THE TOUR– TRACK G PRIX

On Saturday 24th November, Cycling WA hosted the inaugural 2012 Cycling WA Awards Luncheon at Tompkins on Swan. This event was the first of its kind in over ten years and saw an excel-lent turnout of almost 100 people with many positive comments, which bodes well for future events. The awards ceremony was a fantastic opportunity to recognise our athlete’s achievements throughout the year. Those in attendance and amongst our awards winners included WA’s own Olympic cyclist, Melissa Hoskins who has achieved some outstanding results, nationally and internationally in 2012 and has seen herself become one of Australia’s top female cy-clists. Other top athletes in attendance included South Australian and two time World Champion Rohan Dennis and Genesys NRS gun Anthony Giacoppo, who took out four of the 2012 National Road Series Titles. It has been an outstanding year of cycling for all our WA athletes, with our award winners and place getters, showing just how strong the competition is at a state, national and international level. The results that have been achieved over the year by our athletes, indicates that cycling in WA is getting stronger and with more upcoming young talent on display, the future for WA cy-cling is looking very bright. The ceremony kicked off with a presentation to our newly ap-

pointed Life Members, Stan Fennell and Tony Van Merwyk from Peel Districts CC. Both of these men have contributed significant-ly to the sport over the years and thoroughly deserve their life membership status. The life member presentations, were then followed by the Road Rider of the Year Awards. These awards were based upon the re-sults from recognized races throughout the course of the year on an accumulated points basis. Congratulations to all the following Road Rider of the Year winners: Male Road Rider of the Year – Brad Hall John & Betty Smith Female Road Rider of Year – Leonie Burford U19 Male Road Rider of the Year – Bradley Linfield U19 Female Road Rider of the Year – Elissa Wundersitz Junior U17 Boys Road Rider of the Year – Sam Welsford Junior U17 Girls Road Rider of the Year – Shannon Sherwin Junior U15 Boys Road Rider of the Year – Connor Lambert Junior U15 Girls Road Rider of the Year – Niken Jefferies Masters Male Road Rider of the Year – Jon Gregg Masters Female Road Rider of the Year – Lorraine Schutz Full results for the Road Rider of the Year Series can be seen here.

Welcome to the December edition of Omnium, which follows what has been the busiest few months I can remember at Cycling WA! None of us can quite believe Christmas is just around the corner as this last quar-ter has flown by, and we, like you, are all looking forward to a brief rest before what promises to be an equally full first quarter of 2013 be-gins! We’ve tried to capture most of

the highlights of the past few months in this edition of Omnium and I hope you enjoy the read. This time of year often prompts reflection and evaluation of the year that has passed. As I look back on 2012, I see it as another year of progress be-ing made in the development of the sport. The team at Cycling WA have strived to improve our service and support to our clubs and members, we’ve welcomed new clubs into the WACF community, our events calen-dar has been the fullest it has been for several years, membership has had another impressive period of growth, our revenues have increased and di-versified, and as an organisation we have made progress in all areas of the business. The recent addition of Hannah Franklin to the team at Cycling WA will increase our capacity to further develop the sport in WA. Much of this progress has been due to the terrific support we receive from our clubs and the hard working band of volunteers that give their time to de-velop the sport, to whom we owe a huge debt of gratitude. Over the past few months we’ve had several significant events that are worth mentioning. The WACF AGM took place in October, where the Fed-eration inducted two new Life Members, in the shape of Peel Districts Cy-cling Clubs Tony van Merwyk and Stan Fennell, and the election of Lachlan McCrea to the WACF Board.

Several state, national and international events have occurred since our last edition of Omnium, on road and track, all of which are highlighted in the coming pages. We’ve also had the inaugural Cycling WA Road Rider and Sports Star of the Year Awards, held at Tompkins on Swan, which saw Jarrod Karel, Brad Hall, double world junior champion Kelsey Robson and Olympian Mel Hoskins take out the major ‘gongs’ in front of a packed house. The Be Active Cycle Instead Bike Skills Program continues to go from strength to strength, with almost 2,000 participants having gone through our programs over the past 18 months. Supported by our major partner Healthway, and the RAC, the program has been a runaway success, and has resulted in the establishment of many important relationships includ-ing the Departments of Transport, Education, SDERA and the Active After Schools Communities Program. 2013 is already shaping up to be another milestone year, with the first na-tional championships for many years being held in WA, the Tour de Perth being the inaugural event on the 2013 Subaru National Road Series calen-dar and the UCWT Masters event all occurring in April! In summary, much has been achieved in 2012 and 2013 will I am sure bring with it some more exciting challenges. In closing I would like to thank all our members, clubs and the hundreds of volunteers that give their time so tirelessly to make our sport what it is, you do an amazing job! Finally to my team at the office, congratulations and thank you for all the hard work and support over the past year, your energy, enthusiasm and professionalism is hugely appreciated!

On behalf of the WACF Board and all of us at Cycling WA, have a fan-tastic Christmas and a healthy and prosperous 2013. Best wishes, Garry Chandler, Cycling WA CEO

TETE DE LA COURSE—KELSEY ROBSON

Kelsey Robson, Cycling WA International Junior Sport Star has had a fantastic year. Coming home from the 2012 UCI Junior Track World Championships in Invercargill, New Zealand with a Gold in the Women's Individual Pursuit and Gold for Women's Team Pursuit - with Georgia Baker, Taylah Jennings and Kelsey Robson. Also 1st U19 National Individual Pursuit and 2nd U19 National Team Pursuit. Tony Lendrum caught up with her for a photo shoot and had a few questions for her.

Who are your Coaches? Darryl Benson and Clay Worthington When did you first start cycling seriously? Was it a family in-terest? I started cycling seriously as a 2nd year U/15 on road and as a 1st year U/17 on track in 2010. My Dad started rid-ing to get fit, then both my brothers started up, then I decid-ed to get involved. My brother Brad was the first to start competing. At first I was not so keen to compete but then I had a go one day and haven’t looked back. Please tell us about the moment when you knew you had

won the women’s individual pursuit in 2:23.57 over Elinor Barker (GBR)? The moment I knew I'd won the pursuit was a great one... I felt a lot of happiness and relief that I had finally achieved my goal. I'd been train-ing 6 months for that event and I'm a first year Under 19 so nobody really expected me to actually win! But I knew with my times at nationals that I'd be very competitive. I felt very proud of myself and I felt like I proved to myself that I really can do this sport and I was not just chasing around empty dreams.

How competitive is the relationship with Allee Proud and the rest of the Australian Junior Worlds team? Allee Proud and myself aren't competitive with each other at all as she is a sprinter and I am an endurance rider... in fact we are great friends and great support for each other. There is some com-petitiveness between my fellow endurance Australian Junior Worlds team mates and we really push each other to achieve, however we each knew our individual strengths and came together as a strong team to win gold and set a new world record in the team pursuit.

What have been some of the highlights of your career so far? The highlights of my career so far would be winning the National U19 Individual Pursuit and the World Champi-onship U19 Individual Pursuit and also the World Champi-onship Team Pursuit. Any low points? Sometimes during training when I feel like I’m not improving. What are your short and longer term goals? My short term goals are to post good times at the Oceania Champi-onships and the National Championships and achieve se-lection in the Australian team as a second year. My longer term goals mainly revolve around defending my Individual

Pursuit title and this year I'd love to have a crack at the World Championship Pointscore race. Beyond that I would like to further develop my strength and skills going into senior ranks. What do you enjoy doing away from the bike? Any other sporting skills? I love riding horses…and also drawing them. Before cycling I was a squad member of the Arena Swim Club at Joondalup. Who is your sporting hero? Bradley Wiggins. What’s the best thing about being a world class touring athlete? And the worst? The best thing is getting to meet and become friends with other athletes around Austral-ia. So far I have only travelled overseas to New Zealand to compete as a cyclist but it was really exciting and I loved the scenery in New Zealand. The worst would be having to pack and unpack clothes and bikes all the time. What advice would you give to aspiring young rid-ers? Stay focused on your goals, work hard and listen and learn as much as you can from your coaches. Watch out for Kelsey at www.wa.cycling.org.au and www.cycling.org.au

I arrived in Canberra on Tuesday Sept 4th as part of the WA State Team plus a big number of other riders from WA. After settling into the hotel and getting our bikes set up we got ready for an ex-citing week. On Wednesday we woke up and it looked like it was a perfect day. At 9am we went down to the team truck so that the me-chanics could check our bikes. When we got out to Stromlo it was blowing a gale but still not a cloud in the sky. We warmed up on the crit circuit then rode part of the U15s road race course. After that we rode as a group back to Canberra. In the afternoon some of us went to Questacon and had a brilliant time. That night we had a team dinner with most of the riders from WA and had an awesome time!! On Thursday the groups went out and rode the time trial courses. The conditions were really windy and progressively getting worse. We warmed up on the Stromlo crit circuit then rode to our age group turn around. When we got back to the hotel some of the riders went down to the pool for some hot and cold recov-

ery. In the afternoon some of us went to the AIS for a tour. The tour was really fun, we played some interactive games and saw where the AIS athletes train. Friday was race day and what a miserable day it was. We woke up to wind and rain worse than a winter storm in Bunbury. The U15s started around 10-10:30am and the U17s started around 12 O’clock. We all posted good time trial times for the conditions. Even though it was tough conditions WA managed to grab some medals out of it. Jarrod Karel getting 2nd in the U15 boys race and Jemila Anderson getting 3rd in the U15 women’s race. The U17’s didn’t have the day they would have hoped for with the weather getting worse as the day went on. For the hilly course I averaged 38.8km/hour getting 9th place. Saturday was time for the road race and the conditions had gotten a little better. We headed out to the course at the same time so the U15s could see how the U17s take the start of the race in a bigger field. They had 70 starters. Early on in the U17 boys race Reece Tucknott and Jai Hindley made a break away

with a Queenslander. At the end of the 60km race the trio were just too strong for the main peloton to drag back and Jai from Midland Cycle Club won the three way sprint to become the Aus-tralian national champion with Reece in third place. In the two U15s races WA got two more medals from Jarrod and Jemila. Jemila had a fantastic win in the U15 girls and Jarrod got a 3rd in the bunch sprint. Sunday was the day of the crit and some very hard racing. The U17 boys were split into two heats and a final but the U15 boys was a straight out final. Most of the U17’s made it through to the final and worked really well for everyone to finish in the bunch with an average speed of 45.5 km/h for 34 minutes. In the U15 boys it was really hard race. In the last lap on the final bend there was a crash two places in front of me that made me lose some momentum and waste energy trying to get across to the break in front of the crash. In the end I got 20th place with an average speed of 41.5km/h. Jarrod Karel had another great finish in 2nd place. In the U15 girls

Niken Jeffries had a strong win with Jemila Anderson & Sarah Tucknott finishing very strong in the bunch. The U17 girls were in a strong field and raced well. On Sunday evening after some free time all the riders, helpers & supporters met for pizza & a good chat about the great week we all had. I would like to say thank you to Andrew Jackson who helped us prepare all week – the drivers & the mechanics as well as all the mums & dads that were there to support & feed us. I really enjoyed the experience & I have learned a lot. One big lesson I learnt is to let your coach know if you don't feel well. I got a cold and sore throat when we arrived and kept it to myself until they found out on Saturday after the road race. If you don't feel well you must let the coach know so they can change things to help you!! Cheers Connor Lambert

THE PELOTON—BE ACTIVE CYCLE INSTEAD BIKE SKILLS PROGRAM

In its first 18 months of running as an AustCycle Provider, Cycling WA has delivered to around 2000 participants in the WA community. The Be Active Cycle Instead Bike Skills Program (delivered using the AustCycle Framework) has gone from strength to strength. Cycling WA first started de-livery of the Be Active Cycle Instead Bike Skills Program in July 2011 and are thrilled with the support recieved from WA coaches, schools, local governments and community groups. "In its short life, the Be Active Cycle Instead Bike Skills Pro-gram has allowed us to engage with such a variety of differ-ent community members in WA. Our team of around 40 AustCycle Teachers have helped us to deliver bike skills ed-ucation to young children as well as run workplace health

and wellbeing programs, deliver training for Indigenous groups as well as reach the broader adult and elderly popu-lation through our learn to ride and Healthy Communities Initiative programs" said Claire South Development Manag-er at Cycling WA. The final program for 2012 will be an adults learn to ride program in the City of Wanneroo organised in support of the Australian Governments Healthy Communities Initia-ves. The program will commence on th the 15th December and will finish in the new year with the aim of helping adult women rediscover the joys of cycling and hopefully giving them lots of time to practice their skills over the Christmas break.

Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th November in Perth saw an-other smashing round of the Cycling Australia National Junior Track Series, with more than one hundred riders partici-pating in the two-day event at the SpeedDome. One of the key areas of difference between the first round in Sydney and the second in Perth was the improvement of the riders rac-ing skills. The series leaders, in their respective age groups, were al-ways going to perform well in Perth, however many lower ranked riders lifted to the occasion and stole the show. Jessi-

ca Saunders (Northern Inland) continues to dominate the JW15 division, but her major rival Natasha Mullany (Illawarra Academy) wasn't too far behind her. Saunders leads the JW15 division on 82 points, from Mullany on 55 points and Charlotte Thompson (Regional Victoria) on 16 points. In the JW17 division, the battle between Bridget Mullany (Illawarra Academy) and Danielle McKinnirey (Sturt Holdfast Marion CC) continued in fantastic spirit from round 1, with these women neck and neck all weekend. Courtney Field (Carnegie Caulfield CC) raced with class and is now in grasp of taking the lead in this division, however fourth ranked Ki-

ara Dundas (North Queensland) weaved some magic in Perth. She rode like a seasoned performer to be one of the highlights in the JW17 division along with Niken Jefferies (Northern District CC), who made her first appearance in the NJTS. Mullany will go into round 3 in Launceston holding a slender two point lead over McKinniery, who is on 50 points, with Field rounding out the top three NJTS JW17 rankings on 47 points. Despite being involved in a crash, Matthew Jackson (HCS Perth) dusted himself off after a fall in the points race to again control the JM17 division on 54 points. Continually im-

proving is Cameron Scott (Illawarra Academy) who again, stepped up his performances and sits in second position on the NJTS rankings behind Jackson with 36 points. Chris Bryan (NSW North Coast) and Jeone Park (Central Mix) were also solid contributors along with James Robinson (Launceston City CC) who are on 25, 22 and 16 points respectively.
