Amsterdam is a city divided between land and water. This has shaped the manner in which new spaces are created and how cities have developed. Due to the global warming process, water levels are rising. This should be seen as an opportunity and not a menace.

The key point and main question of that process is : Would it be possible to create the building that includes both : the water and the earth at the same time ?

It is possible to carry out the project on Java Island. The Island could be divided by Amstel river into 2 parts with the ground in the center. The West end of the Island seems to be the rivers mouth that makes us follow its meanders. We can imagine that every our step brings us closer and closer to the city center.

Amsterdam, ville en partie gagnée sur l’eau s’adapte au fil des ans à la

pénurie d’espaces constructibles. L’eau, si présente dans cette ville, devient alors une

chance à saisir pour y bâtir de nouveaux espaces. Cet élément s’avère être le moyen

de développer le pays. Aujourd’hui l’eau tend à récupérer de plus en plus sa place,

avec le réchauffement climatique et ne doit plus être considérée comme une menace

mais bien comme une opportunité.

La question se pose alors, est-il possible de créer un bâtiment permettant

de lier la terre et l’eau, et ainsi deux types de constructions à priori complètement

différents ?

Java Eiland offre la possibilité de tester ce principe, elle scinde l’Amstel en

deux bras donnant ainsi à la terre une place centrale. La pointe ouest de l’île semble

être une avancée sur le fleuve laissant son extrémité désigner l’embouchure du canal,

guidant le regard, comme un observatoire sur la ville. On s’imagine alors pouvoir

avancer sur l’eau et atteindre le centre ci-proche, mais à la fois couper de nous.

A giant canopy immerges from the Amstel from the North bank anchoring

it’s self firmly to the land.

It is like a vast translucent sail joining land and water, without however, obscuring the

view of it’s surrounding from within. The idea being, one can see and be seen.

These events are designed to attract visitors to the ARCAM II creating

a vibrant living structure.

The current site is a substantial “green zone” currently appreciated by the community. This project maintains the integrity and

The ARCAM is merely an unobtrusive extension designed to adapt itself to

the seasons, a changing environment and the needs of the community.

The public can access the site by two means. Land and water.

Amsterdam’s water buses can arrive via either side of the floating dock and

visitors can access the rest of the site by means of the metallic ramp.

The design allows visibility to all the spaces, be it on land on the water or under water.

The opalescent nature of the exterior roof allows this huge structure to integrate

unobtrusively into its environment.

the weather permits.

At night the structure is illuminated from the inside with lights refracting on the membrane enhancing the lightness of its metal sructure. The ARCAM II

would glow softly making it an attractive elegante addition to Amsterdam’s skyline.
