LTG's Message
November is officially here! Can you believe that we are already halfway through this Key
Club year? November is Kiwanis Family Month! This means it's all about promoting the
Kiwanis Family. This year's Key Club week will take place specifically from November 5th -
9th. Let's show everyone what Key Club is all about!
November is also the month of giving. I'm extremely grateful to have to honor of serving this
division and especially YOU, the members! Thank you for all that you do.
Every month, I will post a challenge that I would like for you all to complete. You can post it
on the division facebook page or your home club page... maybe email it to me or someone else-
whatever floats your boat! This is not mandatory, but it would be awesome if you could all do
it!
CHALLENGE: What do you give thanks to most and how are you giving back to those things
through service?

Hello from American! School is back, and so are we! The third week of
September, our school is holding Rush Week, and those are the five crazy
days spent gathering new members to Key Club! We definitely kept an
eye out for shiny new freshmen! Of course, because of our namesake, a
bunch of people asked us if we made keys… Surprisingly though, this
common misunderstanding led way to many new signers. Our officers
also garnered much attention in the rotunda when we were asked how
we felt. All of a sudden, we erupted into an, “ABOOGA! ABOOGA! ABOOGA
BOOGA BOOGA,” and surprised our guests. It was fun. And much to our
satisfaction, we harvested almost 300 sign ups! Key Club’s station was
almost always seen filled with people. Once things settle down again, we
will be holding our first general meeting of the year. We will definitely
prepare to impress and hope to achieve a full house in our meeting room!
It’ll be fun kickoff to the new year, as well as the last year that most of us
officers who are seniors of the graduating class of ’13.
Hello, all! September was a great month for Independence High
School Key Club, as we broke our all time school record with
over a 1,000 service hours! Our general meetings quickly filled
up and we also publicized at our school's Club Day! As we
wrapped up the final days of our Chinese Moon Festival craft
days at Overfelt gardens, many volunteers helped out at the
annual Chinese Moon Festival, where we helped children make
crafts and helped with the festival entertainment. Publicity of
FRN increased as we gathered our members to attend the
highly spirited event of the year! We recently partnered with
UNICEF to raise money for the Eliminate Project through Trick
or Treat Boxes, which will definitely be a success! See you at
FRN!!

This was the month we were all back to school! As such, Irvington focused on attracting
members, students, and incoming freshmen to joining Key Club. There was a large emphasis
on publicity to attract members, so we worked to put up several posters and create an
informative and visually-friendly powerpoint. Irvington had two special meetings for our first
meeting - one during the weekend and one during school. We worked together to figure out
what parts we were going to say, and the items we all needed to bring in order to make our
meeting successful. The meeting was a good success, with 97 interested students coming to
see what Key Club is all about. Shanel and I had attended our second Kiwanis meeting on the
4th to bring updates to Key Club and some events. We were glad to meet them all again, and
we were able to gain insight on possible future events Irvington could be hosting. This month
we had a few volunteers come help out at HERS Breast Cancer Walk as well. Although there
were some difficulties, we will be sure to keep those in mind when volunteering next year. In
the future months, we plan to have consistent monthly events such as Abode Services or local
animal shelters. Next month we are having volunteers come out to participate in the Bone and
Joint Expo as well as Trick-Or-Treat for Unicef.
KIPP was able to recruit a lot of new members and bring back some old members to
our club! Compared to last year, the number of active members is so much higher than
it was last year! New and old members are super excited and ready to serve! Next
week, we will be serving at KIPP Heartwood Academy, helping teachers and students
throughout the day. Most of our members went to Heartwood for middle school, so it'll
be a fun opportunity to return! We also will be participating in the Walk to End
Alzheimer's on October 20th. Looking forward to an awesome year of service!

A total of 5 Key Clubbers attended the Region
Training Conference at Camp Jones Gulch on
the weekend of September 29-30! We all had
a total blast at the event, despite the rugged
terrain. We learned more about
organizations and projects such as The
Eliminate Project, Live 2 Learn, Project
JumpStart, and March of Dimes while
meeting Key Clubbers from all over Regions
9, 15, and 17. Milpitas Key Club will be
participating in Rock & Roll Marathon, FAAN
Alzheimer's Walk for the month of October
as well as trick-or-treating for UNICEF. We
are also planning to hold a clothes drive to
collect clothes to donate to either a local
orphanage or food pantry, so keep on the
lookout for that if you're interested in
helping out. And of course, we are ECSTATIC
to see all the superheroes at Fall Rally North
on October 27!!! :)
During the month September MSJ Key Club has
been working very hard on recruiting
members! We had spent a long time trying to
advertise about our first meeting, during our
meeting we talked a little bit about what Key
club is in general also what MSJ Key club is and
how it is different from other clubs. We talked
a little bit about some events like Fall Rally
North as well as CBT charity badminton
tournament. After the meeting we had people
come up to ask any questions they had and to
sign up which many of the people present at
the meeting did! We will be continuing to
mention more events and get the members
more involved in MSJ Key Club this year and
bring MSJ Key Club back to its fullmost
potential!

Forest accounts for 20% of our oxygen. Sadly, every second, 2
football fields of trees are cut down. To mitigate the damages
done to forest world wide, Piedmont Hills Key Club collaborated
with Our City Forest, a non profit organization devoted to
restoring the environment. Last Saturday, a group of 20 kids
planted 28 trees in 2 hours in the city of Milpitas. We worked
hard, and by the end of the day, even though our backs hurt, we
all felt great knowing we made a difference. - Samantha Tu
On Saturday September 15th, about 20 members of our club took part of National Coastal Clean Up Day.
In the areas surrounding Guadalupe River in downtown San Jose, we cleaned up litter. Along with many
other Key Clubbers from the surrounding area we filled loads and loads of bags with litter. By then end of
the day, we filled multiple truck loads and learned that especially thanks to Key Clubbers, this one of their
biggest turn outs. We look forward to helping out with this event in the coming years. All members
earned 5 hours with this service event. Another event we are involved in on a weekly basis, is Books
Aloud which takes place at Martin Luther King Jr. library every Monday from 3-6 pm. We have had a few
students go every week which has brought out totals hours for the month of September to 17 hours. In
addition to Books Aloud, we have to major events coming up this month. On Sunday October 14th, our
club will participate in the Walk to Stop Diabetes in Guadalupe River Park. We will be under the team
name of San Jose High Key Club and will run/walk 5K! In addition to this, we will indirectly fundraise for
the American Diabetes Association. Another very exciting event that is coming up for all CNH clubs is Fall
Rally North at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom! It's a fun filled day full of rallies and excitement which you
also get hours for! Can't wait for the D12E pride that is going to be shown!
This month, we added 6 new members to our
executive board! After applications and
interviews, we finally selected freshmen Htet
Wint, Cynthia Chang, Winfield Zhang, and
Dylan Edelson and Senior Maty Boury! Our new
tech editor is Yolande Huynh. We have a
significant increase in members going to Fall
Rally North this year so we're all super pumped
to meet all the other Key Clubbers! Earlier this
month, we helped Kiwanis with their
Fingerprinting Booth at the Newark Days event
and it was definitely a lot of fun talking to
children and families!

On October 12th, I attended my very first DCM as D12E's Spirit Coordinator. It was pretty awesome! Although my Co-Spirit Coordinator, CJ Velasco, and I were both about an hour late, we still went all out. I honestly was completely unprepared for what the DCM had in store for me. I thought it was just a little meeting, I WAS SO WRONG. There was an awesome amount of spirited and friendly people there! All of my Milpitas homies were on the other side of the entrance, so I saw no one I knew the moment I walked in. Luckily for us, DCMers are all coo kids and were happy to greet us! A few minutes in, it reached the point that the Spirit Coordinator had to begin teaching cheers, we were pretty lost. Considering that we just got there, we were unprepared and not yet comfortable with the room. CJ and I ended up yolo’ing everything and made our first Divisional Council Meeting our best meeting. Instead of making capes as we planned, CJ and I were given the rest of the meeting to do whatever with everyone there, it was absolutely fantastic.

SHOW YOUR K IN EVERY WAY Show people what Key Club is all about! Spread the word by wearing Key Club gear and publicizing Key Club Week in local stores, your school Web site, community newspapers—even on the radio.
BRING A FRIEND TO KEY CLUB More members = more service. Increasing the amount of service Key Club performs increases the impact Key Club has on the world. Bring a friend, or two, or more to your next Key Club meeting.
CONNECT THE KS Celebrate the entire family of Kiwanis by getting the whole gang involved. Connect with local Kiwanis, Circle K International, Builders, Kiwanis Kids or Aktion clubs and team up for a joint service project.
KUDOS TO THE KEY PLAYERS Personally thank all the Key Club supporters you know—teachers, advisors and other Key players. Write thank-you notes, host an appreciation dinner or do something uniquely your own style to recognize the contributions of these special people.
Although Sirena is a publicity officer, she goes above and beyond her duties. She is always asking if there is anything that needs to be done graphic-wise as well as in general such as taking care of t-shirt orders and payments. When our secretary had to step down from her position, Sirena volunteered to take on some of the roles such as keeping track of hours and points even though it's not part of her officer itinerary. She consistently is an active officer and volunteers to go to many Key Club events as well as works hard on any fliers/powerpoints/posters/etc. that need to be done. Sirena takes her role as a publicity commissioner seriously, and we really appreciate having her as an officer!
San Jose High's member of the month is actually a new member to the club, freshman Jonathan Jimenez. The reason for me choosing him, is that right off the bat he was an excited Key Clubber! Unlike many other freshmen who were a bit shy to participate during the cheers, Jonathan was front and center! It was probably due to his knowledge from his cousin, and past San Jose president Ericson Ancheta. Jonathan has already become a board member and encouraging his fellow freshmen to become involved. He his also prompt and has come to every event we have had so far! I look forward to him getting to know the other members of our division and taking leadership in the coming years.
KEY CLUB WEEK

November is the month of giving thanks to those who truly made an impact in your life. I just want to take the time to thanks to all the Key Club volunteers who always spend endless hours giving back to their community. Your time and effort mean a lot! Although doing community service is not about getting recognized for what you do, but I think you guys deserve all the appreciation there is from volunteering. So once again, thank you!
