Putting Knowledge into PracticeThe Physics 5 series includes an initial lecture course, Physics 5A, followed by two additional lectures, 5B and 5C, along with new laboratory courses, Physics 5BL and 5CL. The new labs give freshmen and sophomores direct, applied experience in conducting physics experiments, collecting quantitative data, and analyzing results.

Compared to worksheet-based labs used in the past, the Physics 5 labs better position students for participation in research as undergraduates. Help Build the Physics 5 LabThank you for considering a gift to the Physics 5 Lab. Your gift of any size makes a difference. Or consider the naming options below. A brand new lab space is scheduled to be completed for 5BL by Fall 2017, and for 5CL by Spring 2018!

$5,000: Donor WallDonations of $5,000 or more will be recognized on a Donor Wall in the Physics 5 Laboratory in Birge Hall.

$25,000: Work StationsA plaque installed at each named work station will recognize the donor and honoree. Work stations incorporate state-of-the-art data acquisition equipment, including computers, as well as space for collaborative projects.

$50,000: Laboratory ExperimentsA plaque installed next to an experiment will recognize the donor and honoree during the years the named experiment is in use. Some experiments are considered permanent, others semi-permanent, and will be updated or replaced as needed.

$100,000 and up: Endowment FundsEndowments provide continuing support by funding the ongoing creation and updates of experiments and maintenance of equip-ment. Named Endowments exist in perpetuity and will be recognized on the Donor Wall.

$250,000: One Side of the Physics 5 LaboratoryThe Physics 5 Laboratory is divided into two sections: Mechanics and Electromagnetism on one side; Thermal and Modern Physics on the other side. Either side can be named for a person or organization.

$750,000: Both Sides of the Physics 5 LaboratoryThe entire Physics 5 Laboratory can be named for a person or organization.

“Physics 5's challenging coursework especially rewards those who are passionate about exploring physics outside their comfort zone.”

—Zack Aristei, Freshman Physics 5 Student

“Physics 5BL has taught me how to fit data into models and how to interpret the results. I definitely think this is a skill that will help me both as a researcher and in the industry.”

—Namrata Ramesh,Freshman Physics 5 Student

Experiential Education Leads to Real-World SuccessLearning through immersion in hands-on experiences lies at the heart of Physics undergraduate education. As part of our effort to strengthen this approach, Berkeley Physics has launched the Physics 5 Series—a new laboratory-centered curriculum designed for freshmen and sophomores. Through team projects in Physics 5, students gain new lab skills and develop crucial analytical competence, beginning with the very first semester of their academic career.

Laying the Foundation for ExcellenceConstruction of a dedicated laboratory facility for Physics 5BL and 5CL is now underway. A group of world-class faculty and instructors are designing the curriculum. Financial contributions are needed to support not only the new lab space and equipment, but also the curriculum development. You can play a vital role in further enrich-ing the high quality of instruction in the Physics Department by contributing to the Physics 5 Series.

You can contribute in a way that reflects your experience as a former student or as a friend of Berkeley Physics. Perhaps you'd like to see your name on a work station, in remembrance of hours spent in the lab during your student days. Maybe you'd enjoy seeing a classic Nobel prize-winning experiment dedicated to a former teacher or a dear friend.
