FOREWORDThis document is equivalent to the RENAULT SAS and RENAULT VI Groups documents D45 1333.It must not be modified without prior consultation with the Normalisation Department of these Groups. It is in conformity with the agreement reached between these Groups and PSA PEUGEOT CITROEN inOctober 2003.

It allows tests to be performed in conformity with USA regulation FMVSS No302 and normeNF ISO 3795.

    1. OBJECT AND FIELD OF APPLICATION

The object of this method is to determine the horizontal combustion speed and the type of combustion ofmaterials situated in the passenger compartment interior.

The test may be carried out on the surface material, on a composite that consists of this surface materialbonded to a subjacent material, as well as on the subjacent materials.

    2. PRINCIPLE

Ignite the end of a test specimen held horizontally by U shaped jaws. Observe the type on combustion and

determine the speed of combustion between the two reference marks.

    3. EQUIPMENT

    3.1. COMBUSTION CHAMBER

The combustion chamber, preferably in stainless steel, of internal dimensions 381 mm x 356 mm x 203 mm(see appendix 1).

The front face of this chamber comprises a fire-proof observation window which may cover the whole frontface and which may also be used as an access panel.

The lower face of the chamber is pierced with 10 holes, of 19 mm diameter for ventilation, the upper partcomprises a ventilation opening 12,7 mm high all around.

The chamber rests on four legs 10 mm high. On one side, the chamber may include an orifice for theintroduction of the trimmed test specimen, on the opposite side, an opening provides an entry for the gas inletpipe. The melted material is collected in a tray placed at the bottom of the chamber between the ventilationholes without covering them.

During the actual test, this combustion chamber must be placed in an enclosure at a temperature of23C 5C and an air speed V < 0,05 m s-1 ; it may be placed under a laboratory hood (3.12.) designed toevacuate the combustion fumes.

    3.2. SAMPLE HOLDER

The sample holder consists of two metal plates in the form of a U or frames in corrosion resistant material (seeAppendix 2).

The lower plate carries dowels, the upper plate carries corresponding locating holes to ensure that the testspecimen is fixed securely the dowels are also used as reference marks for measuring the start and finish of thecombustion.

The lower part of the test specimen must be at a distance of 178 mm above the base plate. The distance Thedistance between the front edge of the test specimen and the end of the chamber must be 22 mm.

3.3. GRILLEOptional grille for the application of regulation FMVSS-No302.

The use of the grille is mandatory for the application of the norme NF ISO 3795.

This grille consists of a sample holder (3.2.) and heat resistant wires of 0,25 mm extended across the sample

holder at 25 mm intervals (see Appendix 3)

    3.4. GAS BURNER

The small source of flames is represented by a Bunsen burner of 9.5 mm 5,00+ mm internal diameter.

This burner is placed in the combustion chamber so that the centre of the nozzle is 19 mm 1 mm below thecentre of the lower edge of the test specimen.

    3.5. TEST GAS

The gas supplied to the burner must have a calorific value of approximately 38 MJ/m 3 (for example natural gas).

    3.6. CONDITIONED ENCLOSURE

    at 23C 2C and 50% 5% relative humidity.

    3.7. CHRONOMETER.

Two chronometers, accurate to 0,5 s, for the application of norme NF ISO 3795 or accurate to 1 s in othercases.

    3.8. MEASURING INSTRUMENT,

    rule accurate to 0,5 mm.

    3.9. OVEN WITH CIRCULATING AIR,

capable of reaching a temperature of 100C 2C or any other temperature specified by the manufacturer forageing.

    3.10. HUMID OVEN,

    regulated to 40C 2C and 95% 5% relative humidity.

    3.11. METAL COMB

with 7 to 8 teeth, with rounded points, every 25 millimetres and a length of at least 110 mm.

    3.12. OPTIONAL HOOD

3.12.1. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE HOOD FOR THE APPLICATION OF NORME NF ISO 3795

The combustion chamber may be placed under a laboratory hood providing that the internal volume of this hood

is at least 20 times, but no more than 110 times greater than the volume of the combustion chamber and thatnone of the dimensions (height, width or depth) is 2,5 times greater than either of the other two. Before the test, the vertical air speed under the hood is measured at 100 mm from the front and rear of thelocation anticipated for the combustion chamber. It must be between 0,10 m/s and 0,30 m/s (or any other value stipulated by the legislation of the country), so asto avoid any possible hindrance to the operator with the combustion products. The hood, adjusted in this manner, operates during the test. It is possible to use a naturally ventilated hood withthe appropriate air speed. If these conditions are not met, the hood must not be operated.

3.12.2 CHARACTERISTICS OF THE HOOD FOR THE APPLICATION OF REGULATION FMVSS-No302

There are no specific requirements linked to hood.

However, during the test there must be no air currents in the chamber of V < 0,05 m s -1.

    Vair between 0,1 m/s-1.and 0,3 m/s-1

    4. PREPARATIONS OF TEST SPECIMENS

Test single or composite materials all or part of which are to be found less than a depth of 13 mm from thepassenger compartment.Any material that does not adhere to another material at each point of contact is tested alone.Any material that does adhere to another (other) material(s) at all points of contact is tested with the othermaterial(s), as a composite.

4.1. CUT OUT THE TEST SPECIMENS

356 mm x 100 20+ mm from the material to be tested (see Appendix 4).

For test specimens to be subjected to ageing(4.10.), age the material and cut out the test specimen afterageing. This allows for any potential shrinkage.

    4.2. FOR REGULATION FMVSS-No302

When the available length is less than 356 mm, use the available length, on a width of 102 mm.When the available width is less than 102 mm, use the available width, on a length of 356 mm.In cases to the contrary, see 4.5.

For norme NF ISO 3795 :

When the form and dimensions of a product do not allow the sampling of a test specimen with the dimensionsgiven, it is necessary to comply with the following minimum dimensions :

For test specimens with a width between 3 mm and 60 mm, the length must be 356 mm. In this case, the material is tested on the width of the product.

For test specimens with a width between 60 mm and 102 mm, the length must be at least 140 mm. Inthis case, the available combustion distance corresponds to the length of the test specimen, themeasurement commencing at the first reference mark.

Test specimens of a width less than 60 mm and a length less than 356 mm, as well as those with a

width between 60 mm and 1002

    0

    +

mm, but with a length less than 138 mm, and those with a width ofless than 3 mm, cannot be tested by this method.

4.3. THICKNESS OF THE TEST SPECIMENIt is that of the single or composite material, except where this is greater than 13 mm.

In this case, the material is slit in such a way as to give a thickness of 13 mm measured from the surface

    nearest to the passenger compartment.

    Explanatory example

Material A has a contact surface not adhering to that of material B and is tested separately. One section ofmaterial B is, at the most, 13 mm from the space constituting the passenger compartment and materials B andC adhere to each of the contact points; therefore B and C are tested as a composite material. The cut is madein the material, as shown in the above figure, so as to obtain a test specimen 13 mm thick.

4.4. WHEN IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO OBTAIN A FLAT TEST SPECIMENbecause the part being tested is curved, cut out the test specimen so that its thickness does not exceed13 mmat any point.

4.5 IN THE CASE WHERE THE PARTto be tested is too small for application of FMVSS-No302 the test can be carried out on an additional testspecimen : representative in terms of material, process, colour, etc.

Produce a test specimen with an identical composition to the constituent(s) of the part, the length of which must be 356 mm, the width 100 20

    + mm

and a thickness equal to the maximum thickness of the part, within the limit of 13 mm.

4.6. IN THE CASE OF A HOMOGENEOUS OR ISOTROPIC MATERIALselect a minimum of 3 test specimens (5 test specimens for norme NF ISO 3795).

In the case of an anisotropic material, take a series of 3 test specimens minimum (5 test specimens for normeNF ISO 3795) in the longitudinal direction and a series of 3 test specimens minimum (5 test specimens fornorme NF ISO 3795) in the transverse direction.

    4.7. WHEN THE MATERIAL

has a velour surface, place it on a flat surface and comb it twice against nap with the comb (3.11).

4.8. ON EACH TEST SPECIMEN AND/OR ON THE METAL SUPPORT,draw a reference line 38 mm from one end of the test specimen and a second reference line 254 mm from thefirst, when the dimensions of the test specimen allow it.

    4.9. IN GENERAL,

condition the test specimens in the enclosure (3.6.) for a minimum of 24 hours.

In the case of highly hygroscopic materials, the conditioning may be extended to 72 hours.

4.10. CARRY OUT, IF SPECIFIED BY THE MANUFACTURER, THE FOLLOWING AGEING CYCLES :

100 h at 100C 2C in the oven (3.9.) for the first series,

100 h at 40C 2C and 95% 2% relative humidity in the oven (3.10.) for the second series,

or any other condition specified by the manufacturer.

Condition as indicated in 4.9., sample the two series of combustible test specimens, then burn according to

the following method of operation (see 5.).

    5. METHOD OF OPERATION

This method of operation applies to new or aged test specimens, according to the requirements of themanufacturer.

In the case of USA regulation FMVSS-No302, carry out the test without the grille. If the test specimen has atendency to sag, do the test again with the grille and take into account this last result.

5.1. PLACE THE TEST SPECIMEN IN THE SAMPLE HOLDER (3.2.),according to Appendix 5, so that the two sides and one end are held by the arms of the sample holder, and so

that the free end is where the first idenification line is drawn, in conformity with Appendix 2; the surface of thetest specimen which is closest to the passenger compartment must be turned towards the base. When both faces are close to the passenger compartment, each face must be tested.

Place the whole assembly in the centre of the combustion chamber (3.1.). Check that the test specimen isactually horizontal.

Adjust the Bunsen burner (3.4.) so that the height of the flame is 38 mm. The burner air inlet is closed. The flame must burn for 1 min in order to stabilise, before the commencement of the test.

Start the chronometer (3.7.) when the test specimen is in contact with the flame, extinguish it at the end of 15seconds.

Note : Check the time taken between the cutting off of the gas and the extinction of the flame.

5.2. START THE SECOND CHRONOMETERwhen the front of the flame reaches the first reference mark 38 mm from the free end. Observe the propagationof the flame front on the face that burns quickest (upper or lower face). Note the time t (in seconds) necessaryfor the flame front to reach the second reference mark 254 mm from the first.

Note all peculiarities in the combustion of the material, such as flash on the surface, irregular propagation, slow combustion, combustion with fumes, formation of droplets, different combustion speeds in the differentlayers of the test specimen, separation of the layers, etc.

5.3. IF THE FLAME IS EXTINGUISHED NATURALLYbefore the second reference mark, determine the time t for this combustion. Using the rule (3.8.) measure length

of the test specimen which has been burnt (in millimetres), which means the greatest distance travelled by theflame front starting from the first reference mark.

Note also all the peculiarities of combustion.

5.4. IF THE FLAME IS EXTINGUISHED NATURALLYbefore the first reference mark, note this fact.

5.5. IN THE CASE OF THE MATERIAL

splitting during the preparation of the test specimen, do not take into consideration the flame front spreading overthe surface thus created by the cutting out.

5.6. DURING A SERIES OF TESTSor when repeating a test, ensure that the combustion chamber and the sample holder are at a maximumtemperature of 30C before the start of the following test.

    6. EXPRESSION OF RESULTS

    6.1. TYPE OF COMBUSTION

    Non combustible

Type A : the material refuses to burn or else is extinguished as soon as the flame front is no longer incontact with the Bunsen burner.

    Self- Extinguishable

Type B : The material burns, but the combustion stops before the flame as reached the firstreference mark.

Type C : The material burns, but ceases to burn less than 60 seconds after starting the chronometer, and has not burnt more than 50 millimetres from the first reference mark.

Type D : The material burns, but the flame is extinguished between the two reference

marks, except in the preceding case.

    Combustible

Type E : The combustion continues as far as the second reference mark.

    6.2. SPEED OF COMBUSTION

Calculate as shown below the combustion speeds for types D and E and take the most unfavourable resultobtained with a series of new and aged test specimens, in both length and width (material anisotropic) with oneface or the other (material with both faces exposed).

If combustion has reached the second reference mark, type E, the combustion speed V, expressed in

millimetres per minute (mm/min) for each test specimen is obtained by means of the following formula :

    t

    60.254V =

where : t = duration of the combustion, in seconds, to burn 254 mm (distance between reference marks).

If the combustion has stopped before the second reference mark, type D or if the size of the sampledoes not allow the application of the 2nd. reference mark at 254 mm from the first, the combustionspeed V, expressed in millimetres per minute (mm/min) is obtained by means of the following formula :

    't

    60.L'V =

where : L = burnt length, in millimetrest = duration of the combustion of length L, in seconds.
