    D-Link IP Surveillance and more

    This guide is all about

    what D-Link has to oer

    hose looking to take

    advantage of the latest

    digital IP Surveillance

    echnology. Whether its a

    new system or an upgra-

    de of an existing analo-

    gue setup, D-Link has

    everything you need -

    rom network cameras

    hrough to digital recor-

    ders and the monitoring,

    ecording and manage-

    ment software to go with

    hem. But thats not all,

    with over 27 years net-

    working experience,

    D-Link is uniquely posi-

    ioned to oer a compre-

    hensive selection of

    Ethernet switches, wire-

    ess access points, stora-

    ge, security and other

    upporting products.

    Everything, you might

need to build, not just a

    obust and eective IP

    Surveillance system, but

    a complete network of

    any size.

One of the most signicant advances

of recent years, IP Surveillan ce

    technology has revolutionised the

CCTV market, doing away with theneed for outdated analogue cameras,

    custom cabling and complex monito-

ring equipment. Using IP it becomes

    possible, instead, to build systems

    based on aordable network cameras

    designed to transmit digital video

    over ordinary wired and wireless

networks back to easy to use monito-

ring and recording software run on

    industry standard platforms.

As a world leader with over 25 years

    experience developing, deploying

    and supporting networks, D-Link is

ideally placed to take advantage of

these advances and to bring them to

a wider audience. It was one of the

rst to incorporate IP Surveillance into

its network portfolio, and over the

years it has built up an impressive

family of products to suit everyone

from the home user to large enterpri-

    se buyers.

D-Link has a full set of IP Surveillance

    products and more, including high

    resolution digital cameras for both

indoor and outdoor use; digital enco-

    ders to interface existing analogue

    cameras; network video recorders to

    securely store those recordings and

    the monitoring and management

    software to tie everything together.

Never one to rest on it s laurels, D-Link

continues to invest heavily in R&D, to

innovate and bring new features andtechnologies to market. Strict adhe-

    rence to industry standards also

    makes for simpler integration with

Wireless N Wi-Fi which is nowcommonplace on D-Link cameras, for

    example, plus Power over Ethernet

(PoE) for simpler, cheaper, discreteinstallation without the need for

    separate power lines.

    High denition, Megapixel camera

technology is, similarly, to be found

on the latest D-Link cameras, alongwith digital pan, tilt and zoom (PTZ)

    plus integrated 2-way sound capabili-

ties. Some cameras can also capture

video to local storage such asMicroSD card, adding another layer of

redundancy to the system and for

    backup and monitoring remote, out

    of the way, locations..

Because its digital, captured IP videocan be stored on hard disk rather thanold-fashioned video tape and feeds

    from multiple cameras monitored

using nothing more than a standard

desktop PC. And here, too, D-Linkleads the way with, in its latest

    products, support for automated

    picture analysis, osite monitoring

and storage plus alerting viasmartphones, tablets and other

    mobile devices.

    D-Link products are available through

an extensive network of resellers andspecialist partners, capable of provi-

ding everything from camerasthrough to the supporting wired or

wireless switches, routers and otherinfrastructure. They can also advise on

what to buy and how to deploy it, plus

    provide the training and support

needed to make it all work.

    Far from a one-size-ts-all approach,

D-Link and its partners oer a complete

joined up solution that can be

tailored to suit a wide range ofmarkets. Whether youre a small

    service company, a growing retail

business, a school, college or city

corporation - if its IP Surveillanceyoure after, D-Link and its partners can

deliver it, and deliver it all.

Migrating to IP SurveillanceMigrating to IP Surveillance

Still not convinced its time to make the move? Here are a few related questions and answers

    the performance of mydata network?

Can my data be interceptedand used for other purposes?

    Arent IP camerascomplicated to install?

    How can I safely monitor

    busy periods?

Will I need to switch to a

    and maintain my IP Surveillanceequipment?

Ive used a webcam andwasnt impressed with thequality, wont IP Surveillancebe the same?

    Migrating toIP Surveillance

    76

Not everyone will have the luxury of starting from scratch with a new

IP Surveillance system, so what if youre looking to update an existing

analogue CCTV setup? Some vendors will tell you to rip it all out - all

those cameras, expensive cabling and back-end monitoring equip-

ment - and start again, but thats not the D-Link way.

    D-Link understands the desire to

make the most of often very expen-

sive existing solutions that have yetto reach their sell-by date, and to

migrate from analogue CCTV to the

    latest IP Surveillance technologies at

    your own pace.

Yes, modern IP cameras have a lot

more to oer and are easier to

deploy, but where a customerwishes to integrate existing analo-

    gue hardware, D-Link sells

analogue-to-digital encoders -small boxes that plug into an analo-

gue camera at one end and the

    Ethernet network at the other.

D-Link digital encoders can be used

with the majority of analogue CCTV

cameras. eectively turning theminto network-ready IP devices.

    Support for Power over Ethernet

makes them easy to deploy plus

theres a built-in RS-485 interface foruse with external pan/tilt acces-

    sories, 2-way audio digital I/O

support plus an SD Card slot for local

    recording.

    Cameras connected using a digital

    encoder are fully compatible with

D-Link Network Video Recorders,D-ViewCam monitoring and recor-

    ding software and all supporting

    infrastructure products, enabling

you to migrate from analogue CCTVto IP Surveillance on your own

    terms.

One of the rst questions new custo-

mers ask is the impact IP Surveillancewill have on network performance.

    Fortunately, modern streaming

technologies such as H.264 can really

compress video data down to minimi-se the bandwidth required. Moreover,

    most network switches and routers

(such as those from D-Link) can be

congured to segregate and prioritisedierent types of trac using

    industry-standard Virtual LAN (VLAN)

and Quality of Service (QoS) technolo-gies. As a result, a properly implemen-

    ted IP Surveillance system should

    have minimal impact on existing

    network applications or their perfor-mance.

As with other network applications, IP

Surveillance products are engineeredto comply with industry-standard

network authentication and securitytechnologies. Using these, access to

    recordings can be strictly controlled

and audited. At the physical level too,its a lot harder to intercept digital than

analogue CCTV data, making IP Survei-

    llance inherently more secure, espe-

cially when using wireless to connectcameras to the network.

If anything, IP cameras are easier to

install than a conventional analogueCCTV camera, and quicker, especially if

Power over Ethernet (PoE) is used to

eliminate the need for a dedicated ACsupply. Whats more, with new

    breakthrough technologies, such as,

    Auto Surveillance VLAN (ASV), a

feature found in Smart Switches fromD-Link, switches supporting ASV

    enhance the existing infrastructure by

    automatically segmenting surveillance

data from general data. This results in anoptimised hybrid network that is quick

and easy to deploy, while capable of

handling both your data and surveillan-ce trac.

It is important that video feeds from

surveillance arent negatively aectedduring periods of busy trac conges-

tion. On networks with already heavy

trac loads, the approach has often been

to create a separate IP network infrastruc-ture explicitly dedicated to surveillance

trac. However, ASV changes all of this

by automatically detecting attachedsurveillance equipment to intelligently

segment surveillance trac to give it

high priority following quality of service

(QoS) standards. In this way, surveillancetrac can continue to stream video

smoothly and reliably, even during periods

of heavy data trac. When used in

conjunction with PoE, hardware installa-tion is simplied, and clutter is reduced

since power and data can be transferred

    over a single cable.

No - most specialist suppliers already oer

support for both analogue and IP Survei-

llance systems and are both willing andable to oer impartial advice on whats

best for your organisation. D-link products

are available through a network of appro-

ved resellers well versed in both analogue

    and digital solutions.

Professional IP cameras are a world

    apart from cheap webcams. HD-quality,

Megapixel cameras are now common-place along with low-light and infrared

    technologies to capture detailed, high

    resolution, images in varying light

conditions. High frame rates furtherhelp together with support for both

optical and digital zoom at the camera.

IP Surveillance the D-Link jargon busterA camera for any need

IP Surveillance the D-Link jargon busterNot sure what all the terms mean? Heres a short guide to helpunderstand the D-Link products and services discussed in this guide.

    Built-in IR

Digital EncoderA device to convert analogue videosignals to digital format and transmitthem over an IP network. Used to enableanalogue CCTV cameras to be integratedinto an IP Surveillance system.

    Digital input/output (DI/DO)

HD cameras capture a lot moredetail and are also able to cover a muchwider area than a standard VGA camera, giving good surveillance coverage withfewer cameras.

    Infrared Cut Filter

passing visible light. Usually removable(either manually or under softwarecontrol) to enhance daytime imageswhile also allowing the camera to beused at night.

    Megapixel

A generic term for cameras able to recordat high resolution, i.e. above a millionpixels. Analogue cameras are limited toaround 0.4 Megapixels whereas digitalIP cameras can capture images in muchhigher detail with 2 Megapixels andabove.

    Multicasting

The ability to send video to multiplemonitoring and recording stations witha single stream, saving bandwidth and

    P-iris

P-Iris is a precise iris control, thatoptimises the iris opening of the lensunder all lighting conditions resulting

in images with better contrast, clarity,

improved image sharpness andincreased image usability.

Network Video Recorder (NVR)An appliance or application designedto manage and record video streamsfrom IP Surveillance cameras. Thesewill, typically, record to hard disk withoptional copying to other media such asrecordable DVD and the cloud.

    Onboard SD Recording

The ability to record to media in the

removable SD card. Particularly useful forremote sites with no network, Wi-Fi or 3Gconnectivity and as a backup in case of anetwork failure.

    Open Network Video InterfaceForum (ONVIF)

An open industry forum, of which D-Linkis a member, for the development of aglobal standard for interfacing IP-basedphysical security products.

    Pan, Tilt, Zoom (PTZ)

The ability to remotely control a camerato pan (move from side to side), tilt(move up and down) and zoom in on aparticular area of interest.

Passive Infrared (PIR)PIR sensors measure infrared (IR) radiation

    detect movement.

    Power over Ethernet (PoE)

The ability to transmit power to a remoteIP camera over the data network. Thiseliminates the need for an independentmain power supply and an AC adapterthat might fail or be unplugged. WithPoE a central Uninterruptible PowerSupply (UPS) will also keep the camerasworking in the event of a power cut.

    Quality of Service (QoS)

On a shared network, bottlenecks canarise when surveillance video has to

compete for bandwidth with data, voice

implemented across the whole network,in switches and routers, as well as IP

    Surveillance cameras.

    Video Streaming

Encoding of captured video fortransmission over a data network. Anumber of encoding and compressiontechnologies can be applied here, themost popular being Motion JPEG, MPEG-4 and H.264. Of most interest at presentis H.264 which can optimise bandwidthand storage by up to 80% withoutcompromising on image quality.

    Wide Dynamic Range (WDR)

The ability of a camera to capture imagesin a wide range of lighting conditions.

and high levels of contrast wouldotherwise result in a poor picture, such asin doorways and next to windows.

Aordable cameras with a widerange of applications, xed cameras

are designed to be aimed at a specic

location, such as particular oce, a

reception area, shop counter etc.Mainly xed focus and for indoor use,

    some D-Link models have built-in

optical and digital zoom and can be

mounted in protective casings foroutdoor use. Others have built-in

protection against the elements, night and day capabilities and otheruseful features.

    Depending on the model, D-Link

xed network cameras can be moun-ted on walls or ceilings. All have a

    wired Ethernet interface and built-in

    Web server for remote management

as standard with wireless networkingas an option on some models.

More discrete than an ordinarynetwork camera, dome cameras are

    compact devices designed for ceiling

or pendant mounting inside a plastic

dome. The dome protects againsttampering/vandalism plus it makes it

hard to work out where the camera is

pointing so it acts as a deterrent over

a wide area.Dome cameras fromD-Link all come with Power over

Ethernet (PoE) support for simpleinstallation with many IP44/66 ratedfor outdoor use.

Motorised cameras that can bemoved around under software

control and zoomed to focus in on a

particular area or target, PTZ cameras

may be open or mounted inside aprotective dome. PTZ cameras can be

set to monitor large indoor or

    outdoor areas by continually swee-

ping or remotely controlled to followtargets as they move around.

Cameras that have a sheye lens to

    provide incredible wide angle coverage;

designed for a panoramic 180 view ofa room when mounted on a wall, or for

a full 360 view without blind spots

when placed on a ceiling. Distortion

correction xes the camera video touse ePTZ to zoom in, zoom out, and

pan across the cameras video and

    survey a large area easily.

Surveillance cameras come in a variety of guises - for use in homes, oces,

shops, warehouses and other more challenging environments; indoors andout; with and without remote control capabilities, weather and vandal pro-

tection and to suit a wide range of budgets. D-Link has them all

    Standard interfaces that enable a

    camera to communicate with external

sensors (e.g. door and window sensors)

    and alarm systems.

Video encoders are for customers looking to migrate a pre-existing

analogue CCTV system to IP rather than rip out and replace everything

they already have. Able to work with all the leading makes of camera,

the encoders take the analogue video camera output and digitise it for

network transmission using a choice of streaming protocols including

    the highly compressible H.264.

D-link encoders also feature 802.3af Power over Ethernet support for ease of deployment, plus they come with a built-in
