Czech is a Slavonic language, largely mutuallycomprehensible with Slovak and spoken byapproximately 11 million native speakers.Hungarian, spoken by approximately 13 millionnative speakers worldwide, is a member of theUralic language family. This programme offers theopportunity to gain excellent language skills and aprofound knowledge of Czech and Hungarianliterature, history and culture that will prepare youfor a wide variety of careers in Europe.

Degree structure

In each year of your degree you will take a number of individual modules,normally valued at 15 or 30 credits, adding up to a total of 120 credits forthe year. Modules are assessed in the academic year in which they aretaken. The balance of compulsory and optional modules varies fromprogramme to programme and year to year. A 30-credit module isconsidered equivalent to 15 credits in the European Credit TransferSystem (ECTS).

Your degree will train you to the highest level of proficiency in speaking,writing and understanding in your chosen languages.. As you progressthrough the degree, compulsory language modules are tailored to yourexisting knowledge. You will also take compulsory modules on literatureand culture.

Your third year is spent abroad, split between two countries where yourchosen languages are spoken. This will not only bring the language andcultures you are studying to life, but also strengthen yourresourcefulness and self-reliance. You will normally spend this yearstudying at a university in your chosen countries, but alternatives, suchas work placements, may be possible.

Your learning

We have dedicated resources for language teaching, includingtechnological support through computer-aided language learningfacilities, video and DVD materials, and the Internet. The methods we willuse to teach and assess you are varied, to ensure that they are bestsuited to the knowledge and skills being imparted or measured.

AssessmentAssessment will include written, oral and aural examinations,presentations, extended essays and a dissertation.

Your career

The programme is designed to equip you with language fluency, culturalcompetence, historical knowledge and social understanding. Your abilityto consider issues from an international perspective will be greatlyenhanced and you will learn how to conduct research and tocommunicate effectively both orally and in writing.

With developed skills in critical reasoning, independent thinking andapplication of theoretical concepts you will be strongly placed to findemployment in international organisations, particularly careers whichcross international boundaries and use languages. Career prospects arelikely to include finance, media, diplomacy, education, translation,research, and consultancy.

Your application

Application for admission should be made through UCAS (theUniversities and Colleges Admissions Service). Applicants currently atschool or college will be provided with advice on the process; however,applicants who have left school or who are based outside the UnitedKingdom may obtain information directly from UCAS.

We will be particularly interested in your motivation for choosing thisprogramme. In addition to academic requirements, you shoulddemonstrate an aptitude for and interest in language study, and relate tous how your interest in Eastern Europe was initiated. Literature, historyand culture are key elements of the degree, and your interest in andexperience of these fields of study are important.

Entry requirements

A LEVELSStandard Offer: ABB.

Contextual Offer: BBB. No specific subjects.

GCSEEnglish Language at grade B or 6, plus Mathematics at grade C or 5. ForUK-based students, a grade C or 5 or equivalent in a foreign language(other than Ancient Greek, Biblical Hebrew or Latin) is required. IB DIPLOMAStandard Offer: 34 points. A score of 16 points in three higher levelsubjects, with no score below 5.

Contextual Offer: 32 points. A score of 15 points in three higher levelsubjects, with no score below 5.
