With August here, summer is slowly unraveling its last folds to be
replaced by the start of school. But no fear, summer is not over yet, and
there is still many more memories waiting to be made—whether it be
the memory of pumping out summer homework last minute, lazing at
the beach, waking up at noon, or traveling to our places (and, of
course, eating all day).
Over the next couple weeks—especially—Key Club has lots in store for
you all … starting with this Saturday, August 18: come out and chill with
the rest of Orange County’s finest at Region 03’s 16th annual Beach
Boomba!!! We’ll be playing games, eating under the sun, tanning by
the ocean, and finishing off with a BOOM at our bonfire! But don’t
worry, it doesn’t end there. On the 25th, we have our 2nd annual Division
41 South Car Wash Competition—SVUSD vs. CUSD! Come support your
respective school district at El Toro or Laguna Hills High School! A clean
car for a good cause—a perfect way to wrap up summer.
So don’t feel panicked about the end of summer yet; there is still so
much left to do! Don’t forget to keep serving your community,
especially asking to help out with registration and orientation at your
local elementary and middle schools! And be sure to buy a 2012-2013
Division 41 South t-shirt (they are supes phresh)—contact your president
for more info!
Be sure to apply sunblock, drink LOTSO LOTSO LOT of water, protect
your eyes, get sleep, and brush your teeth … Summer is not over yet!
Finish your summer right, with a ROAR.
On the Prowl for Service,
Hannah Tuong Lieutenant Governor

On the 26th and 31st of July, members of the ANHS Key Club volunteered their time at the Premier
Recreation Services' 2012 Championship Swim Meet, located at the Aliso Viejo Aquatic Center.
Participating in the swim meet were the young swimmers (ages 4-16) of the Aliso Viejo Flying Fish,
the Emerald Bay Wahoos, and the Newport Coast Great White Sharks. The 254 youths
participating in the swim meet competed and raced against one another while performing
different styles of swim strokes, which included the butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and
freestyle! While the children swam between 25-100 meters—depending on age—Key club
volunteers were busy timing, recording swimmers’ scores, guiding children to their lanes, and
keeping everything organized and safe! Most importantly, Key club members joined in with the
large amount of parents and family members whom were cheering the children on and making
sure the event was enjoyable for everyone!

On the 19th of May from 9:30am-12:00pm, many Key Clubbers attended the annual Pancake
Breakfast in Laguna Hills. This is a $5 unlimited pancake-and-sausage breakfast hosted
annually on behalf of the Saddleback Kiwanis Club. Our volunteers basically either helped
guests find a seat and get situated or served guests pancakes, sausages, juice, and coffee.
They had to make sure everyone was comfortable and also had everything he or she
needed. It was a little bit hectic and stressful, but it was a very fun event that gave us the
opportunity to meet oodles of new people. By helping out with this event, we were able to
provide many senior citizens with a fun place to not only get a yummy breakfast but also to
catch up with their friends and make plans to go to places afterwards. The Aliso Niguel Key
Club plans to attend this event for as long as it continues to exist because not only is it lots of
fun but it’s also a great event to meet new people!

On July 21st, Capo Key Club participated in the Divisional “Free Bake Sale” competition in order
to see which school could raise the most money for the Pediatric Trauma Program—an
organization that raises money to help support doctors whom treat children and provide
equipment to prevent various avoidable accidents. Although many were on vacation, there
were still many zealous Capo Key Clubbers who came out to participate in this summer event.
The Capo Key Clubbers brought various baked goodies like cakes, brownies, and cookies.
Despite the roaring heat, Capo Key Clubbers were able to brave the rising temperature for the
sake of service. After the Bake Sale, Capo Key Club united with the other schools in the division
at the July DCM to report our fundraising success. In the end, the Capo Key Clubbers had a
great time participating in the bake sale and grew more intimate as a club.

Music is not only an art or form of expression, but also a means by which Key Clubbers can
contribute their musical talents as well as educate and influence their community positively.
On July 29th, Capo Key Clubbers volunteered at Pacific Symphony’s “Symphony in the Cities”
summer program at Great Park in Irvine. At the event, Key Clubbers helped with various
booths at the music fair, teaching children how to play various instruments and spreading
the art of music. Whether playing the violin or beating the drums, Key Clubbers reached out
to many children with smiles and enthusiasm to introduce them to a wide selection of
instruments available at the many booths. Not only were the children happy, but the Key
Clubbers were also happy as well in contributing to their community through the medium of
music. You could say that this event was the “forte” of events in July and we hope to
“crescendo” throughout the rest of summer with service.

Goodies Galore Our bake sale was held by the Ralph’s in Laguna Niguel. It
consisted of a variety of baked goods, which included
cookies, brownies, cupcakes, and even lion-shaped cake
pops! Certain baked goods sold better and faster than other
baked goods. In the end we raised $162 for the Pediatric
Trauma Program.
Freedom and Free Pancakes On Independence Day, we assisted our fellow Kiwanis with a
pancake breakfast. We provided food for people participating in
the Freedom Run at Ladera Ranch. Volunteers helped set up and
cook delicious pancakes and sausages. The money fundraised for
this event went to Laura’s House, an organization that helps to
heal and care for those affected by domestic violence.

With only the last month of summer left, school is starting up really soon which means Key
club will start up as well. I’ve already had one year’s worth of experience of being president
and I am looking forward to this upcoming school year. I am so humbled and excited for my
term, returning as president. Going into this year, I’m confident about making our club
successful and inclusive. I’ve learned a lot from my mistakes, drafted of new ideas, and
reconstructed a really positive attitude about our club. My goal this year is to retain and
increase membership, increase our club’s hours, have more fundraisers, and have more joint
events or projects with other clubs within our division. I’m very happy and blessed to have
such an awesome board again this year. All of them are so dedicated and excited for Key
Club and it fuels my drive to be the very best president I can be. I hope for the very best and
I can’t wait for school—well not for school, really—but for Key Club to start up again!
Another Year
Summer is coming to a close as the school year is rapidly approaching. El Toro Key Clubbers
are relaxing and doing service! August 19th is our Pacific Symphony Event, which many of our
members enjoy. We help people experience the wonderful aspects of music with various
booths and enjoy a concert at the end as well! The 2012-2013 school year is coming fast,
and with that means opportunities to gain members! Club Rush is always extremely fun with
our Key Club doing walking sign ups and clothespin tagging. The new year is always exciting
especially with new and returning members. The Fall season has some of the best events
including Harvest Festival. I look forward to meeting many new people and volunteering at
our great events! El Toro has a lot of goals for this term, such as more fundraising, more
members, and even birthday celebrations! We have a lot of work ahead of us, but I have
complete faith in our board and club because I know that they are amazing! I love the
dedication and willingness to serve others that our club acquires, and I hope that the next
year is filled with just that: love, dedication, service, and fun!
Key Club Kick-Start
[President]
As school is approaching, the time for Laguna Key Clubbers to help out is now! On August
9th, a few Key Clubbers woke at an early hour to help out the PTSA make registration packets
for our Hawk Walk. Putting the packets might have been monotonous as it was going in
circles—picking up fliers in order over and over again. However, it was definitely worth it
since we were the fastest group, finishing two hours early! The parents were kind enough to
offer us free lunches consisting of tacos, grapes, and fountain drinks. It was nice to be
rewarded after working in a non-air conditioned room for so long. Later this month, we will
be helping out at registration, passing out textbooks and helping kids find their lockers.
Future Plans
For a week, Laguna Key Clubbers volunteered at the Orange County Down Syndrome
Association 2012 Bike Camp. We woke up bright and early to help teach kids with down
syndrome how to ride a bike. We used specialized bikes that had a handle on the back so
that volunteers could help stabilize the rider and a roller on the back instead of a wheel.
These rollers not only provided more stability for the bike and rider, but also allowed the bike
to slightly wobble back and forth like a normal bike would. When the rider became
accustomed to the bike, we allowed him or her on a two-wheeled bike. It was one of the
best experiences I had as I got to see the kids conquer their fears of falling off their bikes and
ride their bikes with smiling faces as their parents cheered them on!

On Saturday July 28th, Tesoro Key Club
volunteered for the Families Forward Food
Drive. We were assigned to the Fresh & Easy
Store in Lake Forest, where we set up to give
shoppers a small food list. Those who were
interested in helping out with the food drive
would go in and pick up a few items for
Families Forward along with their regular
shopping items. At the end of the day we
collected about three shopping carts with
oodles of food. We then drove the food up
to the Families Forward warehouse in Irvine to
be packed and sorted. The event was lots of
fun, and it was great knowing that the food
we collected was going to feed families in
need from all over Orange County.

July has been a productive month for THHS Key Club. We kicked it
off with the Fourth of July Pancake Breakfast at El Toro High
School. Following the Pancake Breakfast was the Orphan Care
event at Saddleback Church on the 8th and 21st of July, where our
members played with and talked to children as well as
brightened their days. On July 21st, we had a bake sale at
Albertsons in Trabuco Canyon, where we raised a total of $344.44
for Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP). At the end of the month, we
headed over to the DCM at Costeau Park, where we found out
that we had raised the second largest amount of money in
District 41 South! Go Lions!!!
A Summer of Productivity
Future Plans With school almost starting again, we are preparing for an awesome
year full of fun, caring, and service. To recognize the hard work of our
members, we will try to get our school’s approval on sashes for seniors
whom have at least fifty hours of community service during the year. We
also plan to recognize Key Clubbers whom do more than twenty-five
hours of service. Another goal that we board members have is to not
only to increase the number of active members in Trabuco Hills’s Key
Club, but also to improve the relationship between our members. I want
THHS Key Club to be a large group of friends, not a group of small
cliques. To get everyone involved, we will play ice breakers after club
meetings which will get different members working together. Overall, I
am very excited for the school year to start and for Key Club to improve.

I deeply appreciate your continuous
roars, lions! You make the newsletter a
reality. Wow, third issue already! From
here on, I hope the issues get better
and better, so keep up the writing and
picture taking—appeal is everything
(to me).
For some of us Key Clubbers, this is the
last summer of our high school careers
/sob. And as cliché as it is, let’s make
the most of it! As seniors, let’s make our
mark memorable! And for all the
youngin’s, I hope you all enjoy the rest
of your high school career and Key
Club experience. I regret not being more
active in my young high school years. I look
forward to seeing my awkwardness
bloom into something better. Luls,
/forced socialization. Ok. Do your AP
homework, kiddos. And don’t forget
about your Key Club commitments
and responsibilities.
