Central Elementary Items for the Good October 2020

Preschool In preschool, the children have been full of anticipation and excitement for Halloween! We take advantage of the children’s interest and plan meaningful, relevant activities to foster their learning. The children have been exploring pumpkins through a variety of activities. Some preschool classrooms learned the anatomy as well as the life-cycle of a pumpkin. We painted pictures of pumpkins and then painted on actual pumpkins! :) The kids have carved pumpkins, helped clean them out, and even ate the seeds that were collected. October is such a fun month for our littlest learners! Kindergarten In Kindergarten we have been learning all about weather and seasons. We are documenting weather to notice patterns and to understand how weather changes over time. In math, we have been learning all about numbers 1-10. The following are ways that we learned about these numbers.

● Finding a counting path for different arrangements, for example circular, linear and scattered arrangements

● Counting and matching that number of objects to the written numeral ● Ordering dot patterns and numbers in number order ● Decomposing numbers 1-10 by finding all the Hidden Partners for each number ● Arranging and drawing “one more” and “one less” to a given number up to 10 ● Counting up and down within 10

First Grade First graders have been learning all about sound! We learned about the pitch and volume of different sounds. Some sounds are pleasant and some are unpleasant. We experimented to find out that vibration is what causes sounds. Using that knowledge, we created sounds for a cartoon and then created our own instruments to perform in class! Then, we learned how bats are able to hear things at night using echolocation. We know what bats eat, where they live, and different sizes/colors bats can be. We are bat experts now! Second Grade In second grade, we have been working on our ideas, conventions and organization. The students got to complete a creative writing project where they had to write about a time their school was haunted or were frankenstein. They also got to write about leaves and fall and use descriptive language, pictures and ideas to come up with their creative stories!

Halloween Parade We had beautiful weather for our Halloween Parade! Many parents were able to enjoy the parade via our Wamego Central Elementary Facebook Live link.

Boys and Girls Club Little Apple Duck Dash a Success! Boys and Girls Club of Manhattan recently held their Little Apple Duck Dash and to help earn money for this event, we had a Principal Challenge! It was a very close race! Dow’s Lucky Ducks sold 182 ducks and Flinn’s Lucky Ducks sold 185! That raised $1,835 for the Duck Dash! Thank you so much to those of you who supported this event.
