MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

In our first newsletter for 2007, may I wish you all ahappy and prosperous New Year! We congratulate ourvice-chair, Rattan Tawney, who was elected to fellowgrade last year. The executive committee is grateful toall our members who volunteered their time and effortto bring about our programs in the past year or other-wise supported these programs by their participationand attendance. We are hopeful for your continued sup-port this year. We welcome your feedback on these pro-grams; advise on our plans, and suggestions on andactive involvement in our future activities. Our goalremains to return significant value, at the local level, forour membership.

Two February EventsFeatured in this newsletter are two events for February2007. We are pleased to announce that our popularEmbassy Dinner Meeting for this program year wouldbe at the Venezuelan Embassy on the 15th of the Month.Venezuela, which has been in the news lately, is a coun-try of rich and deep cultural heritage that has extensivetrade and technical relationships with the US, butintriguing personal or political relations at the highestlevels. We expect a large turn out as usual so do notdelay in securing your reservation for this meeting!Our other program for February is equally exciting: adisplay by our section at the National Building Museumin Washington, DC, on Family Day - Saturday, Febru-ary 17, 2007 - as part of the Engineers Week celebra-tions. We hope you have planned to visit the museumwith your family and partake of the many activities on

Balance of Program YearOur plan for the balance of the program yearincludes support of regional science and engi-neering fairs in the Metropolitan WashingtonDC Area during the March - May period (wewelcome volunteers who would serve as ourspecial awards judges); our annual ASMEWashington Fellows dinner meeting; a StudentAwards dinner meeting at which some of thescience fair winners, our sponsors, and recipi-ents of our Washington DC Section ASMEScholarships would be recognized (more indus-try and other sponsors are sought for theseawards and the dinner); and a family-orientedevent. We especially want this last activity to bespouse and family friendly and entertaining, andwelcome your suggestions. Indeed I would liketo set up a special committee to plan and realizethis event and urge any of our interested mem-bers out there to get in touch with me. We con-tinue to review and explore opportunities for aprofessional development event. Please keep thesuggestions and ideas coming.

ASME is looking for bright, energetic Early Career Engineers inter-ested in volunteering their time for the engineering profession.Selected applicants will be funded* to attend the Leadership Train-ing Conference from March 2-4, 2007 at the Wyndham GreenspointHotel in Houston, Texas.

At the conference, gain insight into ASME‘s organization, activities,and resources, learn what it takes to lead or start an ASME unit, andnetwork with more than 150 other ASME leaders.
