Dear friends, welcome to the first issue of the Cygnus Community Review.

So much has happened since our last issue. Many but not all of you know that Ann slipped away from her physical body in July last year. While Sam Napier prepared her tribute issue, we discovered Cygnus had exhausted all lines of credit. The financial facts were undeniable; sending out 40,000 magazines for free was unsustainable. We said goodbye to four of our staff and sent out an appeal to all our members for donations to help us get through the winter. I had no idea whether Cygnus could or should continue. I explored many possibilities.

Eventually, after much consultation (thank you all who so kindly gave your time and advice) we fixed the new subscription for the emerging Cygnus Community at £2.50/month or £25 per year for individuals. It was so painful to break with the joy of giving the magazine out for free. But the new Cygnus Community Review will be a gift we, and the active subscribers, can pass on to those we know who feel isolated as they make their way through the crazy world the media presents us with.

Last night I had a vivid dream and, thanks to Hermes who barked just as the

dream finished, I awoke with it fresh in my mind to write down and share with you.

We (you and I) are all in a room with a kindly mentor who asks us to look at a screen. Before us, a beautiful pattern grows from a single seed. It’s a fractal, one of those patterns like the beautiful Mandelbrot Set.

Our mentor speaks over the film music. ‘You see the pattern? It is yourselves, look—there are your bodies,’ and sure enough this pattern of scintillating lights takes up the form of humans, ‘And listen—now you sing. Do you feel the tune playing in your body as an instrument?’

We feel each cavity resonating in turn, our heads, our larynx, our hearts, our guts, our pelvis and our very bones. ‘Watch closely as you begin to dance together.’ We look again, as the view moves out from one form dancing and singing alone to becoming a whole chorus and orchestra all singing, moving, dancing together. From every detail, more creations spin off in perfect harmonies.

‘So my friends, do you wish to play the part of the score already written in your heart that only you can play or do you wish to continue following the will of your ego playing your own tunes, your own nightmares?

‘You can decide. ‘When you can say ‘Not my will be done but

Thy will be done’, you are surrendering your will to the voice in your heart and you have taken up your part in the orchestra of creation.

‘Just like in any orchestra, we instruments continue perfecting our playing till it becomes second nature, till it becomes odd not to do so.’

Our mentor finishes by saying, ‘You are instruments in the divine dance of creation. When you play the part written in your hearts you are participating in a divine creation never before seen, only imagined by the composer, the creator before her orchestra was assembled.’

Well, dear friends, I invite you to find the divine will stored neatly in your own hearts.

Let’s play—together! Let’s support each other, as we liberate our deepest secrets. The music won’t be complete without us.

Several of the articles in this issue are written by Cygnus members from their own life experiences. As more of you choose to subscribe, we hope to bring you many others. In the meantime, why don’t you form or join a local group of Cygnus Community members? I extend my heartfelt thanks again to the generosity of all those members who donated and have enabled Cygnus to stand a chance of re emerging in this new way.

Maggy Whitehouse is an independent Minister, stand-up comedian and author on Bible mysteries and Kabbalah.

When I first started training as a healer, back in 1990, the (then)

National Federation of Spiritual Healers sent me a list of potential mentors who might be able to help me during my probation period. I was very new indeed to the holistic world and knew absolutely no one even remotely interested in spiritual work so I felt very much out on my own.

I chose Elizabeth from the list that the NFSH sent for two reasons: firstly she was the only one given the title ‘Mrs’ and in my youthful arrogance I didn’t want my teacher to be what I termed ‘a mad, cat-ridden spinster with hairy legs.’ The second reason was because Elizabeth facilitated regular groups with meditation and discussion and I knew, even then, that spiritual work would need courage, commitment—and community.

I got my just deserts for my presumption about the kind of spiritual teacher I wanted: the ‘Mrs’ on the list I received was a misprint and, although Elizabeth didn’t have any cats, she was definitely single, had the hairiest legs I’d ever seen and was what most people would definitely regard as utterly bonkers. She truly believed that she was the reincarnation of both Eve and the Virgin Mary and that those she was gathering around her were the disciples reincarnated.

At the first meeting, I sat there quivering with apprehension. But as the morning went on, it was apparent that the work that this slightly less than apostolic group were doing together—whatever their actual beliefs might be—was supportive and helpful. Elizabeth might have some ideas that were way beyond my radar but she was also a loving and strong facilitator of a group where people had the opportunity to communicate and grow.

Even more, as I continued going, I made friends with some of the other regulars and started attending workshops that they ran or went to. Within six months I was a part of a wider spiritual community in which I could find companions, mentors, wisdom, laughter—and discernment. From there I was able

to find my ‘soul companion group’ in the tradition which was perfect for me and my spiritual development.

However, that group was in London, held once a week on a Thursday, and I lived in Birmingham. It was quite a challenge to commit to driving down and back for the evening once a week, but I have never regretted it for a moment.

From both those groups came the roots that were to underpin my work as an author, a workshop leader and as an independent Catholic priest working with the all-inclusive mystical traditions that underpin Christianity and all other faiths. Without them and the people in them who supported, challenged and even angered or upset me, I am sure I would have faltered, doubted (even more!) and maybe even fallen by the wayside.

However, it might all have been far less of a baptism of fire had there been something like a Community Café group back in the days when I was starting out: a regular meeting of like-minded people where I could have learnt the spiritual ropes and got to know people on a similar path to mine.

Such groups are a wonderful place for both new and experienced people in the holistic field to connect, share experiences and learn—and they also give a space where we can be held accountable for our commitment to spiritual work and development. This is not in a nasty way as in ‘you should be doing this or that’ but in a loving environment where others notice our dreams and goals and can hold the energy for us to recognise and work with our own resistance. Communities are vital, too, for helping us take care of ourselves instead of burning out in taking care of others.

It seems that you think the same. Since Geoff mooted the idea of Cygnus Community Cafés across the UK last November, we’ve been thrilled by your response. Readers have been coordinating gatherings in homes, community centres, pubs and cafés and already there are 49 groups (16 listed to the left with dates).

Each meeting varies: some invite you to bring food to share, some offer tea, coffee and cake. Most start out as simple circles where everyone is given the opportunity to introduce themselves. Once a group grows beyond ten or twelve the gathering is likely

to adopt our version of the World Café system (http://www.theworldcafe.com/method.html) where participants form groups of four or five after an initial talk.

In Tyne and Wear, Angela Cousins and Sue Lancaster were thrilled to be facilitators. ‘We used to have a similar group called ‘Quest’ in the area but since that closed there has been nothing like it and this seems to be fulfilling a real need,’ said Angela. ‘The format went down really well; we had 20 people and loads of apologies from others who want to come another time and people were already discussing starting a book group in addition to a monthly meeting.’

Ann White in Stroud asked participants to bring a lunch to share and was delighted when several people told her afterwards that that had really helped them to mingle and feel at home. ‘I had put out posters all over Stroud and booked a venue but I had no idea who might be coming or who was interested. I was delighted when 15 people turned up,’ she said. ‘It’s lovely that subscribers can actually meet at last. For the moment we’re going to continue meeting in the same place and we’ll definitely have a speaker but I’m entirely open to others organising the meetings, not just me, and finding other suitable venues too.’

In Taunton, Robin Littman focused on asking attendees what kind of direction they would like for future meetings. ‘It was a real eye-opener for me,’ he said. ‘The group were certainly seeking spiritual growth but they also wanted to make a difference in the world—addressing both inner and outer work. It’s possible that groups like these could address social change as well as guide and support each other.’

We’d love to hear from you if you’d consider facilitating or setting up a Cygnus Community Café. If so, please contact Geoff Napier at [email protected].

Award-winning vegetarian cook Rose Elliot was raised in the spiritual community of White Eagle Lodge but is now a practising Buddhist. She tells of the importance of breaking away from the tradition that no longer serves you and trusting the heart to know what is right and true for the next stage.

Breaking up is hard to do’, goes the song and it is; we all know that. Perhaps less

well known, though, is the pain of parting from a group or organisation that has been deeply meaningful to us, particularly if it is of a religious or spiritual nature. Moving away can affect us profoundly and shake us to the core, as I know from personal experience.

In my case the situation was complicated by the fact that the organisation was run by my family and that I had grown up in it and worked there for many years. The basic teaching was sound but there were some aspects of the organisation that I was not happy with. I began to feel increasingly out of kilter with the people, the aims and some of the things that were going on. What started as

a vague feeling of uneasiness or irritation progressed to anger and frustration with myself and the people involved.

There were very few people I could talk to. I was afraid that if I expressed my doubts, it could destroy the faith of other people or damage the organisation. Also, I found it difficult to know whether to trust what I was feeling inside or to listen to the organisation’s leaders when they told me it was just my ego that was giving me the doubts and that I needed to do what I was told and be more humble and trusting.

At that time I did not know how to tell the difference between the inner voice of true guidance and the voice of the ego. I now know that you can recognise the voice of the spirit by its characteristics. It is kind, honest, open-minded, calm, quiet and gentle; tolerant, accepting; non-judgmental and patient; loving, generous and forgiving. When you listen to it, you feel a sense of peace and strength; when you close yourself off from it, you feel unhappy, discordant, confused and full of fear, as I did.

In the end I felt such a lack of congruity that I simply could not go on. I moved away which was hard and painful but worth it for the freedom of being able to be true to myself and for the strength and wisdom that I gained.

In my book I Met A Monk, in which I have reflected on many aspects of my spiritual journey, I have described in more detail what happened. The monk, incidentally, only came into my life recently; had I met him before, and known

what I know now, I would have had greater understanding of the situation and maybe more wisdom. For instance, I did not know it at the time but practising the simple system of mindfulness meditation that the monk taught would have helped me greatly in finding peace and trusting my own inner guidance.

I am sometimes asked what I would advise anyone else to do in similar circumstances. I would say be open to change; give yourself time to listen to and process your feelings. Meditate. Help the process of letting go and moving on by practising forgiveness daily; forgive yourself, the organisation, the teaching, the people… Keep on until you feel clear, clean and free inside. If you find forgiveness difficult you might like to use the Buddha’s simple practice of metta, or loving kindness, that I have described in the book; you have to persist or, as the Buddha said, ‘just do it’, but it does work, freeing you, freeing others and helping you to move on.

Pray for clarity, that you will be shown what to do. Then surrender the whole situation to the universe, to spirit, to the angels—whatever source resonates for you, trusting that you will receive the help you need and you will; in the words of Dorothea Brande, ‘unseen forces will come to your aid’. Surprising things will happen, people will come into your life, doors will open; as you let go of the past, the future will start to form in front of you, like green shoots coming up on parched ground; all will be well.

Moving On Rose Elliot

I MET A MONKRose Elliot

There are many worthwhile books on Buddhism and its principles but this one shines out amongst them because it sets a stimulating goal—eight weeks to love, happiness and freedom—and shows how to fulfil it. Rose Elliott, a pioneering vegetarian cookery expert and a woman with a fascinating spiritual background, cuts to the chase, offering a series of concise workshops structured into eight chapters and written in her easy, free-flowing and openhearted narrative style that keeps you turning the pages. With simple and sincere profundity, Rose explains mindfulness meditation and the Buddha’s Four Noble Truths, illumining their appeal to 21st century life with engaging insights into her personal history. She met a monk and he changed her life—and he can change your life too.

THE AFTERLIFE BIBLESarah Bartlett

Surprisingly this book does not begin with historical and mythological accounts of the afterlife but with stories of personal perception and the search for evidence. Within 50 pages it is comfortably exploring past lives and from then on the sky’s the limit. Sarah does examine Greek, Egyptian and other beliefs in the afterlife but takes a much wider brief from listing those beings which tradition and legend say may be experienced there as well as discussing the nature of the soul and the purpose of suffering. She ends the book with a wide-ranging series of guides as to how to experience past-life regression, encounters with angels, channelling and mediumship as well as other spiritually-related topics. An excellent and fascinating reference book although anyone interested in investigating any of the subject matter in depth would want to follow up with other titles.

PROOF OF HEAVENDr. Eben Alexander

Eminent neurosurgeon Dr. Eben Alexander always considered himself a man of science. But one morning in 2008 he fell into a coma after suffering a rare form of bacterial meningitis. Scans of his brain revealed massive damage. He was not expected to survive.

As his family prepared themselves for the worst, something miraculous happened. Dr. Alexander’s brain went from near total inactivity to awakening. He woke a changed man, certain of the infinite reach of the soul, certain of life beyond death. In Proof of Heaven Dr. Alexander shares his experience, pieced together from notes he made as soon as he was able to write again. Unlike many other accounts of near-death experiences, he is able to explain why his brain was incapable of fabricating his journey into the afterlife. And that is what makes this book an absolute must-read!

MAP OF HEAVENDr. Eben Alexander

When Harvard-educated neurosurgeon Dr. Eben Alexander wrote about his own startling near-death experience in his best-selling Proof of Heaven, he was contacted by vast numbers of people from all walks of life. His story had touched them personally and they, in turn, had their own miraculous experiences of the afterlife to share with him. This book recounts some of these astonishing stories, each offering new illumination via their many-faceted near-death encounters and messages from departed loved ones. Drawing on these accounts and on insights from religious leaders, visionaries and philosophers as well as scientific investigations into human consciousness, Dr. Alexander has produced another gripping, page-turning book offering proof that heaven really does exist.

THE PEACE THAT PASSES ALL UNDERSTANDING...

THE LAW OF LIGHTLars Muhl

Lars Muhl, author of The O Manuscript [Code 231206, £9.99], has had a lifelong burning interest in Jesus, not only as an archetype but also in relation to the Essenes from the Dead Sea. The Law of Light is the result of his many years spent studying Aramaic and the techniques of Yeshua (Jesus). Yeshua spoke Aramaic. By reading Yeshua’s message through Aramaic eyes, his teachings offer not just another interpretation of the New Testament but the unveiling of a secret message that attempts, once and for all, to settle centuries-

old conceptions of sin and once again to connect man with the heavenly spiritual source. The core of Yeshua’s Aramaic message is intimacy, freedom, selfless awareness, unconditional love, compassion and forgiveness. In all he says, there exists a hidden invitation to us to be present in, and dedicated to, everything with which we engage.

Shann Nix Jones Lessons From The Farm

In 1986 Shann Nix Jones was an ambitious journalist in San Francisco

who went undercover in the high schools to do a story about the budget cuts in education—a story that Drew Barrymore later turned into the movie, Never Been Kissed. Shann was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and should have had everything—but she was deeply unhappy and decided on a radical change of life.

She takes up the story: ‘I sold my home and came to the UK where I met Rich, a Welsh farmer. He was a gentle giant, a talented wood worker and harp maker who lived on a beautiful self-sustaining farm overlooking the Irish Sea. We fell in love and Rich brought me and my two children to live with him and his two children on the farm.

‘I was plunged into an alien world of feeding animals, lifting hay bales, fighting through knee-deep mud, carrying heavy buckets of water. It was a steep learning curve for a city girl! I learned to make jam, beer, bread, cheese and sausages—and cook dinner for eight hungry family members. I was exhausted and often at a loss.

‘Even so, living in harmony with nature, watching the seasons turn, picking blackberries from the hedgerows and making my own jam gave me something that the city had never given me. I was happy at last.

‘Then my little boy Benji started having terrible bronchial infections and we had

to take him repeatedly to the GP for antibiotics. Rich suggested that we get a goat. He knew from his Welsh farming traditions that goats milk was good for asthma and eczema.

‘We bought our first Chuckling Goat, a beautiful black and white girl named Buddug, and I learned to milk her. Benji loved Buddug’s raw goats milk and his bronchial infections stopped—his inhalers were no longer needed.

‘Suddenly we had too much goats milk! It was going off in my fridge. So I went to Yorkshire and took classes on how to make soaps and skincream from our own raw goats milk, just to get rid of the surplus.

‘We found, to our amazement, that the soaps and creams cured Benji’s eczema! Soon other mums on the school run started asking for our products, to help their own children.

‘In 2011 Rich and I both quit our day jobs and launched our little business, Chuckling Goat, making natural healing skincare. We also worked with Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride to learn how to make kefir, a powerful Eastern European probiotic drink made with raw goats milk and real kefir grains. This is helpful for IBS, coeliac and auto-immune disorders.

‘Then Rich went into hospital for a serious operation and came out with an MRSA infection, down the length of his ten-inch abdominal incision. The doctors had nothing to offer us to treat the superbug infection which was eating its way deeper into his wound every day.

‘Desperate and frightened, I turned to my computer for answers. I found a crazy story of some perfumiers who had used essential oils, back in the days of the Black Plague, to fight infections.

‘I played around with the essential oils that I used to scent my soaps and came up with my own combination of essential oils. I treated Rich with a combination of those oils (which we later called CG Oil) and our own probiotic kefir.

‘Amazingly—it worked. Two weeks later, Rich swabbed completely clear of MRSA. Today he is happy, healthy and back on his tractor.

‘The natural healing skincare products that I learned to make as a result of that adventure were picked up by Fortnum & Mason and today we have our own Chuckling Goat store, as well as a thriving online business. We are now working with Aberystwyth University and the Welsh Assembly Government Innovation Sector to develop further testing and application

of our CG Oil and our kefir. ‘My time on the farm, using natural

healing remedies to save my family, taught me three important lessons:

‘1: Nature has the answers. She has been working on these issues for 13.8 billion years and she has the answers. The powerful compounds which work to foil bacteria are natural ones—because nature has already tried and tested them.

‘2: You are the planet. Modern medicine is based on the germ theory of Louis Pasteur—that our insides are sterile and that an infection is caused when a germ gets in. Antibiotics are the weapon of choice to find the germ and kill it.

‘But your body is in fact an Amazon rain forest of life. When you experience antibiotics, sugar, stress or environmental toxins, it’s like pouring bleach into the river. It may kill what’s causing the infection but it kills everything else as well.

‘3. Connect and co-operate. It’s not just about killing the bugs, it’s about re-seeding your inner environment. Our most powerful ally is kefir, a powerful ancient probiotic that contains up to 47 different strains of powerful yeasts and bacteria that permanently repopulate the gut, re-seeding it with the good flora and fauna it needs to heal.’

HEALTHY LIVING

This is a mesmerising true story that makes you feel as if you’re living Shann’s life alongside her. Leaving her city-girl existence as a radio talk show host to marry a Welsh harp maker and farmer, Shann immersed herself in the challenge of her husband’s remote hill-farm. Inspired by her love for and connection with the farm’s goats, Shann began to create naturally healing remedies from a combination of essential oils, goats milk, probiotics and honey which now sell world-wide. An uplifting, un-put-downable read about second-chance love, crisis and happy endings.

THE COMPASSIONATE PRACTIONERJane Wood

Why do many patients abandon their health practitioner after one or two visits? Is the problem the medicine or an inattentive practitioner? Jane Wood, a successful homeopathic practitioner and life coach, explores how you, the practitioner, can develop a positive relationship with the patient, one conducive to healing. Most important are: the art of listening, of knowing your prejudices, observing the patient’s body language as well as what he/she tells you, exercising your intuition, listening mindfully and maintaining appropriate boundaries and ethical standards. Finally, self-care for the practitioner. This is a valuable book for all health practitioners, Complimentary/Alternative or traditional.

WHEAT BELLYWilliam Davis

Cardiologist William Davis’s compelling book tells us exactly why we should avoid all wheat products, particularly the modern genetically-modified ‘Frankenwheat.’ He presents compelling evidence that wheat consumption contributes heavily to diabetes, ADHD, autism, asthma, IBS, depression and acne as well as gluten

sensitivity and the stomach bulges that give the book its name.Wheat has always been a problematic food for humans. But

modern genetic changes have made it a much more so. It’s not only the gluten. Wheat Belly reveals that two slices of wholemeal bread will raise blood sugar more a bar of chocolate. Part Two provides a user-friendly, step-by-step plan to eliminate wheat in a recipe book with plenty of treats such as pancakes and French toast, a basic bread recipe, soups and main courses.

Ayman and Rowan are dedicated to the ancient teaching that sacred commerce can and will prevent warfare and bring peace to the world. Here they describe the roots of their teaching about the principles of using trade for the greater good with details of the sacred ‘Merchant Priests’ of ancient Egypt.

The priests of Egypt had vocations and roles above and beyond what we are

accustomed to in our time. Back then, the temples were the centres of learning and the priests were the teachers, specialising in different disciplines. Some Egyptian priests never left the temple; they served by staying in perpetual dialogue with the universal current of life. Other priests were scribes, healers, mediators and celebrants. Still others were known as the Merchant Priests who worked with the Gift of Commerce as a mission to serve humanity.

Merchant Priests focused on society as a whole, working to balance the collective psychic state. They traveled specific energy pathways that were known to them because of their high vibration. These ley lines became the trade routes that led from one temple to the next, allowing precious goods to be exchanged between regions.

The Merchant Priesthood shepherded the ebb and flow of exchange between different levels of society, thereby ensuring that wealth did not get bottlenecked. No one place or social class could pool resources at the expense of another.

Goods were seen as vessels of energy and also a means to engage and connect on a personal level. Trade, in many ways, functioned as social intercourse. The Merchant Priests placed great value on cultivating empathy and friendly relationships, in order to form a basis for commercial dealings. Relationships were understood to be the means by which this harmonious state was established throughout a culture. In summary, the Merchant Priests knew that Emotional Intelligence was a prerequisite for Prosperity. After all, it was Prosperity rather than profit that was most important to them. Abundance is having access to resources needed at the time they are

needed; Prosperity is the enjoyment and the sharing of this Abundance.

From physical manifestations such as muscle tension, skin tone, vocal quality, facial expression and even heart rate and blood pressure, the Merchant Priest learnt to sense the texture and temperature of the emotional side of trade. In time they developed the ability to equalise and balance the energy of emotions that swirled around the marketplace.

They worked to raise the frequency/vibration of an emotion, whereby the emotion is lifted or raised from a lower octave to a higher one such as, for example, lifting the root emotion of fear to a level where it could be felt as concern. Likewise, a Merchant Priest could also transform the root emotion of anger into courage, courage into passion and so on.

They were taught, too, how to recognise and contain the emotion of jealousy—so prevalent in prosperity issues—learning

first to experience it fully in themselves. Tending to emotion in a literate and intelligent way, individuals learned to listen to what ‘the green-eyed monster’ was saying, seeing it as an ally. By respecting the emotion as a communication containing vital information, they would listen to its signal and learn about what they truly wanted, lifting it to a state of grace—the ability to receive what is truly theirs.

This is the foundation of Emotional Literacy—to pause, for example, when we are afraid and to notice: my body is sending me a signal of fear. Making the emotion of anger or fear conscious in this way may sound simple—and in a way it is—however, it requires an intentional moment of self-reflection which can easily be drowned out by the power of the emotion’s habitual tendency to trigger an unconscious, knee-jerk response of fight, flight or freeze.

The good news is that, more recently in our evolution, we have developed a neocortex that enables us to bypass the automatic reaction with a conscious response, one that is more appropriate to the reality of the situation in which we have found ourselves.

The treatment for anger, fear or jealousy, for example, is so simple and elegant that you can test it out and put it to good use immediately. The Merchant Priests called this ‘adding a drop of joy.’

When you feel angry or fearful, bring the emotion to consciousness and call up a moment of joy that you can remember and focus on the feeling of it. By adding a drop of joy to the negative emotion, an alchemical reaction occurs, transforming the negative into positive.

We can learn to conjure joy at will by calling on memories or fantasy. Your brain does not know the difference between an event that is actually occurring in the moment and an event that is occurring in your imagination. When you remember and relive a joyful moment, your body will automatically recreate the chemistry of the experience. Then, like the Merchant Priests, you can receive what is truly yours and experience grace.

Try it yourself. Next time you are upset, angry or jealous, acknowledge the fact, become conscious about it and add a drop of joy. You will be amazed.

TIMELESS SIMPLICITYJohn Lane

This book is about simplicity—not destitution, not parsimony, not self-denial—but the restoration of real wealth in the midst of an affluence in which we are starving the spirit. It’s not about withdrawing to some remote smallholding but about the advantages of living a less cluttered, less stressful life in which we have less but enjoy more, enjoying time to do the work we love,

to spend with our families, to pursue creative projects, to eat well or, simply, just to be. And why should we embrace such a life? Because, as Lane shows, the environmental results of our present runaway consumerism will, sooner or later, make a more frugal lifestyle not only desirable but imperative.

DEEP MAGIC, DRAGONS & TALKING MICEAlister McGrath

Alister McGrath, Professor of science and religion at the University of Oxford, dives deep into the heart of the Christian mystic C.S. Lewis. In eight imaginary conversations with Lewis, McGrath presents us with a compelling account of the complexity and breadth of his ideas together with an attractive image of the man himself. It’s well-known that the Narnia stories are Lewis’s imaginative retelling of the Biblical story of creation, rebellion, redemption, a new heaven and earth and this book shows how Lewis believed that storytelling was the way to present a perennial worldview to all people. McGrath also opens up the characters and roles within The Inklings—Lewis’s inner circle of critical friends—and the way they worked together to refine their writing (including J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings). Reading this book will re-kindle your love of the Chronicles of Narnia and Lewis’s other works.

POWERS OF TWOJoshua Wolf Shenk

We’ve all heard of ‘the power behind the throne’ and also of the genius loner but this book reveals a deeper secret: two is the magic number of creative work. Shenk is a born storyteller who weaves the lives of famous duos as diverse as Lennon and McCartney to the Curies. We not only seek a soul mate for love but for thinking, imagining and creating. In a beautifully-paced book he reveals how pairs begin to talk, think and even look alike; how the most successful ones thrive on conflict; and why some pairs flame out while others endure. And there is hope, too, for those who don’t have a creative partner: spirit will take the other’s place. A book that is both entertaining and highly original with deep insights on releasing our own creativity.

Roger H. Moller EMR—A Beginner’s Guide

Roger H Moller was the manager of a telecoms development laboratory full of computers when his body began to break down—affected directly by the radiation from his mobile phone. Within a few weeks he was unable to tolerate being near virtually all electrical devices. He has re-learnt how to live safely with electromagnetic radiation and is now Principal Investigator at Electric Forester Investigations which offers independent EMR home surveys.

Natural EMR—electromagnetic radiation—sunlight is something

that people’s bodies have evolved to deal with, is not the same as the always-on man-made electromagnetic radiation—EMR—we now have in the digital age. At least the sun still sets behind the earth once a day, unlike always-on devices.

Combined with artificial light, our ‘wirelessly illuminated’ world tricks the body’s normal day-night cycles and our cells struggle. Put simply, our bodies can lose track of whether to be in active ‘day-mode’ or repair ‘night-time/sleep-mode’

leading to any number of problems. Electricity and its associated capabilities

are everywhere and add immeasurably to the quality of virtually everyone’s life. Amazingly rapid developments in the use of wireless mean everyone has to learn new ways of interacting safely with these wonderful technologies. However, there was no consumer safety testing of mobile and wireless devices before the genie was let out of the bottle so we have all irrevocably become the unwitting participants in the biggest non-elective uncontrolled experiment ever conducted on the human race. The majority of most people’s EMR exposure comes from items within their homes and from the portable devices they habitually carry with them.

Symptoms of Electrical Hypersensitivity may include skin rash, sleep disorders, muscle and joint pain (fibromyalgia), depression, headaches, dizziness, nausea, difficulty concentrating, memory loss, irritability, anxiety, weakness, muscle spasms, numbness, tingling, leg and foot pain, ‘flu-like’ symptoms and fever. EMR has also been linked to diseases such as diabetes, cancer and childhood leukaemia, miscarriages, MS, depression and chronic fatigue syndrome as well as to many of the sleep disorders plaguing our modern society.

The good news is that cleaning up your family’s electro-smog contaminated environment can often be easy, cost-free and within your power, provided you

know what you are up against. For that, you typically need an EMR survey or some sort of device to reveal what is around you. Electro-smog comes in three basic radiation varieties: Electric, Magnetic and Electromagnetic or RF (Radio Frequency/microwave radiation). However, you can also help by taking simple precautions and by ensuring that you and your family keep safe distances from equipment which may be causing you harm.

It’s a good idea to notice how you feel when you are using your mobile or cordless phone or spending a long time at a computer. Compare how you feel outside in the countryside as opposed to in your office or at home. Many people have heard of ‘sick building syndrome’ and EMFs will be a big part of that.

House wiring typically gives out electric fields. Cookers, washing machines, immersion heaters and other high-powered mains devices give out mostly magnetic fields and cordless phones, mobiles and wireless devices rely on pulsed microwaves (RF) for their operation. The table below suggests the distances we should keep from these sources based on measurements of similar devices.

Simple tips for reducing EMFs

★ Hold your mobile phone away from your ear when using it and don’t keep it in your pocket.

★ When cell reception is low, turn off your mobile phone service because cell phones reportedly increase output when reception is low. This may explain the paradox of brain tumors for rural cell phone users.

★ Keep a distance from Wi-Fi routers and access points which have significant radiation at one metre of distance and transmit non-stop, even when you are not on a computer.

★ Use corded phones instead of wireless ones.

★ Remove dimmer switches and fluorescent lights.

★ Turn off all electricity at the plug in your bedroom at night.

★ Switch off the Wi-Fi on your computer when you’re not using it.

★ Choose LCD over Plasma TVs.

THE MUSIC OF THE PLANTS

Plants perceive sound and, given the opportunity, love to play music. I kid you not! A couple of weeks ago I watched in disbelief as a plant played along with a wind instrumentalist. Scientists and gardeners, midwives and musicians, are all joining in this captivating field of exploration. Jonathan Black The Supernatural Power of Dreams

Order line: 01558 825 500 Query line: 01558 825 503Website: www.cygnusreview.com Email: [email protected] ‘The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never overcome it. Know that this Light fills you and will

never leave you, whatever happens. Recognise that, in truth, it is you.’ – Ann Napier, The Song of Life Calendar 2015

This old Chinese story was chosen as one of his favourites by the great Argentinian

writer, Borges. It has a mystic power:It was the Hour of the Rat and the

Emperor was dreaming. He dreamt that it was a beautiful night—as indeed it was—and that he had decided to go for a walk. He had slipped out of the palace and was walking in the gardens beneath pleasantly scented trees.

All of a sudden he felt a weight on his feet. He looked down—and was not as alarmed as he would have been if he had been awake—to see a great green dragon prostrating itself at his feet, its head resting on his slippers. Was that tears on his slippers? he thought. Or was the dragon slavering all over them?

‘Please help me, your Highness,’ said the dragon. ‘I have come to ask a boon. The stars have told me that your Prime Minister will behead me before midnight tomorrow.’

The Emperor was flattered that this great dragon should ask for his help and he promised to give all the help he could. He awoke at dawn and summoned the Prime Minister. He did not want to command the Prime Minister not to behead a dragon—by any standards that would be an odd request and awkward to explain. Besides, the Emperor had come to depend on his Prime Minister and was perhaps a little afraid of him. So, instead he gave the Prime Minister a long list of administrative tasks, including some very tedious stocktaking that he knew would keep him busy indoors and take up the whole day, and he also invited the Prime Minister to join him for a game of chess in the evening.

Playing chess with the emPerorThe Prime Minister was already very tired out by his busy and very boring day when he arrived to play chess and the Emperor played an unusually cautious game to spin it out. He smiled to himself when, at about eleven o’clock, the Prime Minister nodded off. The minutes ticked away and midnight approached. Nearly there. What could possibly go wrong now?

Moments before midnight two soldiers burst into the Emperor’s room. They were carrying the bloodied head of a giant green dragon which they said had just fallen out of the sky and landed in the palace gardens.

The commotion awoke the Prime Minister. ‘That’s funny,’ he said. ‘I’ve just been dreaming that I was beheading a dragon like that.’

This story pleases us because of ‘the shock of recognition’. We know of no good reason to believe that it describes a real historical event—in fact that seems on the face of it fairly unlikely—but this story reminds us that we, too, have experienced dreams that seem to give us access to a higher reality, a reality that perhaps even influences the material reality we experience when awake.

‘Veridical dreams’ haVe changed history As I show in The Sacred History, people have always recorded dreams like these. And what we sometimes call ‘veridical dreams’ have sometimes changed the course of history in dramatic and surprising ways…

In the Old Testament Joseph was both a dreamer and an interpreter of dreams and the fortunes of his people depended on this. Healing dreams were often recorded at the shrine of the Greek god of healing, Asclepius, sited at Epidaurus, where the sick would go and stay overnight for the ‘healing sleep’. In one case onlookers saw a snake lick the toe of a sleeping man. In the morning when he awoke he found he was cured and it also turned out that he had had a dream of his toe being dressed in bandages by a god-like young man.

In esoteric circles the passage in Chapter Three of the Gospel of John, relating that Nicodemus came to Jesus by night, is said to mean that they were both initiates who met when asleep and out of their fleshly bodies. Then, following a dream in which Jesus Christ appeared to him, the Emperor Constantine famously decided to lead his army into a decisive battle that would unite

the Roman Empire. The Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne, founder of Europe, received instructions for his world-changing deeds in dreams, too, in his case from an Archangel.

Genevieve would become the patron saint of Paris after a dream showed her that Attila the Hun would not press home his advantage and take the city by force. It was because she was able to convince the people of Paris of her dream’s reality that the city was saved.

In the esoteric and mystical view of the cosmos human spirits have been dipped into matter and enclosed in material bodies that cut them off from other spirits. But while we are asleep our spirit may emerge temporarily and partially from our body and it is then that we dream. In dreams we may, to some extent, communicate with other spiritual beings, be they angels, the spirits of the dead or the spirits of living humans, as happened in the cases of Nicodemus or Genevieve.

From The Sacred History © 2014 by Jonathan Black published by Quercus (This article is continued on source.cygnusreview.com).

THE SACRED HISTORY Jonathan BlackThe Sacred History is an account of the workings of the supernatural in history. It tells the epic story of angels, from Creation to Evolution through to the operations of the supernatural in the modern world. This tale of how angels and other angelic beings have helped people and peoples is woven into a spellbinding narrative that brings together Krishna, Moses, Buddha, Elijah, Mary and Jesus, Mohammed, Joan of Arc, the angels who helped Hungarian Jews persecuted by the Nazis and stories from African, Native American and Celtic traditions. Told from the spiritual point of view, The Sacred History relates every betrayal, every change of heart, every twist and turn, everything that looks like a coincidence, every portent, every clue, every defeat, every rescue moments before the prison door clangs shut. This is the angelic version of events.

BURNOUT TO BRILLIANCEJayne Morris

Overwhelmed by the fast-paced and technologically demanding world in which we live, it’s all too easy to find ourselves running on reserve and forcing ourselves to accept that constantly feeling tired is all part and parcel of living a busy and connected life. But if we ignore the warning signs of an impending burnout, the eventual outcome can be devastating.

In this high-octane guide to transforming your life into a delight rather than a struggle, Morris outlines how she, herself, moved from exhaustion to success and takes you on a journey of self-discovery to awaken you to a brilliantly renewed life. You will learn how to identify the signs and symptoms of burnout and transform them in order to recover your energy and enthusiasm. Regain your power, passion and purpose!

E2 (E-SQUARED)Pam Grout

This could best be described as a lab manual with simple experiments to prove once and for all that reality is malleable, that consciousness trumps matter and that you shape your life with your mind! Rather than take it on faith, you are invited to conduct nine 48-hour experiments to prove there really is a positive, loving, totally hip force in the universe. This invisible energy force, or Field of Infinite Possibilities (FIP) can be relied on to work on our behalf in a huge variety of ways and we can learn to tap into this power consciously. Writing with wit, warmth and an absolute determination to help us alter our limited ways of thinking, Pam Grout invites us to prove to ourselves that the universe is limitless, abundant, and strangely accommodating!

Maria Reece Getting To The Root of The Matter

Maria trained as a psychotherapist 20 years ago, as much to help deal with her own pain and unhappiness as to help others. Psychotherapy did help her and her clients to understand their behaviours but it did not fully heal the deep pain and unhappiness within. She describes the deeper healing that changed her life.

My search to find effective ways to heal led me to explore many of the

avenues that you, too, may well have taken on your own path. These included spiritual practices, such as working with A Course in Miracles. I learnt to contact my higher self and started the process of shifting at a deeper level and I was able to blend what I had learnt into my therapy practice.

Even so, I knew intuitively that there was more to address. As we unravel one layer of the onion, another will be found underneath. Spiritual work is a life’s journey and even when you have found the happiness you seek, there may still be more challenges ahead to expand your soul’s capacity for service and love.

I found the pivotal next stage of my journey at the Cotswold Healing Retreat run by Louisa Crisp, some of whose

dramatic experiences as a healer are detailed in A Memory Returned which she wrote under the pen-name of Anna Delves.

Nobody could have been more shocked than me when, within an hour of working with Louisa, I found myself re-experiencing a root past life—one where a deep problem had its original source. This left me shaken and utterly convinced of its essential truth because of the power of the feelings it brought up.

As a psychotherapist, I was very much used to working deeply on myself and clients. This, however, was nothing like I had ever experienced before. Louisa took me back to the moment on the planet when we all became individually conscious for the first time. The emotions we experienced at that time are all root emotions and have been repeated throughout every single life we have had since then. As I released those roots I was miraculously able to forgive everyone who had ever hurt me, including many family and friends around me now and to understand that, in essence, there was nothing to forgive. Forgiveness, of course, does not mean to condone the other’s actions but to release the power they have over you. It is the most powerful way of setting yourself free.

I started to change dramatically and exceptionally quickly feeling happy, balanced and peaceful and my outer world began to change, too, as it reflected my inner transformation.

These new realisations led me to start integrating past life work into my psychotherapy. This happened naturally, without the traditional regression or

hypnotherapy work but by simply asking clients when they felt a particular issue had started or if they had any images come to mind that reflected it. In recent years I have done this uniquely effective work with many clients. I have never advertised it; I simply attract clients who are ready to work in this way.

With the knowledge and experience I have developed over the last few years, I can take people swiftly and effectively from the very beginning of their journey, maybe dealing with stress and depression in this life, right the way through to the process of releasing the negative beliefs and emotions from their core past lives.

Many of us have unconsciously carried into this life the belief that we will suffer. We can—and will—create that suffering for ourselves, just by holding on to those beliefs. By helping the person connect to the first time the problem occurred, they can release the thoughts and emotions connected to it and therefore stop recreating the suffering.

With others, as with me, this release can often change both the internal world and external reality. In the past if a client came with a problem, such as an ex-partner who refused to stop making trouble, I could only have helped them manage it. When we change, the people around us must either also change or move away. With the release of the root cause of an issue, the ex-partner’s compulsion may also drop away.

I wonder how many other practitioners have developed similar techniques?

FROM CHRYSALIS TO BUTTERFLYAnna Delves

The remarkable true story of Anna’s growth as a healer and medium and her discovery that major events which occurred in past lives can have a profound effect on our current lives. Anna discovered that she had the ability to heal, becoming aware that she had lived before and that many people involved in her past lives were around her again in her current life. She developed the ability to interpret her own past and present life situations and then found that she could do the same for others. Her book includes inspiring stories of deep healing, many of which have been truly life-changing. Her clients attest to her ability in enabling them to heal and transform, to find real purpose for their lives and to live at ease with themselves at last.

A MEMORY RETURNEDAnna Delves

When Anna’s eldest son died in an accident in 2008, she could never have imagined what would arise from her tragic loss. Her spellbinding story unfolds from the days that Anna spent communicating with her unconscious son as he lay dying in hospital where she began to receive life-changing revelations from him from the ‘other side’. They gave Anna the gift to heal at the very deepest level. After his

death she was directed to go to Machu Picchu without knowing why, except that it served the highest good. What unfolded in Peru was beyond even her expectations and brings her book to an astonishing conclusion. Its insights offer the blessing of profound personal healing that opens up the path to living a life open to the ‘flow’ consciousness in the now.

GARDENING AND PLANTING BY THE MOONNick Kollerstrom

Nick Kollerstrom’s annual handy guide provides details of the major lunar cycles for October 2014 to December 2015, along with evidence of how and why they affect plant growth, plus a good deal of organic gardening know-how to help you get superior results. New to this issue is a tribute to Maria Thun, the mother of lunar agriculture, which she developed for nearly 50 years based on Rudolf Steiner’s ideas. He assesses her work, especially her advice on when to open wine.

15The presence of those seeking the truth is infinitely to be preferred to the presence of those who think they’ve found it.—Sir Terry Pratchett

ARCHETYPAL IMAGERY AND THE SPIRITUAL SELFAnnabelle Nelson

Imagery can change brain physiology to increase health but it can also open the unconscious to insight from the Spirit self. Combining psychology and spirituality, this book considers archetypes from Asian, Middle Eastern and European myths and explains how they can be used in therapeutic practice to help clients achieve personal or clinical goals. Combining foundational psychological theories, brain physiology and Hindu philosophy with the author’s own visionary experiences, Archetypal Imagery explains how to use this technique in clinical practice. It also includes case studies, engaging images, practical exercises and quizzes for use with clients. Spiritual seekers, counsellors, coaches, psychologists, psychotherapists, arts therapists and other therapeutic practitioners will find the book’s insights a great complement to their practice, helping them to guide their clients to emotional health and spiritual awareness.

EMBRACING THE POWER OF TRUTHShavasti

A profound, partly biographical book about healing the separated self by a spiritual teacher who believed he understood the full meaning and value of life until an armed robber put a gun to his head. The experience catapulted Shavasti into a Hero’s Journey through anger, hatred and heartbreak until he found a far deeper layer of truth within.

Powerfully written by someone who owns up to all the pitfalls, illusions and delusions of believing he was working fully from the heart rather than from his mind, Embracing the Power of Truth will help you dissolve your own blocks to the deep inner joy of connection with All. Includes simple surrendering strategies and guidance on how to use the wounds we have gathered throughout our life as our teachers rather than excuses to stay trapped in an unfulfilling life.

BE YOUR OWN ASTROLOGERJoanna Watter

It’s unusual for a beginner’s astrology book to contain anything that might make a professional astrologer sit up and take notice but Joanna’s elegant guide to being your own astrologer does just that. Her observations on the lack of a certain element in a chart (earth, water, air, fire) are spot-on and demonstrate that this is not

a run-of-the-mill ‘cast your own chart’ guide. Learning your own astrology is always more complicated than people imagine but Joanne has presented the clearest pathway to astrological self-knowledge. Even with just a downloaded chart from the internet and no prior knowledge, the reader will have hours of fun with this book and learn many important new insights into their life.

It’s been some time since we last heard from our members with chat page

entries and we’ve truly missed receiving them. Whilst we have been collating the information and your comments from the recent questionnaires we sent out it has become apparent that many of you wish the chat page to expand to cover more life stories, letters, pictures and feedback from the Cygnus Cafés as well as your wonderful poems. We would love to receive your contributions and invite you to send them into us or email [email protected]

Here are some of the comments we received regarding how Cygnus helps most in your lives along with some suggestions, too:

Helps me feel connected when I don’t know anybody locally who is spiritually aware. —Gill.

More articles on mind, body and soul/wellbeing events in the UK please (a what’s on of sorts?) and maybe a ‘meet the maker’ article on artists/therapists/practitioners or even on a willing Cygnus reader to write on what Cygnus and it’s books mean to them…? Just a few thoughts! Thank you. —Sarah.

Provides opportunities for reflection, often cheers me, gives me hope, makes me feel connected to the wonder cosmos—offers great supportive tips/stories/food for thought. —Sarah.

It helps me in that it gives new insights on subjects I hadn’t thought of before. A real inspiration for me to see different viewpoints and makes me think in a way that ‘makes me think’. Thank you. —Wendy.

Just great to read the book reviews and to communicate with others travelling on the same journey with the same degree of curiosity and interest. And of course to be able to have bought and read the books you chose for all your readers at a reduced price. —Sally.

It allows me to feel that I’m not alone in my journey—though it would be lovely to meet others on the same - or different path! —Jane.

It is inspiring, relaxing and helps me feel part of a community that is evolving and growing together. —Charmaine.

It brings to my notice books I would not otherwise know about. They are all inspiring and most months have something in the review which helps directly with the issues occurring at that time. The reviews bring a sense of ‘community’, a connection to others who also love to explore and develop the spiritual, ‘inner’ side of life. I look forward to receiving it every month with anticipation. It is the first thing I open when it arrives. I do hope you will recover and be able to publish them again in some form. —Wendy.

By reminding me what is important in life when things get fraught and out of perspective; by reminding that there are many other souls who have similar views and experiences to mine; by giving me hope when the news media do their best to induce fear and uncertainty. I don’t think I could do without you now. —Jill.

It helped me most when I first became interested in spiritual growth some years ago and needed to find the books which would help me. There was always at least one thing that I really needed in any book that I

read. Thank you. Also the articles were just wonderful—I relished them. —Liz.

Informs me of new books that I wouldn’t hear about otherwise, also keeps me in touch with the wider Spiritual community that has grown up around Cygnus. A great source of inspiration and I take delight in reading the review and just love to receive books that I order. These books have contributed to a wonderful personal library that I share with many of my friends. Both for myself and others these books have often proved life changing, life enhancing and enriching. —Pam.

It keeps me in touch with those whose opinions, views and information keep challenging me to think outside the box of traditional beliefs. An extension of this would be to actually meet and talk with those whose views and opinions I have the utmost respect for. —Anthony.

It keeps me in touch with all kinds of thinking in the spiritual way and has opened my eyes to so much that I would, otherwise, have been unaware of. It has led a friend and me into explorations through your books, that have been valuable to us. —Sue.

I take the time to think about what is truly important in life and it is interesting to read about others’ experiences and perspectives on life. —Sheila.

It was through a fellow Cygnus reader that I discovered a wonderful resource that I’d like to share with everyone else. It’s called Silent Unity and it’s a non-denominational prayer line. It gives you such hope and wonderful results, too. So if you are looking for healing or know someone in trouble do visit www.unity.org/prayer. —Sarah.

The Gel is a unique blend of cesium chloride and homeopathic medicines that for over thirty years has been proven to heal and rejuvenate skin tissue. A product of Eastern wisdom and Western science, The Gel works like acupuncture, stimulating the nervous system at the area of application to initiate a healing response and thus promoting cellular regeneration at a molecular level. When applied daily on the face, The Gel significantly improves the condition and tone of the skin.www.gagnontherapies.com
