Branwell WardAn acute service, Branwell Ward can support up to 19 men in a therapeutic and calming setting. The service is an emergency admission ward that aims to work with people with a broad range of mental health problems. The team works closely and collaboratively with service users, their family and the referrer to provide a seamless pathway from referral to discharge.

Branwell Ward accepts referrals for service users whether informal or detained under the Mental Health Act.

The service is not risk averse and has a willingness to accept referrals which may be challenging and can work successfully with individuals who experience a higher level of complexity and challenge, posing a risk to themselves or others. This is possible as both the Branwell and Wkye’s PICU service, Austen Ward, work closely together in order to assess and manage risk factors.

Branwell Ward offers a rapid response to all referrals, with a target of an hour from the receipt of adequate clinical information. The service also guarantees a care plan will have been created for an individual within five hours of admission.

Branwell Ward’s ethos is about caring for service users and treating people in the least restrictive environment. Service users are able to access the local community via unescorted or escorted leave as appropriate; staffing levels are such that ordinarily leaves can be facilitated. Along with nursing staff, occupational therapists and activity co-ordinators take a role in this activity.

A range of interventions are available on Branwell Ward including mental and physical health assessment, risk assessment, care planning using the My Shared Pathway approach, medication review, medication-free assessments and health management strategies to prevent relapse.

The service has a specialist drugs and alcohol programme in place for all service users to access.

IntroductionCygnet Hospital Wyke offers a range of services for men including acute and psychiatric intensive care along with a specialist locked service for older men. The hospital sits in more than three acres of grounds, which are quiet and private.
