What is Cyberbullying?

• The use of information and communication involving electronic technologies to facilitate deliberate and repeated harassment or threat to an individual or group.

• Being cruel to others by sending or posting harmful material using technology means:– Power– Control– Human Relationships

Prevalence of CyberbullyingPatchin and Hinduja (2005) studied 1400 Internet-using adolescents’

experiences with online bullying found that

• 34% of respondents say they have been bullied online

• 13% were threatened• 5% were scared for their

chatroom• 49% were bullied using

computer text message (IM)• 28% were bullied by email• 34% felt frustrated

Penalties

• If convicted, even if a juvenile, the guilty person must register as a sex offender. This could remain on the person’s record for life, or a limited time, held to the discretion of the judge.

• Harmful – Misdemeanor of the 1st degree• Obscene – Felony of the 5th degree• Under 13 years of age – Felony of the 4th degree
