DAC NEWSLETTER WINTER - SPRING 2010
“Helping Members Keep In Touch”
Hello to All!!
From your DAC Board of Directors.
June 14
June is bustin' out all over. - Oscar Hammerstein II, 1945
June is a special month. The days are
long and full of sunshine, fireflies flash
softly in the twilight, and people
celebrate Flag Day and Father's Day.
Did you know that Sally Ride, the first
American woman in outer space, flew on
the space shuttle Challenger on June 18,
1983? Or that Paul McCartney was born
on June 18, 1942?
If you were born in June your birthstones
are Pearl and Moonstone, June‘s birth
flower is the Rose, and if you were born
between May 21 and June 20 your
zodiac sign is Gemini, from June 21 to
July 22 you are under the sign of Cancer.
June 21 is the first day of Summer!
Fire up your BBQ‘s and get ready for
trips to the beach and the mountains with
your family and friends. Come and
bring your friends to any of the
wonderful events planned for 2010.
There’s a lot going on and it’s always a
fun time getting together with our
Directory friends.
Thank you all for your continued support
of this great organization.

The DAC has two openings on the Board.
There are two openings on the Board of Directors! This is your opportunity to get involved in planning social
activities to continue the camaraderie enjoyed by directory employees during their days with the Directory department;
assist in the publishing of a membership directory, newsletter and web site allowing members to keep in touch with
friends made over the years.
The lifeblood of the Directory Alumni Council is its membership and its heart is the volunteer Board of Directors. If
you are the type of person who seeks out and acts on solution, works well both independently and within a team, and
isn't afraid of a little hard work, this may be a great opportunity for you. It is the membership that votes to put people
on the Board, for a three year term, and voting takes place at the Annual Meeting in April.
Some positions on the board have set responsibilities, such as Treasurer, Secretary, Chairman and Vice-Chairman, and
these positions are decided each term by the Board of Directors. For most new Directors, their responsibilities include
running 1 event per year, assisting one of the other Directors with large projects from time to time, and familiarizing
themselves with the working of the Board with an eye to taking on more responsibilities in the next term.
The DAC Board of Directors meets one day a month from January to June and September to November. Meetings
generally run from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Are you able to accept this commitment?
Check out our web site for details regarding Officer and Board Member position responsibilities.
http://www.ypalumni.org/about_us.htm Officers are elected through an official election process at a board
meeting. Board Members nominate candidates for election to the Board of Directors at the Annual Meeting in April.
If you are interested in running for the Directory Alumni Council Board of Directors, please contact our
Chairman, Claire Palmer, at [email protected] or [email protected].
Tell us your area of expertise or areas of interest, such as: Organizational, Sales, Financial, Nonprofit Management or
Nonprofit Board Experience, Computer Expertise, Event Coordination, Other area (please specify).
What can I do to increase membership?
Our Directory Alumni Council was founded on November 23, 1987 by a wonderful group of people like
you, who thought it might be nice to stay in touch with some of their friends after they have left the
company. You don’t have to be of retirement age to join. If you ever worked in Directory, at any
time, we welcome your membership in the Directory Alumni Council.
While the duties of the officers are spelled out clearly, it is incumbent upon everyone to recruit and help
grow the DAC. The DAC helps meet the social and communications needs of retirees. Every member can
help by spreading the word about the DAC, and by personally signing up former Directory employees who
have not yet heard of the Directory Alumni Council, and therefore have not had the opportunity to join.
Many people transferred to other companies as NYNEX/Bell Atlantic/Verizon/Idearc/SuperMedia altered
its business model, and lost contact with their membership opportunities. The company will not help us
toward this end by supplying former employee names or addresses (as a matter of confidentiality), nor will
they advise active employees that we exist. Therefore, membership growth is a real priority as we face the
issues that the future is certain to present.
If you know of others who worked in Directory, at any time, we welcome their membership in the
Directory Alumni Council. Go to our web site http://www.ypalumni.org/join.htm and click on
“Application Form”. Just remember....."We were the best of Directory!"

Hello!! What’s up?
The Directory Alumni
Council
The Telephone Company, like other
major corporations consists of many
divisions. Our division, the
Directory Department, also known
as Yellow Pages and SuperPages,
services the business community by
selling Yellow and White Pages
advertising. There are various
groups within Directory: sales
representatives, artists, clerical
personal, public affairs, legal,
finance, marketing, information
systems, customer relations,
network, and real estate. Through
teamwork these groups expand the
company into new domestic and
global markets.
So it was that on November 23,
1987 a group of 8 Yellow Page
sales people who truly loved their
profession, decided they would
always enjoy being a part of this
exciting business, even after they
retired, by keeping in touch with
their past.
This desire to stay connected lead
to the formation of the Directory
Alumni Council!

Hello Everyone!
“Happy Spring” at last. It couldn‘t
come fast enough!! By now, most
of our snow birds are home.
Welcome Back! Many reported it
was not the warm weather they are
use to having. I am sure that was
very disappointing to you. Some of
our DAC Board members have
really travelled to quite interesting
destinations this year.
Beverly Lentine and her husband
Frank went to Germany at
Christmas to visit their daughter
Robin. Last July they were in the
same area on a river cruise from
Bucharest to Budapest, also visiting
Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, Croatia
and Hungary. It was an experience
the Lentines will not forget.
―Grand Circle‖, out of Boston, is the
travel agency Beverly uses for their
travels. She commented how
wonderful they treat their customers.
Just recently when a volcano in
Iceland erupted and wreaked havoc
on the travel industry, Grand Circle
arranged for their travelers to stay
for three days on a River Boat,
instead of sleeping at the airport.
Now that‘s good customer service!
Sandy Noe one of our Board
Members has just returned from
Japan. Sandy and her long time
friend Laurie went to visit Sandy‘s
son Scott, who is a Navy
Commander. Scott took a week off
to show the girls how to get around.
Sandy said the train service is
great!! Scott has his own home, so
he cooked a few meals for the girls
and asked them to try everything.
Sandy says the food was delicious
and not like the Japanese food in the
States.
Week two the girls took trains
everywhere. Visited temples, shrines
and of course did lots of shopping.
Tokyo is a lot like New York City.
The cars are very small and the
towns have very narrow streets.
However, they do have two and
three lane highways outside the city
limits. They stayed at some
beautiful hotels, with very up-dated
bathrooms. Very interesting!!
Fashions in Tokyo – the young gals
are vey colorful! Many wear bright
colored stockings with designs in
them. All the girls wear very high
heels, and of course they can‘t walk
right in them! People are friendly.
If they can‘t understand what you
are saying, someone else jumps in to
help you.
Sandy arrived home after her two
week trip to Japan, very tired. She
flew United Airlines; it was a 24
hour trip, but well worth it, says
Sandy. Seeing Scott was of course
her highlight, and being with Laurie
her best friend since she was 6 years
old was very special! As Sandy
says, we looked at one another and
explained, ―Are we really here!!!‖
So glad you had a wonderful time.
We welcome you home Sandy!
When I was looking for help for the
Phone-a-Thon I called Ann Shear
Jaroncyk. Ann has been helping
me since our Phone-a-Thon started
and does a great job!! Thank you,
Ann.
Ann lives up in Newburyport, where
I grew up. It‘s fun to hear about
what‘s happening there. Ann tells
me there is a new taxicab company
NEWSLETTER
5 . . . . .
called the ―London Livery‖. It‘s a
real English cab, driver‘s seat is on
the right of course and it‘s handicap
accessible. The rates are very
reasonable, in fact cheaper than a
regular cab. The owner was a
lawyer and decided to follow his
dream, and so he did!! You might
see this unique cab when you are in
the Newburyport area.
Ann was always a gal who could
multi-task like no other. She works
part-time for a book publisher who
deals with computer text books. She
has been working out with a
personal fitness trainer, and is
currently working as a co-producer
with the Georgetown Theatre
Workshop, in Georgetown, MA.
The name of the show is called
―Seniors of the Sahara‖. Seniors of
the Sahara is a magical romantic
comedy for seniors and ―juniors‖ of
all ages. Sounds great Ann!
Ann has a son Eric, who is now a
New York City undercover Police
Officer. That should be interesting
work!! While enjoying an update
on Ann‘s activities we spoke of our
Veterans. We started to talk about
how important our Veterans are. As
Ann pointed out there is at lot of
help available in every community
for Veterans. People are always
willing to help. Each town has a
Veteran Coordinator who can
provide our Veterans with
information they might be seeking.
―JUST ASK‖. Help is there in all of
our communities. Just recently, one
of our Veterans was in great need of
a wheel chair and financially could
not afford one. The Veteran
Coordinator presented this man with
an almost new 3 wheel scooter.
Now, this Veteran gets out daily,
goes to the coffee shop, does his
own banking and he now has a life
to live!! JUST ASK!!
This information is also available at
your local Senior Centers, as well.
You don‘t have to be a Veteran to
receive help. If you are coming
home from a re-hab or a hospital
and you need the right tools to
recover, i.e. wheel chair, commode,
crutches or whatever, call your
Senior Center, most have used
wheelchairs, canes and bed rails, etc.
They are very willing to loan these
items to you. These items are
expensive and often are used for a
short time. Again, JUST ASK!!
Help is available for everyone.
If you find you are getting bored
with retirement, just look around
you. There is a great need for
volunteers. You are all gifted with
special talents, and have great life
experiences. Consider sharing your
talents in your communities. There
is always a need for volunteers at
your local Food Pantry, Elder
Services, Senior Centers. They are
always looking for volunteers to
make calls, drive elderly to Dr.
Appointments. There is so much to
do…call Hospice. They always
need volunteers. Whatever you can
do in your community will be
greatly appreciated. Believe me you
are the one who will enjoy the
feeling of giving. It‘s a wonderful
feeling you all can enjoy!
Guess who recently celebrated their
29th
wedding anniversary. “The
Wileys”, Mary Lou and Harry. They celebrated at the Mt.
Washington Hotel in Bretton
Woods, NH. What a beautiful
place!! These two lovebirds just
never, ever change. I worked with
them both. They are, as I call them
―The Dream Team‖. Just great
people!
Congratulations from all your
friends in the DAC
Sue Burke, a Board Member and
her dear friend Tricia Savage
recently attended a Health Seminar
at Lahey Clinic in Burlington, MA.
When I called her to find out what
she was doing, Sue was visiting the
many booths offering health
information for women. She just
came off of a relaxing machine,
while Tricia was getting information
on skin care. There were several
booths giving out information on
women‘s health, heart, high blood
pressure, etc.
Check your local hospitals. Most
offer programs like this. Sue and
Tricia are now on the mailing list,
after going only once. They will
receive an invitation each year. It‘s
a great way to spend the day with a
girl friend, and to become
knowledgeable about what is
available for women‘s health.
Sounds like a fun day.
I called Lucille Schifino, who is a
very busy realtor in Lynnfield, to
ask her to help with our Phone-a-
Thon on May 18th. She of course
said ―Yes‖. Always ask a busy
person for help and they always say
―Yes‖!! That‘s a fact! Lucille also
came to our last Board Meeting
where she helped mail out the
February Newsletter. This is a huge
project, folks, it takes many hands to
get your Newsletters out to all of
you. We are so grateful to our
volunteers who call us and offer a
helping hand. We also have fun
seeing one another, having a chance
to catch up and have plenty of
laughs. We thank each of you so
very much!!
Back to Lucille…her daughter
Maria recently got married. Lots of
fun for Lucille! Maria and hubby
recently purchased a home in
Peabody. This is a very nice area. I
wonder …Did Mom, the Realtor
help??
Congratulations to everyone!!

Marie Nardone, a Board Member,
always is a giving person. Marie is
a very busy gal and never says ―No‖
to anything we ask her to do. I had
an opportunity to speak with
Marie‘s Mother Emily, who just
turned 97 years this past April 13th.
She just loves her trips to Foxwoods
along with her many friends and
Marie‘s the gal who gets them there
and provides the bus transportation.
Her Mom Emily says her real name
is Emma Linda, two family names.
That‘s how it was done 97 years
ago. She finally changed her name
to Emily, because her name w as too
long. As Emily says, ―I feel I am
slowing down these days‖. Believe
me everyone, she is terrific!! You
would never know she is 97 years
young. How special is that!!
Congratulations Emily on your 97th
Birthday from all our DAC members
and many healthy, happy days are
wished for you!!
Speaking of special 90 year olds...
Kathleen Palmer turned 96 years
on April 18th. Kathleen sounds like
a very pleasant 60 year old, or even
younger on the telephone. She is
the mother of our very busy
Chairlady Claire Palmer.
Kathleen, worked years ago at
―Grover Cronin‖ a very popular
department store in Waltham. Many
of our retirees may know of this
popular department store. Kathleen
worked there for many years where
she was recognized as a Top Sales
gal! Our Chair, Claire, is a very
busy gal. She not only heads up our
DAC organization, where she does
an outstanding job in editing this
Newsletter; pulling together the
Membership Directory, welcoming
our new members to the DAC and
jumping in whenever needed.
Claire also heads up the Activity
Commission for her Church, Corpus
Christi-St. Bernard Parish in
Newton, MA. She‘s very active
with fund raising for her parish and
does a great job!!
The ―Directory Alumni Council‖
wishes Kathleen many Happy
Belated Birthday Wishes, along with
Good Health, and many Happy
Times.
I had a nice chat with Dolly
(Shapiro) Tarr who travels back
and forth to her second home in
Aventura, FL. Dolly says it‘s
located near Miami-Dade, and has
the 6th largest shopping center in the
country! Per Dolly ―She shops them
all.‖
Her daughter-in-law Andrea, who
worked as a Premise Saleswoman, is
married to Michael Shapiro,
Dolly‘s son who worked in Tel
Sales. Andrea just started working
at Nordstrom‘s Department store.
Andrea and Mike have 3 boys - 11
year old twins and a 14 year old.
Dolly says the boys are very active!!
The older son is a talented musician.
He plays the piano and trombone
and is quite musically talented.
Dolly is now taking piano lessons
and loves it!! She finds it very
relaxing. As the saying goes, ―If
you don‘t use it, you lose it‖. How
true!!
Bob Odachowski and his wife
Alice celebrated the arrival of their
second grandchild.
Congratulations to all!!
Just an update on Joan
Champoux… Joan served on the
DAC Board for several years and
still continues to be very supportive
of our group. She took a fall and is
recovering from hip surgery. Joan is
recovering at
Shaughnessy-Kaplan Rehab
1 Dove Ave
Salem, MA 01970
I know she would enjoy hearing
from her many friends.
On a sad note, we recently lost one
of our longtime members from
Lewiston, ME, Clem Cormier.
Clem was a YP Premise Salesman
from Maine area for many years and
a true gentleman.
The DAC sends our condolences to
his family and friends.

Events. We promise you a great
time. §
Jim’s Jems
By Jim Mullaney
Time, as we‘ve learned when we get
older, is inexorable. It just keeps
going and goings. That‘s the good
part for those of us who are still
enjoying it. Two retired friends who
came into the YP about the same
time I did were Ben Riley and Betty
McManus. I spoke with Betty
recently and she is recovering from
an illness and is feeling much better
as I write this about her. Betty, as
many of you know, was Betty Pia
before she married her late husband
Dick McManus. It‘s funny how
memories come back when you least
expect it. My girl friend at the time,
Vi and I were invited to a house
party at Dick‘s one afternoon and
naturally we accepted because we
were close friends. Vi prevailed on
me to stop at Macy‘s so she could
pick up a pair of shoes she wanted.
NEWSLETTER
7 . . . . .
I was reluctant but, of course we
stopped ―for a minute‖ and Vi got
her shoes. What we didn‘t know at
the time was that was the day Dick
and Betty had decided to get
married. So we missed the backyard
wedding but enjoyed the reception
that followed. Naturally I was not
too happy to have missed the happy
occasion but, as usual, we survived
and eventually Vi and I became Mr.
& Mrs. We stayed that way for
thirty-two years until she quietly
died one night next to me in bed.
Benjy Riley and I were good beer
drinking buddies for many years
until our retirements. He and his
wife, Audrey, moved to Florida so
although our beer drinking days
together came to a close we
remained friends. In fact, I spoke on
the phone to both of them even as I
write about them for this newsletter.
Ben has turned ninety-three and by
the time you‘re reading this Audrey
will be ninety. Like all of us they
both have their good and not-so-
good days but at least they are still
here. They have been married 67
years and had six children.
For those of you who remember
Betty and Ben, I‘m sure a greeting
card with a short note would trigger
some happy memories for both of
you. I know, it‘s easy for me to say
and, sadly, just as easy to forget if
we don‘t act on it when we‘re
thinking about it.
While we‘re on the name Betty, the
irony is Betty McManus was within
a couple of days of flying down to
Hudson, FL for her annual visit to
Betty Mandl, before she became ill.
Obviously, things probably
happened for the best the way they
did, otherwise Betty M. would have
felt responsible to take care of Betty
Mc. and I‘m sure no one wants that
kind of responsibility. Shucks, it‘s
bad enough to take care of one‘s
own kids and/or spouses and
relatives than friends. One thing I
remember about being a caretaker is
when my wife Pat, at the time, was
having children she was usually held
at the hospital for four or five days.
Now it‘s, have the baby and go
home. Thank goodness for such
wonderful people as grandparents
who help out at home.
Betty Mandl came down from
Canada to work in YP for two or
more decades. She‘s been retired
now for at least as many years as
she worked and she‘s still going
strong. Keep it up Betty; we love
you.
Bob Mansfield and I go back many
years. There wasn‘t even a union
and the sales group was having
meetings to form a guild. Bob and
his wife, Irene, are back in Millbury
from their annual trip to Arizona.
Before they went West, Bob had his
second knee replacement and is in
good shape for the shape he‘s in.
We agreed to meet for lunch when I
get back to Milford in July. We
ended the conversation by my
telling Irene a joke.
Okay you old timers, here‘s a
familiar name out of the past. Jean
McDonald who worked on
Sanderson Ave, and Market Street
in Lynn. Jean maintains two homes,
one in Englewood FL from October
through May and her main residence
in Andover from June through
September. She also hits northern
Maine, her sister‘s place,
periodically. Like so many of you,
she‘s now a great grandmother and
every once in a while has to resort to
the use of a cane. She is also a
widow who, she says, isn‘t looking
around. Really no reason to. She
took care of her very sick husband
until he passed away and now has
her family to relate to. Keep going
Jean.
I had a dynamite conversation with
Lillian Napoli who not only is alive
and well, but as full of spirit as ever.
She has a close family relationship,
living with her mother and sisters.
The nice part is they all get along
very well. Lillian still knows and
keeps in touch with a lot of her
friends and retirees from the
Company. One thing that happened
to her and many of our retirees is a
major MWRA water pipe burst in
Weston that affected millions of
residents in the Boston metro-area.
At the time I spoke with Lillian they
had to boil, boil, and boil their water
before using. It could be worse, I
suppose, if the pipe burst in the
winter. Lil has been retired over
twenty years which, in itself, is a
good reason to keep going. And,
she is.
The next time you have occasion to
fly domestically if you use Delta
you might be lucky enough to run
into Toni Nolfi who is a flight
attendant for the past fourteen years.
She also is a grandmother. One of
the things I keep saying is our kids
seem to get older but we seem to
stay the same age. Toni reported to
Bob Harradon who, in turn, was
one of the good guys. I‘ve often
said, and still say, I liked everyone
in the Company I worked with and
for. Of course, I liked some more
than others but that‘s only natural.
Everyone is like that.
I spoke briefly with Wendell
Harvey who moved to Pensacola,
FL some thirty years ago and is still
there. Actually we don‘t have much
in common because he was a
business office manager before he
was assigned to Directory for the
last couple of years of his career.
We were just passing names but he
did remember me so I let it go at
that.
June 2010
. . . . 8
On the other hand, I talked to long-
time friend Henry Hopkins who
now lives in North Carolina. I know
he and his wife Evelyn have also
lived in Rhode Island,
Massachusetts and, if memory
serves me correctly, Maine. That‗s
a lot of jumping around. This
coming June they will be married 65
years. One might say they made the
right decision back in 1945 after
WWII. At least no one has shot
them down so far. Just think, some
people don‘t even live that long.
It‘s probably called ―the luck of the
Irish‖. Whatever it is, it worked for
them. Henry says he‘s feeling okay
but Evelyn has vision problems.
Other than that, everything else is
fine.
Jack Lavelle and Jeanne reached a
half century of marriage. That
sounds like so much more than fifty
years. One thing is certain; in order
to stay together that long someone
has to make the decision over the
long haul that it isn‘t always
necessary to get in the last word.
Jack and Jeanne recently had
tragedy enter their lives. Jack‘s
brother died and the couple lost a
son within months of each other.
Unfortunately those things happen
as we get older.
One of the pluses about writing for
our retirees newsletter is talking to
different people we‘ve know over
the years. I said that before and It‘s
still true. For instance, Kay
McKittrick and I go back to the
days when she and I used to work in
Providence. This May she will be
moving to an assisted living
apartment. The nice part is she‘ll
bring her charm and personality
with her and will mix in with the
people already there, very easily.
And, the facility is located in
Woburn where she lives now. Kay
mentioned two people we‘re all
familiar with Peg Hussey and Janet
Canada. Janet, she said, is now a
grandmother. How does that grab
you? Kay, enjoy your new home
and good luck! Janet is the
grandmother to twin boys who are
six years old. She joined The
Company in 1959 and worked with
us for thirty-five years. Originally
she reported to the late Marilyn
Ferullo. There‘s a name out of the
past!
Both of the Kennedy’s, Art and
Marilyn, are doing fine in Quincy.
A few years ago, they sold their
Florida location and haven‘t
returned. Art says he‘ll be back next
year but I reminded him he says that
every season. I suspect the couple
of cats Marilyn is attached to is a
controlling factor. To each his own.
Okay, I‘ve come to the end. One
word is as good as ten. Amen.
My best to all of you.

10 years in today's society.
Prior to the 1900s they would
occur from 20 to 100 years as
society did not evolve much
during those time periods. The
contributing factors for a
generational shift include the
following:
1. Global influence by world
leaders/events
2. Popular music/movies/books
3. Shared Hardships
4. Defining characteristics in
clothing, hair styles and
other styles
5. Shared vision
Generations cannot be defined
by decades per say, however
they can be defined in 10 year
blocks as illustrated below:
Children born in the 1900's
through early 1910s and grew
up in the 10's and 20's are
commonly referred to as the
Flapper Generation coined for
the popular dance of the time.
Not all people danced or agreed
with the dress and actions of a
few, yet that few clearly and

uniquely identified that time
period.
Children born in the late 10's
and early 20's and grew up in
the 20's and 30's were often
referred to as the Displaced
Laborers. With the increase in
immigration, cheaper labor and
a declining economy, many
young adults flocked to cities to
find work and many found
themselves homeless after the
depression living in tent cities
called Hoovervilles.
Children born in the late 20's
and early 30' and grew up in
the 30's and 40's are known as
Depression Era Generation.
This generation became
extremely frugal and cautious
after watching parents and
older family members
struggling to survive.
Children born in the late 30's
and early 40's and grew up in
the 40's and 50's are a lost
generation. Some have referred
to this group as War Birds and
War Brides, others have
referred to the generation as
the Age of War as WWII
influenced the lives and
attitudes of the generation.
Children born in the late 40's
through 50's and grew up in
the 50's and 60's are known as
the Baby Boomers. This
generation came about
supposedly due to the return of
soldiers from war. The
population boom in the United
States spiked higher than any
other point in US history.
Children born in the late 50's
and early 60's and grew up in
the 60's and 70's are often
referred to as the Peace
Generation or the Hippie
Generation. This generation is
known for their flagrancy and
disregard for authority in
protest against social norms
and government decisions.
Children born in the late 60's
and early 70's and grew up in
the 70's and 80's are another
lost generation. However,
during the 80's the term Me
Generation was created to
define the narcissistic nature of
the clothing and style obsessed
teens and young adults of the
time period.
Children born in the late 70's
and early 80's and grew up in
the 80's and 90's are referred
to as the X-Generation. This
group became so radically
different in their views by
blending from all previous
generations and adding it's own
flavor of angst and anger while
benefiting from a strengthening
economy.
Children born in the late 80's
and early 90's and grew up in
the 90's and 00's have recently
been described by Scott
Sequoia as the E-Generation for
the growing dependency on
technology including cell
phones and the internet.
This information was sourced from the book, 'From the Me Generation to the
E-Generation, a guide for understanding today's tech savvy youth' by Scott Sequoia.

The Goals of the DAC are four-
fold…
Getting New Members – last year
we had 25 new members, so far this
year we have 7 new members. We
ask that you reach out to your
friends and if they are not already a
member, invite them to join. Word
of mouth goes a long way.
Continue Developing the DAC
Newsletter, and Publish a
Membership Directory –
Members tell us that they like to
read about what is happening with
their Directory friends. We are
always looking for ―Newsy Notes‖
to add to each issue. Also, there are
openings on the Newsletter for
more contributing authors. If you
are interested, contact Claire
Palmer at [email protected]. Our
next newsletter publication is in
October.
The Website – Our website
continues to draw a great number of
viewers, with the most interest in the
―Just In‖ page.
Social Organization – The DAC
not only does fun things, but also
gives support to a charity. Over the
past 18 years we have donated over
$198,115 to the Foundation for
Neurologic Diseases. Thank you
all for your continued support to this
worthwhile cause.
The Legal Effort To Return
Directory Retirees To Verizon Is
Going Forward – The Bell Tel
Retirees Association is looking for
all Directory retirees to join their
organization. Please do what you
can to support this effort.
Claire Palmer submitted the
following names for re-election to
the Board of Directors: George
Anderson, Beverly Lentine, Bob
Odachowski, Pauline Vass. No
additional names were submitted
from the floor, and the vote was
unanimous in favor to elect the slate
of candidates.
Everyone present expressed
―Thanks‖ to the Board for the
wonderful job that they do ―Helping
Keep Members in Touch‖.
In conclusion, Claire ―thanked all of
the members of the Board who work
so hard every day to support our
members and make real our
vision. The Board has responded to
challenges with energy and
enthusiasm and I couldn‘t be more
proud of them.‖
Claire reminded the attendees that
we have 2 openings on the Board. If
you know of anyone who would like
to join the DAC Board of Directors,
please give the name(s) to any
member of the board.
After the official meeting
concluded, everyone stayed and
enjoyed pizza and refreshments. §

May 31 was Memorial Day. Please take a moment to remember and appreciate the sacrifices made by the men and women who have served their country. In their honor, here is a poem by John T. Bird of Birmingham, Ala.
Last Monday in May
We pause to remember those who died
with so much courage so much pride.
They’ll never come back but memories endure
to remind us of freedom: fragile, pure.
We’re worthy of their sacrifice
if we pause each day not just on the last Monday in May.

So, why do you golf? No matter the
challenge we create for ourselves,

our craving for success. The

Red Sox vs LA Angels

August 18, 2010
VS
By Claire Palmer
Fenway Park:
Home of the Red Sox
Fenway Park is an example of some
of the best things that change little
and remain basically the same for
decades. The Boston Red Sox have
remained committed to staying at
this classic ballpark that they have
called home since 1912. It is the
oldest major league ballpark in use
and still retains the same feel and
characteristics as it did when it
opened.
We purchased 110 tickets @
$52.25 per ticket for this game.
As of this newsletter’s publication
we’ve sold 85 tickets.
If you are interested in purchasing
tickets contact: Claire Palmer at

The Alumni and their friends are
looking forward to seeing the Red
Sox vs LA Angels at Fenway Park
on August 18th!
Both teams have players throughout
the entire lineup who can contribute
offensively. But if it comes down to
hitting, then the Red Sox‘s vast
firepower should win it.
Looking forward to seeing you at

Suffolk Downs Horse
Racing
October 13, 2010
By Sandy Noe
Suffolk Downs has undergone many
transformations over the years, but it
has continuously been a place where
people from all walks of life are
welcome. Everyone who has walked
through the turnstiles at the track
has a story to tell.
Established in 1935, Suffolk Downs
is one of the most historic horse
racing facilities in America. The
track is located only a few miles
north of Boston, just outside the
Callahan Tunnel, next to Logan
Airport. Live racing starts at 12:45
p.m.
Boston racing fans will always turn
out to see good horses.
If you are genuinely interested in
horses, you can have any number of
fascinating conversations with the
people around you. Everybody has
their opinions and theories, and
occasionally one of them is right.
Watch the horses begin their warm-
ups, then go place your bet based on
what you just saw before they go out
onto the track. And if you choose to
be outside, you can be right up close
to the backstretch and finish line,
feel the ground shake as thousands
of pounds of horse thunder toward
the finish line, your horse out in
front--you really can't beat the thrill!
In past years, even though there
were no big winners in our group,
everyone has such a good time. Join
us in October, you may go home a
winner!!

Downs flyer on Page 37 in this
newsletter. Fill out the form

Second, I would also like to share some happy news. It seems like only yesterday that our son Frank was a cute little
kid, not to mention our little miracle. We could not have asked for better. When the June newsletter comes out he will
have graduated from Malden Catholic High school. He will attend Merrimack College/Francis E. Girard School of

Lisa Romano, Cheryl Treacy and Dan Carey sent us a note following the death of their Mother and our friend
Mary Fox.
Dear YP Directory Alumni Council,
As most of you know we lost our beautiful Mother, Mary Fox, (Foxy Lady) this past April due to the hideous disease,
Alzheimer‘s. On behalf of our entire family we would like to extend a heartfelt Thank You to all of you for the
outpouring of love and support during this very sad time.
For all your condolences, cards, phone calls, and especially to those who are able to attend her services, Thank You.
Your words of comfort, your thoughtfulness and generosity were truly appreciated. We‘d like to take this opportunity
to also Thank Gail Roberts and the DAC ladies who worked so hard on the beautiful purple blanket you knitted for
Mom – she loved it very much and displayed it on her bed, and more often on her lap, for all to see. Thank you for
always thinking of her.
We will be forever grateful to all of you who were able to share in her life‘s journey. Not only will she be
remembered as a devoted mother, grandmother and friend, she will also be remembered for her sparkling personality,
quick wit and occasionally dirty joke that only she could deliver and make sweet. Most of you who worked with Mom
can certainly attest to that! Right up until the end she never waivered, always saying ―I Love You‖ when she saw us,
immediately followed with a warm embrace. She has always been and will continue to be an inspiration to our family.
She was our sunshine and we know that whenever we think of her she will always give us a reason to smile.
Although Mom is gone, and we will miss her very much, we also know that this is not the end of our fight against
Alzheimer‘s Thank You, DAC and those of you who make generous donations, for your continued support in raising
funds for the Neurological Foundations, such as Alzheimer‘s. We will never forget those who have passed but we
need to remember those who are still here fighting the fight – we can make a difference together!
Again, to all Mom‘s extended family from the ―Phone Company‖, Thank You for your kindness, your friendship and
most importantly for the wonderful memories that she was able to take with her.
She will forever remain our Foxy Lady!
With Sincere Gratitude,
Lisa Romano, Cheryl Treacy and Dan Carey and all of Mary’s family

FYI
The DAC Board of Directors encourages you to consider the following important
request from the Association of BellTel Retirees Inc. If you choose to respond, you need
to sign up by submitting your information via email to: [email protected]
or, by mail to the address below.
IDEARC Information: On November 17, 2006, Verizon spun off its domestic print and Internet yellow pages directories publishing
operations as well as the Verizon Information Services (VIS) to Idearc. As part of the spin-off transaction, Verizon
retirees were moved from the well-funded pension plan of Verizon into an up-start company's pension plan,
which may not be in their best interest. Below is a timeline of actions the Association has taken on behalf of these
transferred retirees:
The Association filed an Administrative Claim and Request for Plan Documents on behalf of Idearc retirees on
February 4, 2009.
On May 27, 2009, the Association provided a supplement to the administrative class-wide claim.
On July 31, 2009, Verizon fully denied the Administrative Class-wide Claim.
On September 15, 2009, the Association filed an appeal to the July 31, 2009, denial of the Administrative Class-wide
Claim.
On January 6, 2010, an Amended Complaint for Proposed Class-Action Relief Under ERISA was filed against
Verizon Communications and Idearc Media in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas,
Dallas Division. Read about the claim at www.belltelretirees.org under Legal Actions.
Idearc/Super Media - "Involuntarily Transferred Retirees"
Answers to Frequently Asked Questions from Members
Q. I received an 8 page letter from Verizon denying my claim. What should I do?
A. While you are encouraged to go ahead and respond to the denial letter, don't expect to receive anything but
another denial letter. All of the issues are adequately argued and addressed in the pending Amended Complaint which
you should take time to read. If you respond to the denial letter you should state that you adopt the arguments raised
in the Murphy proposed class action and you should demand to be returned to Verizon's pension plans.
Q. Does the fact that I received the form denial letter mean that we lost our case?
A. No, the denial letter is the same letter sent to all complaining retirees. The actual lawsuit filed in the Dallas Federal
Court is moving along as expected. No legal issue has been ruled upon by the Dallas Federal Judge, and it will be
months, perhaps a year, before there are rulings. Both Verizon and Idearc/SuperMedia hired several large law firms
and every step of this case may encounter some delays. The legal issues are unique and complicated.
Q. Do I need to get my own attorney?
A. Certainly, you have that option. But, it may prove to be an unnecessary expenditure. The Murphy case is being
pursued with the goal of addressing the problems for all former Verizon retirees who were involuntarily transferred into
Idearc/SuperMedia pension plans.
Q. Does the fact that Idearc changed its name to SuperMedia affect our case?
NEWSLETTER
. . . . 25
A. No, that fact has absolutely no effect on the lawsuit.
Q. What is the status of the case?
A. In mid-March 2010, defense counsel for both Verizon and Idearc/SuperMedia will respond to the pending Amended
Complaint and argue to have certain claims dismissed. Our attorneys will file a response in opposition. The court
filings will await a decision by the federal judge. Meanwhile, the next big fight will be over whether or not the case
should be class certified. All of this will take some time. All significant court filings will be posted at the retiree website.
Q. Where can I find updates on the case?
A. The Association of BellTel Retirees posts updates: www.belltelretirees.org Please read the Amending Complaint
filed on January 6, 2010, which thoroughly explains the proposed class action case and is posted at the website. Also,
when required, important email bulletins will be sent and USPS letters will be mailed to those not on the Internet. Email
is the best way to stay informed. Meanwhile, if you receive any letters from Verizon or Idearc regarding the suit, please
call the Association office: 1-800-261-9222 or email us on: [email protected] and register your name and
Thank you for your help. It is imperative that we do all we can to protect these retirees’ pensions and benefits. Association of BellTel Retirees Inc. c/o C. William Jones, President and Executive Director P.O. Box 33 Cold Spring Harbor, NY 11724 [email protected] Re: Joinder in February 4, 2009 Class-wide Administrative Claim Plan Administrators: I read the February 4, 2009 dated administrative claim letter sent to you on behalf of Claimants Phillip A. Murphy, Jr., Susan A. Burke, Sandra R. Noe, Joanne Jacobsen, David L. Wibbelsman and Claire M. Palmer, all active retired plan participants in Idearc’s now SuperMedia’s pension plans and former retired plan participants in Verizon’s pension plans. In that claim letter it was requested that you treat the matter as a class-wide administrative claim. I hereby join in that administrative claim and adopt the contentions and request for relief stated therein. After the November 17, 2006 Verizon-Idearc spin-off, I was one of the approximately 3,000 active retirees involuntarily transferred from a Verizon sponsored pension plan into an Idearc sponsored pension plan. This was done without my consent and all to my detriment. A prudent plan fiduciary charged with a duty of loyalty and having responsibility to act in my best interest would not have transferred me, involuntarily, from a Verizon pension plan into an Idearc pension plan. I hereby demand that my status as a transferred retiree into the Idearc pension plan be rescinded and that Verizon and Idearc agree that all Claimants, myself, and all other transferred retirees, be restored to former status as participants in Verizon’s pension plans. It has never been and will never be in my best interest to be in the retirement rolls of Idearc. The Garden Club
Has the weather kept you from getting some of your spring gardening projects completed? Early June is
not too late to get your summer gardening underway. Adding color, pruning, controlling slugs, dividing perennials, planting vegetables and eliminating weeds head the list of things to do in June.
COLOR SPOTS - are an ideal way to create instant color in the garden. These plants are generally grown in individual
pots, in sizes of 4 inches or more and the plants are nicely branched and already in bloom. If you are like me, and haven't had a chance to get summer annuals planted due to the lousy weather on weekends, the 'Color Spots' are a way of catching-up by getting some early summer color into the garden. Water the pots before removing the plants from the containers. Space the plants as recommended on the plant labels.
PRUNING - June is the month often set aside for shaping evergreens. In fact, this is the month the commercial tree
growers shape their Christmas trees. So it is a good month for shearing, pinching or pruning Junipers, Cypress or Conifers. Also, this is the time to pinch back annuals that might be getting too leggy or misshapen.
SLUGS - the cool, wet spring has drawn the slugs out in full force, so it is important to take time to eliminate them.
PERENNIALS - this is an ideal time to select and plant the spring, summer and fall flowering varieties of perennials. It's
also the time to divide the spring flowering perennials. In addition, June, July, August and September are the months for starting any of the perennials from seed. Sow the seeds directly into the garden.
VEGETABLE GARDENING - It is now late enough in the season to start any of the warm weather vegetables,
including Corn, Beans, Peppers, Egg Plant, Tomatoes, Squash, Pumpkins, etc. If you haven't had a chance to sow some of these crops yet, it is not too late to get them started now. Be sure to get these crops started as soon as possible.
WEEDING - the cool, wet weather this spring has also encouraged the germination of weed seeds, so they are a real
problem in many gardens. It is critical that these weeds be pulled, cultivated or eliminated in some form before they have a chance to flower and go to seed again. Otherwise, you will be fighting newly germinated weed seed for the next several years.
FERTILIZING - some of the plants that have suffered freeze damage this past winter will probably benefit from a light
feeding at this time. In fact, one of the best times to fertilize plants like Rhododendrons, Camellias and Azaleas is immediately after they have finished flowering. Use a 'Rhododendron' or 'Evergreen' type fertilizer to feed evergreens and a 'Rose' or 'Vegetable Garden' type food to feed Roses, perennials, vegetables and deciduous trees and shrubs.
LAWN CARE - late spring and early summer is the time to fertilize the lawn again. This is also an excellent time to
eliminate lawn weeds. It's not too late to reseed or over-seed the lawn with new lawn seed. If temperatures range much above 65 degrees, it will be too late to apply moss killers. Thatching should also wait until fall. However, there is still plenty of time to perforate (aerate) the lawn, if it is needed.
ROSES - they have suffered enough damage from the severe winter. So be on the lookout for mildew, aphid, black-
spot or other insect or disease problems and if they appear take steps to control them right away. Roses will need to be fertilized monthly this summer.

―Helping Members Keep In Touch‖
Dear Alumni,
On behalf of the Directory Alumni Council, I would like to extend a warm welcome and congratulate you as you conclude your career with Directory.
Our Directory Alumni Council was founded on November 23, 1987 by a wonderful group of people like you, who thought it might be nice to stay in touch with some of their friends after they have left the company.
Annual dues is $15.00. Membership brings you our informative newsletter, a copy of the Membership Directory, flyers of upcoming events, and timely e-mail notification of information of interest to the Alumni.
The Directory Alumni Council is a great way to stay in touch. Our organization is made up of former Directory employees and has all the attributes of a close-knit family. We do care for each other and try to be there for one another whenever there is a need. We do hope you will join us for the nominal $15 dues.
Again, on behalf of the Directory Alumni Council, Congratulations and Best Wishes for the years ahead.
Sincerely,
Claire M. Palmer Chairman Send your annual dues of $15.00 to:
