and her editors 5o not respect our brothers credentials or his name enough to check it out and get it right

To call the Powernomics Plan racist and suggest it perpetuates reverse racism is just plain ignorant and quite frankly silly and stupid Racism is grounded in power Seen any power among Black people in this country lately

Furthermore does a call against reverse racism mean that forward racism is all right

To equate a relatively small Black economic enclave (located within a city that is overwhelmingly populated by Black people) with a separatist movement and a foreboding sinister plot to discriminate against other groups is

ludicrous Black consumers are the

primary customers of these other ethnic groups which are never referred to in such a negative manner the only discrimination that occurs is in favor of these other groups as we support their businesses 24-7-365

To say the Powernomics Plan will actually create a negative environment that will drive businesses from Detroit and create a climate of fear that will eliminate Detroit from serious consideration as a location to develop or grow a business is the typical language used to cause trepidation and to conjure up stereotypical imagery of Black folks

Red Light Camera Update

Highway LBJ Freeway at Centerville Road and Jupiter Road at Kingsley Road The City is

installing a fifth red light camera which should be operational by the end of November 2004 The newest camera will be located at the intersection of Centerville and Northeast Parkway This camera will feature digital technology and allow violators to go online to view a short video playback of the infraction

collisions and related costs arising from red light violations The cameras monitor intersections on a 247 basis

As of the end of September 2004 the program has resulted in the issuance of 29462 Notices of Violation Of those 13912 violations have been paid Most importantly the SafeLIGHT Garland program has resulted in a 21 percent reduction in red light running violations at monitored intersections

In order to participate in the occasion at least one individual of the couple had to be a member of the church and they both had to go through a pre-marriage counseling session

As an incentive the couples were offered a completely free wedding package valued at ten thousand dollars that included hotel and limousine packages

Amer ican polit ics t h roughou t its history has always h a d a myster ious relat ionship with religion F r o m Washington Jefferson and Lincoln down to our cur ren t Pres ident Amer ican leaders have invoked a measure of faith as pa r t of their presidencies

In general the church has no t been overtly political Most pastors understood that their role was spiritual while politics was secular Church and State were theoretically separate

N o w the nation appears to be more par t i san and religiously divided in a hostile battle between pragmatists and true believers and messianic zeal versus verified facts

However when the religious and political divide is discussed the Chris t ian Coal i t ion automatical ly becomes the major agenda topic Therefore to have an understanding of the current religious division in America requires some insight into the Christ ian Coalit ion and its control of the Republican Party

T h e roots of the G O P Holy War can be found in the racial appeals of Richard Nixon s southern strategy initiated in the 1960s Code words and programs that placated Blacks simultaneously promised the traditionally democrat ic south that the government would not facilitate social and economic changes for minorities

Nixons strategy nur tured by racial fears was very successful as the G O P won five of the last eight president ia l elections T h e religious right honed its skills in the 1970s under the

leaders such as Reverend Jerry Falwell flying a b a n n e r that declared America a Christian Nat ion

But more than anything else the change in Republ ican politics was affected fay the Reverend Pat Robertson who lost the presidential nomination race in 1988 bu t took his contributor lists and founded the Christian Coalition to advance what he called res tor ing the greamess of America through moral strength

Fueled by a traditional family values agenda centered around opposition to abortion and gay rights fundamentalist Christians by 1992 had taken control of state G O P parties in as many as a dozen states and had working majorities in several h u n d r e d school boards a round the country They financed anti gay initiatives a n d developed a strategy to use churches as the vehicle for advancing their agenda

All over Amer ica in large cities a n d small towns the Christian Coalition has set up stealth training centers These are boot camps where Coalition m e m b e r s are taught how to infiltrate churches and br ing them aroimd to the new agenda of the Religious Right

Indoc t r ina t ion efforts are initially focused on the pastor with Coal i t ion l i eu tenants anempt ing to convince h im that in order to be relevant in todays world the church must address political realities that just h a p p e n to coincide with the Coalitions agenda

If this does not work then the focus shifts to key church staff members the church board or significant long time supporters

T h e constant message is that it is the churchs responsibility to provide information that can he lp Chr is t ian congregat ions make Christ directed decisions in any elections Eventually a

constituency is developed which will in turn put pressure on the pastor if he has resisted

T h e pastor may no longer have any alternative bu t to capitulate if he wants to keep his job

T h e Coalitions goal is to take over local churches of any denomination They will bring in literature to be distributed provide informat ion to be included in newslet ters and arrange for political candidates to visit the church

Thei r slogan is If you learn the rules of the game you can win the game and the main thrust of the training is to be aggressive enough so that any negative a rgumen t s are eventually swept aside

In the words of executive director Ralph Reed I want to be invisible I do guerrilla warfare I paint my face and travel at night You dont know its over until youre in a body bag

T h e strength of the religious rights influence can be seen in the Faith Based Initiative Over 1000 religious leaders signed pet i t ions urg ing Congress to reject the adminis t ra t ion s proposition for this ill-advised use of tax dollars

T h e crusade to expand this fai th-based policy cont inues unaba t ed with m a n y Black clergy jumping at the chance to receive tax money that is being taken from the same people targeted for service

T h e false prophets adorned in sheeps clothing are all around us Thei r goal is to take control of our country to have absolute power over us and they will use any means possible

According to Rober t Frizzell of American Airiines This is a perfect opportunity for us to give back to the community who support us on a daily basis Frizzell was also excited about meet ing the scholarship finalists and

winners at the ceremony This puts a personal face to the scholarship p rogram when you meet the students and hear their stories

Rober t M c R a e of Enterprise noted that giving out scholarships is a way his company mainta ins its community presence It is part of our corporate goal of strengthening and giving back

to the community Also excited about meeting

the s tudents was Deborah Hunter Johnson of American Airlines who echoed Frizzells comments about meeting die parems Tm happy to see the parents suppor t ing the students It takes a village to raise a child

She also noticed the high caliber of s tudents in this

years contest Its an outstanding crop of students T h e y have to be to have made it this far They are bright and they can go places They are the key to our future

Words such as fear and phrases such as negative environment are always used to resist Black self-determined economic empowerment

Why would anyone be in fear of a Black business district How would such a district create a negative environment Other ethnic groups dont fear us enough to stop setting up their businesses in the hearts of some of the most dangerous BlacK neighborhoods in this country So whos really afraid of this plan

Why would this business district discourage others from starting businesses in Detroit as Councilwoman Kay Everett stated in her editorial Also what caused the businesses to leave in the first place There

was lAfTOWefftomtcg plan for Detrdr20 years ago Lets see now the canned answer to that question will be Crime So now we are not only faced with the fear of crime excuse we have to deal with the fear of Black business excuse too

Better watch out for those scary I Black business owners and |spccially those Black employees of those businesses BOO Are you scared yet

Whar vlaquo^l 80 percent of Detrtjits citizenry do about this How will they take this latest affront to their economic prosperity I dont know but I will offer this much It would be a sad commentary for a city where Blacks spend S l l billion per year if those in charge cannot find a way to build a firm and sustainable economic foundation from which Black Detroiters can be elevated

On the other hand if it works in Detroit it can be replicated across this country I know thats a scary thought

to some but doesnt it make sense that if Black people do well collectively the country docs even better

Anderson is from Detroit and he has a lot of personal investment in his hometown What he is attempting to do is help his people his home team by encouraging more economic development more self-help more entrepreneurship more alliances and subsequent growth and sustainability

That is commendable and he as well as the council members who approved the plan should be held in high esteem for that

Ken Bridges co-founder of the MATAH Network was also from Detroit As many of you know Ken was killed by the DC sniper Kens legacy is one that should inspire every conscious Black person and a few white people to support Claud Anderson and the Detroit council members

Ken and Dr Anderson were friends and worked together for economic empowerment Ken died on his way to freedom Dr Anderson is still fighting and has been for many years now

Dont both of them deserve our love and respect especially from Detroiters

Ken Bridges promoted Internal Reparations something we can do while we wait for external reparations and while we wait for the mayor of Detroit to find the land for the Powernomics Project

While we wait we can practice for the Big Game by redirecting more of our spending toward our own businesses We can practice by starting new businesses and growing those we already have via the massive support of Black consumers and any other consumers who think the move to inhibit Black economic empowerment is the wrong move
