Some degree of personal in- I terpretation no doubt enters into my answers. But I try I always to be factual, reason- fable and responsible. Of course, our pioneer fore- fathers were deeply concem- | £d with Freedom as we their descendents had better I be. On the whole they made freedom their business and it’s up to us to keep that business going, and growing. Surely we can do that only j as we are mutually under- standing and caring; not ir- | responsible, lawless and de- structive; and not narrowly selfish, callous, contemptuous, unfair to unjust and there- fore irresponsible and “de- structive by degrees” of hu- ! man personality, and of liber- I ty and democracy. Freedom historically has not only been hard-won but hard-kept. Lib- erty, enlightenment, and re- sponsibility are necessary for the life of democracy. Evidently the great major- ity of Americans today be- lieve that a basic measure of Security is also important, along with our freedoms and liberties and in fact makes them more meaningful. But the need and desire for security are surely not new in American history. Natu- rally, in certain ways our forefathers were more inde- pendent and less inter-de- pendent than we. Mostly living on relatively isolated family farms, they produced nearly all of their own food, clothing, shelter, and other necessities of life. “By the sweat of their brows” they and their families literally made d liVlfig .\?f and "achiev- ed security as best they could. We in our largely indus- trialized and urbanized, spe- cialized and interdependent ‘money economy” don't real- ly make a living we buy it. In our jobs, businesses, and professions we work and earn money with which to buy our living. The problem of money, the well known medium of ex- change, is not new. We are told that the love of money is the root of all evil re- sponsible for so very much cruelty, suffering, strife and upheaval. But in these days, with the high-and-higher costs of living in this world, the lack of money is bad, too. For the most part we and our families have security so long as the earned money keeps coming. But when old age, disability, or death of the family breadwinner stops the money, the ordinary 20th century American family faces a real emergency and dilem- ma. At such a time, especially, there is a serious need for economic security. And it is primarily to help meet this need and this dilemma of our modern money economy that Social Security exists. 295 million telephone calls are made daily in the United States. f TO AND FROM BLACK MOUNTAIN STOP AT THE BONAIRE MOTEL U. Let’s talk about budgets! Budgeting is tough these days. It seems that every time you turn around the cost of something is going up. The economists tell us it’s to be expected. Maybe so, but it sure makes running a home difficult.

We wish we could tell you that A&P has the answer

to all your difficulties, but we can’t...no store can.

We can tell you this:

There is one guaranteed way to cut your food bill

without sacrificing quality; buy A&P’s own brands.

Hold it...don’t scoff...we’re serious.

We don’t have our own private national brands

just to have low prices. If it isn’t a quality product, it can’t carry the A&P Seal.

If you buy A&P Brands, we guarantee you’ll reduce your total food bill.
