The first thing you will notice about Priscilla Boren, owner, operator and principal photogra-

pher for Corpus Christi-based D&P Photography, is that you do not notice her at all.

Family members and guests armed with credit card-sized digital cameras stand and crane as the Bride walks down the aisle, creating awkward moments and awkward flashes. Boren is quietly seated in the front row, demurely dressed, her presence almost polite instead of necessary. She carries a tasteful black and white messenger bag that matches the subtle filigree de-tails of the wedding decor. She looks like part of the wedding party.

But she is taking pictures.

Boren’s flashes are discreet, soft and fast - nearly unnoticeable. She is busy catching every mo-ment on film, but she does not make her presence distracting.

When it’s time for group photographs, Boren speaks softly and quickly. She ushers relatives and attendants into poses and quickly snaps. She fluffs the Bride’s train and offers simple, gentle directions, “temple to temple,” “eyes up,” “be natural, exhale” - all in the

name of a good shot.

This is the way of D&P Photography; precise, picture perfect, and almost like

one of the family.

“To be totally honest, she really be-came like a friend to me,” said Eric Gomez, the Groom at the wedding where I followed Boren. Gomez,

a local firefighter, said Boren calmed his nerves about be-ing in front of a camera. The Bride, Rae Castaneda, a local elementary school teacher, echoed the sentiments about

feeling like family and being a great photographer.

“We really became friends,” the newly married Mrs. Gomez said. “She did my engage-

ment photos about six months ago, and I really loved them. We met three or four times, and she prepared

me and my husband to be comfortable with all of the different shots we took that day.”

The newlyweds found D&P Photography through a referral from one of D&P’s clients, also guests at their wedding. Boren said that’s the way her business usually works, moving from event to event based on referrals and solid references. D&P is mostly known for “over the top” event and quinceniera photography. If the party has been rumored to be outrageous, more than likely she has photographed it. Priscilla builds such a rapport with her clients that she chooses to continue to photograph select couples through maternity and family photos.

D&P Photography is a team made of Priscilla and Danney Boren, and on occasion, Janessa Cano and Maria Hood. Boren brings in four rotating assistants to help shoot simultaneous events, but she usually limits herself to one major event a weekend. Part of the D&P experience is taking stills of some very spe-cial and private moments, like a father slipping on his daughter’s wedding shoes right before the ceremony, an often teary-eyed, Cinderella-like moment, accord-ing to Boren.

"I really like to get to know the couples so that they are very comfortable and natural in front of the camera,”

Boren said. “I often keep in touch with them. I cap-ture moments they probably missed at the wedding, and that’s special.”

Boren works hand-in-hand with a stylist. Together, they create photographic moments throughout the day, all while keeping the Bride on schedule. The cou-pling works: at this particular wedding, they worked in tandem throughout the day, and they are booked together for three weddings later in the month.

Boren also said that her forté is making sure that everyone is remembered on the wedding day, from step-grandparents to family friends to event staff who helped make the day perfect.

Adam and Shannon Cortez, a young couple who Boren shot a few years ago at their wedding, were guests at this wedding as well. In total, four different couples at this wedding were clients of D&P Photography, and they all had the same thing to say: she comes as a pho-tographer, but leaves as a friend with a vested stake in capturing the best moments of the day.

In particular, Shannon Cortez said Boren photo-graphed a moment that she’ll cherish forever.

“Priscilla is really amazing,” Cortez said. “She cap-tures moments of the wedding you miss, and that is

really special. When I looked through my wedding pictures, I was so happy to see so many things I had missed, but one picture really caught me by surprise. She took a picture of my husband’s face as I was walking down the aisle. He had tears in his eyes, and that was something I never saw. Simply put, it’s the best picture, and I’ll always be grateful for it. I didn’t even know she had taken it.”

And for Boren, that’s the best thing she could ever hear.
