We are delighted to be returning to the Capital this year, as well as to Stoke-on-Trent.

Last year’s participants loved the ride in and around the Potteries, which takes partici-

pants on a dramatic route through the Staffordshire countryside - even the tough hills.

We have added an additional route this year in the scenic South West which has proved

really popular. For the hardcore cyclist it is one beast of a ride!

A host of celebrity faces, including Olympic gold medallist Daley Thompson, actor Ben

Richards and comedian David Schneider will be taking part in one of the rides as will a

number of pro cycling teams, including Rapha Condor Sharp and Horizon Fitness. So,

you never know who you might be cycling next to!

All the best to everyone who has signed up. I will be there myself at the start-line in

London and look forward to seeing you. I hope you find this guide useful. It is designed

to give you everything you need to know about the events, from getting there to

feeding stations. Thank you for riding for The Prostate Cancer Charity.

John Neate

Chief Executive, The Prostate Cancer Charity

Welcome to your The Prostate Cancer Charity Tour Ride.

Everyone who has signed up to one of The

Prostate Cancer Charity Tour Rides, whatever

their chosen distance, has committed to a

personal challenge.

Whether you are a dedicated lycra lover

determined to go the full distance, getting

into the saddle to take on the challenge

distance or a family looking for a leisurely

ride, all participants will not only be

competing against themselves, but supporting

The Prostate Cancer Charity in its drive to raise

awareness of the disease.

Of course, there is another element to this impressive feat - raising funds. Every pound

generated with every pedal, uphill or over the finishing line, will help us generate vital

funds which will enable the Charity to fund research, provide support and information

and run campaigns.

The Charity launched its successful partnership with The Tour of Britain two years ago,

and with it, its ‘Unite ByCycling’ initiative, designed to bring people together on two

wheels to support our drive to improve the experience of the 36,000 men diagnosed

with prostate cancer every year in the UK.

What better way to do this than by hitting the same route the professionals will tackle

in one of the stages of The Tour of Britain?

Don’t just watch it, ride it!

In 2007 the South West hosted the Tour of Britain professional cycle race for the first

time, 3 years down the road the region has become synonymous with tough racing

stages, beautiful scenery, dramatic open moorland, long climbs, intricate coastal villages

and fanatical road side support offering both the riders and race spectators the real

excitement of the sport.

Stage 4 of the 2010 Tour of Britain has been selected to give seasoned riders, leisure

cyclists and families the opportunity to preview the race route and the fantastic scenery

of Somerset and Devon whilst sharing the sense of achievement experienced by riders on

this year’s Tour of Britain.

The Tour Ride, an association between The Tour of Britain and The Prostate Cancer

Charity, provides a unique opportunity to experience the exact start, route and finish of

the race whilst helping the Charity.

The Pro, Challenge and Family Tour Rides have been designed to create a memorable

day out for the whole family.

A week later on Tuesday 14 September 2010 you can catch the action on the roadside or

on ITV4 as the professionals compete to win The Tour of Britain.

The Tour Ride offers everyone a chance to experience the official Tour of Britain.

Stage 4 of the Tour of Britain from Minehead to Teignmouth at 175km is a long day in the saddle for pro’s and a testing course for the Tour Ride sportive on Sunday 5 September.

West Somerset Railway Station nestles in the centre of Minehead, just a short pebble throw from the beach. The bustling activity of the restored steam railway creates a special atmosphere for riders preparing to set off to ride from coast to coast, a first for a Tour of Britain stage. With the delightful sea air and quintessential English seaside town filling the senses the surrounding hills that drop to the coast are reassuring reminders that panoramic views and some rewarding cycling are just around the corner. Rolling out through the streets of Minehead, the historically renowned village of Dunster soon follows setting the tone for the sheer beauty of the towns and villages along the entire route. Passing through Somerset early in the day riders will face the heights of Exmoor twice from sea level before heading towards pretty Somerset village of Wiveliscombe for some welcome refreshments. These two climbs are King of the Mountain climbs in The Tour of Britain and come very early in the stage.

At the halfway mark the stiff climb out of Somerset over the Blackdown Hills brings Devon in to the riders’ sights with a wonderful descent in to Honiton for a quick lunch stop. With the big hills behind the riders it’s now the turn of the short tough climbs to test the resolve of those legs throughout the closing kilometres of the stage. Peak Hill, literally rising straight out of Sidmouth, requires respect from even the fittest riders with 130km in the saddle. Once breached refuelling in Otterton will revive the weary for the final 40 kilometre spin to Teignmouth and perhaps a well deserved paddle in the sea.

The Tour of Britain route passes through the heart of Honiton and consequently on Sunday 5 September this busy market town provides the ideal base for riders setting out on the 70km Challenge Tour Ride which finishes on the sea front in Teignmouth.

Departing from Honiton the ride climbs gradually up through the Devon countryside to commanding views before descending for 10km to the stunning beaches of the Jurassic coast and the historic charm of Sidmouth.

Peak Hill, literally rising straight out of Sidmouth, requires respect from even the fittest riders with 22km in the saddle and 48km to go. Once breached and taking in the views of the rest of the route a refreshing descent and refuelling in Otterton will revive the weary for the final undulating pedal to Teignmouth and perhaps a well deserved paddle in the sea.

Event SitesThe Prostate Cancer Charity Tour Ride is grateful for the permission to use each of the event sites for the charity ride and we would like to thank everyone for their kind support.

Toilets, refreshments, bicycle parking and baggage drop facilities are provided at these locations for all participants, friends and family. Please note that bicycles are left at the owner’s risk at the bicycle parking areas at each of the venues.

Unfortunately there are no showering facilities available at the actual finish of the ride in Teignmouth but the local sports centre in Teignmouth at Broadmeadow can provide showers for a nominal fee.

Bag DropIncluded in your rider pack is a baggage label with your ride number on so you can leave your kit bag with us and collect it in Teignmouth after you have completed your ride. It may be wise to bring some spare warm clothing as you can cool off quickly after exercise.

We suggest that you do not leave valuables or mobile phones in these bags. You will need to show your rider number from your handlebars in order to retrieve your bag.

Transfer Service – Pre-booking requiredAs this is a one-way cycle ride we are offering a transfer service back to Minehead or Honiton for riders on the Pro and Challenge Tour Rides.

This service needs to be booked by Wednesday 1 September on www.tourride.co.uk.

There are several options available so please select carefully. We will be using 50 seater coaches for the transfers to both Minehead or Honiton. Where bicycles are transported this will be done in an enclosed lorry. Cardboard padding will be used by the carrier to protect each bicycle but unfortunately we are unable to accept responsibility for any damage, we would suggest having some protective foam tubing and cable ties in your kit bag (this bag is transferred for you from start to finish) so this can be placed on your bicycle before you give it to the carrier to provide extra protection.
