MAY 2016

Hello, Tanner families,

This year has been fantastic! I am impressed with all of our students and the growth they are making both physically and academically. The students are always very engaged and excited about learning. They deserve the upcoming break. I am also extremely impressed with you - the families! The year has been packed with volunteer opportunities within the classroom, field trip chaperoning, fundraisers, class projects, and family events. Tanner families always seem to go above and beyond staff expectations. Your willingness and desire to be a part of everything we have to offer is much appreciated.

These last five weeks of school will continue to be busy. We have some fun events planned, but the focus on academics will not go away. This month, the staff is currently assessing students for one last time in the areas of math and literacy. We are measuring growth from our previous two assessments completed in the fall and spring. Our goals are for 80% of each grade level to demonstrate proficiency as measured by the spring benchmarks. The staff and students are working hard to ‘Finish Strong’ and meet those goals!

I hope that your summer is filled with fun and laughter. I hope the weather is great and you are able to create memories that last a lifetime. For those of you that will be moving on to a different school, I wish you all the best. It has been a joy working with you and for you. Any school within the district is a GREAT school and the students will continue to be in great hands. For those of you remaining at Tanner for an additional year or two, I look forward to continuing this journey with you. The staff and I will always work hard to provide your children with meaningful, engaging and fun learning opportunities.

Thank you for your continued support for your child’s education and Tanner School! Have a great summer!

Early Release 11:30am

It’s hard to believe that the summer months are right around the corner! Our students are working hard during these last months of school as they continue to grow as readers and writers. The Tanner staff feels a tremendous amount of pride related to the growth of our students as a result of their efforts, and we would love to see them hang on to this growth by reading and writing during the summer!

Continued reading during the summer months is a critical component that will directly impact your child’s overall academic achievement in the upcoming school year. Research shows that students who don’t engage with books during the summer months, experience regression in reading and writing skills and strategies. The saying, “If you don’t use it, you lose it,” proves true for children who spend a summer without books and reading.

How to prevent the traditional summer reading loss? The research gives great support to summer reading – reading to your child and reading by your child. Provide your child with opportunities to read everyday. Remember to utilize the wonderful resources that are available through the Kaukauna Public Library, such as their FREE Summer Reading Program. By making summer reading a priority, you will help your child be ready and successful for his/her upcoming school year. Thanks for all of your support!

Music Notes

from Mrs. Stangel

In Kindergarten music we sang songs about animals that live under the sea including Baby Shark, Charlie

Over the Ocean, and Larry the Lobster. We’ve been following the adventures of a penguin and his

friends under the sea. The penguin helps to remind us that it is o.k. to be different, and that we need to

take care of our Earth.

In 1st grade we have continued to learn more about notes and have been practicing writing notes and

reading rhythms. We’ve written compositions and then played them at bell and keyboard stations in our

music classroom.

Our composer of the month in 1st grade was Henry Mancini. Mr. Mancini was born April 16, 1924 in

Cleveland, Ohio. His main instrument was the flute. His composition styles ranged from Big Band Jazz to

Classical to Pop music. He wrote music for over 100 films. We listened to one of his most recognized songs

- “The Pink Panther”. He was in great demand as a conductor, and won 20 Grammy Awards. He also was

the author of two books.

Our K-1 students got the opportunity to work with Tom Pease and Stuart Stotts thanks to the generosity of

our PAC!. Each classroom helped to write a verse to a song, and Tom and Stuart helped to put these

songs together. Mark your calendars to see all of our songs at our Tanner Celebration -

Thursday, May 5th, 6:00 p.m. in the Kaukauna High School Gym!

April has been a busy month in the gym. We have been focusing a lot on spring and summer activity skills as well as

our basics. Batting, catching & fielding, long jump ropes, kicking & running games (long base), Frisbees, Chariot

scooters and much more!

The kindies & 1st graders are getting many of the spring assessments done so when the nice weather hits we can be

outside biking. They’ve also been focusing on team play, not only the skills involved but the teamwork and

sportsmanship that is crucial.

The 1st grades have also been learning about and practicing the Pacer. The pacer is an endurance fitness test that all

students district wide participate in 2nd grade-high school. In the spring of 1st grade we introduce the kiddos to the

test, concept of pacing and practice to prepare them for 2nd grade. The kids get excited about doing it and like the

challenge.

4K kiddos have been working on all the skills and station work listed above! They also have used the parachute and a

variety of riding toys that encourage balance, coordination, fitness team work & endurance.

Coming up in May—helmet fitting, May 9th and Field Day, May 20th.

ART UPDATE by Miss Austin As the school year is wrapping up you can look forward to your child's “artist portfolio” coming home! It will be full of your child's artwork from the school year and I could not be more excited for them to share it all with you! Thank you Tanner

students and families for another amazing year!

Thank you! Thank You! Thank You! Wow, what a great year we had. Again this year, we were able to plan and support family events for Tanner students,

support our PBIS program at Tanner, invest in technology, provide bike helmets to all kindergarten students, assist

with classroom enhancements and field trips. These are just a few of the ways your support and generosity has

helped our students this year. We have amazing children and families at Tanner. Again—thanks a bunch!!

As busy parents many of us are unable to be in the schools on a regular basis. However we all have an opportunity to

make a large impact at Tanner. The PAC is always looking for more parents to join us in making a difference. Please

consider stopping in at any of our meetings.

Our next meeting will be Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at 6:00p.m. in the library. Hope to see you all there!!!

Oh no—you can’t make the May meeting, that’s ok, we’ll be ready to see you in the fall.

Math Matters Games are a great way to spend time with your child this summer and grow their math skills. Card games

build number sense. A simple deck of cards can be used for multiple games. A couple of favorites are Go

Fish (Partners of Ten) and War. Board games with dice are also helpful in recognizing a number pattern

and a way to practice a child’s counting skills. Give your child the opportunity to “deal” as another way to

practice counting and one to one matching. Playing games with your child this summer not only builds

quality time but number sense as well!

NEWS FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE

Summer is the time of year when minor cuts and scrapes are plentiful for kids. Proper wound care will go a

long way to help reduce your child’s discomfort, help with healing and reduce scarring. What is proper wound

care? The following steps are best practice for minor cuts and scrapes:

Thoroughly clean the wound with soap and water.

Pat dry.

Apply antibiotic ointment to wound.

Cover with bandage during the day to keep the wound clean; the bandage may be removed at night.

Repeat daily until wound is healed.

Don’t hesitate to contact your child’s doctor for advice on:

Wounds that are more serious in nature.

Wounds that don’t seem to be healing.

Wounds that appear to be developing an infection: red, irritated, swollen, hot to touch, draining cloudy or

foul smelling fluid, increase in pain or your child is just not acting like themselves.

Sometimes a simple bandage and a TLC will go a long way to make your child feel much better.

Attention Parents: At the close of each school year, Tanner Library has to do a complete inventory of library materials. In order to do this, we must ask that all student library materials be returned to our library by Friday, May 13. Please remind your child to return all materials on or before that date. Bills for not returned library items will be sent home on Friday, May 20th. Please do not remit any payment until a bill has been sent home. Thanks so much! FREE PRESCHOOL SCREENING The Kaukauna Area School District will be holding a free preschool screening at Tanner Early Learning

Center on May 26th (pm), May 27th (am), May 31st, & June 1st for Kaukauna Area School District children.

Information about the screening has already been mailed to most parents of children who will be four on or

before September 1, 2016. In addition, parents of three year olds are encouraged to schedule a screening

if there are any questions or concerns about their child’s development.

The screening results will be used to provide parents with information about their child’s current

development and to provide suggestions for follow-up activities. Parents will also receive information about

district and community services. When there is reasonable cause to believe a child may have an

impairment, the child will be referred for an evaluation.

The screening will last approximately one hour. Please call 766-6150 (Tanner School) if you need

registration information. You will be notified of your appointment date and time about two weeks prior to

the screening.

PLACEMENT WITH CARE The elementary staff will soon be starting the student placement process for the 2016-17 school year. Our goal is to

create heterogeneous classroom groups to accommodate the learning needs and styles of every student. The staff

at each school spends a great deal of time and effort to determine the proper homeroom placement of children for

the coming year. The following factors are considered when seeking to provide the best educational program for all

students in any given classroom:

Provide a balance by gender, ability, leadership qualities and classroom size

Balancing by gender

Balancing by ability levels (below, on or above grade level)

Balancing specific strengths and needs, including special needs, giftedness or language issues

Maintaining optimal classroom size Create a positive match for students with peers

Considerations are given for students who do not work well together, and also for students who may get

along “too well,” interfering with learning. Specific behavior needs (such as assertiveness, shyness,

attention span and behavior choices) are also considered.

Information from other school staff and from other school environments Information from related arts (music, art, physical education, library media) staff, Pupil Services staff, and

Individual Education Plan (IEP) teams are considered based on knowledge and observations of children in

multiple environments.

Parent input Information from parents is considered as the final step in the process.

We find that most parents are comfortable with the classroom placements made by staff. However,

we realize that parents can also provide specific information about their child that could be helpful

in assisting the student placement process. Parents may choose to provide written input into the

placement process via the PARENT INPUT FORM available in the school office. To obtain the

in put form, you may stop in the office or request that a form be sent home with your child.

Please note that:

Completing a form is optional. The intent of this form is to provide additional child-specific information for the

placement process, and not to specify a teacher preference. Requests that name a specific teacher will not be

considered in the placement process.

Verbal information or requests cannot be honored.

Please understand that while we attempt to honor parent requests where possible, we may not always be able to

fulfill each request due to the multiple factors considered in the placement process.

SUMMER SCHOOL 2016 Summer School Facts Location - All classes will be held at the Kaukauna High School again this summer.

Dates To Remember – All K-8 and enrichment courses will be held from

June 7 – 30, Monday – Thursday only

EARLY CHILDHOOD

& 4K STUDENTS The last day for the EC Blended Pre-School class is Tuesday, May 24th and the last day for all

4K students is Wednesday, May 25th. The screening for those students who will be

4 years old on or before September 1st will be held on

May 26th, May 27th, May 31st and June 1st.

Before the school year draws to a

close we encourage you to take a

peek at our lost and found box locat-

ed in front lobby. We have a nice

array of items that would love to find

their way back home. Who knows, just maybe you

will find that sweatshirt, shoe or hat that has been

missing lately.

A NOTE FROM

CHARTWELLS… With the end of the school year fast approaching we

ask that you take note of your child/children’s lunch

account balance. Accounts will have to be brought up

to date by the end of the school year. If we do not

receive payment by June 8, 2016, and the account

balance is more than a $20.00 negative it will be sent

to the Kaukauna Area School District Collection Agen-

cy. If you choose to let your child/children’s lunch

account balance go below the $5.00 mark because of

the end of the year, please remember the Kaukauna

Area School District Messenger Service will continue

to contact you. This is an automated service and

cannot be turned off.

Remember to make each day a safe and healthy one!

If you think your family might have a hard time

paying for back to school clothes next year, there

will be an event in August called Cool For School

that may be helpful to you. The event is run through

the Community Clothes Closet in Menasha. The

program this year is new clothing and $25.00 shoe

voucher for Rogan’s Shoes. In order to participate,

you will need to either be a current Clothes Closet

client OR you will need a referral form to become a

client. Contact your school social worker, Lisa Gretz

(766-6100, ext: 5228), if you need a referral

form. Although it may seem early to be thinking

about back-to-school, it is best to reach out to

Mrs. Gretz now as summer hours are limited and it

may be difficult to reach her.

SUPPLY LISTS Supply lists for 2016-2017 will be sent home with pro-

gress reports on the last day of school. They will also be

posted on our website and on file at area stores in August.
