Getting to the Convention Center

It takes a lot of patience and generosity to be selected ACBL Goodwill Member of the Year. Nelda Linman of Bend OR says she learned that behavior from the best.

In her 30s, while living in Mexico City where her husband had recently started working, Nelda was asked to help organize a charity bridge game at the American embassy. She knew very little of either bridge or Spanish, but for the role of organizer, she didn’t need to – or so she thought. Then came game time, when a man showed up without a partner. West North East South 1♠ Dbl 2NT Pass 4♠ All Pass

Opening lead: ♦K Bidding commentary: North’s jump

response to 2NT after a takeout double is a popular convention called “Jordan.” It shows limit-raise values – 9-11 support points – with at least four-card support. Following a double, a direct jump to 3♠ is weak. If you mentally replace the ♦A with a low diamond or the ♣K with a low club, you will get an idea of what a jump to 3♠ looks like after a takeout double.

As South, knowing of nine-card spade fit, revalue upwards. The player who receives support, South, adds 2 extra points as a bonus just for the nine-card fit. Additionally, if the long hand contains

a singleton or two doubletons (your hand does) another point is tacked on. Using this method, your hand has blossomed from 15 to 18 points, enough to bid 4♠. If you bid 3♠, partner is supposed to pass.

Defensive commentary: As East, if declarer leads a heart from dummy at trick two, play an honor and switch to a spade to stop heart ruffs in dummy. As West, if declarer mistakenly leads a spade at trick two and exits with a heart, play low, allowing partner to win and play a spade.

Play commentary: As South, your dummy cries out to be used for ruffing hearts. Your plan should be to ruff three hearts in dummy. A heart, not a spade, should be led at trick two. You need those spades in dummy to ruff hearts. Unless you are playing against close friends or relatives, you can expect the opponent who wins your heart exit to lead a spade, because he can see what you are up to. If you play a heart at trick two and ruff your three losing hearts in dummy, you will make an overtrick, losing one heart and one diamond. If you play one round of spades before leading a heart, and they switch to a spade upon taking the first heart, you will lose an extra heart trick. You will still make your game, but you should not be proud of yourself. Finally, if you played two rounds of spades before leading a heart, keep it a deep, dark secret.

Diana Turek-Gever and Hal Gever of Holland PA started playing bridge last year and are playing in their first NABC. “We both retired around the same time and were looking for something we could do together before we got used to going our separate ways,” Hal said. Diana added, “We do a lot of things separately. This is the one thing we do together.”

get it together, and she was surprised to discover she was actually having a good time. After the game, she learned her partner was George Rosenkranz, the person with the most masterpoints in Mexico and the head of the company sponsoring the charity game.

“It was really the best way ever to start playing bridge,” Nelda says. “He was a real gentleman.”

About 25 years later, after settling in Bend, Nelda returned to bridge. She joined the ACBL in 2002, playing at the Cascade Duplicate Bridge Club, where attendance was dwindling. In order to turn things around, they decided to try something new: hold elections. Nelda ran for the unit board and, in 2005, became president for the first of three terms. She started a mentorship program at the club and started mentoring Jan Hart.

“I have never known anyone as excited and enthusiastic about the game of bridge,” Hart said in her nomination letter, one of about a dozen submitted to the ACBL Goodwill Committee on Nelda’s behalf. Hart was surprised that Nelda’s mentorship extended beyond playing at the club to traveling to tournaments. Playing with Nelda meant playing up, and Hart was sometimes intimidated. Once, the two of them came up against Mike Cappelletti, and Hart was so nervous she forgot Stayman. “If my confidence waned, she was always kind with encouraging words,” Hart said.

Now a Sapphire Life Master with more than 5000 masterpoints, Nelda is best known as the driving force behind the Sunriver Regional, first held in 2014, which has since become District 20’s fastest growing regional. “I think she was personally responsible for making it happen,” says Judy Mundt, a district board member who spearheaded the nomination campaign with her husband, Ron. Nelda spent six years lobbying the district board for a regional in the Bend area before it was finally approved. Then, for the next two years before it happened, Nelda encouraged everyone in the unit who traveled to tournaments to personally invite every person they met.

“Everyone worked so hard,” Nelda says. “I had a team of workers for that regional that just wouldn’t quit.”

Along with six years as president of Unit 476, Nelda has also served six years on the Board of Governors, nine on District 20’s board and twice as local chair of the Sunriver Regional. The third Sunriver Regional will be held May 14–20 this year.

The Mundts met Nelda when they started learning bridge nine years ago. “I was so impressed with her friendliness and her willingness to help new players,” Judy said. “And then I got to know her on the board and I got to see what a giving person she is. ... Her willingness to play with players at much lower ability, I think it says a lot about her as a person.”

In 2002, the city of Bend honored Nelda as its volunteer of the year for her service to the local hospice program, which has now been ongoing for 24 years.

Another project Nelda started as unit president was reciprocal housing for coastal Oregon residents to come to Bend’s sectional and hosting Bend residents during Newport’s sectional, which resulted in increased attendance.

“The friendlier you are, the more success you’ll have,” Nelda says. “The more bridge players I meet, the happier I am.”

Bobbie Gomer Friday/Saturday KnockoutsSponsored by Peggy Greenawalt

and Bobbie’s many admirersToday we celebrate ACBL

National Goodwill Committee member, Platinum Life Master, author, PCBA board member and teacher of many decades, Bobbie Gomer.

Over a hundred of Bobbie’s

students have gone on to become Life Masters. Widely known as a gifted entertainer in the classroom whose students never feel forgotten when they venture out into the duplicate arena, Bobbie’s always watching, applauding successes, recommending partners, answering questions and sending beams of love to all her fledglings.

Fran & Al Architzel Friday–Sunday Side SeriesSponsored by Honesdale-Hawley

Duplicate Bridge ClubAl and Fran Architzel founded the Honesdale-

Hawley DBC in 1976. Al and Fran taught in the public schools in the state of New York and Al also worked for the Internal Revenue Service and for the U.S. Agency for International Development. However, most people in northeastern Pennsylvania remember them for their dedicated interest in duplicate bridge. They loved the game and taught many aspiring players. They were members of the Unit 120 board including positions of president, treasurer and secretary, and Al was also a member of the district board.

When Al passed away in 1994, Fran continued organizing and running the club for the enjoyment of its members until her retirement in 1997. Fran was presented with a meritorious service award in recognition of outstanding and dedicated service to Unit 120.

The club continues today, still playing bridge, still teaching new beginners how to enjoy the wonderful game of duplicate bridge.
