many interesting bits of information pertinent to this region that you’ll find more odd than not. Ben Hur was written here, D.H. Lawrence lived here, and Albert Einstein, when he was assisting with the Manhattan Project, visited the famous La Fonda hotel.

One of the main attractions in Santa Fe is the famous La Fonda On the Plaza hotel, which sits on oldest hotel corner in America. The Spaniards came to Santa Fe in 1607 and among the earli-est businesses established was an inn (or fonda) at the same location where the modern La Fonda Hotel lies. Currently, it is a repository of richly adorned rooms and historical tales that you’ll never tire of. It is a considered a national landmark and treasure. Visit Lafonda at www.lafondasantafe.com.

Another key attraction in Santa Fe is the Palace of the Gover-nors, which flanks the buzzing center of town called the Plaza. The palace itself was constructed in the 17th century, and was Spain’s seat of government for the entire region that is the

Southwest. Go to www.palaceofthegovernors.org to learn more.

You also can’t miss the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of as-sisi that was reconstructed to replace an older church that was destroyed during the Pueblo Revolt of 1869. This catholic church has a figure of a Native Indian Saint in front of it and is almost dead center of the plaza. There are masses that are held daily.

The Georgia O’keefe Museum boasts an extraordinary amount of work of the painter who was and will remain a Southwestern legend. The museum hosts more than 3,000 of her pieces including sketches, watercolors, oil paintings and sculpture. See her paintings at www.okeeffemuseum.org

If you have a thirst for art, you must visit Canyon road, which is a mile long feast of all sorts of galleries filled with art from local artists for nearly a century. Whatever type of painting or art form you crave, this place – the second largest art market in the nation – will offer you what you need. There are more than 100 art galleries and studios, specialty shops and studios. Visit www.canyonroadarts.com for more information.

A 45 minute ride away is Los Alamos, where they developed the atom bomb. It houses the Los Alamos National Laboratory that is one of the largest research and scientific institutions in the country, and that still conducts multidisciplinary research in several important scientific fields.

FORTWORTH, TeXaS: COWBOYS & CULTURe

This city, the 17th largest in the United States, offers visitors many things beyond cowboys and cattle. It offers culture and a dazzling array of visitor options, from the Historic Stockyards, museums, a vibrant downtown area and the famous Texas Motor Speedway.

When you think about FortWorth, you’ll hardly think about museums, but it indeed is the “museum capital of the South-west.” Entertainment flows here like good wine. Whatever option strikes your fancy – be it art, ballet, the theatre, the Vintage Flying Museum or the Texas Civil War Museum, FortWorth has so many artistic entertainment options that are apt to satisfy every family that comes to town.

Choose to walk around the nationally renowned Fort Worth Zoo, play with inter active exhibits at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History and check out NASCAR and the Indy Car racing at the Texas Motor Speedway.

In fact, a weekend may be all you need. Even the main site of

FortWorth, www.forthworth.com has tips on how to get the most from this city during a simple weekend, from pub crawls to taking in a symphony.

And if you’re truly a cowboy fan, don’t forget the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame and Wagon Collection. For places to stay, there’s everything from the newly minted Omni Fort Worth Hotel that boasts a world-class Steak & Chop House and a terrific wine store to the Marriott. The Omni FortWorth is a downtown landmark, and is sculpted from native stone and rich hardwoods and is housed in a terrific, tall house of tiered glass. And surprisingly, the rates are pretty budget friendly, from $199 per night.

HiLTOn Head iSLand: a FaMiLY-FRiendLY, dRiVe-in iSLand

This drive destination is off the coast of South Carolina and is warm when most the Northeastern Coast is freezing. In fact, it’s a great “hidden” destination that is perfect if you want to take a break from the cold winter months (and who doesn’t?)

Getting here is easy – and once you’re here, you’ll hardly want to leave. Drive to the island from I-95, taking exit 8 which is eight miles from the Georgia Border. This becomes Highway 218 and you’ll cross the bridge that leads to Hilton Head Island.

It has been referred to as a perfect family destination because of its beaches, restaurants, golf courses, shopping and accommoda-tions. Don’t let the word “island” fool you – this place has over 250 restaurants, and over 200 shopping outlets. It has so many accommodations to suit every traveler’s need and budget.

There are food and wine festivals that allow you to experience fine dining as well as the native Ol’ Fashioned Gullah Breakfast at a local Baptist Church (this is beyond your traditional Egg McMuffin. This is biscuits, shrimp, grits, oyster stew and more).

Now the island is not all Gullah fare, of course. Fine dining transcends to another level here, and you can get anything from Parmesan Crusted Flounder with Pasta to delicious desserts like Key Lime Mousse with Oreo Crust.

So, assuming that getting to the island is not an issue, you’ll probably be wondering if there are budget friendly places to stay. Indeed! There are, of course, highly-rated star hotels like the Inn at Harbor Town and The Sea Pines Resort, but there are afford-ably-priced hotels like the Hilton Head Marriott Resort & Spa that has rooms starting from as low as $129 per night. What more could you ask for?Visit www.hiltonheadisland.org for more information.

Penelope Cruz

life Celeb Close-Up

Page 89: CVS BH115 Reinventing Beauty Magazine 1st Quarter, 2010

After seeing Pedro Almodavar’s Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down at a very young age, Cruz took a walk, though about it, then knew she wanted to commit herself to the acting profession.

Indeed, even as a toddler, she was prone to being a performer, re-enacting several TV commercials for the amusement of her family. As she grew as an actress, her work was marked by accolades in films such as The Girl of Your dreams and Belle epoque. Her American films have included Blow, Vanilla Sky, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, elegy and nine.

Cruz first rose to prominence when she appeared in the video “La fuerza del destino” for the Spanish synthpop group Mecano. Her first major films included Jamon, Jamon and Belle Epoque when she was barely sixteen.

Cruz is multi-talented and speaks four languages: Spanish, Italian, French and English – a factor that has served her well in her versatile acting career. There are several movies that made Cruz a household name, but Vanilla Sky, Volver, Vicky Cristina Barcelona and nine are considered her crème de la crème.

Vanilla Sky & Volver

In 2001, the world saw Penelope Cruz as the sweet, innocent girlfriend to Tom Cruise. Cruz played Sofia Serrano, whose close encounters with David Aames (Cruise) leads her to get entangled in a dark mesh that is a psychological thriller.

During this time, she and Cruise also became an item (“Cruz and Cruise” became the butt of several late night show jokes) for three years, and she even considered joining the Church of Scientology. She left Cruise in early 2005 to begin dating actor Matthew McConaughey while they were filming the movie sahara. In 2006, she starred in the moving Pedro Almodovar film, Volver.

Volver won awards for Best Actress and Best Screenplay at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival and Cruz was nominated for Best Actress at the 2007 Academy Awards. Volver is the story about ghosts, parental relationships and estrangement that ends in reconciliation. Cruz’s masterful portrayal as one of the sisters whose parents were supposedly killed in a fire touched audiences because of her ability to remain both calm yet terrified in the face of so many life-changing events.

The movie was a precursor to Cruz’s crazy portrayal as Maria Elena in Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona

The award winning performance by Cruz as Maria Elena in Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona shows Cruz in all her Spanish red-blooded, passionate glory. This is the same passion that she brings to the surface in nine, and the heated craze, almost Carmen-like passion she displayed in the film that made the Oscar an easy cinch.

“I don’t like her for you, I don’t trust her,” she says to Javier Bardem who starts courting Scarlett Johansson in the film. Her almost childlike passion for Bardem and jealousy of his newfound romance creates a boiling, almost volcanic rage that erupts at the end of the film and results in a meteoric performance that is both wild and superbly controlled. She started dating actor Javier

Bardem while filming the movie.

In this film, Cruz showed Hollywood she was not just another pretty face. She really could act. Yes, she was the enticing other woman in Vanilla Sky, the one with the thick Spanish accent, long hair and sultry-sweet looks, but in Vicky Cristina Barcelona she brought her acting to a completely new, dramatic level. Her Oscar winning performance in Vicky Cristina Barcelona showcased the core of Cruz: a feisty independent woman with a flair for drama and exaggeration.

Nine

Penelope Cruz as Carla Albanese in Rob Marshall’s nine gives a sexy, seductive performance as the magnet and high-maintenance mistress in Italian filmmaker’s Guido Contini’s life. Renee Zellweger was Marshall’s first choice for Carla, but Cruz won the role after several auditions.

The fact that she could dance and sing was an added bonus for Rob Marshall who cast her in nine. Marshall, who directed Chicago, has a love for the intricate song and dance, and Cruz studied classical ballet for nine years at Spain’s National Conservatory, and also studied jazz under Raul Caballero in Madrid.

The number Nine refers to the legendary Frederico Fellini’s movie 8 ½, which was his ninth movie, and is also the age of young Guido in the flashback. The movie is loosely based on Fellini’s masterpiece, with the star of the movie, Guido, as Fellini himself.

In her interview for The Oprah Show Cruz said, “I was terrified” when she was asked to sing in the movie. “I have never sung professionally before; I have only sang at home because I own a karaoke machine.” In the role of Carla in nine, Cruz oozes a seductive, almost wistful charm that comes so naturally from her Spanish roots.

Despite her terror and her aversion to singing in public, Cruz performed an outrageous cabaret number in nine for which she will be remembered for a long time, even though the critics panned the whole film as lackluster and uninspired.

Cruz as Humanitarian

In recent years, Cruz has demonstrated that she is not only an actress but a humanitarian with a deep heart. While she attended the Golden Globes in January, she made it clear that even though she was at an awards ceremony, the tragedy in Haiti weighed heavily on her mind. She has devoted a good amount of time and money to charity as well.

As a burgeoning fashion designer and along with her sister, she designed a 25-piece collection in 2007 for the Barcelona-based fashion chain Mango. Currently, Cruz is spokes-model for L’Oreal. She has a very solid head on her shoulders and has said, “My ambition is to be happy.”

“i wanted to become an actress when i was thirteen, when i saw Pedro almodovar’s Tie Me Up, Tie Me down, says Cruz.”

life Fur, Dander, and Paw-Prints, Oh My! Dog Grooming Made Easy By Megan Sarah Johnson We love our dogs like they’re members of

our family. We bring them everywhere we can in the backseat of the car. We consider laying on the couch without them an incomplete activity. And if we were French, they would dine across from us in restaurants. But when your dog gets into something that smells not so nice, this astounding love for man’s best friend can quickly transform into a gag-inducing abhorrence. Private groomers can cost serious money, and large pet chains don’t give your dog personalized attention. So throw on an old tee-shirt and sweats, fill up the bathtub, and prepare to get sudsy. Here’s our guide to grooming your furry friend right at home.

Grooming Tips for Short-haired dogs

Short-haired dogs have coats that are extremely easy to take care of. However, that doesn’t take the dog’s breed and disposition into play, so don’t assume your dog will cooperate with a trip to the bathtub. The first step of grooming your dog is to find a brush that gets rid of excess hair and dander. Grooming gloves are easy to use slip-on mitts that allow you to stroke your dog while removing excess hair with the mitt.

Because of the short prongs on the mitts, this tool is best used for dogs without extremely dense hair, such as Beagles and Weimaraners. If you want to shampoo your dog, it’s going to take a little more elbow grease. If your dog is teacup-size, consider purchasing a baby bathtub that fits right in the kitchen sink. Plastic sinks cost around ten dollars, and can be found in your local Target or Wal-Mart store. You can try to wash your dog in the sink without a baby bathtub, but if you have a disposal you should avoid this to prevent injuries for your dog and yourself. A few dollars is absolutely worth the safety of your loyal buddy.

Grooming Tips for Long-haired dogs

Whether you’ve got a Golden Retriever, Lab, or Husky, you’re

familiar with the bizarre and repulsive smells that can latch onto your dog like a bad case of fleas. Luckily, some dogs in the retriever family, like Goldens and Labs, are so eager to please their owners that they don’t mind getting a little wet. The term “retriever” is derived from the fact that these dogs were originally bred to retrieve the carcasses of animals their master hunted down. Use a heavier brush to groom their coats almost every day, especially if your dog is a chronic shedder. In the winter, being inside with the heat turned on can increase your dog’s shedding, so consider grooming every day. If you want to use your own bathtub to bathe your dog, place the pup in the tub and turn on warm water that will neither scald nor freeze your dog. Consider the temperature you’d like to take a bath in, and go for something a little cooler. A bathtub cleaning session with your pet can be extremely easy if you have a hand-held shower head. But if you only have that heavy shower head in the sky, grab a large mixing bowl or Tupperware bowl to rinse the soap from your dog’s coat. Do not let the giant showerhead rain down on you and your dog. It will be a highly messy, highly slippery situation for the both of you.

Do you ever walk down a busy city street and see a dog whose hair is longer than yours? Amazingly enough, many dog owners out there like human-length hair on dogs. This means they have an extreme level of dedication to their pet, as well as a vast knowledge of grooming. If you do have a dog that requires a serious haircut, you might want to step aside and as a professional for help. But if you think you can handle the task without pricking yourself or your dog with scissors, go right ahead! Be sure you have a high-quality comb, brush, pair of clippers, and scissors to begin with. The rules to trimming your dog’s hair are similar to those of cutting a human’s hair: Do small pieces bit by bit to prevent chopping off heavy duty chunks and leaving the look uneven. If you need a little extra instruction, turn to your always-useful friend, the Internet. On sites like Ehow.com and Youtube, you can find professional dog groomers who have created videos of how to groom every type of dog. Just keep in

mind that anyone can post something on the Internet. It’s up to you to decide who is trustworthy.

Battling the Skunk Smell

If there is one thing dog owners do not want their dogs to get into, it’s a fight with nature’s striped-head nemesis: The Skunk. Forget Pepe Le Peu, because there is nothing suave and friendly about your neighborhood skunk. And unfortunately, they are often intimidated by the size of dogs, and will use the only power they have to fight back: The dreaded spray from their behind. Now we know what you’re thinking….You’re wishing you took out that stock in V8 juice so you would have enough tomato juice to douse your St. Bernard. Well, contrary to popular belief, tomato juice isn’t really the best method of getting rid of the smell because it simply masks the odor instead of getting rid of it.

When you realize your dog has been sprayed, immediately change into clothing you won’t mind getting filthy. Be sure to check your dog over for scratches or bites, because skunks can carry rabies. However, do not let this fear overwhelm you. If you’re a responsible dog owner, you probably have had your dog vaccinated long ago. Usher your dog immediately into the bathtub or towards the closest hose if it’s warm enough out. If you have latex gloves for dishwashing, this would be the best time to put them on. Immediately rinse your dog off with warm water, and lather him up with dishwashing soap. You can also add in some baking soda for its abrasive cleansing quality and power to disguise smells.

Scrub your furry friend like it’s nobody’s business but be sure not to scratch their skin. Chances are if you wouldn’t like the way it feels, neither will they. Also, some of the best skunk-odor removal products are sold right at your veterinarian’s office, or at PetSmart or Petco. These specially designed shampoos are strictly for use when your dog has been sprayed, so don’t use them on a regular basis. SOS (Skunk Odor Shampoo) and DoggiClean Skunk Spray are two popular brands help to alleviate skunk odors. Just remember, if it doesn’t work the first time, give it a second shot.

ear Cleaning

Our addiction to Q-tips means we favor squeaky clean ears. But have you ever heard that Q-tips can be bad for you? In the same vein as over-cleaning human ears, you want to be sure you don’t over-clean your dog’s ears. Usually, your veterinarian will do an ear cleaning at their yearly checkup. However, dogs with larger ears that flop over need their owners to step in once in awhile.

Flopped-over ears are a sign that dirt and bacteria get trapped inside more easily, and those dogs need extra attention to prevent chronic ear infection. Take a wet rag or thick paper towel and wipe the outer ear and its bordering areas. Chances are your dog won’t like this experience, but it’s vital to keeping man’s best friend healthy. Just make sure you don’t attempt to reach all the way inside. Leave these types of procedures for your yearly veterinarian visit.

Bad Breath

Good ol’ Fido. He runs up to you ready to slop a big kiss on your face after you’ve been gone all day. You wrap your arms around him and….you nearly pass out from the heinous smell of his breath. Dogs are just as vulnerable to bad breath as humans,

and the fact that they often dine on random items found in your backyard doesn’t help much. If your dog is willing to stay put long enough, you can in fact brush their teeth quite successfully.

One of the most popular products for keeping dog teeth green is Petrodex’s Poultry Flavored Dog Kit. The small brush and meat-flavored toothpaste may sound like a nightmare to you, but it’s a doggie dream. Whatever cleaning tool you choose, be sure to never use human toothpaste on your dog. Dogs do not have the ability to spit, which means they will ingest all of the toothpaste. Another option is frequently giving your dogs raw bones. However, you have to keep their stomachs in mind at this point, because too much of a good thing is way too much for your furry friend. Too many bones will upset their stomach, and cause them to gain weight.

No matter what type of dog you have, animals deserve to be treated with the same degree of respect as humans. If you are unsure that you can properly groom your pet, ask a professional if they could guide you. Owning a pet is a major responsibility, but it can be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life if you do it right. Now go forth, and groom!

no one needs an introduction to tennis ace Serena Williams. Younger sibling of Venus Williams, Serena is currently ranked World number 1 female tennis player by the WTa (Women’s Tennis association), the winner of 23 Grand Slam titles, and has earned two Olympic gold medals in women’s doubles. She has won more Grand Slam titles than any other active female player in history and has won more career prize money than any other female athlete in history. She’s only 28 years old!

Some incredible statistics, but very few people know how much Serena Williams does beyond the 110% on the tennis court. That well-honed game strategy is aligned with a keen business sense: she co-founded a skincare company, manages her own successful jewelry and fashion line and keeps her hand in several other ventures as well, daily. As if that isn’t enough, she is deeply committed to children’s welfare around the world.

We interviewed Serena to find out what makes this dynamic personality tick off the court. Here’s what she shared with us:

Beauty Handbook: You’ve accomplished more than most people dream about. What’s next on your list of goals?

Serena Williams: Well, of course I want to go on winning more Grand Slams and work on breaking and setting new records! Off the court, I plan on continuing to do philanthropic work here (in the USA) as well as around the world. In fact, we’re opening another school in Africa soon which I’m really excited about because it is so close to my heart. I know the impact it has on the lives of the children in need. I’m also excited about building my business career off the court. I now have an ownership interest in the Miami Dolphins; I recently launched my own jewelry and fashion line at HSN (Home Shopping Network) called “Serena Signature Statement” and I cofounded a great innovation skincare company called MISSION Skincare® that I just launched this year with CVS/Pharmacy nationwide.

BH: How does it feel like to be the kind of celebrity you are? Is it easy? Do you love it? Or are there days when you wish you were not so recognizable?

SW: Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to go to places and not be recognized. I’m okay with being recognized though – it comes with the territory. I love that I can use my celebrity to be a positive role model for women and children all over the world. I learned very early in life that it’s not only what you achieve but what you do with those achievements that matter.

BH: What makes you tick? What is the secret behind such intense motivation?

SW: I’m a perfectionist. If things are not perfect, I notice it. That focus on perfection drives me to win on the court and it drives me to perform at the highest levels off the court – in life, business and charity.

BH: How is Aneres doing? What made you inspired to start your own clothing line?

SW: Aneres is a high-end line of fashion that will be in stores soon, but right now my fashion focus is on my HSN collection, “Serena Signature Statement.” The home shopping networking gave me the opportunity to express my love for fashion through a cute and very affordable clothing and accessory line. The products are great!

BH: Tell me about your work with the OWL Foundation.

SW: I’m passionate about philanthropy and making an impact on the lives of those less fortunate. Within the many philanthropic causes I support, it’s interesting that I have such a deep passion for children in need. My “Serena Williams Foundation” is heavily focused on helping children here and around the world, and my early experiences with the OWL Foundation definitely contributed to my passion for helping the children.

BH. How does it feel to be ranked World No. 1 by the WTA?

SW: I enjoy it and take it as it comes. I’m really laid back off the court, but definitely work very hard for my goals.

BH: How involved are you with MISSION Skincare and what products do you use daily?

SW: I’m actually a cofounder and owner of MISSION Skincare. I came together with a few other top athletes last year to launch the company because we realized there just wasn’t a “Nike” or “Gatorade” brand in the skincare category – so we decided to do something about it. We all felt like the lip balms, sunscreens and moisturizers in the market were just weak and figured if we created products that met our skincare needs, they’d work for

anyone and everyone. We all know great beauty starts with great skin, and that’s our mission. We already have a full line of over 24 skincare products and I love all of them, but my favorites are my pomegranate lip balmer with SPF 15, the new face moisturizer with SPF 30 and the new foot therapy lotion. I actually do use them and keep them with me wherever I go.

BH: How does it feel to play against your sister and how do you prepare for it? Do you treat it like just another match?

SW: Yeah, it’s like another match except for the fact that I’m playing the best player in tennis! I have to be 100% on my game all the time or I won’t win. She’s my best friend and my toughest opponent! She brings out the best in me!

BH: What’s a good movie you enjoyed recently? What is your favorite movie of all time?

SW: I saw The Hangover and liked it. I’m really looking forward to seeing Avatar and The Last Air Bender, too. Actually, I don’t have a favorite movie of all time. It’s impossible for me to pick only one.

BH: What’s on your iPod? Who are your favorite musicians?

SW: Green Day! They are such great artists. Their albums are amazing. I was so lucky to make it to some of their shows this year. They’re the best band in the whole world!

BH: Thanks Serena.

lifefinance Suze Orman: Create Your Path to WealthFinancial Tips to Get Your Life in Order

Invest in your future. Erase your debt. Cut up your credit cards. These are all things that Suze Orman would tell you if you met her face

to face, which we did – and yes, she did tell us that in no uncertain, beyond compromising tones. Everyone in America knows her as the financial guru who’s the darling of Oprah Winfrey and whose powerful message resonates on CNBC so often. The message is very clear: get out of debt, save money and prepare for retirement.

Suze Orman is the author of eight books and is a motivational speaker, appearing in front of thousands of fans live or on shows like Oprah and on CNBC. But few people know that despite her tremendous love for wealth and personal financial freedom, she was a struggling waitress in her early 30’s who desperately wanted to remain financially free. Her story is one of incredible dedication, passion and determination. Now, if a struggling waitress without a proper bank account and emergency funds can get out of that mess to become a mega millionaire, you too should be inspired to follow her footsteps.

The goal is financial security, and who doesn’t want that, especially during these times? Here are tips that Suze wants you to incorporate into your life, pronto.

1. Make sure you have at least eight months of emergency funds

You need to sock away money in a savings account, or some account that bears interest in case you or your loved one loses a job, gets hit by a truck, etc. etc. In these precarious economic times, chances are you may not be even able to meet your

mortgage payment or your rent, but save every penny you can for the future. Suze says you need at least eight months of survival cushion funds to weather the financial storm.

If you have that emergency fund already set up, then kudos. Pat yourself on the back. This is a great accomplishment and one that really should not go unnoticed. Now, focus your efforts on building your retirement account. The priority should be on building a nest egg that you can draw from when paychecks are no longer coming in.

2. Reduce your Credit Card Debt

Chances are you’ve already fallen for the credit card trap, and if so, you’re no different than any other smart or shopping-centric American out there. But Suze says that if you cannot pay your credit card debts now, then you’re in serious credit card trouble.

Let’s face it: you don’t want to bear the brunt of all these creditors phoning you and beating down your door, do you? And the last thing you want – if finances are already an issue – is for them to raise interest rates through the roof, and we’re seriously talking through the roof.

It’s simply no fun playing an APR of 20% or more when you could have been smart enough and not spent the credit card money in the first place. If you have credit card debt, then Suze advises you to stop requesting cash advances – those APRs are far above the traditional purchases rate.

So, if you have credit card debt, what’s a debtor to do? Here’s what Suze advises:

• Cut up your cards. I mean, right NOW. You have absolutely no

“With mortgage rates falling right now, this is a perfect opportunity to refinance your home.”

more credit and you will need to pay for future purchase in cash only.

• Then find out the largest amount you can afford to pay each month, and set up an automatic payment plan with the credit card company (or companies).

• Put any excess cash you have towards the credit cards with the highest APRs. Pay this card extra, whittle it down into bare nothing.

• Once this (highest APR card) is cleared, then switch that original payment amount to the credit card which has the next highest APR, and so on and so forth.

• This cumulative effect can snowball until all your credit cards are paid off – from the most risky to the least risky.

As Suze says, nothing beats the feeling out of remaining debt free! Once you have paid off all your credit cards, resist the temptation to start building up your debt. Invest in your retirement; your children’s college fund, home improvement to increase the value of your home – anything but plastic!

Take note of the new credit card regulations that come into effect in February. These limit the serious hikes the companies can make to your cards, but by the time this happens, several credit card companies have already wielded the axe to credit card customers and jacked up interest rates.

3. Park Your Cash in High Yield Deposits or Money Market Funds

There’s no sense in leaving cash unattended, just lying around in your checking account. Cash should be working overtime for you, and this means accruing interest in a money market, deposit or

savings account. Make sure your deposit is insured though, and let smart interest do the work for you.

4. As a rule of Thumb, Avoid Investing in the Stock Market Unless You’re Thinking Long Term

The Dow Jones Industrial Average has always gone up, but this is a long-term strategy, folks. If you want to invest in the market right now, then be prepared to keep your money in the market until you are good and ready to take it out (and we are talking years here).

Now may very well be a great time to invest in the market, but only if you have some spare mattress cash floating around. If funds are tight, then invest judiciously or don’t invest in the market until you can afford to do so.

5. Refinance Your Mortgage Now, if you Can Do So

With mortgage rates falling right now, this is a perfect opportunity to refinance your home. Make sure you can stay in your home long enough to recoup the closing costs so it makes financial sense for you to fork over that kind of cash (remember when you refinance, it’s like taking over a new mortgage entirely to pay for the purchase, so you’ll need to fork over closing costs as well.

Now, these tips are guidelines to get you started, so if you’re already half-way there (or beyond), then bravo! Although the saying goes, “Money is the root of all evil,” the truth is that you simply cannot exist (or live well) without it.

May your 2010 be a financially prosperous one! Visit Suze Orman online at www.suzeorman.com.

5Love Your Life: Simple Steps

Being happy takes practice, but the results are well worth the effort! So, what really makes you happy?

Mounting obligations and hectic schedules can make it all too easy to lose track. But whether it’s the little things in life that make you smile, or the joy of working toward a larger goal, focusing on your happiness each day can help protect your emotional well-being and your physical health.

Follow these simple steps to rediscover your passion for life.

1. Value Your Daily Diversions When you’re adding items to your to-do list, don’t forget the good stuff. If you look forward to reading in bed, going out to breakfast, taking long walks, listening to music, or just sitting quietly outside, make time for at least one of your favorite diversions every day.

Consider crossing out pesky items on your list that you keep saying you’re going to do but haven’t gotten to in over a year, like alphabetizing your bills or organizing your sock drawer. Or get rid of a time-consuming chore that isn’t enhancing your life one bit.

2. Build Your Strength and Independence We all have low-energy days, but if you can resist the urge to skip your daily workout when you’re feeling low, you’ll be rewarded both now and later. Try this trick: Tell yourself that you need to do only 10 minutes of exercise. Once you’re up and moving (and feeling better) you’ll most likely want to finish your workout. Even if you can’t push past the 10-minute mark on the occasional bad day, you’ll feel good about doing at least a little something. Sticking with an exercise plan helps you feel good about yourself, strengthens your immune system, and enhances production of mood-boosting hormones.

3. Squash Your Stressors Defuse daily hassles by practicing stress-reduction strategies. Try taking deep-breathing breaks throughout the day, inhaling

through your nose and then exhaling slowly through your mouth. Repeating this action three or four times allows more oxygen to get into your bloodstream, creating a feeling of calm. Progressive muscle relaxation, yoga, and meditation also are effective ways of reducing tension, stress, depression, and anxiety. And a brisk 10-minute walk will do far more to dissipate your stress and lift your spirits than eating the bad-for-you snacks you might crave when feeling frantic.

4. Celebrate and Share Your Skills Volunteer at a local school, club, or community organization. Not only will sharing your unique talents and expertise benefit others, but research shows that volunteering can make you happier and improve your well-being, too. Feeling engaged and involved in your local community is good for your emotional health. It’s also an opportunity to learn new skills and meet new people. Win-win.

5. Appreciate the People Around You Unwind and share a few laughs with your family or friends at least once or twice each month. The openness and trust you share with the important people in your life can help give you the perspective you need to cope with everyday challenges. These regular connections will also have a positive impact on your health, especially when you share a good laugh. Laughing lowers blood pressure, reduces stress hormones, and releases endorphins that can ease pain.

Also, don’t neglect relationships at work. Colleagues and coworkers can provide valuable support and keep your blood pressure under control during stressful situations.

Feeling satisfied and fulfilled with your life is an essential part of your emotional and physical well-being. As you grow to appreciate your time, independence, self-assurance, skills, and relationships, you will be amazed at just how good you feel, both in body and in spirit.
