WHAT’S INSIDE:
CWF youth selling cards as fundraiser
In June, 30 Fremont County 4-Hers and five adult chaperones will be travel-
ing to the nation's capital to participate in Citizenship Washington Focus
(CWF), a week-long civic engagement program.
Fremont County boasts one of the most active participations in the CWF
program in the state of Iowa. New delegates travel every three years, spending
a week at the National 4-H Center in Chevy Chase, MD.
The trip is paid for primarily through the annual Cherry Pie Auction,
held each year at the Fremont County Fair. In 2014, pies brought between
$200 to $500 each.
"The Cherry Pie Action is a huge money-maker for the CWF trip and consist-
ently brings in $15-$20,000 each year. We are thrilled with the community's
support and know that bidders believe in the value of the CWF trip," said Man-
dy Maher, this year's CWF Coordinator.
"However, with flight tickets nearly doubling since the 2012 trip, we're
wanting to provide a little more cushion," continued Maher. Continued on page 5

Volunteers give back to GSF and 4-H The Fremont County Extension Office recently received two donations from
adults in the community. All donations were divided between Growing Strong
Families, Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF) and 4-H programming.
Deb Webb, a friend of Susan Harris, has continued to volunteer her time
during fair, overnights and other events. Her employer in Des Moines has a
volunteer giving back program which gives funds to a program of the employ-
ee’s choice for the hours they have helped.
Deb’s contribution this fall was $1,500. Thanks Deb!
Another similar volunteer donation of $969 from Cargill Meat Solutions in
Nebraska City was received from Sergio Contrares Pina and Scott Lowthorp. Continued on page 3

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS K-3 GRADERS
Clover Kids club population growing by leaps and bounds Huge growth has been seen this 4-H year with the Clover
Kids enrollments. As of publication, there are more than 35
youth in just the Clover Kids program.
Started last year with three Clover Kids clubs, a fourth has
been added this year in the Riverside Rockets club.
Leaders for the clubs include Jamie Catlett with Silver Sky-
larks, StarAnn Kloberdanz with W.M.P., Carie Nelson with
Washington P.E.P. and Lindsey Carter with Riverside Rockets.
Clover Kids is a junior 4-H program designed for youth in
grades Kindergarten through 3rd grade. Normally, the clubs
meet at the same time and
location as the regular club.
A lot of the membership is
younger siblings of youth
enrolled in the regular 4-H
program.
As many of them tag along as their family participates in 4-
H, Clover Kids gives them a way to become involved and logi-
cally following into the regular 4-H program when they enter
4th grade.
There is no competition in the Clover Kids program. All
exhibits are treated the same.
New to the county fair for 2015 will be a premium award
for non-livestock entries. The Fair Board has agreed to let
each Clover Kids exhibit be worth $1 in premium money.
Clover Kids can show livestock at the county fair, but are
not allowed to show large animals such as swine, horses and
cattle. All other animals must be less than 200 pounds.
They will follow all other 4-H rules as outlined in the fair
book and must meet deadlines established by the Extension
Office for registration, animal ID and fair entry.
In non-livestock areas, Clover Kids can bring exhibits under
the categories of animals, creative arts, ag and natural re-
sources, family and consumer science, personal development,
STEM and other.
Please be watching for more information about Clover Kids
fair entries and rules. Details will be in the fairbook and in
upcoming newsletters.
Clover Kids are not eligible for state fair. Because of their
age, Clover Kids cannot be in shooting sports until 4th grade.
This year, Clover Kids were added to the 4-H Online system
so leaders can easily keep track of membership.

Sergio’s contribution specifically went to Growing Strong Families, the parent education and child devel-opment program that Heidi Lowthorp facilitates. Scott’s contribution went to CWF and other 4-H programming. Cargill Meat Solutions uses the United Way of Ne-braska to help deliver funds to programs of the em-ployee’s choice. Thanks Sergio and Scott! We appreciate the gift! Please check with the companies you or your par-ents work for. Maybe they have volunteer programs that could benefit 4-H! We have so many great volunteers, maybe this could be one more way to give back.

Tri-Valley Bank to “open the gate” for livestock projects
BABYSITTER CLASS TO BE DEC. 13
YOUTH AGRICULTURAL BUSINESS LEADERS SOUGHT
Tri-Valley Bank in Randolph has created a youth
“Open the Gate” to livestock management and loan
project.
The intent is to increase the number of youth will-
ing and able to be agricultural business leaders in
Southwest Iowa.
The program will offer a youth based program
that provides one-on-one financial guidance with the
basics of livestock record keeping, projecting and
tracking cash flow, and how to create a balance
sheet.
Youth ages 9-19 who are involved with 4-H or
FFA livestock projects are preferred. Your project
does not have to exhibit at the county fair.
Youth who are not enrolled in the project, but
want to learn more are encouraged to call. Educa-
tional experiences can be arranged.
Each youth is encouraged to schedule an ap-
pointment at
the bank be-
tween normal
business hours.
The pro-
gram began
Nov. 1. For more information, please call Amanda
Moore, vice president and loan officer at the bank,
at 712-625-2201, or email her at amoore@tri-

in a fundraiser called "Shop With

cards from delegates at face value.
Fremont County Extension buys
them from Great Lakes Scrip Cen-
ter at a reduced price and keeps
the difference. The customer gets a
gift card that they can give away, or
spend like cash, worth the same
amount as they paid.
Gift cards are available from
hundreds of retailers. The
amount raised by the CWF dele-
gates varies based on negotiations
with the retailer. For example,
Walmart gives a rebate of 2.5%,
but Restaurant.com offers 50%!
Gift cards will be distributed to
buyers about a week before Christ-

Junior Cattle Feeder Program
The JCF program falls under the Division 1 Market Beef in the Fremont County Fair book.
Within Class 7, there will be two categories: 6-8th grade and 9-12th grade.
This program is intended to provide the member with realistic experiences in commercial beef
cattle production. The opportunities for the member include:
Gain knowledge of healthy production practices.
Understand and use appropriate care and handling of livestock.
Implement quality assurance in overall feed management.
Use record keeping to learn and make decisions relating to animal and busi-
ness performance (i.e. economy of investment and return).
Evaluation criteria will be based on:
Disease and Parasite control, drug use, bio-security
General animal care – feed, water and environment
Ingredients, ration, mixing/manufacturing feed
Monthly records, purchase and sale of animals, costs and rate of gain
Cattle within this program can be at a minimum of 3 head to a maximum of 10 head.
The pen should be separate from other livestock so accurate feed records, etc. can be maintained.
The cattle can be weighed and started as a project between Dec. 1 and Jan. 31.
Deadline to enroll in the project is Friday, Jan. 30, 2015 by 4:30 p.m. at the Extension Office
The cattle need to be tagged with a 4-H ear tag. Fremont County’s beef weigh-in is Dec. 29 from 1-3
p.m. at the Fremont County Vet Clinic in Sidney.
Records for this project will include a monthly record sheet and a
final completion record to be included as supporting materials
with the final poster project at Fair.
Other material you might want to use
include: description of feeding program and
health maintenance, scale tickets and pic-
tures.
All records, including average daily gain, will use the date of December weigh
in to the date of sale. Must be approximately 6 months.
The judge comes to your operation prior to fair to evaluate your project. A
poster board presentation is required at the county fair in July.
Contact the office to register or ask questions 374-2351.
