The first Daffodil Day was held in Wellington and Manawatu in 1990.

From humble beginnings, a group of Feilding volunteers picked daffodils from local paddocks to exchange for a donation on the last Friday on August.

When we look back over the years, Daffodil Day has grown to become an iconic event in the New Zealand calendar. Daffodil Day fundraising activities are varied and range from street collections to presales of daffodils to donor appeals and community events.

In Feilding we have a wonderful group of volunteers that organise the street day stalls, merchandise sales, morning teas through to taking advantage of the sale day at the local sale yard.

The activity is not limited to the day, fresh daffodils are picked from local paddocks, bunched and exchanged for a donation on Daffodil Day.

Why the daffodil – like other international cancer organisations we use the daffodil as our symbol. It is one of the first flowers of spring, whose bright yellow blooms remind us of the joys the new season will bring. It represents the hope there is for the one in three New Zealanders affected by cancer.

In New Zealand the daffodil was chosen because, as one of the earliest flowers of spring, it symbolises hope and a promise of happier times after the cold weather. n

Transport Service is only possible because of VolunteersOur volunteer driving service was presented an outstanding achievement award by Jonathan Coleman at the Minister of Health Volunteer Awards yesterday.

For fifty years, our volunteer drivers around the country have made sure cancer patients with limited or no transport available are able to reach lifesaving cancer treatment. Over 1,000 volunteers provide the service free of charge giving up their own time and cars for the benefit of cancer patients. Last year 18,700 trips were made, providing transport to around 2,400 patients. The volunteers deal with long travel times, sometimes away from home for up to 10 hours, peak traffic and all weather while driving. Being a driver can be stressful and requires a great deal of attention to both the patient’s needs and the road to ensure the patient reaches their treatment safely and on time.

It’s because of the volunteer drivers that many patients are able to receive their treatment. Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers for keeping the service going for so long.

Would you like to become a part of our team? We need

drivers in the Feilding, Otaki and Palmerston North areas. Even if you don’t live in these areas, contact your local Cancer Society Centre and we will be more than happy to chat. n

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTEDSeptember 1st is our national Random Acts of Kindness Day. 12 years on, NZ is the only country in the world to have a day dedicated to kindness. We’ve had the privilege of delivering surprise morning teas to some of our very supportive businesses and delivering sweet treats to some of our volunteers who dedicate many hours on a regular basis to ease our load. Plans for this year are under wraps… watch this space!

SHARING IS CARINGWe are so grateful to the Rapid Relief Team for supplying bottled water and all the women who provide delicious home baking for our cancer patients travelling to Palmerston North

on Mondays for treatment. Many of them are touched to know that strangers care about them.

WELCOMEMelissa Greig Callaghan is our new Events and Volunteer Coordinator. Melissa comes from a background in tourism, marketing and hospitality. After 6½ years working in Samoa for DigiCell and ANZ Bank as well as a variety of resorts, including the Sheraton, she was drawn back to the Naki. Melissa served on the Samoan Cancer Society’s executive committee and is passionate about helping people.

IMPACT PROJECT – CAMPION COLLEGEJack, Jasmine and Katie from Campion College have been busy creating mini metal sculptures. They have then raffled these works and donated the fundraising to the Cancer Society Gisborne. Such creativity, and such generosity from school kids. Thank you.

GISBORNE AND EAST COAST CANCER SOCIETY Every year the Bushmere Arms Giant Pumpkin Festival in Gisborne poses a challenge to all green fingered growers to produce a giant pumpkin to enter in the annual competition.

In October, the seeds of the previous year’s heaviest pumpkin gets released for purchase. The purchase of official seeds packs ensures a level playing field for all those entering

the next year’s competition. At that time, all hopeful entrants start to grow what they hope to be, the next heaviest pumpkin!

The Bushmere Arms Giant Pumpkin Festival is a day filled with gorgeous activities and events including scarecrow making, pony rides, snail races, nail drives, pumpkin recipes, pumpkin carving, and many other “pumpkin related” family orientated activities. Cancer Society volunteers join a dedicated group of supporters and sponsors to coordinate the activities.

This year the heaviest pumpkin weighed in at 233kg and an exhibition pumpkin grown from non-competition seed, weighed an amazing 574kg.

The Gisborne and East Coast Cancer Society is very grateful to be the recipients of the proceeds of this amazing family day and would like to thank Robin Pierson and his team for this generous $12,500 donation.

Dine For a CauseIn support of ‘Just Us Girls’ our Hawke’s Bay team put together a month long event called “Dine for a Cause”.

Local restaurants came on board in support of the Cancer Society. It was a win, win for all. The restaurants benefited from our promotion of their business and the Cancer Society benefits from a donation for each sitting sold.

The concept was simple: • Restaurants provided a set menu, included in the price is a $10

donation to the Cancer Society.• Diners book and specify that they were “Dining for a Cause”. n

New Shuttle Bus for Hawke’s BayHawke’s Bay is the proud recipient of a new Toyota HiAce bus used to transport our patients to treatment in Palmerston North each week.

We were fortunate to receive a $35,000 grant from the Weem Trust towards the cost of our shuttle which does in excess of 56,000 kilometres per year. A comfortable, roadworthy vehicle is essential for the service we offer and the generosity of the Trust ensures the service keeps running. n
