    1. Welcome

Who would have thought we have only one more round of games till the 2013 season is behind us. Itseems only yesterday that registrations closed. A reminder again that the clubs END OF SEASON GALA& TROPHY DAY is scheduled forSaturday October 12th. Further info will follow about the details of theday, but if you missed last year it is a great day for all with trophies presented to the players, football

games, good food, a few bad jokes and more.

    This week Played 10 Won 6 Lost 3 Draw 1 For 27 Against 15

    This season Played 147 Won 80 (54%) Lost 52 Draw 14 For 524 Against 320

    Above is only for Juniors

Sponsors confirmed - Did you see the latest addition to the club house walls. Special thanks to Tim

Gorringe who prepped and installed our sponsors sign and Rod Parish for creating this initiative (See picbelow). It looks fantastic and what is better is it can be taken down so the local artists cant lay their

paint on it!!! Also thanks to Alison and Ric for arranging the new BBQ. The boks bacon and egg sarnieswill be just that little bit better (if possible).

As the season draws to a close, it is time to thank everyone who has helped make the season a

success. Whether it be the coaches who donate their time to prep training regimes and try to keep the

kids having fun, to line markers Mark and Gini who have been heard mumbling insanities at why they

took on the role!!!, to Alison for running an amazing canteen again, those who have volunteered to

help in any way, the Committee for keeping the club functioning, but most of all the kids for making

each week fun. Thanks to everyone for a great season 2013 and hope the last round of games go well.

Just one more newsletter of the season to go!!!

COMMUNITY NOTICE Birth Story: Ina May Gaskin and the farm midwives film screening this Friday nightCinema Cygnet 7pm at the Supper Room Cygnet Town hall. A delightful and inspiring documentaryshowcasing the work of well-known American midwife and author, Ina May Gaskin, along with her

fellow midwives in a community setting (The Farm). The film highlights childbirth in a very positive way

versus the dramatic and fearful portrayals all too often seen in other forms of media.

TEAM PHOTOS It would be great to putteam photos into our last newsletter next

week. If someone from each team could

take a photo of their team and email me

    that would be fantastic.

THE FOOTBALL RAMBLER for the hardcore enthusiasts

The Top 20 Derbies In Europe By Attendance

Watched by a global TV audience of around 650 million, its been described as

the mother of all derbies and the second most important game in the world(after El Clasico) but is the Manchester derby the biggest derby in Europe?

This all depends on two things: (a) how do we define a derby? (b) how do we compare all

    the derbies objectively?

The first question is arguably the more difficult one. Real Madrid vs. Barcelona, Inter Milan vs.

Juventus, and Liverpool vs. Manchester United are all examples of intense rivalries rather than

derbies. We could define a derby as the match between two clubs from the same city, but

this would exclude Newcastle United vs. Sunderland, Borussia Dortmund vs. Schalke 04, Ajax

vs. Feyenoord and Athletic Bilbao vs. Real Sociedad to give just a few examples.

Even within the same city, Fulhams main local derby is with Chelsea, whereas Chelseas is

with Spurs, whose derby is with Arsenal. So even if we were able to compare all European

derbies objectively, the very idea of a derby would always be problematic.

Of course, in terms of European footballing success, all one-city derbies pale in comparison to

Milan, a city whose two teams have amassed a grand total of ten European

Cups/Champions League titles between them (Real Madrid alone are not far behind with

nine, whilst Manchester/Liverpool have eight). In fact Milan is the only city in Europe with

more than one winner of the competition, making any objective success-based comparisons

    of European footballing derbies difficult.

An easier and in many ways more appropriate method for comparison would be to combine

the average attendances of each derby team throughout the 2010-11 season and list them

accordingly. Bear in mind that this is not a list of the fiercest rivalries (which would always be

subjective) and that the attendance figure is for all games throughout the season (not just

    the derby games themselves).

    Notes

All figures are based on Wikipedias top 70 clubs by average attendance. I havent included

any clubs that are outside the top 70, e.g. 1860 Munchen (whose average attendance of20,000 would put the Munich derby in the top ten). This is because Id like to source all the

figures from the same place. However I dont think the list would change dramatically if this

was the case. Fenerbahce (39,542) vs. Besiktas (26,249) would have made the list but the

figures given are not for the 2010-11 season (and the Besiktas figures is unsourced).

The top ten teams without representation in the list are Marseilles (51,081), Eintracht Frankfurt

    (47,335), Napoli (47,210), FC Kaiserslautern (46,378), Hertha Berlin (45,761), Hannover 96

(43,948), Valencia (41,599), VfB Stuttgart (38,847), Porto (36,404) and Shakhtar Donetsk

(33,897). I considered classifying Eintracht Frankfurt vs. FC Kaiserslautern as a derby (whichwith a combined total of 93,713 wouldve made the top ten) but decided not to (see below).

Any list of teams based on average attendance will always be dominated by Germany,

where competitive one-city derbies are uncommon. Ive chosen to include the four biggest

regional derbies and exclude all the others although I think the Ruhrgebiet still has to be

classed as a single agglomeration (as of course does Greater Manchester).

No team has been included twice. This means that Arsenal vs. Spurs is classed as the biggest

London derby, with Chelsea vs. Fulham second. It should be stressed that there is a lot of

overlap when it comes to the London derbies. These four teams have been chosen purely

because they have the highest average attendances, not (at least in the case of the West

London derby) because they have the fiercest rivalry.

The closest distance between two stadiums is of course Milan vs. Inter, where the two teams

share the San Siro. The distance between Anfield and Goodison Park is 0.6 miles; between

Estadio Da Luz and Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon it is 1.4 miles. The longest distance

between two clubs in the list is between Munich and Nuremburg (the two largest cities in

Bavaria), which are around 100 miles apart, raising inevitable questions about how we define

a derby. The distance between Hamburg and Bremen is around 60 miles, between Bilbao

and San Sebastian around 50 miles, between Amsterdam and Rotterdam around 35 miles,

between Lyon and Saint-Etienne around 30 miles. The distance between the

Westfalenstadion and the Veltins Arena is exactly 17 miles, whilst there are exactly ten miles

between St. James Park and the Stadium of Light. (Note miles used for ease of internet

    source)

The smallest difference in ratio between the two average attendances are those between

Milan vs. Inter, Kln vs. Borussia Mnchengladbach and Celtic vs. Rangers. The largest by along way is Barcelona vs. Espanyol (although the difference between Bayern Munich vs. 1860

Munchen would have been bigger still).

Whilst it isnt perfect for all the reasons mentioned, the list above arguably gives us a betterinsight into European football than the list of average attendances itself or the infamous

Deloitte Football League, in showing where the real football powerhouses of Europe lie. Its nosurprise to see the Revierderby topping the list with Manchester, Madrid, Munich (Bavaria),

Barcelona and Milan all close behind. Manchesters success on-the-field the past seasons is

clearly a reflection of the citys status as one of the six football capitals of European club

    football. Let the arguments begin.

    COACHES BOX

Outright and Absolute Decimation:After Milanese based club Internazionale had won a Champions LeagueRound of Sixteen Match away to Chelsea in 2010 their coach came out with amemorable quote along the lines of (Editors Note: So memorable that we

cant remember the exact words), Sometimes a team is under pressure

throughout but holds firm and sneaks a goal on the counter, other times a

team can have a few chances but fail to score, sometimes a team dominates

the match from start to finish that team, was my team!!. Not one to question the great Jose

but I think the most telling part of that quote is what he failed to say, namely, Sometimes a

team cops a right royal flogging and departs the scene with tail firmly positioned between itslegs. On Saturday that was us. The word decimation is one that is overly used these days. The

original meaning relates to a Roman military disciplinary punitive measure whereby everytenth man in the unit is stoned to death by his mates who are spared on this occasion. These

Centurions clearly were a barbarous lot though to be fair its a practice they dispensed with

in around 1967. But in common usage today the term is erroneously bandied around thesedays to denote any type of massacre or wipe-out, not simply the taking of the tenth part as

was intended by the Latin decimatio. I tried to get in touch with club linguistic expert John

Gorrie. Johns son Rory is a Sea Dragon U9 and indeed John himself was last year a member

of a national championship winning team at the Australian Soccer Masters but if you want to

get his goat just trying misusing the word decimation the accurate definition of which he is

the authority. Two days before the match we only had five at training having been almostwiped out through injury and the flu bug that was sweeping through the team. The day

before the match we were already down to ten players who had not yet called off. BySaturday morning we might have had ten players but one no-show due to illness left us with

nine. Does that qualify as decimation John? We knew we had to get the first goal to knock

University of their stride so we targeted their rotund, portly central defender (we had watched

him at Olympia on Youth Cup Day) and figured that if we could get quick through ball to

Isaac he would skin their defender. Indeed we achieved that numerous times and Isaac

rewarded us with two in the first half (including the opener) and one more in the second to

complete his hat-trick. However, with three of our nine on the park still struggling with flu, and

others running out of steam trying to cover too much ground in the warm temperatures it was

always going to be too much of an ask against a skillful, hard running opposition. Isaac was

immense and he caused them trouble all match but its unfair and unreasonable to expect

him to achieve a one hundred percent strike rate. Especially as Uni got wise to the threat andswapped Mr Rotund for one of their quicker players and ensured that any time he did get the

ball Isaac was up against three defenders. To add insult to injury they moved Mr Rotund up

front and there was much gleeful merriment when same player grabbed his first goal for the

season. The fun and laughter was not over though when Rotund-Features grabbed a secondsoon after. With the local fans chanting Hat-Trick, Hat-Trick!! the Uni Coach demonstrated a

nice sense of irony by substituting that player to the dismay of his fans. Before long though he

did rejoin proceedings and the jokes, hilarity and for us humiliation, was complete when he

grabbed his well-deserved hat-trick. As mentioned earlier, sometimes a team cops a right

royal flogging but I just wonder how we would have gone had we been able to field a full

squad. I entered the data into Robey and Hendricks, a predictive formula which uses thecoefficient of variationblah, blah, blah. Turns out we wouldnt have lost 3-9. According to

Hendricks and Robey we would have lost 4-7 so there you have it. Good to get that one

sorted out. Hopefully though well have most of our players back this week and if thats the

case well be a much different proposition. Its been a good first season for the club in Youth

Soccer and heres hoping we rally and end it on a high.

    8. Match Reports

    Cygnet U/6

Fantastic day to end my soccer season with the sea dragons budding soccer stars. Despite the

score it was a fairly close match. Lots of runs at goals from one end to the other, only to saved by

the determined Calvin defenders. Charlie Gorringe had a great game with many of the Calvin

breakaways being mowed down by him. Archie was speedy as ever and has really improvedthose foot skills. Abby, William and Flynn seemed to be having so much fun, regardless of the

score. All would jump in and help when needed and then back to having a fun shiny day. Charlie

Hooper was oh so close on many occasions scoring one goal and booting at least six near misses.

fantastic effortThanks to all the players for trying so hard and making a great team.

See you all at our Gala Day October 12

This week the boys spread out and covered the field well. We dominated this game with great

running and dribbling of the ball. The boys are starting to really attack the ball from every kick off

which is making them a strong team. Well done.

We all know there are four seasons: Spring Summer Autumn and Winter. But I often look at August

as a season of its own. One were the swamp harriers, striated pardalotes, welcome swallows and

if one is lucky, swift parrots return. Wedge-tailed eagles begin to prepare their nests for the

breeding season. Daffodils flower, silver wattles begin to colour the hills, and the grass starts to call

for the mower. I know of a few that have coined this period as Sprung - the unofficial 5th season of

the year. And what has this to do with the U8 Greens match versus Channel Christian Silver, well

very little apart from the grass on the pitch was in need of a mow as the ball struggled to roll any

more than a few metres unless kicked hard. There was also one large english dock weed ( Rumex

species) with its flower head 45 cm high mid pitch. Many an English botanist may have had a field

day perusing this very meadow like grassland.

As the first half kicked along, the referee (me) felt something odd was about. At one stage I was

heard yelling to the parents Is the ball pumped up enough. I knew the grass was long, but this

ball was just not right. Regardless, the U8 Green pumped their way to a 4-1 half time score. Whilst

the oranges where guzzled, it clicked. We were using a size 4 ball. I proceeded to change balls to

the correct size 3, but probably should not have as the 2 nd half showed that a size 4 ball was

indeed required to counter the friction offered by the long Rye grass.

The kids continued their unbeaten run with only one more victory required for an undefeated

season. With grandmas bday party the night before, twins Kate and Holly had something to

prove as they took the midfield by storm and both also nailed a goal each. Big Ethan could havehad two typical poachers goals but had to settle for one as the ref called late challenge on the

goal keeper. TV replays showed if was a 50/50 line call. Little Ethan may have nudged player of

the match with his outstanding defence and numerous dribbles towards goal, one paying off.

Tristan was outstanding often running the length of the pitch and putting in inch perfect crosses,

Zac invoked memories of Lionel Messi towards the end with a length of the field run that was

defeated by a fine goalie save, and Lauren should have nailed the goal she is striving hard for,

only to see the goalie again thwart her numerous attempts. Everyone put a big effort in and we all

await that final game to see if it can be two seasons undefeated for a number of the kids.

This top of the table clash was always expected to be a tough encounter and that is exactly what

happened do not let the score line be an indication. Prior to this match it was a win a piece but

they shaded us 5-4 on aggregate. In short this was the Grand Final.

    And the Dragons roared!

The first half was very tough with neither team in the ascendancy and no chances at scoring

being offered. The stalemate was broken when Griffin Did a Beckham

This saw the Dragons 1 Nil up at half time.

As a coach, there was very little to say during the orange break as everyone had played so well.

It was heartening to see the kids stick to the game plan of:

The attackers putting pressure on the defenders when they have the ball. Quick throw ins

Giving the person who is throwing the ball in plenty of options by not standing still but

    moving around.

Our attackers having plenty of support and not being isolated.

The result was the opposition wilting with each additional second half goal.

This was a fine result against a very strong team.

    Cygnet U/9 Green

The U9 Greens faced one of their arch rivals this week with a re-match against the St Aloysius

Sharks. Despite not getting their long-awaited win, they played a full-spirited game and came

away with a draw and having not conceded a goal a pretty good result considered

    previous matches.

They (the Greens) were unlucky not to have scored with several players coming very close

but getting foiled by goal posts and a quite skilled goalie.

We had Toby, from the U8s, come in to lend a hand (foot?) this week as we were a man

down with Jase away. He proved himself pretty useful in the first half and volunteered for

goals in the second a brave choice considering the opposition but was up to the

    challenge. Nice work Toby.

The rest of the team played a huge match with everyone putting in a heap of effort and

concentration. Previously the Sharks have got the upper hand towards the end of the match

but this time the Greens continued their pressure to the end and didnt let them break

    through.

One more to go for the season. Keep up the great work team.

The last day of winter bunged on a bit of beautiful bright sunshine for our third match againstFriends Blue. On each previous match we have beaten this team 6-1. Today our team was

depleted, with Codi, Toby and coach Lorna away on holiday (and of course we hope they

are getting weather as lovely as ours today), so we recruited Cobi to make up the numbers.

Cobi volunteered as goalie and as soon as the action began we knew we were in for a good

game. Friends seemed to have grown in stature and developed in skill since our last

engagement, and the match seemed much more even. Saras and Ina showed good

teamwork in the back while Elliot and Romi kept up the pressure up forward. Riley and Rory

covered the pitch with heaps of energy. Nothing from Friends seemed to have any chance

of getting through Cobi, while our forwards had a few narrowly missed opportunities at goal.

Then Elliot found himself in possession 15 meters out and saw a chance. He made a beautiful

chip which sailed, in slow motion mind you, over the heads of the opposition and right into

the middle of the net. We spectators tried to cheer, but what came out of our mouths was allin slow motion too. That was the best goal I have seen all year. I'm still talking in slow motion.

Riley gallantly put his hand up to put on the red jersey in the second half. Despite our team

tiring towards the end of the game with no subs, the tight defence line of Eliot and Romi

didn't let a lot of action through, so Riley probably wished he had stashed a soduko book in

his sock. (Elliot saw some action of a different kind: his first-half hero-goal must have impressedFriends' chief striker because she was never far away.) Cobi outclassed the opposition and

scored two well executed goals before taking a 'rest' in the back; he had another game yet

to play, after all. Ina and Saras continued their developing teamwork in the front line, missing

Beautiful weather in Cygnet for our penultimate game of the season and a later start which is

usually good for the U12's. After a good first five minutes we moved into a commanding 1 - 0

lead as Kai got the chance to run at the Campbell Street keeper and made no mistake with

    the finish.

It was a good team performance again at home with everyone keeping position and doing

their best to keep Campbell Street from getting into the match. We were getting the ball

down and making lots of chances with no sign of our opposition having a shot or troubling

    our defensive line.

Then Kai popped up again with another break down the right wing and it was 2 - 0.

Again, we kept controlling midfield but couldn't add to the scoreline before half time,

although we had spurned a lot of chances.

HT : Cygnet Sea Dragons 2 V 0 Campbell Street

Much of the same in the second half, we kept possession well and played some good

football passing the ball around whilst going forward for another goal. It was against the run

of play when Campbell Street pulled one back after a mix up at the near post where we let

another shot squeeze in. Unfortunately it was just like the goal we conceded last week at

Kingsborough. 2 1 Again it fell to Kai to get his hat trick and put the game out ofCampbell Street's reach as we stretched our lead to 3 - 1. How we didn't add to our goal tally

for the remainder of the half was quite unbelievable, but it was a great game to watch with

some exciting football. We created lots of chances but resolute goalkeeping and missed

efforts from our strikers meant the game ran down to the final whistle remaining at 3 -1.

But another great performance from the U12's at home.

    Chorus:

    Green is the Colour

    Football is the Game

    Were all together

    And winning is our aim

So cheer us onThrough the sun and the rain

For Cygnet, Cygnet is our name

    Verse 1:

Here by the Huon whether rain or fine

    We can shine

    All the time

    Home or away

    Come and see us play

    Youre welcome any day.

    Repeat Chorus

    To Finish:

    What do we eat?

    SeaweedHow do we eat it?

    Raw
