LOW VOLTAGE/HIGH VOLTAGE

• Low-voltage is 12/24 volts direct current (VDC) and can run as high as 42 VDC.• Does not cause serious injury or death. • High-voltage system is 60 or higher VDC or 30 or higher volts alternating current (VAC). • Electric-drive commercial vehicle includes a high voltage system operating anywhere

between 300 and 800 VAC.• High-voltage (VDC or VAC) can result in serious injury or death (i.e., electrocution).

Page 36: Cvsa 2016 out of service criteria

PRECAUTIONS• Do not poke fingers, screwdrivers or other tools into any holes, cracks, crevices, or openings in compartments marked

“High Voltage” or labeled with a yellow triangle bearing a black thunderbolt.

• Do not touch any liquid that may be exuding from a battery

• Do not smoke, use any heat-generating, igniters, or sparking devices near a battery because the electrolyte in the battery may be a flammable liquid.

• Do not inspect a vehicle that has a “High-voltage fault” or “Stop hybrid” or “Stop System” red light illuminated on the dashboard that could indicate loss of electrical isolation in the high voltage system.

CVSA Bulletin

2015-05 Advanced 6 X 2 Tractor Inspections Typical Tractor is a 6X4 system Means there are 2 drive axles

Page 45: Cvsa 2016 out of service criteria

P bar Y Safety Consultants

2015-05 Advanced 6 X 2 Tractor Inspections

6x2 only has 2 drive wheels (one drive axle) The second axle provides no traction Typically in the rearmost position

Page 46: Cvsa 2016 out of service criteria

P bar Y Safety Consultants

2015-05 Advanced 6 X 2 Tractor Inspections

Older styles of 6x2 tractors (two axle groups) were a lift axle with a spring assembly

Technology now allows for the system to automatically transfer load onto the drive axle in low traction events.

Benefits Tractor weighs 300 – 400 lbs less Provides better fuel efficiency by 2 – 6%

Page 47: Cvsa 2016 out of service criteria

P bar Y Safety Consultants

2015-05 Advanced 6 X 2 Tractor Inspections

2 Different Types – Type 1 Capable of transferring load from the non-drive

axle to the drive axle during a traction event Controls and changes air pressure in the air

suspension system putting more load on the drive axle and increasing traction.

This temporary load transfer is brief and will automatically return to even load distribution after the traction event.

Page 48: Cvsa 2016 out of service criteria

P bar Y Safety Consultants

Type 2 Primarily on Volvo and Mack Tractors System adjusts the load to optimize traction at all

times, not just during a traction event Laden, both axles will carry the same load. Unladen, the system will put most of the load on the

drive axle. The more load that is placed on the vehicle, the more air pressure will go into the non-drive axle

Unladen, non-drive axles appear to be deflated with only 3 – 5 psi of pressure in the air system

Page 49: Cvsa 2016 out of service criteria

P bar Y Safety Consultants

Guidance Type 1 does not require any special consideration

during inspection Type 2, when unladen will only have 3 – 5 psi in the

suspension bags (just enough to prevent buckling) May appear deflated Do not list a violation or place the vehicle OOS if

the vehicle is unladen If the vehicle is laden follow regular inspection

procedures.

Page 50: Cvsa 2016 out of service criteria

Page 51: Cvsa 2016 out of service criteria

P bar Y Safety Consultants

2015-03 Deflated Air Suspension

• Air ride suspension systems• Some components may not leave adequate space

when the system deflates• Automatic or Manual “dump” suspension systems• Some suspensions are equipped with a ride height lock• Some suspensions will dump automatically as high as

80psi

Page 52: Cvsa 2016 out of service criteria

P bar Y Safety Consultants

2015-03 Deflated Air Suspension

1. Identify the system and if there is sufficient residual space2. If there is not enough space under the vehicle with the air

suspension deflated, request the driver to deplete the air from the suspension by activating the suspension air dump valve if the vehicle is so equipped.

3. If there is enough clearance, continue the inspection4. If it is possible to deplete the air in the suspension without

affecting the brake system, the officer may do the under-vehicle portion of the inspection with a deflated air suspension.

5. If conducting the under-vehicle part of the inspection is not safe, limit the vehicle inspection to a Level II.

2015-02 Lift Axle Inspection

Safety Procedures with Lift Axles Axles can be automatically or manually activated Space can be an issue when the lift is lowered Different ways of lowering the lift

Manually activated by the driver (either a switch or an air valve) Driver turning the key to the “ON” position (automated and

governed by weight or vehicle reverse movement) Fully automated (requires constant electricity and is governed

by weight) Driver releasing the parking brakes.

• Do not inspect under a lift axle with the lift suspended.

Operational Policy 5 - *EDIT*4. Applicable Forms

•A Driver-Vehicle Examination Report is to be used to report the results of driver,

vehicle, and cargo examinations. It is to be prepared even though no defects are

discovered and a copy given to the driver regardless of whether or not the driver

consents to sign the form.

• A vehicle out-of-service sticker shall be affixed to a vehicle that has been declared

out-of-service as per jurisdictional regulations.

Page 56: Cvsa 2016 out of service criteria
