2ND VP POSTBY SOROR CARIN BOYD

Greetings Sorors!

Autumn is officially here! As the daysget shorter and the nights colder, andthe leaves on the trees begin totransition from green to gold, we arereminded of the constant state ofchange. Although we have beendealing with the COVID-19 pandemic forseveral months now, in many respects,we are just now realizing how great ofan impact it has on our personal andprofessional lives and our means ofconducting sorority business. I wouldlike to thank you for your patience, understanding and your ability to adaptto the changes to how we conduct thebusiness of the sorority. It hasn’t beeneasy and we’ve definitely had somechallenges. I would especially like tothank our IT Committee who has madethemselves available to many of us towalk us through the changes.

There have been some long days andlate nights and they have beenavailable, PLEASANT, and extremelypatient. They have been instrumentalduring this transition from in-person tovirtual. I would also like to thank thecommittee chairs in advance for all ofthe great and impactful programmingwe will continue to provide for ourcommunities while following therecommendations from Gov. DeWine, the Ohio Health Department, DeltaSigma Theta and other governingofficials regarding operating during theCOVID-19 pandemic.

As we continue to honor our commitmentto Matthew 25: Ministries for pill bottledonations and our Memorandum ofUnderstanding with the MontgomeryCounty and Wilberforce AlumnaeChapters, we have established two dropoff dates for pill bottles: Wednesday,September 29 at 5 pm and Tuesday,October 27 at 5 pm. If you have bottles todrop off, please call or text Soror PeggyWynn at 937-477-8482 to arrange to dropthe bottles off at Storage of America inTrotwood at one of the days/timesprovided. As a reminder, Matthew 25:Ministries accepts large and smallprescription and over-the-counterpill bottles, as well as bottles withoutsecure caps (child-resistant). Please remove labels, leaving noglue or residue, wash bottles in veryhot water and dish soap, and rinseand dry thoroughly. Replace lids onclean, dried bottles. Place clean, recapped bottles in large ziplockbags marked “Clean Bottles.” Pillbottles that are deemed notappropriate to include withshipments of medical supplies willbe recycled and may generaterevenue that supports Matthew 25:Ministries’ programs.

In closing, on September 18, 2020, we lostthe most prominent member of theSupreme Court of the United States,Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Serving 27years on the Supreme Court, she was atireless and resolute champion of justice. Her passing will have profoundconsequences for the court and thecountry.

The sudden vacancy on theSupreme Court is yet anotherreminder of how quickly things canchange and how we must be ableto adapt and press on. Thenomination and confirmation of herreplacement will likely be an uphillbattle, but, we have to do what wemust in order to ensure fairnessand transparency in this process. WE HAVE WORK TO DO!!!

SOCIAL ACTIONBY SOROR LILLIAN DRAKEFORD

Greetings Sorors! The Social Action Committee continues to be engaged and growing! We welcome all new members astime for social action has never been greater than it is right now, at least in recent history. We continue tomeet weekly to plan and strategize.

Because of COVID-19 and the push to limit chapter -sponsored undertakings to virtual activities, we areasking all sorors to visit the DAC FB page regularly for postings related to voter information and sharethose posts on their own timelines and other mediums. We’d like to flood FB with voter informationprovided by DAC every Wednesday from now until the election. If at all possible, please post between2:00- 3:00 p.m. If this time is not convenient, feel free post anytime, any day of the week, as often as youlike.

We encourage all sorors who participated in the voter registration phone bank training by the Ohio UnityCoalition to continue making those calls. Almost 15 DAC sorors have been trained.

Upcoming virtual event to place on your calendar are:NAACP Candidates’ Forum – Sept. 28th — 6:456 PM. Details are forthcoming.

We also continue to support the collaborative effort of the Yes, You Can Vote Community ViterRegistration Outreach. The organizations involved include: the Montgomery County Reentry, MontgomeryCommunity Action, Montgomery County Public Defender’s Office, and Central State University,Cooperative Extension Service. Most of the virtual media resources we have been fortunate to share withthe DAC as well as the public grew out of this collaboration. Most recently, individual sorors canvassed theDesota Bass Homes and the provided voter registration information at the Black Wall Street event at CSUDayton. Almost 70 citizens were registered or received absentee ballot applications this past weekendalone. This effort along with the work of individual sorors during the summer have resulted in 114 citizensregistering to vote and 158 absentee ballot applications completed/distributed.

Sorors, while we cannot spearhead face-to face activities as a chapter, each of us can support voterregistration activities in the community as concerned citizens and socially responsible individuals. Theneed in the Black community to register and encourage our people to vote is dire. We cannot afford to sitthis election out! We encourage everyone to take it upon themselves to find their niche and safely dowhatever they can to get out the vote.

In order to promote volunteerism and individual effort, the Social Action committee will begin spotlightingsorors weekly who are doing creative things to get out the vote on their own! Spotlighted this week is:

Soror Joyce WillisSoror Willis teamed up with a neighbor to get out the vote! They canvassed Shakespeare Avenue andLexington Avenue from Philadelphia Drive to Wesleyan Road which is approximately five blocks. They planto return to those addresses/homes to assure that the residents understand the process. They are alsopreparing door hanger reminders that they plan to leave at these same locations several days prior toNov.3rd so that residents remember to mail ordrop off their ballots or go vote in person!

Please, let us know what you’re doing! Email Soror Drakeford ([email protected] or Soror Gaston([email protected]).

No one can do everything, but everybody can do something! Social action is what we do, and we’ve gotwork to do!

Confused about Absentee Voting in Ohio? Here Are the Facts!

Absentee Voting in Ohio

Election Day is Nov. 3. Ohio registered voters can vote early by mail or in person at theircounty boar of elections beginning on October 6. Here is how to do it.

1. Register to vote and verify your registration and address at VoteOhio.gov or at the countyboard of elections. The signature you use when you register will be used during everyelection to verify your identity. Deadline: Oct 5.

2. Complete an absentee ballot application, sign it and mail it or hand deliver it to yourcounty board of elections as soon as possible. The forms are available at board offices andVoteOhio.gov. Deadline: October 31, but election officials say waiting until then may notallow enough time for your ballot to be counted.

3. Your county board will send you an absentee ballot, an inside identifying envelope and anouter envelope. Provide identifying information, including birth date and driver’s licensenumber or the last four digits or your Social Security number. Sign and date the insideenvelope. Follow the direction and provide an email or phone number so you can becontacted and correct mistakes.

4. Fill out the ballot by using a black ink to completely darken the oval. Do not tear off theballot stub. Do not vote for more candidates than permitted in a race. If you make a mistake, you must return the ballot to the board of elections and get a new one. Mail with correctpostage or drop off the ballot at your board of elections. Deadline: Postmarked by Nov 2 ordelivered to the board of elections in person by 7:30 p.m. November 3.

5. When your ballot arrives at the board of elections, the inner envelope will be removed, and staff will verify your identifying information and signature. Then the ballot is removed, face down from the envelope and its identifying stub is detached before the ballot isflattened to prepare for scanning. Verify your ballot was received at VoteOhio.gov/Track.

6. Absentee ballots are run through high speed scanners before Election Day and votes aretabulated once the polls close. Staff do not look at ballots before identifying information isremoved so any mistakes made on the ballot, such as failure to properly fill in the oval, cannot be corrected by the voter and could result in certain races or the whole ballot notcounting.
