Steel Window Association - New Steel Windows Offer a Snug FitThe new W4 range of steel window is ideal for fitting in stone mullions, since they easily replaces direct glazing.Available from members of the Steel Window Association, the W4 has been designed as a refinement of the W30, a steel window that can meet Part L of theBuilding Regulations.

SWA product development group member Trevor Woskett was one of the team behind theW4. “We needed an equal leg section because in the market that we are in which quite ofteninvolves stone mullions, there aren't always rebates,” he explained.“Sometimes where they have perhaps been direct glazed, they're just straight through. Theequal leg section which we've added to the suite enables us to put the window straight inthere without any infill bars behind, or anything like that.“Quite often it's just a slot that's direct glazed into it so that we can now cut out the old glassand introduce a very slim line steel section that will hold a double glazed unit.”W4 is an equal leg system and as a result W4 always has a 12mm gap behind it and thisnormally fits into a rebate in timber or in stone.“The sight lines for this window are even smaller than the previous double glazed window.The slim sections of the steel window are one of the big positives and architects andhouseholders love it. Swish - Maximum CSH Points

Swish Building Products has obtained certification to the new Responsible SourcingStandard, BES 6001 details of which can be seen at the Green Book Live website.

Swish became one of the first materials companies outside the aggregates industry to passthe assessment for BES6001 and did so with a “Very Good” rating. This means that Swishcan now offer new build customers maximum points under the Materials section of theCode for Sustainable Homes for fascias, cladding and skirting boards (Mat 2&3). Until nowthis could only be achieved by using FSC timber.

However developers now have the option of specifying products that will gain themmaximum CSH points as well as lasting the lifetime of the building without the need formaintenance.

The BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing Standard looks at the Environmental, Quality, Healthand Safety and other control systems that a company has in place, which includes anassessment of the care it takes in selecting its supply chain partners for their commitmentto the same ethical principles.

The achievement of this standard shows that Swish is serious about its responsibilities toits customers and to the wider construction industry in ensuring that it sources it’smaterials in a responsible and ethical manner.

FibreGrid - ‘Warm to touch handrail’ installed at Railway Station

FibreGrid have recently installed their on the wall Building Regulations compliant handrailsystem to the steps leading up to two platforms at Bury St Edmunds Railway Station inSuffolk.

The FibreGrid Installation Team also installed the product, which was completed duringnight works that lasted for four nights. The Team removed an old powder coated metalhandrail system which did not comply to the Building Regulations requirement that itmust be “not cold to touch” and replaced with the FibreRail system.

Whilst the FibreRail handrail system can be installed using standard uprights to be freestanding, the ‘on the wall’ components and tube were used so as to not impede thestaircase. The installation was quite complicated as the station was pretty quite old andthe walls had many twists and turns but showed the versatility of the FibreRail system.

Combination of materials helps Hunter Douglas create bespoke solution

The stunning new £35m Hengrove Leisure Centre, Bristol was opened in February.Boasting ten lanes and a moveable floor, the Olympic sized swimming pool was built toa high specification.

The sound proofing properties of the Hunter Douglas linear wood panels were ideal for thisapplication. Panels are provided with an acoustic felt which is glued at the top of the joint.The open panel system chosen for the swimming pool ensures that the ceiling retains therequired linear appearance whilst still offering a high degree of sound absorption.

Air source heat pumpsHitachi’s Yutaki-M single fan air source heat pumpcan achieve an output of 8.2kW at typical UKdesign temperatures of -3 C outside temperatureand +45 C heating flow temperature. The singlefan unit is efficient too, with a CoP of 4.43 (atA7/W45) and typical seasonal performance factorbetween 2.5 and 3.5 for a heating and domestichot water system. The unit is only 800mm inheight and is around 40% smaller than the twin fanmodel.

Hot water cylindersNu-Heat has developed a range of compact hotwater cylinders designed to contribute to highefficiency levels when used with the single-fan

heat pump. The EnergyMaster HP 215 has a 215litre capacity and is sized to sit on top of a 100litre buffer tank within a relatively compact space.The coil is one-third smaller than in Nu-Heat’slarger cylinders, as the output of the single-fanheat pump is low enough for this to be practical.Additionally it has a 60°C flow capability. TheEnergyMaster HP 255S cylinder is a solar version,with some additional volume at the bottom of thecylinder, which contains a solar coil. The solarvolume has been designed for a single solar in-roofpanel system, which is ideal for smaller propertiesincluding apartments and terraced houses. Solar thermalA single panel solar thermal option givesstreamlined installation and cost-effectiveness.

Nu-Heat has recently started supplying a singlepanel that is the same width but slightly longerthan a typical panel – although it will still fitcomfortably on a standard roof. The larger‘Heliostar 252’ panel has approximately 15% moreoutput than the smaller panel ‘Heliostar 218’. Fora smaller dwelling such as a flat, where thehousehold uses about 100 litres of hot water dailyat 50°C, the panel is likely to produce about half ofthe annual demand. The figure of 50% is an annualaverage, and in practice, around 90% of thedemand will be met in July and 10% in December.The new panel is optimized for use with theEnergyMaster HP 255S heat pump cylinder. The existing three-layer felt roof on the 30+ yearold building was widely failing and needed to bereplaced so Devon County Council’s appointedconsultant, NPS, specified Kemper System’s

solvent-free 2K-PUR cold liquid applied systemalong with the company’s Kempertherm PIRinsulation board. Main contractor, SkinnerConstruction Ltd, appointed Stormforce Roofing to

install the roofing system, in a project that wascarried out both during the school holiday andwithin term time.Andrew Sturgess from Skinner Construction Ltdexplains: “Obviously having children on site whilethe work was on-going presented some health andsafety challenges. The Kemperol 2K-PUR systemwas the ideal choice in this regard: as a cold-applied wet-on-wet system it is quick to install andavoids the need for any hot works on site. What’smore, the choice of the solvent-free product whichis based on a castor oil formulation means thatthere are no unpleasant odours during or after theproject, allowing staff and pupils to get on withschool life on a business-as-usual footing.”Stormforce installed the new roofing system ontop of the old substrate with minimal preparation,effectively recycling it as a vapour control layer.The insulation board was then cut to shape and laiddirectly onto the existing roof before installation ofthe 2K-PUR system in a single process. The resultis a durable yet flexible waterproof membranewhich will not delaminate and will keep Redhills’children dry for at least the next 25 years.

Hygiene, Vandalism and Safety - Itmight surprise you to find that recycledplastic is less flammable than wood,and is resistant to most chemicals.Being non-absorbent, it is very hygienicand cleans easily with commonhousehold cleaners. Graffiti can beremoved with WD40.

UV Stable - UV stability is high, unlikethe old UPVC, which tended to degradeon the surface into a white dust andbecome brittle. Kedel’s recycled plasticUV protection is graded 7 or 8 on ascale of 1-8, and fading is negligible -only about 5% over 10 years.

Marco plans to set off fromFolkestone on the weekend ofSeptember 15/16th as soon aswinds allow, and is aiming toland near Wimereux in Francearound four hours later.The ambitious journey has itsroots in Marco’s own battleagainst testicular cancer and isin aid of a charity called KiKa,which funds research intochildren’s cancer. His last check-up in August 2011 finallyshowed him to be cancer-free.“It’s been a tough, long battleand I’ve been lucky to winagainst cancer – but the sadfact is that although treatmentshave improved since the 1960swhen the cure rate was around30%, one in four childrendiagnosed with cancer will stilllose their fight,” explainedMarco. “KiKa has been set upto fund innovative research thatnot only focuses on treating

cancer but does it in a more‘child-friendly’ way bydeveloping therapies thatdestroy only cancer cells andspare healthy ones.”Marco’s challenge now is tocomplete the 50km Channelcrossing and raise sponsorshipto support KiKa’s aim ofincreasing chances of recoveryfor children suffering fromcancer from 75% to 95% by2025.
