Stakeholder: Dave

Dave is a dedicated, caring,

committed high school

teacher who enjoys working

with senior students and

providing advice to them. He

is currently the year 11 Co-

ordinator and responsible for

a year group of 190

students.

Dave currently works in an all boys high school.

Part of his role is to support his year group in terms of their

pastoral needs which includes career advice. Dave has

been a senior high school teacher for 26 years.

Rapidly turning ideas into reality

Say

Loosely it is part of my role to give careers advice

I give general advice to students on helping them with life after

school

I am the contact for my 190 students

Who is responsible for what is not clearly defined

I don’t know what my role is versus careers adviser

There is a bit of confusion from the kids perspectives

I don’t have a budget and I don’t know what money I have to operate

on

I give them individual support and encouragement

Many students are immature and fearful about this process.

There is a lot to do while they are trying to focus on study.

I get a lot of information sent to me from tertiary institutions, careers

expos, employer groups, etc

The careers adviser is a full time teacher and doesn’t have industry

or recruitment experience

I don’t have the full breadth of knowledge

Kids need more individual support

The variety of information and sources is overwhelming

Do

Watched Dave sort through emails received from tertiary institutions

and TAFEs about application process / dates, course information\

Observed him search the internet for closing dates for applications,

tips on interviews, application and CV writing skills

Dave has a file with pamphlets on careers expos, course information,

employer group promotions that he looked through to find specific

information for a student

There are numerous sources of information and when doing internet

searches there are many listings for different information but not one

area or ‘trusted’ site to use

Think

It is very confusing and overwhelming for kids

going through this

There should be more support mechanisms in

place from professionals

There should be clear lines of delineation between

my role and careers adviser

It is hard to keep up with the amount of information

supplied and because it comes from multiple

sources, there is no central location to access

everything

Many teachers are ill-equipped to provide

professional advice to students about the transition

from school to work

Often significant role models in students life are

incapable of giving good advice

Page 6: D school assignment 1 empathise and define

Feel

Helpless that he can’t do more to help the kids that are

fearful / lost / uncertain as to what to do after they

finish high school

Frustrated because he doesn’t know if he’s stepping

on careers advisers toes and doesn’t have budget to

organise events or professional support

Overwhelmed by the amount of individual support for

so many kids in his care

Overwhelmed by the amount of information to search

through – both electronically and manually

Positive about helping students

and genuinely interested in their

wellbeing

Page 7: D school assignment 1 empathise and define

Rapidly turning ideas into reality

Teachers want to support and nurture students through

the transition from school to work but often are

ineffective

Some students feel scared and overwhelmed by the

tasks they need to complete in order to transition from

school to work

The volume and sources of information related to the

transition from school to work is overwhelming and

difficult to navigate

Information to assist students in the school to work

transition can be confusing and difficult to find for both

students and teachers

This is a difficult time for students at this age in general

as they are occupied with study and exams at the same

time having to make important life decisions of which

they have minimal experience and sometimes direction

and role models.

Insights

Problem Statement

Stakeholder

needs a way to

Need Insights

because

Dave, a

dedicated,

caring,

committed

teacher who

enjoys

supporting and

providing

advice to

senior students

easily access

information to

help prepare

students for

life after

school

senior high

students are

time poor and

lacking in life

experience and

often role

models to guide

their decisions

How might we make access to information relating to the

transition from school to work easy for teachers and students?
