New Fraser rules QUEENSLAND authorities haveannounced the introduction ofnew road rules for Fraser Island. Effective from this month, allhire 4WD vehicles must not carrymore than eight occupantsincluding the river, and luggagemust be safely secured inside thevehicle - not on the roof. Heavy loads on the roof canaffect vehicle stability andincrease the chance of the carrolling, particularly on sand, theQld transport department said. And from 31 Dec the rules willbe further tightened to ban side-facing seats in hire 4WDs used onFraser island. All 4WDs must have a maximumtotal of eight either forwardfacing or rear-facing seats, andbe fitted with seatbelts. Private vehicles are exemptfrom the new requirements, but4WD hire operators have beenordered to modify or replace non-complying vehicles. Drivers breaking the rules risk a$300 fine and the loss of 3demerit points from their licence. The speed limits have also beenreduced on the island to 80km/hon beaches and 30km/h intownships and on inland tracks. “Beach driving is dangerous andrequires a high level ofconcentration,” the departmentsaid, adding that the new loaws“should help make it safer fortourists to visit Fraser Island”.
