Tschicoma volcanic center

The .Jemez Mountains are situated on the western margin oft he Hio <~randt· rift at it!' in­tersection with the .Jt:>mez Lim!ament (Fig. I).

r:rupted products have been divided into three stratigraphic groups representing three succt:>s­l'in> periods of magmatic evolution and erup­tion (Bailey et al., IB69: Smith et al., 19i0 ). The proposed divisions MP the Keres (including t h<· Paliza Canyon Format ion), Polvadera ( inrlud· ing the T!<.chkoma Formation), and Tewa (pri­marily HandeliPT Tuff and post-caldera lava domes) Groups, in agl' sequence (Fig. 2 l. These volcanic and volcaniclastic deposits span the period 1 :u1 to 0.1 Ma I Gardner et al., 19RIJ).

These domec; form the El Rechuelos Hhyolite and Cerro Ruhio Quartz Latite 1 Fig. 2; Bailey et al., 1969), the latter se­qut:>n<'e more recently recognized as part of the Tsehicoma Formation (Gardner et al., 1986). The youngest El Rechuelol' Rhyolite lavas are di1<tinguished mineralogically and chemically from tht• "oldtor (Tschicoma I rhyolites" of Loeffler et al. ( 19AA), but are mineralogically similar to several tephra deposits in the upper Puye Formation. F.pklnstic material from this t'l'l\tt'f. hnWl'\"£•r. is poorly represented in Puye dPposit:- rlue t u topographic harriers existing at t h(' timl' of <•rupt ion of these domes.
