D G 410 D NEWSLETTER

APRIL 2017

From the pen of our DG Zwaai……………...

April 2017

Fellow Lions

With the month of May on our doorstep, we need to strengthen our membership. Although I’ve not really ad-dressed membership this year, we need to remember that without members, there will be no organisation such as ours! And, on the 28th of April, it is Lions Worldwide Induction Day. Make use of this opportunity to strengthen our pride – I may be using the International President’s theme of a couple of years ago, but it remains apt till today and in the future.

Go out and get younger members, as we all are a dying breed – per PDG Bokkie… Here is at least some advice for him ↓

“No nursing home for us. We'll be checking into a City Lodge!

With the average cost for nursing home care being R1 800.00 per day, there is a better way when we get old and too feeble.

I've already checked on reservations at the City Lodge. For a combined long term stay discount and senior discount, it's R 500.00 per night. Breakfast is included, and some have happy hours in the afternoon. That leaves R 1 300.00 a day for lunch and dinner in any restaurant we want, or room service, laundry, gratuities and special TV movies. Plus, they provide a possible spa, swimming pool, a workout room, a lounge and washer-dryer, etc.

Most have free toothpaste and razors, and all have free shampoo and soap. R 50.00 worth of tips a day you'll have the entire staff scrambling to help you. They treat you like a customer, not a patient. There's a city bus stop out front, and seniors ride virtually for free. The handicap bus will also pick you up (if you fake a decent limp). To meet other nice people, call a church bus on Sundays. For a change of scenery, take the airport shuttle bus and eat at one of the nice restaurants there. While you're at the airport, fly somewhere. Otherwise, the cash keeps building up. It takes months to get into decent nursing homes. City Lodge will take your reservation today. And you're not stuck in one place forever - you can move from Lodge to Lodge, or even from city to city. Want to see Hawaii? They may have one there too.

TV broken? Light bulbs need changing? Need a mattress replaced? No problem… They fix every-thing, and apologize for the inconvenience. It has a night security person and daily room service.

The maid checks to see if you are ok. If not, they'll call an ambulance . . . or the undertaker. If you fall and break a hip, medical aid will pay for the hip, and City Lodge may upgrade you to a suite for the rest of your life. And no worries about visits from family. They will always be glad to find you, and probably check in for a few days mini-vacation. The grand-kids can use the pool. What more could I ask for? So, when I reach that golden age, I'll face it with a grin.”

May those who are attending the Convention, have an awesome time!

“There is no strength without passion”

“Hats off” to Lions Lady Antoinette Scott and Lion PJ Mauer for organis-

ing a well- attended and most enjoyable KWT Lions Crazy Hat Party at the

colourfully decorated Malcolm Andrew Sports Centre on Saturday 8th

April 2017. Approximately 80 members of the public – many of them old

supporters but a pleasing number of newcomers, too – and Lions, partners-

in-service and youngsters danced the night away to the toe-tapping tunes of

DJ Shane and enjoyed steak or boerewors rolls and plenty to drink at the

bar. There were prizes for the best and

most creative hats and a photo booth where that special memento picture could

be purchased to provide memories for years to come.

The evening started with the induction

by Lion Russell Volker of two new

members, Kristen Mauer and Wayne

Smith into the KWT Lions Club and

their proud families, fellow Lions and guests welcomed them into the

world’s largest service club organisation in its centenary year.

Lion PJ Mauer thanked those who sponsored prizes, the bread rolls and the venue for the evening. “Every cent of

the profit from these functions goes back to the community,” he said, “and the support from the community is

greatly appreciated.”

Manning Water Point April 2017

The chal-lenge to man the water point used for the local Ironman event speaks volumes for the approxi-mately 60 members, families and friends to render a ser-vice over the 18 hours period to the

approximately 1800 endurance athletes. The event Organisers expressed their appreciation for an excellent service provided by the Lions which was televised Internationally.

Centennial Challenge to all Lions in District 410D

DC JEANETTE LE ROUX has put this challenge out to all Clubs in the district and I

would love to have an overflowing newsletter in June 2017 which would be the last for DG

Zwaai’s year.

The 7th of June is the 100th anniversary of our Organisation and there is a Multiple-District challenge for each

club to join hands in the celebration on Saturday June the 10th taking up “Project 100” which is to arrange a ser-

vice project serving 100 disadvantaged in any form or fashion. This challenge was circulated via our District

Secretary some time ago with positive feedback from 5 clubs who will be participating. This article was also

included in our DG's March newsletter so I am hoping for more clubs to join hands and participate.

How great it would be to have each club in District D have a page on this service event in our DG's June News-

letter.

STILBAAI LIONS WOEKER FONDSE LOS

Still Bay Lions held the following two major fund raising projects during December 2016:

FOOD AND WINE FESTIVAL

This annual event which has been run-ning for over 20 years surpassed all ex-

pectations. Approximately 2300 people attended the Festival over 2 evenings which is an all-time record. Seventeen cellars exhibited their wines. The turno-ver exceeded R 250 000. The net profit

was R 65 000. The Lions and volun-teers - from entrance to dispatch of the sales – were complemented for running a well oiled, synchronized and friendly festival. In fact many proclaimed it to

be the best they had ever attended.

BEER TENT AT THE ANNUAL COASTAL TOUCHIES

(RUGBY) TOURNAMENT

Running the beer tent at this annual event is not for the faint hearted. It is viewed as the Royals Royce of the series of tournaments and the only one selling beer on the beach.

As part of Lions outreach two local organizations were drawn in as junior partners, ie Sea-gulls Rugby Club and Pikkewouter Creche.

In total 600 cases (24 x 450ml) of beer and related beverages were sold from 11:00 to 15:30 netting ±R 295 000. Both partners netted R 21 000.

The photos will tell the rest.
