Competition
• Five preliminary rounds (Term 1/2)• Semi/Final day (Term 3)• Columba College• Wednesdays at 4pm• Teams of 3 or 4• Year 9 – 10• Maximum of two teams per school• $60 per team

Prepared Rounds• 2 prepared rounds• We will send you a topic a week in advance• You will have all week to prepare with your
team (look up examples, research, practise with your team)
• No specific rules around what you can do to prepare for these rounds
• Speech times will be 4 - 5 min• 2 – 3 minute reply• Points of information between 1 - 4 min

Advised-Topic Rounds• 2 advised rounds• We will send you a topic theme (e.g. Alcohol)• You will have all week to prepare with your
team • No specific rules around what you can do to
prepare for these rounds (we would suggest looking at current events, and familiarising yourself with the topic)
• Speech times will be 4 - 5 min• 2 – 3 minute reply• Points of information between 1 - 4 min

Limited-Prep Rounds• 1 limited preparation round• We will give you the moot one hour before the
debate• You will have one hour to prepare with your
team • Speech times will be 4 - 5 min• 2 – 3 minute reply• Points of information between 1 - 4 min• This is the WSDC style and the most common
in school debating

• Every round will be adjudicated by a OUDS adjudicator.
• They will decide who won the debate and give you speaker scores, as well as announce a ‘Best Speaker’
• Speaker scores will be marked on a 60 - 80 range (70 is an average speech)
• Adjudicators are required to give you feedback on your speech and answer any questions you have.

Draw• Teams will be power-paired throughout
competition• Roughly even number of affirmatives and
negatives• Will not debate a team twice• Will not debate same school• Compromises will be necessary• Moots/topics released at least a week before
debate• Released on website, Facebook, and by email

Break• Top four teams will advance to semi-finals• Teams are ranked firstly by ‘wins’• Secondly by total ‘speaker points’• Thirdly by ‘win points’• Fourthly by coin toss• Winner is decided by elimination• Break rounds will have a panel of adjudicators

Open Day• Show Debate 9 am – 10 am• Workshops 10 am – 10:45 am• Prep time 10:45 am – 11:30 am• Practice Debate 11:30 am – 12:30 pm
• Students may leave straight after their adjudication
• Teachers are recommended to remain behind for an adjudication seminar during the lunch break
