CYMIC boilers- Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB)

combustion technologyCo-combustion of different fuel types

High fuel flexibility is the foremost ad-vantage offered by the CYMIC boilers. They are designed to combust fuelsranging from 100% coal to 100% bio-mass and any combination in between. Most of the CYMIC  boiler references

are multifuel cases, often co-combust-ing fossil fuel (coal, pet coke) withbiomass.

The CFB process provides excellentemission control achieved through aconstant and relatively low combustiontemperature. NOX emissions can furtherbe reduced by ammonia injection intothe cyclone inlet. Desulfurisation withlimestone injection into the furnace en-ables the combustion of high sulfur fuels

with low SO2 emissions, and limestoneconsumption can be further reduced byinstalling a scrubber after the boiler.

Co-combustion of coal and biomassprovides several advantages.

In comparison to coal combustionLower net CO2 emissionLower limestone consumption

In comparison to biomass combustionLower potential for high tempera-ture corrosionNo bed agglomerationStabilises combustion conditionsfor diffi cult-to-feed fuels (enhancedemission performance)

Multifuel operation also increases opera-tion reliability and keeps fuel costs downby offering several fuel alternatives.

Stricter emission limits and

a wide range of low-grade

fuels drive the development

of Circulating Fluidized Bed

(CFB) technology. Metso Power

has dedicated its research and

development to this area, and

is today a forerunner in CFB

development.

Today’s most advanced

CFB design originates from

industrial applications, andfeatures high controllability

and reliability. It fulfils the

power generation segment’s

demands for less expensive

emission control and lower

lifecycle costs.

Metso Power’s CFB boiler iscalled CYMIC.

Bed Ash Cooler (BAC)

An integrated bottom ash cooler is usedwith high-ash and/or high-sulfur fuel, when large amounts of bed ash must beremoved. The bed ash is cooled down to200°C to minimise heat loss. The BAC de-sign is integrated with the boiler furnace,

by a water-cooled membrane wall.

Loop seal superheater

In the CFB process superheater sur-faces can be positioned immersed inthe boiler bed material. A loop seal su-perheater is used in order to protect thesuperheater surface against corrosion orto provide additional heating surfacein case of a high steam temperaturerequirement.

CFB development drivers:

Lower lifecycle costHigh reliability, less maintenanceAdvanced components:

Membrane wall cyclonesIntegrated Bed Ash Cooler (BAC)Loop seal superheater

High-effi ciency cyclones

Cyclone design is the heart of the CFBprocess. The CYMIC boiler design isbased on standard cyclone and loopseal components, both of which featureeither water or steam cooled membranewall design. Membrane cyclones haveseveral benefits like keeping the amountof refractory very reasonable, smallerheat losses and allowing a reductionin size of the other surfaces while par-

ticipating in heat transfer. CYMIC

boilercyclones feature a round shape andhigh effi ciency. The cyclone design usedin the CYMIC boilers provides excellentseparation effi ciency in al l boiler sizes.
