Constructed of I-shaped steel profilesencompassed in Rockwool insulationand an OSB lining on the inside,RockShell is Passivhaus certified andachieves a typical U-Value of0.143W/m2K, with calculations at TheDaffodils indicating 0.156W/m2Kwould be expected. Colin Cole, Chief Executive, LioncourtHomes, comments: “We arecontinually seeking new methods ofconstruction that enable us to deliverhigh quality and more thermallyefficient homes, whilst increasing thespeed of build. In spite of this beingthe first time RockShell has beenconstructed in the UK, we wereextremely impressed with the ease ofinstallation and seamless integrationof the system with other standardbuilding components.” At The Daffodils, RockShell was usedto build a two storey four bedroomdetached house, although the systemis suitable for construction up to twoand a half storeys high. As one of thelast houses to be built on the 13 plotsite, access was restricted andmanoeuvre of materials tight. However, because RockShell has fewcomponents and is delivered to site in‘kit form’, it was quick and easy toconstruct the system with virtually nowaste generated. Moreover, it requires

no specialist equipment which furtherreduced the space challenge and on-site health and safety risks. With the building envelope completedand watertight in just 10 days,Lioncourt Homes will now proceedwith an exterior brick finish. RockShellis also compatible with a wide rangeof other exterior finishes, includingcladding and render. Matthew Bromley, UK BusinessManager for the RockShell WallSystem, concludes: “Since its launch,RockShell has attracted much interestfrom the residential and commercialsector. This first development istestament to the flexibility of thesystem to be retrospectively designedto meet an existing specification butwe also expect even higher levels ofthermal performance to be achievedwhen RockShell is designed in fromplanning. “The installation team requiredminimal training with on-sitesupervision confirming that the systemis extremely quick and easy to install.Overall we were really pleased withthe process, from design through toinstallation.”For further information on theRockShell wall system please visitwww.rockshell.uk.com or [email protected].

Lioncourt HomesCompletes UK’sFirst RockShell

House Lioncourt Homes, one of the UK’sleading independent housingdevelopers, has piloted the RockShelllow energy wall system fromRockwool at ‘The Daffodils’ – itslatest exclusive housing developmentin Newent, Gloucester. The RockShellwas completed in just seven days,Lioncourt Homes pioneered the useof RockShell to become the first inthe UK to benefit from the high levelsof thermal insulation and energyefficiency which the system canachieve. As construction work was alreadyunderway at The Daffodils whenRockShell was launched to market,Lioncourt Homes worked withRockwool to retrospectively designRockShell as the building fabric forone of its most popular house styles. In doing so, the system enabledLioncourt Homes to achieve theequivalent of Level 6 in the Code forSustainable Homes for the buildingenvelope.

Specifier: Capita Symonds

“We like the fact that MarleyEternit continues to manufacture

Profile 6 in the UKand that fibre

cement is much lower

maintenance thantimber.

”David Wilcock, Senior Associate Director,

Capita Symonds

Marley Eternit Profile6 has been specified

to create a sustainable, low maintenance

rainscreen cladding solution at a landmark

primary school project in Nottingham.

The £2.8m scheme at the Robin Hood

Primary School is anew two-storey

creative hub, whichincludes classrooms

,

a library, an ICT suite, and an art studio.

Slate Blue and Black Profile 6 was

specified by architects CapitaSymonds

to clad the walls above firstfloor level.

Sustainability was atthe heart of the new

school building and Senior Associate

Director at Capita Symonds David Wilcock

explains: “The school wanted their building

to express their sustainable principles, and

for this reason they originally requested

timber cladding. However, we

recommended Profile 6 as a more durable

alternative becauseit can achieve an A+

rating in the BRE Green Guide.”

The building is constructed using a Steel

Framing System (SFS), with walls

consisting of a double layer ofplasterboard

internally, 150mm of Rockwool insulation

within the SFS zone and an outer facing

cementitious board.Marley Eternit Profile

is fixed to the steel frame usinga top hat

(‘T’ section) supportstructure on the first

floor, incorporating a rear ventilated cavity.

The walls achieveda U-value of 0.2 W/m2K.

Robin Hood Primary School’s Head

Teacher Andrew Sharp comments: “The

rainscreen cladding looks fantastic and the

fact that it is such a sustainable material fits

perfectly with our policy to minimise the

school’s carbon footprint.”

The project was commissioned by

Nottingham City Council and undertaken

by the Inspired Spaces consortium,with

construction carried out by Carillion and

architecture by Capita Symonds. It was

part of the BuildingSchools for the Futu

re

(BSF) programme.

Marley Eternit is theonly UK manufacturer

of fibre cement products, meaning it has

a smaller carbon footprint than foreign

sourced ranges. UK manufactured fibre

cement profiled sheeting achieves an A+

rating in the BRE (Building Research

Establishment) Green Guide to

Specification based on generic rating for

UK produced profiled air cured fibre

cement sheeting (outer skin) – (Element

Ref: 1012550002).

GEO-FIX – The Box Clever Choice!Geo-Fix, the market leading Brush applied Paving Jointing Compound available exclusively fromEverbuild, is now available in an additional 7.5kg boxed size! When it was first introduced to the market Geo-Fix broke the mould for being the original PavingJointing Compound and now the brand has changed the rules again with the introduction of ‘Geo-Fixin a Box’. With the majority of competitor products coming available in plastic tubs, ‘Geo-Fix in a box’disrupts the ‘norm’ of what is expected from a typical Paving Jointing Compound. Everbuild believe that‘Geo-Fix in a box’ offers something new and innovative to other products on the market whichcontinues to keep the brand fresh at the forefront of both customer and user minds.‘Geo-Fix in a box’ is exactly the same great Geo-Fix product that customers have come to know andtrust simply with a new packaging twist and a brand new size. The 7.5kg box has been expertlydesigned to be extremely strong so that it will not buckle or collapse and it can be stored, stacked andcarried with complete confidence that the product will remain effective and the packaging will alwayslook the part. There is also no plastic in the outer packaging making the box much easier to disposeof - once the product has been used the box can simply be collapsed and thrown into the recycling bin!In addition to all this, the truly clever thing about ‘Geo-Fix in a box’ is the convenience of its smaller7.5kg size. Unlike the larger quantities commonly found of Paving Jointing Compound, ‘Geo-Fix in abox’ gives the user the choice to buy just the quantity that they need! Ideal for patch ups, repairs andsmaller jobs, this new size enables the user to complete the job before curing takes effect, hencereducing wastage once the job has been completed. ‘Geo-fox in a box’ available in both buff and greyto suit a variety of customer needs. So in order to minimise wastage and do your bit for the environment choose Geo-Fix 7.5kg – the boxclever choice!Web: www.everbuild.co.uk

Aurubis - Nordic Brass Townscape

The new Domkyrkoforum visitor centre, facing the Cathedral in the Swedish city of Lund, uses AurubisArchitectural’s Nordic Brass panels to create a series of contemporary forms, generating new vistasand public spaces within its historic setting.Designed by architect Carmen Izquierdo, the brass and glass intervention links together several oldbuildings to form a unified complex. It presents a strongly-defined entry forecourt to the street witha Nordic Brass clad canopy, simply continuing the existing roof line, then continues back to thecathedral square, terminating with the auditorium and its iconic funnel window reaching up towardsthe cathedral towers. Nordic Brass was chosen by the architect for the new building’s external skin as“a natural material that gives a rich, vibrant surface. As the material mellows with age, the building willgradually blend in with the townscape.”

Other copper alloys are also available, in addition to Nordic Brass: the new Nordic Bronze andinnovative Nordic Royal - an alloy with a long-lasting golden colour. Aurubis Architectural’s range ofsurfaces includes Nordic Green and Nordic Blue variable intensities of pre-patination, developed withproperties and colours based on the same brochantite mineralogy found in natural patinas all over theworld. There are no limitations on the length of pre-patinated copper sheet or strip because whole coilsare treated on the production line, not just limited size sheets, enabling them to be used for long-stripinstallation techniques. Other surfaces include Nordic Standard ‘mill finish’ and Nordic Brown pre-oxidised copper with either light or dark brown oxidisation that otherwise takes time to develop in theenvironment.

The company achieved revenues of8.7bn euros in 2010 and has an enviabletrack record in helping blue chiporganisations enhance their businessprocesses. Capgemini creates anddelivers business and technologysolutions that fit the needs of theirclients and drive the results they want.Capgemini takes its environmental andcorporate social responsibilities veryseriously and has defined andimplemented a range of measuresdesigned to minimise its carbonfootprint. As well as being certified toEMAS and ISO 14001, it leads byexample and has set a target of achievinga 20 per cent energy reduction target by2014 from its 2008 levels. As part of this programme, in January2011 the company appointed Craig Hallas its UK Energy efficiency manager. Hallexplains, ‘Capgemini Group spends in theregion of 40m euros a year on utilitiesand 70 per cent of our electricity usageis linked to our data centres, in which wehost our clients’ IT equipment. One ofmy first tasks when joining the company

was to devise a strategy that wouldreduce the amount of energy consumedwithin the 14 Capgemini locations in theUK.’Although the company already had abuilding management system (BMS) inplace, it relied heavily on humaninteraction to ensure that energy use wasbeing correctly controlled. Also, with nomonitoring facility available it was verydifficult to see exactly how much energywas being used. Hall quickly realised that he needed atool that could monitor and diagnoseenergy patterns and use, and called inTrend Controls to discuss how it couldhelp achieve these objectives. Hecomments, ‘I’ve worked with Trend inthe past and consider them to be themarket leader in building energymanagement systems (BEMS). After ourinitial meeting, it was clear that TrendEnergy Manager would help facilitateenhanced interaction and achieve betterresults.’Trend Energy Manager is a powerfulsoftware based system that can be used

to monitor energy use within a building.Energy and facilities managers (FMs) canuse it to keep a close eye on the gas andelectricity consumed by their buildingservices and the effect it has on theircarbon footprint. Meter readings andother Trend BEMS variables that arelogged and automatically uploaded areits main source of data and it providesrapid reporting of incidences of energyoveruse or indeed issues with plantmonitored by Trend. It can even beconfigured to suggest probable causes, which FMs can then act upon.It is also a highly flexible solution. TrendControl’s product manager, Dave Fieldstates, ‘Trend Energy Manager can bescaled to suit the size of application andit is a viable proposition for relativelysmall single buildings as well as largecampuses and nationwide estates. As a

web-based package it can be accessedby authorised users from virtually anylocation, via the Internet or anorganisation’s Intranet.’So as to better understand how energyis being used in Capgemini’s UKbuildings, Hall and his team have enteredinto their Trend Energy Manager a varietyof information such as utility tariffs, CO2factor and cost and consumptiontargets. Normalisation criteria are alsospecified to allow comparisons betweendifferent areas within a building ordifferent buildings, or to benchmarkconsumption against specific targets.Degree day data is also called up andentered to allow for differences inweather conditions when comparingthe current year’s energy consumptionwith that of a previous year.

Trend helps Capgemini takecontrol of its energy useHeadquartered in Paris and with operations in 40 countries, Capgemini is one of the world’s

largest management consulting, outsourcing, technology and professional services companies, with more than 115,000 staff.

SE CONTROLS takes the heat out ofnew London apartment developmentSafety and comfort are at the heart ofa major new residential development byLinden Homes in Hammersmith,London, which is using a combinedsmoke and natural ventilation solutionfrom SE Controls to protect residentsin the multi-storey apartment building. To provide a safe means of escape forresidents in the event of a fire as well asenabling fire fighters to enter thebuilding, SE Controls developed thesmoke ventilation system to removesmoke from corridors and stairwells byusing a mix of natural air buoyancyventing and fan extraction throughsmoke shafts. On floor one to five, smoke ventilationis provided by extract fans located in thebuilding’s cycle store, with replacementair being supplied through ground floorair inlet shaft, while the sixth floor isvented by a 1.5m2 vent in the top floorcorridor and by a similar arrangementat the head of the stair. In addition to smoke ventilation, the SEControls’ solution is also designed toprovide mechanically assisted naturalventilation to help maintain a

comfortable temperature within thebuilding’s corridors. As central heatingand hot water distribution pipe workfeeds each apartment via the corridors, the potential for the corridors tobecome overheated in some situationshas also been addressed by the system. On the first five floors, extract fans, which run at half speed, remove warmair from the corridors and the system’ssmoke dampers are opened as requiredby the building’s natural ventilationcontrol panel. On the sixth floor, adedicated tamper proof thermostatcontrols the lobby vent while hoodedvents allow ventilation during inclementweather conditions. The integrated smoke and naturalventilation control strategy wasdeveloped by SE Controls to meet thespecific needs of the apartment buildingand involved the use of nine OS2controllers and tamper proof manualcontrol points, as well as a range oftemperature sensors and smokesensors, all of which are linked to themain system control panel with afailsafe battery back up.

Under normal operation, the naturalventilation (NV) system is activebetween 08:00 and 20:00, whichprovides ventilation and corridor coolingto the building. The NV controller scansthe temperature sensors and allows theend of corridor Automatic OpeningVents (AOVs) to open when required. However, in the event of a fire, wherethe system is triggered either by asmoke sensor or manually activated, allNV functions are stopped and the OS2controller for the affected zone signalsthe fans to run at full speed. www.secontrols.com

SE Controls’ Project Leader, BrettCave, explained: “Smoke ventilationis a safety critical factor inresidential building design as it notonly aids escape and enhancessafety, but also assists the fireservice by improving access to thebuilding. This project is one of anincreasingly large number where wehave developed a combined smokeand natural ventilation solutioncontrol strategy that not only enableshigh safety levels to be maintained, but also improves the environment ofthe building’s occupants.

Stylish cable tidy solutionD-Line is having its mini-trunkingproduct supplied by Alltrade forinstallation in more than 1000 propertiesbeing fitted by SIS Northern. When SIS Northern, the North-Eastbased TV System specialists, wascontracted to upgrade the TVdistribution systems in properties thequestion of how to conceal cablesinevitably arose.External cable installation was notpossible, it wasn’t practical to channelthe walls, and residents didn’t want thedisruption of redecorating. Thetraditional trunking option was also notfavoured by the residents either as theycomplained it would look ‘unfashionable’in their contemporary living areas. D-Line’s range of 30x15mm mini-trunkingwas chosen as the perfect solution tohide the coaxial cables, with its semi-circle profile making the cable pathblend to look like the natural top-sectionof the skirting.D-LINE
