Soldier wounded in accident There has been a sharp increase in the number of accidents involving SLTB buses during the first three months of 2011, Ministry of Transport says. “Three hundred and eighty acci- dents have been reported during the first three months of 2011 causing nearly 23 deaths,” Deputy Minister, Transport, Rohana Dissanayaka said. During the corresponding period in 2010, the number of accidents was 326. According to statistics of the Ministry of Transport in 2010 for one million kilometres nearly 1,158 acci- dents were reported. Taking that situation into consider- ation the Ministry of Transport had taken steps to launch a special pro- gramme, ‘Api Oba Surakimu’ from May 1st to 31st to minimise the number of accidents. The main objective of the programme was to boost the image of the Sri Lanka Transport Board, the deputy minister said. He said that at the end of every month the ministry would select the depot with the minimum number of accidents out of all the SLTB depots. (PH) D eputy Education Minister Vijith Vijithamuni Soyza says the government will do away with the Grade Five Scholarship examination in the near future. The Moneragala District MP said that once the government implemented a programme to develop 1,000 schools country, there wouldn’t be a need to continue with the examination. He was responding to a query by UPFA MP Shantha Bandara in Parliament on Tuesday (3). The Deputy Minister said that the Grade Five Scholarship examination was nothing but a burden on those sitting it and their parents. He said that annually about 15,000 students were picked up through that examination to grant scholarships. Unfortunately, it had now become a public nuisance. Outgoing Sri Lankan Ambassador to Italy, President’s Counsel Hemantha Warnakulasuriya had convert- ed the Sri Lankan Embassy in Rome into an exemplary place of service to the thousands of Lankan expatriates living in Italy, Controller of Immigration and Emigration Chulananda Perera said. Addressing a ceremony held at the City Hall in Rome, on April 25, to felicitate the outgoing Ambassador, Perera said that the Lankan Embassy in Rome had been one of the major problems faced by the Department of Immigration and Emigration. Hundreds of Lankan expatriates in Italy had been sending petitions complaining that the Embassy did not look after their affairs and interests. Within three months of assuming office Ambassador Warnakulasuriya had addressed all those prob- lems, cleared the backlog and brought about order out of the mess at Lankan Embassy in Italy,he said. “We are proud to say that we no longer receive complaints or petitions from that country,” Perera said. Amabassador Warankulasuriya introduced revolutionary changes to set up consular document collect- ing offices in Milano and Verona to expedite the service for Lankans living there. The Ambassador had personally visited the Consular office in Verona and streamlined the place so that the consular office now renders a distin- guished service to the Lankan expatriates. To bring these changes he did not spend a single cent from the govern- ment coffers and he saved around 150,000 Euros by bring- ing in discipline and order in those places, Perera added. Chairman of the Sri Lanka Organisation in Italy Ananda Seneviratne said the City Hall was fully packed with Lankans and it was ample evi- dence of the fact of how much the Sri Lankans were going to miss a great person who worked tirelessly for the bene- fit of fellow countrymen living abroad. Hundreds of Lankans remained standing since there were not enough seats in the Hall. “During the last thirty years of my being in Italy, I have never witnessed this number of Lankans gathered in a single place to felicitate any outgoing Ambassador. I came to know that another felicitation ceremony had been scheduled at Milano and one more is being planned in a dif- ferent city by grateful people who have witnessed, for the first time, how much service a diplomat could render for them. All these present here today would attest that Mr. Warnakulasuriya is the best Lankan Ambassador ever to serve in Italy, Seneviratne said.
