A YEAR IN THE LIFE

and getting your hands dirty at Volunteer Day.

You spent four hours cheering on UCLA as they dominated USC at the Rose Bowl,

Your year began with dancing the night away at Bruin Bash...

leaving the Trojans soaking in the rain.

Most of us voted in our first presidental election, re-electing President Barack Obama.

Daily Bruin Photo walks you through the highlights of the 2012-2013 school year. Visit dailybruin.com/grad2013/yearinthelife to view your own interactive and personalized “Year in the Life” timeline.

You spent 26 hours on your feet during Dance Marathon, raising $475,422.57 for the Pediatric Aids Coalition at UCLA.

You braved the cold of winter quarter, stripping down to your underwear and racing around campus to relieve stress.

You witnessed the men’s basketball team play its first game in the newly renovated Pauley Pavillion.

Your voice was heard in the USAC elections, as you voted for candidates from three slates.

You heard Bruin Harmony rock Pauley during UCLA’s annual Spring Sping, winning the Best Overall Entry Award.

A few weeks later, you took over the Intramural Field to jam with your friends at the JazzReggae Festival.

Now, you are finishing up your last finals and getting ready to jump into the Inverted Fountain...

or waiting for your chance.

Bringing the The Daily Bruin Photography department decided to put a twist

on a series of well-known UCLA urban legends. These myths have

piqued the interest of incoming UCLA freshman during their

orientation tour, as they attempted to decipher between reality and fic-tion. The following five photo illus-

trations depict what UCLA would be like if the legends were true.

The iconic Janss Steps h ides a dark secret. After a feud over the design of the steps, one of the late Janss broth-ers requested that his body be buried under-neath the sixth step to prevent his brother from remov ing the sta i rs. Since then, stepping on the sixth step has been said to bring bad luck. Decades later, on an eerie summer night, the hand of that same Janss brother pierces through the sixth step.

Back in the ’60s, when The Doors f rontman Jim Morrison attended UCLA, he used a locker on the fourth floor of the Math Sciences Building. Between classes, Mor-rison had a habit of lick-ing LSD-laced stamps and sticking them on the front of his locker. Students have report-ed hearing the ghostly sound of Morrison’s voice echoing through the halls of Math Sciences late at night.

Years ago, a supersti-t ious student fou nd himself in an unfortu-nate situation: He woke up two hours late to a final for a crucial class. Forgetting his lucky rab-bit’s foot in a hurry, the student instead decided to rub the Bruin statue’s paw for good luck. The student aced his final and went on to become an academic urban leg-end. Nowadays, desper-ate students line up on Bruin Walk during finals week in order to receive the paw’s good grace.

The California Highway Patrol began noticing an increase in motor acci-dents after Bunche Hall was constructed. After much investigation, the spike in collisions was attributed to the reflec-tions of sunlight onto the 405 from the building’s windows. To remedy the situation, UCLA rented helicopters to physically rotate the Bunche Hall. This architectural feat is documented on The His-tory Channel’s Modern Marvels.

The Publ ic A f fa i rs building holds a well-kept secret. Unknown to the majority of UCLA undergraduates, on the roof of Public Affairs lies an Olympic-sized swim-m i ng pool , reser ved solely for the leisure of graduate students and professors. Despite the noise produced by the infamous weekly themed parties hosted there, the pool has remained a secret due to its zero undergraduate student tolerance policy.
