Better get ready, cause we’re going to have a lot of fun this season! it’s my pleasure to invite you to be a part

of an exciting SoST season, hoping you’ll renew your subscription early and share what we’ve got in store. We’ve entitled the season “Musical Spirits, Czars, the Wizard and the Common Man”. While that title sounds a little crazy, let me explain why!

Symphonic music, like other classics, has its titans who rise above the rest. ours are a few of my favorites, Shostakovich, Beethoven, Elgar, and my favorite American composer, Aaron Copland. Among the great sym-phonies you’ll hear will be Shostakovich’s epic fi fth, Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto for piano, performed by our good friend Phillipe Bianconi, and Aaron Copland’s third symphony. You might remember our performance of Copland’s famous Fanfare for the Common Man, performed last year; his symphony is built around that powerful theme. So many enjoyed Ed-ward Elgar’s Enigma Variations, well his cello concerto displays all of the elegance of that symphonic piece, especially in the hands of our soloist, Julian Schwartz. of course, there’s so much more you’ll want to hear.

Pops concerts are meant to kick off your shoes and just let us entertain you-just have fun. our fi rst concert will be with a group of guys who will rock the Julie Rogers with their renditions of Elton John and Billy Joel- a program we’re calling The Piano Man meets the Rocket Man. having worked with these men before, i can assure you a great eve-ning of memories with great tunes. Then, with three clicks of your ruby slippers, Dorothy, Toto and the entire cast from this famous movie will accompany your SoST in the movie/symphony version of The Wizard of Oz! A fi rst for Southeast Texas we know you’ll enjoy.

it gives me great pleasure to know that our subscription sales continue to increase- more and more renew each season, and invite their friends.i know the staff is ready to renew your favorite seat and help you sharethis 67th season of great music with us. As we’re fond to say, without agreat audience, it’s just another rehearsal- so let us hear from you so that together we can make it eight great concerts. Thanks for your loyal support and see you soon.

Musically yours,

Chelsea Tipton II, Music Director

The Power of 5!There’s something about fifths in musical literature. So many composers are recognized after writing their fifth symphony or concerto, including Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, Mendelssohn, Mahler, Beethoven and Shostakovich. This concert features two of those titans-Beethoven’s Emperor or fifth piano concerto and Shosta-kovich’s fifth symphony.

Phillipe Bianconi, a perennial favorite of Beaumont audiences, will return to treat our audiences with his majestic playing. Prize winner of the famed Van Cliburn Piano Competition, Bianconi’s treatment of Beethoven’s melodies brings the music alive with color and passion, all through technical wizardry.

Shostakovich’s fifth packs a powerful political statement. Come hear the variety of emotions through the composer’s masterful scoring! A powerful concert to launch a phenomenal season.

isn’t it funny how classic songs become monikers for artists? Billy Joel launched his career through the autobiographical, “The Piano Man”. The same can be said of Sir Elton John-a career that has skyrocketed on the basis of his creative writing, masterful piano playing and sheer genius of musical variety.

Jeans ‘n Classics, a musical troupe who tour the world, present their interpretations of music by legendary artists. Come hear the songs of Joel and John, presented by Jean Meilleur and John Re-gan, with their band and singers. With hits such as “Movin’ out,” “Tiny Dancer,” “Circle of life,” and other great Joel and John songs, accompanied by your SoST, it will be an evening that will help you “Remember when Rock was Young.”

our musical spirits come to life with the music of Rossini, Mozart and Vaughn Williams. hear how Mozart’s impressions live on in Rossini’s Barber of Seville Overture, based on the central character of Figaro from the opera bearing his name! one of Mozart’s final symphonies, number 39, reveals the amazing example his music had on future generations of composers.

Carrying on the tradition, Maestro Tipton has asked Whitney Bullock, Principal Violist, to round out our concert with Vaughn Williams’ beautiful folk song Suite for Viola and Orchestra, traditionally displaying the breadth of virtuosity of our symphony musicians.

Capture the romantic spirit with this concert of romantic classics. Toast to the spirit of Brahms’ Academic Festive Overture, an overture written to honor his honorary doctorate degree. A combination of four student songs, the piece includes a treatment that celebrates life. our concert tonight also features the Fauré Requiem, originally programmed last season, yet unfortunately postponed due to the sudden death of SoST veteran violinist, Yu Gu. We embrace all emotions and conclude this romantic concert with the Romantic Symphony of howard hanson. A picturesque symphony that depicts mountains and oceans which beautifully express hanson’s love of nature.

Spirit captures this season’s music in its many forms. our fi nal concert displays this variety in the upbeat themes of Glinka’s Overture to Ruslan and Ludmilla, then to the deep soul-searching mood of Elgar’s Cello concerto. Cellist Julian Schwarz’s masterful technique wonderfully captures the many somber moods of this masterpiece through the many hues of color only a cello can portray. Then we celebrate the human spirit to a victorious fi nale with Copland’s rousing Third Symphony.
