The survey process is quite time-intensive for staff, the Board and committees and we felt it a better use of time to work to address existing issues (potential new clubhouse, equity membership structure, food service) rather than conduct the annual survey. Here it is the end of summer… we start the season with tennis, football and USTA! And if we are lucky enough, sunshine! Our Central Park USTA season starts Friday, September 8. We have 8 teams playing in the Mixed 18+ league and 10 teams playing in the Adult 55 league. We also have two teams for Junior Team tennis starting in Oc-tober. Janet Isaacson and Yogesh Nath will help organize a U14 team and a U12 team. We also have Women’s Team Tennis starting Wednesday, September 6 and Cup season beginning Monday, September 11. The junior program will begin Tuesday, September 5. Dea and Blakeley will be holding a Stars Par-ent meeting on Tuesday, September 12 at 7 pm in the Board room. This meeting will help set the goals and expectations for the upcoming year. Come with questions - and if you cannot attend, reach out to Dea with those questions anytime. [email protected] Laurie has been gathering input from the Membership Committee, and following the sweet success of a nice evening with guitar music, food and libations for our End of Summer Party on the Patio event, we are pleased to combine a Mix Up Friday night with a Wine Tasting event on Friday, Sep-tember 22. Please see page 2 for more details, this is one you are not going to want to miss! We will have some new faces at the front desk with Amanda and Nicholas heading off to college. Please help me welcome Becca and our very own Anne Glenny to the front desk staff of Central Park. These fresh new faces will greet you at the front desk, so please make sure to check in and give them your name – in a few weeks they should know who you are, but there are a lot of you, so please be patient. If you are the organizer of large group, getting the names ahead of time always helps. This is especially helpful with the USTA matches. (And it also reduces the likelihood of a no-show letter or fine for you.) With Kerry Levine at the helm, and the marching orders for discovering food service needs – we are excited to send out a quick survey to get your feedback. As you know – we can only do our best to make a majority of you happy, so please help us determine what those needs are when it comes to food and beverage and we can start to put our plan in place for the Fall. And last but not least… a few friendly reminders to get us back in full swing: Check your bags and your cars for those towels you may have accidentally taken home. No ques-tions asked – we appreciate the return! For USTA tennis and Cup tennis remind your team that warm-up courts for your home matches are

to be walk-on only – and if you will be arriving late, you must notify the front desk, they are able to

hold the court for you for 30 minutes. If your team will be late, remember to not disrupt the adjacent

courts already in play. If you reserve a court and play in a match, this is still considered playing on

two reserved courts…unless the match is at 8:30 pm. The same rules apply for overflow courts

when it comes to USTA play!

Here’s to a great rest of the year with lots of tennis!

COMMITTEE REPORTS

4

CUPS | CHAIR LYNDA CARLSON

TENNIS | CHAIR NANCY GOLDBERG

FACILITIES | CHAIR BRIAN DARROW

MEMBERSHIP | CHAIR CAROL BUCKINGHAM

Interested in joining the Facilities Committee? Here are the key things they do:

Develop and maintain an Asset Maintenance and Replacement schedule allowing the Club Manage-ment to plan for and determine both short and long term facility needs.

Provide regular input to the Board and Club Management regarding facility improvements, replace-ment and maintenance.

Be available to Club Management and members as it relates to facility issues and bring these issues to the Board as necessary.

It has been a beautiful and fun summer!! Hopefully you have been able to enjoy some of our club ac-tivities as a part of your summer festivities. After our tennis events last month we put a bookend on summer with a Happy Hour on the patio with live music by Kyle Schaeffer the last weekend in Au-gust. There is a school supply drive to help provide materials for homeless students going on through Sept. 20

th. See the information in the lobby if you are interested in participating. And look for more in-

formation to come on a wonderful club wine dinner coming up on September 22.

If you would like to be a part of the group that makes these and other great things happen, please join us! Our next meeting is Monday, September 18

th at 5:30 pm.

FINANCE | CHAIR ROSS LAURSEN

Cups season is starting the week of 9/11. We have 10 teams this year and will be having the kick off Captains meeting on Wednesday 9/6 at 1:00pm. The Cups Committee will have their first meeting on Monday 9/11. We are looking forward to another season of fun and competitive tennis.

Reminder to check in for your court at the front desk - even if you are taking a lesson. Why?

Front desk can learn your name/face.

You won’t be a “No-Show” (and possibly fined).

The other players on your court will know where to find you (especially if the court isn’t in your name).

Staff can find you in an emergency.

Provides better security - so “strangers” aren’t milling around unaccompanied.

The 2017 - 2018 Tennis Committee will have our first meeting on Monday, September 11.

The Finance Committee did not meet in August, and will resume its monthly meetings and activities in September. The financial position of the club is strong, with over $300,000 in the bank and an additional close to $100,000 in receivables, through mid-year. I’d like to use this report to thank Marty McCurry for his years of service as the Finance Committee chair. I don’t know how many years it’s been, but the numbers I’ve heard are more than a few. Thanks for your faithful service Marty!

PRO’S COURT

MEN’S AND WOMEN’S DOUBLES

Mastering the Three Areas of the Court

Regardless of your playing style, it’s important to continually work on the backcourt,

midcourt, and the frontcourt. To master doubles, spend time on all 5 parts of emphasis

for each of the 3 areas. Remember to always practice, play and hit with a purpose!

* In Mixed Doubles there tends to be a spread of abilities, powers, and styles on the

court. It also tends to be a challenge to find a rhythm. Therefore a few modifications to

the list below would be needed in all three areas of the court to apply to mixed.

BACKCOURT:

1. Your Purpose and Responsibilities:

Be the assist, the helper; you’re hired to set up the point. Be consistent, accurate, firm, and in rhythm. Set up and protect your partner. Aim primarily crosscourt, low and deep into the singles court. Keep the other net player at bay and be in their heads more than they are in your head.

2. Your Mindset and Personality:

Your serve and return percentage are huge for your team’s success, take good care of them!

Get ready to hit lots of groundstrokes with a purpose, be durable and recover.

Be ready to cover lots of the court and back up your partner.

Set up to hit your strongest shot to increase your aggression in opportune moments.

Be ready to jump in and join the offense when your partner attacks or your opponent retreats.

3. Your Technique:

Use your full foundation; full unit turn, track and move, load, and time the contact of each hit.

Use a condensed backswing with a smaller loop than in singles to stay on beat and play well each hit.

Your recovery time must be quick as the job is up tempo, so enter each shot to exit successfully.

Learn a drive crosscourt, a drive down the line, a lob, and a short crosscourt (flat, shape, spin).

4. Your Movement:

Load and choose your stance (usually semi open and open) based on direction of movement.

Footwork is key; split step to first step to adjusting steps to loading to releasing to recovery steps.

5. Your Preferred Strike Zone:

Waist level for groundstrokes; this connects your center of gravity firmly with the ground for leverage.

MIDCOURT:

1. Your Purpose and Responsibilities:

To advance the attack but to still be the assist, stay composed and use controlled aggression.

To keep the ball low and penetrating, primarily crosscourt.

To keep moving as you hit and to move through the midcourt.

To be on high alert, and ready to make a quick decision as you read the ball and the situation.

The midfielder supports the offense or defense, so know why you are in the midcourt.

2. Your Mindset and Personality:

The best midcourt players are calm, disciplined, and open-minded (volley/half volley/approach).

The movement is smooth and committed, the balance of the split step is low (most will be low balls).

The most unknown is in the midcourt so the eyes must process quickly to execute the plan.

If going forward then help the attack, if going backward then help to regain the point.

3. Your Technique:

In the ready position use a continental grip, stay low, wide base, elbows in front.

Work on low volleys, half volleys, and approach shots- all are mobile shots.

5

Page 6: Cybergolf - C e n t r a l P ar k - T h e Te n n i s P l a y er s C l u b …cdn.cybergolf.com/images/1085/Sept-news.pdf · 2017. 9. 1. · of a nice evening with guitar music, food

PRO’S COURT

6

Use a 3/4 unit turn and drive your power through your loading foot to your transfer foot.

4. Your Movement:

Have a calm lower split step and maintain your balance to cut in any direction.

Move through the hit to create power & gain position. Be committed but smooth to absorb & control the ball.

On jammers use the carioca step to make space and then continue your attack.

5. Your Preferred Strike Zone:

Above the net but below your shoulders unless it’s an overhead.

FRONTCOURT:

1. Your Purpose and Responsibilities:

You are the scorer, you are the hunter. Go look for work continually.

Be noticed and active and ready to battle at all times.

To back off and help cover the middle when the point breaks down.

2. Your Mindset and Personality:

Be brave, quick, and agile.

Be alert, engaged, and committed to get involved whenever your partner is protecting you.

Let the height of the ball lead your decisions to hit; forehand (high and medium), backhand (medium).

Be relentless in your mission. After your poach come back to attack again and again until you score.

3. Your Technique:

Have relaxed, quick hands; elbows in front with your hands between you and the net in your fast spot.

Have alert eyes and ears; “listen” (gauge what’s going on behind you) and “look” (eyes forward).

Use foundation; turn and align, move, then cross step, push with feet and pull with hands to recover.

Move through the volley with balance when poaching, complete the switch, come back looking to hit.

4. Your Movement:

Be taller, lighter, & agile in your split step. Your quickness & maintaining balance are key to success.

Use angular movement (move at angles both in and out).

Be able to dodge jammers then still attack.

Increase your range of coverage in the match. (change your positioning and work on your reads).

5. Your Preferred Strike Zone:

Above the net or higher but within your power zone.

Take an area and get started. Little by little you will master this amazing game! - Lisa Moldrem
