He probably didn’t realize it at the time, but Per Jannersten, age 13, was present for a key moment in bridge history – the test of the first bidding box. The scene was his home in Stockholm, Sweden. Per’s father, Eric Jannersten, had invited some experts to play a two-table team game. One of the guests was Gosta Nordenson, who had developed a bidding box prototype. Per remembers that the idea for the box was entirely Nordenson’s: “He wanted to eliminate spoken bidding because your voice reveals your feelings whether you like it or not.” Nordenson’s first model was a kind of ledger with tabs. By the time of the team game at the Jannersten home circa 1961, Nordenson had come up with a different design, a box that sat below table level so that a player could not see it if his partner’s hand moved from one call to another before a final decision was made. At that point, Nordenson had applied for a patent and Eric Jannersten was considering manufacturing the boxes. On the evening of the test, Per says he overheard the adults talking and pronouncing the project viable. A deal was made. Per remembers that it was a complicated arrangement: Jannersten would print the cards for the bidding boxes, provide them to Nordenson, who would put them in plastic boxes he obtained from another source and return the finished product to Jannersten to be sold. JUST FOR NEW PLAYERSWhen partner preempts

When partner opens the bidding with a weak bid, many of my students wonder what, if anything, to do. Remember, opener has a weak hand and assumes she is going down about three tricks.

There are two reasons you might raise a preempt. You can raise with Trash (and extra trumps) or you can raise her to game with a lot of assets, what I refer to in class as “Ka-Chings” (money in the bank)!

First, the Trash raise. Say partner opens 2♥ (a weak two-bid showing a six-card suit) and you hold:♠ 7 ♥Q 9 4 2 ♦J 9 4 3 ♣10 8 4 2

If you and partner have very weak hands, it’s safe to assume that your opponents have a game, maybe even a slam. If partner had known you had so many hearts, she would’ve preempted with 3♥ or 4♥. Even though she did her best to take up the opponents’ bidding room, you need to reach into the bidding box and further the preempt. How much higher should you bid? I would recommend a raise to 4♥ with the given hand. Add your trumps to partner’s (the total is 10 with the example hand) and contract to take that number of tricks – bid 4♥. If you have only three-card trump support (nine trumps total), you would raise to 3♥ (nine tricks).

What if partner opens a three-level preempt such as 3♥? The same equation works if you have a Trash hand:

With two-card support, there are nine total trumps and you are already at 3♥. Pass!

With three-card support (10 total trumps), raise to 4♥.

This is a very homogenized version of what

experts refer to as the Law of Total Tricks. Larry Cohen has written books regarding this popular theory, and some experts think that a few adjustments should be made. It can get very complicated. Non-vulnerable, it’s a fantastic tool. If you’re vulnerable, you might be more cautious. You don’t want to get a minus score that resembles your telephone number.

Let’s look at some good hands, where you think you have enough assets that partner might actually make 4♥. A normal weak two-bid opener figures to take about five tricks witbout any help from partner. A responder planning to bid game on power should contribute five additional tricks (to bring the total to 10).

As responder, I’ve had some quacky 16-point hands that wouldn’t have let partner make game. I’ve also had some 13-point hands that made it easy for her to take ten tricks. The difference is not really about points, it’s about tricks and assets. Using the Ka-Ching theory, let’s look at the assets in this hand after partner open 2♥:♠7 ♥Q 9 4 ♦A K 5 3 2 ♣A 8 6 2

Add up the bonus Ka-Chings: Three quick trick Ka-Chings; one high trump honor Ka-Ching; and at least one ruffing Ka-Ching. I’d be very comfortable in raising a 2♥ opener to 4♥.

Here’s another example:♠K Q J ♥A 3 2 ♦Q J 7 6 ♣Q J 3

I see only about three Ka-Chings in this hand. Partner might not even be able to make 2♥! Note that there are more high-card points in the second hand than the first. The rule of thumb is to look at quick tricks as opposed to quacky points (queens

and jacks) when searching for assets. When someone preempts, we are all guessing

what to do. It’s more art than science and we have to use our judgment and make our best guess. Nothing is guaranteed, but maybe knowing about these Ka-Chings will help.

I would enjoy hearing your favorite anecdotes regarding your attendance here in Seattle. You can reach me by email at [email protected]

Good luck at the bridge table!

Thinking bridge Dlr: South ♠ A 8 5 2 Vul: Both ♥ Q 10 4 ♦ 10 9 8 6 ♣ K Q 4 3 ♠ J 10 7 ♠ 9 ♥ A K 9 8 5 2 ♥ J 7 ♦ J 2 ♦ K Q 5 4 3 ♣ 10 8 ♣ J 9 7 6 5 ♠ K Q 6 4 3 ♥ 6 3 ♦ A 7 ♣ A 2 West North East South 1♠ 2♥ 3♥ Pass 4♠ All Pass

Opening lead: ♥A Bidding commentary: As North, your 3♥

cuebid, showing a limit raise in spades or better, assumes that a jump to 3♠ in competition is preemptive. Most players now play that any jump raise in competition is preemptive. Partner assumes a limit raise for the time being. As South, if you would have accepted a limit raise (you would), bid 4♠ over 3♥. If you wouldn’t have accepted a limit raise, sign off at 3♠.

Defensive commentary: As East, start a high-low with the ♥J at trick one. As West, the ♥J shows a singleton or doubleton. Continue with the ♥K. As it happens, the ♥J was from a doubleton and now the ♥Q in dummy is an established winner. In order to kill the ♥Q before trumps are drawn, lead a third

heart. East ruffs the third heart with the ♠9. Play commentary: As South, do not overruff

the ♠9! It is safer to discard your inevitable diamond loser. If East has ruffed with the singleton 9 (possible) and you overruff, you will wind up losing a trump trick to West — a trick you do not have to lose. Worse, you will go down, losing two hearts, a spade and a diamond. However, if you discard a diamond at trick three, you take the next 10 tricks. Making four.

As a defender, when you have established a trick in dummy upon which declarer, now void in the suit, can take a discard (♥Q) and partner is also void in the suit, lead the suit while partner still has a trump to play to kill the discard.

As declarer, if faced with the choice of overruffing a spot card with an honor card (the ♠9 with the ♠Q) that may weaken your trump holding, discard a sure loser instead if you have one.

New encyclopedia now available

The 7th edition of the Official Encyclopedia of Bridge rolled off the presses in October and is available for purchase at the booksellers at the Convention Center on the fourth floor opposite Exhibition Halls A and B.

The following is a review of the encyclopedia by Larry Cohen. The review is scheduled for publication in the January 2012 Bridge Bulletin.

The Official Encyclopedia of Bridge, 7th edition

Edited by Brent ManleyA treasureThere are many new (better) features in the 7th

edition of the Official Encyclopedia of Bridge. The page size and type size are bigger than the 2001 (6th) edition. Although there are fewer pages, in this case, less is more. The editors have cut out hundreds of pages of biographies and results. Those items can be found on the included (neatly sealed into the back cover) set of two CDs for your computer. Furthermore, such information is easily available from any search engine or on the ACBL web site.

While the omission of biographies could cost some sales (from people who would have purchased the book just to see their names in print), the tradeoff of having more readable information in the 634 pages is well worth it.

While nobody rates to sit down and read an encyclopedia in order, this version has many features that should catch a reader’s attention.

Instead of being organized like a traditional reference book (with all entries in alphabetical order), it is divided into 26 chapters. Many of them (such as History, Hall of Fame, Top players, Trophies, Rule of X and Curiosities) make for a good read — like reading a mini-book or a long magazine article. Some chapters are by necessity lengthy and

intense (Bidding, Conventions, Card Play, and the old bridge encyclopedia classic, 50 pages of Suit Combinations).

A very useful feature is the comprehensive index (sorted by players and by terms). Unfortunately, there were a bunch of omissions in this area…I suppose the software program just couldn’t quite figure out every time, for example, “Bergen” appeared in the various pages (for conventions, bidding theory, tournament victories, books authored, memorable events, etc.).

The complete Laws of Duplicate Bridge are not in the book nor the accompanying CDs, but information is given where to find them online.

One CD contains results and biographies (neatly grouped by category starting with Diamond Life Masters and going up), the other contains something that could be invaluable to bridge writers, teachers, historians, and just general bridge buffs: a pdf version of the entire encyclopedia. You can save a copy on your computer—creating a valuable reference source (just don’t succumb to the temptation to plagiarize without giving credit—or worse, sharing it with members who should purchase their own).

The price ($54.95) might seem steep, but there are 634 pages jammed with photos and information along with those two CDs. Furthermore, there are many ways to obtain the book at a discount. For me, the photos alone are worth the price; previous bridge encyclopedias were picture-less. In addition to the great oldies photos, there are many humorous Bill Buttle animations interspersed with the text.

It’s unlikely anyone will read this huge volume from cover to cover, but it is a tremendous reference book on all aspects of our great game. Left on a coffee table, it is eminently browsable—one could get absorbed in many different sections. Furthermore, it is likely to be a treasured gift item for any bridge aficionado who wasn’t quite ready to shell out the big bucks, but secretly coveted such a treasured archive.

Making an impressionOn this deal from the second final session of

the Nail Life Master Open Pairs, a young player – Allison Howard – made an impression on Gary Cohler with the smoothness of her discards. Cohler was North, Howard East. Dlr: South ♠ A Q J 9 8 7 Vul: N-S ♥ J 3 2 ♦ A 10 ♣ A Q ♠ -- ♠ 6 3 ♥ A Q 10 9 8 6 5 ♥ K 7 ♦ J 7 2 ♦ K 8 6 3 ♣ 8 3 2 ♣ K J 6 5 4 ♠ K 10 5 4 3 ♥ 4 ♦ Q 9 5 4 ♣ 10 9 7 West North East South Pass 4♥ 4♠ All Pass

Howard, of Cookeville TN, led the ♥K, overtaken by Mike Cappelletti Jr. with the ace to shift to a low club. Cohler decided the club finesse was a loser, so he went up with the ace and formulated a plan based on the assumption that East held both minor-suit kings.

After winning the ♣A. Cohler ruffed a heart in dummy, returned to hand with a trump, ruffed another heart in dummy, then ran his trumps.

At the end, Cohler held the ♦A 10 and the ♣Q in hand, so all he had to do was play the ♣Q, putting East in to lead away from her presumed ♦K to present Cohler with a coveted overtrick.

Cohler, however, didn’t reckon with his left-hand opponent, who had discarded down to the singleton ♦K and the ♣K J. When she was thrown in with the club, Howard had the ♣J to cash to hold Cohler to 10 tricks.

What impressed Cohler was that Howard had come down to a singleton ♦K without a flicker of hesitation or concern.

of defeating the slam. North has made a grand slam try, everything is breaking evenly, and my only significant high card looks to be onside for declarer. I’m sure you can see what I chose to lead – the nine of clubs. I expected that declarer would spurn the finesse and I would save the overtrick, with a slim chance that something better might happen if the contract wasn’t quite as secure as I imagined.

This was the full deal: Dlr: East ♠ K Q 6 Vul: E-W ♥ A Q 5 ♦ A K 6 ♣ J 10 8 4 ♠ 9 5 4 ♠ 10 8 2 ♥ 7 6 3 ♥ 9 2 ♦ J 8 7 5 3 ♦ 10 9 2 ♣ K 9 ♣ A 7 5 3 2 ♠ A J 7 3 ♥ K J 10 8 5 ♦ Q 4 ♣ Q 6

Imagine how pleased I was to find partner, David Kendrick, winning the ace and returning a low club to my king for a one-trick set.

Teammates Jan van Cleeff and Bob Drake were also in 6♥ but the contract made on a diamond lead and we picked up 14 IMPs.

Good communicationOn this deal from the second final session of the

Nail Life Master Open Pairs, Billy Miller and Jacob Morgan used a sophisticated defensive convention to earn a near top. Dlr: West ♠ 6 4 3 Vul: Both ♥ 8 5 ♦ Q 6 4 2 ♣ Q J 6 4 ♠ K Q 9 ♠ J 10 5 2 ♥ 9 7 3 ♥ Q J 10 2 ♦ J 10 8 7 ♦ A 3 ♣ K 10 9 ♣ A 8 2 ♠ A 8 7 ♥ A K 6 4 ♦ K 9 5 ♣ 7 5 3 West North East South Pass Pass 1♣ Dbl 1NT All Pass

Miller, North, led the ♦2, ducked by declarer. Morgan won the ♦K and continued with the 9 to dummy’s ace.

The two play reverse Smith Echo, a defensive convention allowing either player to show whether the suit started by the opening leader should be continued when the opportunity arises.

Miller deduced that, based on Morgan’s return of the ♦9 at trick two, that diamonds was not going to be significant source of tricks for his side. Miller’s spot cards were rather weak, so he didn’t want Morgan to play more diamonds if he got in next.

So when declarer played a spade to the king a trick there, Miller started an echo by playing the ♠6. In the original version of Smith, either defender could play high-low to say the opening lead hit declarer’s soft spot. In reverse Smith, high-low says don’t continue the suit.

Miller completed the echo when declarer played the ♠Q from hand, so when Morgan took the ♠A, instead of continuing with a diamond, he got out with the ♣7: 9, jack, ace. Declarer next played the ♥Q, taken by Morgan with the ace. On the club continuation, declarer was doomed. He put in the ♣10, but Miller won the queen and cleared the suit, so when Morgan got in again with a heart, he could play a diamond to Miller’s queen. The 13th club was the setting trick. Plus 100 was good for 61 matchpoints out of 64 for Miller and Morgan.

Life Master newsOne team produced two new Life Masters

playing in the bracketed knockouts yesterday. First Sue Dodson, Bellingham WA, got the gold points she needed. Then, in the second session, Tracey Meek, also from Bellingham WA, got the gold points she needed. Sue and Tracey were playing with Mike Dodson and Toni Taft from Bellingham WA and Tami McHugh, Boise ID. (Toni and Tami, incidentally, are twins.)

Husband and wife Tom Colwell and Paula Colwell earned their gold cards together in the bracketed knockouts on Sunday. The Colwells traveled to Seattle all the way from Deer Isle ME.

The market for the bidding boxes was not strong at first, in part because only the “upper class” played bridge at that time. To remedy that, the energetic Eric set out to create a market among the lower classes, traveling around Sweden teaching people to play bridge, following later by teaching them how to run bridge clubs.

When they were ready, he had all equipment they needed to run their games.

The big breakthrough came in 1970, when the World Bridge Championships were scheduled for Stockholm. Per remembers that it took a lot of lobbying to convince the World Bridge Federation not to veto the Swedes’ plans for using bidding boxes at the tournament.

Another first at the tournament was running the pairs events barometer style – everyone played the same hands at the same time.

The use of the bidding boxes at the world championship boosted their acceptance. In the early Seventies, Per was running the family business and he bought the patent for the bidding boxes from Nordenson. “There was still good potential in the product,” he recalls, “and we were better positioned to sell them worldwide.”

About 1980, the design for the boxes was changed to make them suitable to sit on top of the table. Per recalls cutting one of the old boxes in two in the basement of his home in the city of Avesta, where Jannersten Forlag, as the company is known today, still has a warehouse.

About a year before his father’s death in 1982, Per had become more involved in running Jannersten Forlag despite obligations to Jannersten Print, a business he started in 1972. Per sold one of his two printing plants in 1981 and the other in 1984.

Today, Jannersten Forlag is the world’s largest manufacturer of bridge equipment, including Duplimate, playing cards and a wireless scoring device called Bridge Scorer.

Jannersten says that when it came to acceptance of bidding boxes, “ACBL was a hard nut.” It was 30 years after the invention of the devices before they were used at an NABC. Jannersten estimates that there are “hundreds of thousands” of his bidding boxes in use in virtually every country where bridge is not prohibited by the government, as is the case, for example, in North Korea and Iran.

Per remembers his father as an indefatigable worker, “burning the candle at both ends,” and “more of a writer and less of a businessman.” Eric wrote books and started and closed a bridge magazine twice before finally establishing Bridgetidningen in 1939. The magazine is still published and is second only to The Bridge World for consecutive years of publication.

Jannersten Forlag does not have a serious competitor for the bidding boxes, in part because they are made to last with tough, nearly indestructible plastic. The boxes have been manufactured that way from the beginning, he says. “We don’t buy and throw away – we buy and maintain. It’s part of the culture.”

Per Jannersten will host a free seminar on the Duplimate on Tuesday, Nov. 29, at 9:30 a.m. at the Sheraton, Revenna B. See the ad on page 20.

A CELEBRATION OF LIFEIN MEMORY OF NADINE WOOD

Monday, 28 November 2011, following the evening sessionNadine Wood, a dear friend and tireless

volunteer to the game of bridge, passed away suddenly in August, leaving all who knew her saddened and in shock. A Celebration of Life was held locally in Maryland in September and many friends came from far away to pay tribute to this great lady, the “Matriarch of District 6.”

We wanted to give those of you who knew her, whether you were able to come to Maryland

or not, an opportunity in Seattle to remember Nadine—to join friends and family in recounting fond memories and, of course, indulging in a bit of hospitality. Nadine’s husband, Roland; her brother-in-law; and three nephews will all be there to share the family side of Nadine with you as you will share the bridge memories with them.

If you knew Nadine and would like to join us on Monday night the 28th after the evening

session, please come by the ACBL Bulletin Office, room 604 of the Convention Center, and record your RSVP on the list outside the door. The Celebration of Life will be held in the Metropolitan B room on the 3rd floor of the Sheraton.

Bid Box Alerts and Announcements

When using bid boxes, the ACBL requires that players tap the Alert strip and say “Alert” at the same time.

When making an Announcement, use the Announcement word (such as “transfer”) and tap the Alert strip at the same time.

A player who Alerts or Announces a bid must make sure his opponents are aware that an Alert or Announcement has been made.

Monday InsiderIt was another great day in Seattle! The players

coming from the Red Lion for the 9 a.m. game had to fight through a 5K run. First a parade, then a road race, what’s next, the S.C. motorcade? Head Honcho Hartman (trial CEO moniker # 2) made it through his first Board of Governors meeting. It was yet another uneventful meeting, J.S. of Montreal, where are you?

The Argosy Newcomer game sets sail this morning. This is a new NABC experience, thank you, Judge John. You championed this idea when most everyone else thought it was crazy. The naysayers were wrong! It sold out and ended up with a waiting list. The Insider is sure all the cruisers will love it. But, remember; no salmon fishing during the hospitality break. Speaking of fishing, AMG is headed down to the fish market tomorrow hoping she’ll get to throw a fish. The Insider will provide her ETA in the Tuesday Bulletin so all her friends can go watch.

Keep playing. Keep racking up your points. And, today make an extra effort to be nice – it is Goodwill Day. Use “please” when you call the director. Be friendly to the caddy – (or your scoring device if you can’t find a caddy). Treat your opponents with respect. Your partner deserves the same treatment you expect. If there is any doubt in your mind how you should behave, simply ask yourself, “What would the S.C. do?” and do the opposite.

clutzy.” His neurological health is a different matter

entirely. “I lost pretty much half my brain,” he says. “My short-term memory is nothing.” He also lost half of his eyesight. “It’s fine on the left, but from the center to the right, things don’t register.”

Bridge, he affirms, has been a fundamental tool in rebuilding his mental acuity. “Bridge helps me concentrate and relax. Min (Ross’s wife of 41 years) insists that I play as much as possible.”

In addition to getting to one NABC a year -- generally the West Coast tournament closest to his home in Oakland – Ross plays bridge online on Bridge Base one or two hours a day.

Min’s parents are from China, Ross says, and when they met him, they called him “Mr. Huge Loss.” “That was just too good not to use,” he smiles. So he made HugeLoss his handle on BBO.

Ross’s short-term memory impairment doesn’t affect his card play as much as one might imagine. “Interest level has a lot to do with retention,” he conjectures. Remembering people’s names, on the other hand, is particularly difficult for him. “If I work really hard, I can get it to stick.”

When asked what he considers the high point of a celebrated bridge career, there is a long pause. Clearly, he is not having trouble remembering a thing; rather, he is recalling and relishing it all with quiet appreciation. Then he says, “My first world championship in 1976.”

While Ross understands that he’ll never be able to play at the level he once played, he seems unbothered. “I enjoy the game.”

Ear to the groundListening to the bidding is an important facet

of card play. Eric Rodwell made the most of what the bidding told him on this deal from the first final session of the 1993 Life Master Open Pairs. Rodwell was playing with Doug Simson of Columbus OH. Dlr: South ♠ 9 5 Vul: None ♥ K J 7 5 ♦ A K 8 ♣ J 7 6 5 ♠ J 8 4 ♠ A K Q 3 2 ♥ Q 2 ♥ 6 3 ♦ J 10 7 6 5 4 ♦ Q 9 2 ♣ K 9 ♣ Q 8 3 ♠ 10 7 6 ♥ A 10 9 8 4 ♦ 3 ♣ A 10 4 2

West North East South West Simson East Rodwell 1♦(1) 1♠ 2♥(2) 2♠ Dbl(3) Pass 3♣(4) Pass 4♥ All Pass

(1) Precision: 2+ diamonds, 11-15 HCP.(2) Natural and non-forcing.(3) Good heart raise.(4) Random game try.The 1♠ overcall on his right and the spade raise

on his left gave Rodwell a picture of spade shortness in Simson’s hand, making Rodwell’s three low spades look like an asset rather than a debit.

The 20-point game was reached and it was up to Rodwell to take 10 tricks. West led a spade and East cashed the king and ace before switching to a low club. Rodwell ducked, West won the king and returned the ♣9. That suit was solved. Now Rodwell had to decide what to do about trumps.

He cashed the top two diamonds and ruffed a diamond, noting the fall of the queen, and ruffed his last spade low in dummy. West appeared to have started with three spades, six diamonds and two clubs, leaving him only two hearts. Rodwell played the ♥J from dummy, covering with the ace, and played another heart. West’s queen popped up and Rodwell claimed. Plus 420 was worth 41 out of 51 matchpoints.

The club switch at trick three was helpful because Rodwell had poor spots, but he could have made the contract even without that assistance, although he would have had to play for trumps to be 2-2. Say East played three rounds of spades, forcing Rodwell to ruff in dummy. Declarer could then cash the top two trumps, felling the queen, followed by the top two diamonds for a club pitch, then a diamond ruff. Playing one opponent for a doubleton club honor, Rodwell could then cash the ♣A and exit with a club. Because Rodwell had the ♣10, neither player with a doubleton honor could unblock under the ace to good effect.

On the lie of the cards, West (if he didn’t unblock) would be in and forced to play a diamond, allowing Rodwell to ruff in dummy and pitch his last club.

Small mistake, big punishment

Brian Glubok made an opposing defender pay dearly for his error on this deal from the second final session of the 1993 Life Master Open Pairs. Glubok was playing with Chris Compton. Dlr: West ♠ Q 7 Vul: Both ♥ Q 7 5 3 ♦ 4 3 2 ♣ K Q 8 5 ♠ A 8 5 3 2 ♠ K 10 ♥ J ♥ A K 9 8 6 4 2 ♦ J 9 6 ♦ K Q 5 ♣ A J 7 3 ♣ 9 ♠ J 9 6 4 ♥ 10 ♦ A 10 8 7 ♣ 10 6 4 2 West North East South Compton North Glubok South 1♠ Pass 2♥ Pass 2♠ Pass 3♦ Pass 3NT Pass 4♥ All Pass

South led a low club, taken in dummy. Glubok played the ♥J and rode it, noting the fall of the 10 from South. Next Glubok ruffed a club and, just to make sure about trumps, cashed the ♥A. He followed with the ♦Q, hoping this would induce either player to take the ace on the first round. South won and fell from grace by playing a third round of clubs - just what Glubok wanted.

Declarer ruffed, cashed the ♦K and played a diamond to dummy’s jack. After Glubok ruffed the fourth round of clubs, this was the position: ♠ Q 7 ♥ Q 7 ♦ - ♣ - ♠ A 8 5 3 ♠ K 10 ♥ - ♥ K 9 ♦ - ♦ - ♣ - ♣ - ♠ J 9 6 ♥ - ♦ 10 ♣ -

Page 13: Daily Bulletin - Amazon S3 · Daily Bulletin Monday, November 28, 2011 Volume 84, Number 4 84th North American Bridge Championships Editors: Brent Manley and Sue Munday ... seminars

Page 13Daily Bulletin

Glubok played the ♠K and a spade to the ace, catching North in a trump coup. Had South not played the third round of clubs, Glubok would not have been able to reduce his trumps to the same length as North and would have finished with only 11 tricks. South’s seemingly small mistake left his side with only 1 out of 51 matchpoints.

Lord Yarborough speaksEndplays and scoring a trump en passant are

not unusual. However, both techniques along with a Yarborough made this deal from the 1993 Seattle NABC very unusual. Dlr: East ♠ A J Vul: E-W ♥ K Q J ♦ 10 7 5 3 ♣ K 10 8 6 ♠ K 5 4 2 ♠ 8 7 6 3 ♥ 10 ♥ 9 7 6 4 2 ♦ A K Q ♦ 8 6 2 ♣ A Q J 4 3 ♣ 9 ♠ Q 10 9 ♥ A 8 5 3 ♦ J 9 4 ♣ 7 5 2 West North East South Roeder Swearingen Popper Pass Pass 1♣ 1NT(1) Pass Pass 2♠ Pass Pass 2NT Pass Pass 3♠(2) Dbl All Pass

(1) Only 14 high-card points, but promoting positional value of club holding.

(2) Undaunted by vulnerability and showing great confidence in partner’s dummy play.

West opened the ♥K and continued hearts. San Diego’s Rick Roeder ruffed. Roeder played ♣A, ♣Q, covered by the king and ruffed. A heart ruff was followed by ♣J and three rounds of diamonds.

Roeder had eight tricks when he led the ♣4 in this end position: ♠ A J ♥ - ♦ 10 ♣ 10 ♠ K 5 ♠ 8 7 6 ♥ - ♥ 9 ♦ - ♦ - ♣ 4 3 ♣ - ♠ Q 10 9 ♥ A ♦ - ♣ -

Roeder pitched dummy’s last heart and South faced an insoluble dilemma. He finally decided to pitch the ♥A, so Roeder promptly claimed his ninth trick. Suppose South ruffs instead. If South returns the ♥A, Roeder pitches his last club, North is forced to ruff with the ♠J and Roeder will come to his ♠K.

South’s best shot is to ruff partner’s good club and lead a trump. If West carelessly plays the ♠K, North wins the ♠A and the defense scores the last two tricks on a high crossruff.

But declarer prevails on the defense if he plays the ♠5. North wins the ♠J and is helpless. If North plays the ♠A, crashing Roeder’s ♠K, dummy’s 8 wins trick 13. If North plays the ♦10 after winning the ♠J, Roeder scores the ♠K at trick 12.

Did South err by not overtaking the ♥K at trick one and firing back a trump? As long as Roeder does not pop the ♠K (and it is impossible for this to be right if the 1NT overcall is to be trusted), he will prevail with careful play.

Devastating duckIn this deal from the 1993 Reisinger Board-a-

Match Teams, Al Rand bared his king of trumps by ducking, then set the slam contract two tricks when declarer failed to see what Rand was doing.

Dlr: South ♠ 7 5 3 Vul: E-W ♥ K J 5 3 ♦ J 9 2 ♣ J 7 3 ♠ 9 6 ♠ A Q J 10 8 2 ♥ A 9 8 7 ♥ Q 2 ♦ A K Q 10 7 6 5 ♦ 8 3 ♣ - ♣ Q 10 9 ♠ K 4 ♥ 10 6 4 ♦ 4 ♣ A K 8 6 5 4 2 West North East South Rand 3♣ 3♦ 4♣ 4♠ 5♣ 5♦ 6♣ 6♠ Pass Pass Double All Pass

The bidding convinced Rand that one of his opponents had a void in clubs, so he led his singleton diamond instead of a top club. Declarer took this and passed the ♠9, which Rand ducked smoothly. Declarer, suspecting nothing, took a second trump finesse, and the roof fell in. Rand took his king and quickly cashed two clubs.

If declarer had read Rand’s mind and gone up with the ace on the second trump lead, he would have taken all 13 tricks. But he wound up with only 10.

Triple playEric Greco took advantage of a slip by the

defense to rake in most of the matchpoints on this deal from the 1993 Blue Ribbon Pairs. Greco was playing with Bill Cole. Dlr: South ♠ J 4 Vul: E-W ♥ J 10 9 ♦ 8 6 4 2 ♣ J 10 3 2 ♠ A 10 7 5 2 ♠ K 9 ♥ 7 3 ♥ A K Q 8 6 5 2 ♦ 10 5 3 ♦ K Q ♣ Q 8 7 ♣ 6 5 ♠ Q 8 6 3 ♥ 4 ♦ A J 9 7 ♣ A K 9 4 West North East South Cole Greco 1♦ Pass Pass 3♥ Pass 4♥ All Pass

South could have earned his side most of the matchpoints by cashing his three tricks - two high clubs and the ♦A. South fell from grace in a big way, however. He started with the ♣K and, apparently hoping for a set, underled his ♦A. Greco took full

advantage of the error, winning with the king and running all his trumps to inflict a triple repeating squeeze on the hapless defender in the South seat. This was the five-card ending: ♠ J 4 ♥ - ♦ 8 ♣ J 10 ♠ A 10 7 5 ♠ K 9 ♥ - ♥ 2 ♦ - ♦ Q ♣ Q ♣ 6 ♠ Q 8 6 ♥ - ♦ A ♣ A

East led his last heart and South was done. If he discarded a spade, dummy’s spades would all be good. Pitching an ace was equally fatal. If South tossed the ♦A, Greco could cash the ♦Q, squeezing South between spades and the ♣A. If South pitched the ♣A, Greco would lead a club to dummy, squeezing South between spades and the ♦A.

Greco’s adept play earned his side 24 of 25 matchpoints.

Convention card reminderEach player is required to have a convention

card filled out legibly and on the table throughout a session. Both cards of a partnership must be identical and include the first and last names of each member of the partnership.

If a director determines that neither player has a substantially completed card, the partnership may play only the Standard American Yellow Card and may use only standard carding. This restriction may be lifted only at the beginning of a subsequent round after convention cards have been properly prepared and approved by the director. Further, the partnership will receive a 1/6-board matchpoint penalty for each board played, commencing with the next round and continuing until the restriction is lifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be at the discretion of the director.

If the director determines the partnership has at least one substantially completed convention card but has not fully complied with ACBL regulations, the director may give warnings or assign such penalties as he deems to be appropriate under the circumstances.

The objective of these warnings and penalties is the encouragement of full compliance with ACBL regulations.

NABC DiaryDrijving hardAccording to Jan van

Cleeff, two members of the Italian team that competed in the world championships in the Netherlands recently were spotted in the fitness center

at the Sheraton, huffing and puffing on the exercise machinery.

When asked why they were working out, one of the Italians replied, “We want to look like Brink and Drijver and get the Bermuda Bowl back.”

That was a reference to Sjoert Brink and Bas Drijver, two members of the young Dutch team that won the Bermuda Bowl in Veldhoven, Netherlands, in October. On their way to the title, the Netherlands defeated Italy in the semifinal round.

Tiptoe through the runnersSpeaking of exercise, Tournament Director Bob

Craig of El Paso TX had to ad lib on Sunday morning when he attempted to cross Fifth Street in downtown Seattle. It seems that the Amica Insurance Seattle Marathon was in progress and runners filled the street he was trying to cross.

After waiting for some time, Craig came up with a plan. He jumped out into the street and started moving with the runners – sort of running – as he slowly and gradually inched his way across the street.

There was no report on Craig’s finish time.

American Swiss Teams that was published in Daily Bulletin No. 1 should have included Chuck Said, who was a member of that squad.

The phantom appearsBarry Rigal has been providing excellent reports

on bridge play at NABCs for many years now, including the summer tournament in Toronto and in Seattle. Some of his work has appeared in the Seattle Daily Bulletin already.

Sue Munday, associate editor of the ACBL Bridge Bulletin, worked on the Daily Bulletin at Toronto and is a Daily Bulletin editor in Seattle. Somehow, at both venues, the two had never been in the office at the same time.

That caused Munday to question Rigal’s existence. “He’s a ghost,” she insisted – at least until Rigal walked into the Daily Bulletin office on Sunday afternoon.

Munday promptly rushed over to Rigal and gave him the once-over to certify that there really is a person attached to the name. Rigal was relieved at the pronouncement that he is an actual person.

Wild thingThis deal from the second final session of the

Nail Life Master Open Pairs and the Young Life Master Women’s Pairs no doubt caused a lot of talk – and it definitely produced a lot of different results. Dlr: North ♠ A 7 Vul: None ♥ A Q 7 6 5 4 ♦ K 9 4 ♣ A 6 ♠ Q 4 ♠ 6 3 ♥ J 3 2 ♥ K 10 9 8 ♦ 3 2 ♦ 10 5 ♣ 9 8 5 4 3 2 ♣ K Q J 10 7 ♠ K J 10 9 8 5 2 ♥ -- ♦ A Q J 8 7 6 ♣ --

As you can see, North-South can make 7♦, 7♠ or 7NT, the latter two requiring a successful guess in spades. As you might imagine, the results from the seven sections in which the board was played were all over the place.

The most popular result was plus 1010 (6♠ making seven), achieved by more than 30 pairs, followed by 12 scores of plus 1440 (7♦, making).

There were no grand slams bid in the women’s event, but six pairs in the open game achieved plus 1510 for 7♠. Six pairs, all in the open game, went plus 1510 for 7♠. Two pairs bid 6NT, taking all the tricks for plus 1020.

The worst score was minus 100 for a zero in the women’s event, followed by minus 150 which two pairs suffered in the open game for half a matchpoint each.

No doubt the result that hurt the most was plus 260 for the pair in the open event who didn’t even get to game.

In all, there were 13 different scores – plus and minus – on the board. Plus 1510 got the highest score: 61.5 out of 64.

Electronic Device Policy1. For all NABC+

rated events at NABCs: Electronic devices, including but not limited to, phones, cameras, PDAs, and others capable of sending or receiving electronic communication are excluded from the playing areas during any session of play. This does not apply to health-related equipment.

2. For all events at an NABC other than a NABC+ rated event: Except for health-related equipment, or by permission of the Director-in-Charge of the tournament, cell phones, audible pagers or similar equipment may not be operated or operable in any manner in the playing area during a session of play. Any such equipment must not be visible during the session. Sponsoring organizations of other ACBL-sanctioned events are encouraged to adopt a similar policy.

3. These restrictions in numbers 1 and 2 above apply to all pairs, team members, captains, coaches, play recorders (except those designated by ACBL) and kibitzers and are in force throughout any actual playing session or segment of play.

4. A violation of any of the restrictions in numbers 1 and 2 above will result in a disciplinary penalty of one full board (12 IMPs at that form of scoring) for the first offense. A second offense will result in disqualification from the event for the pair/team. Kibitzers violating this policy will be removed from the playing area for the remainder of the session.

SeaSharps QuartetThe SeaSharps were formed as a registered

Barbershop Quartet in 2003. The group has a wide-ranging repertoire of songs from the Twenties through the Sixties, with ballads and up-tunes and gospel songs – and they also perform Christmas songs for the holidays. They have preformed on the Snow Train to Leavenworth for the past five years.

The SeaSharps will perform tonight at 11 p.m. in Ballroom 6A at the Convention Center.

Sunday Nov. 27 SponsorsJoe and Shirley Jabon Memorial

Stratified Open PairsJoe and Shirley were among the most

prominent couples on the Seattle bridge scene. Their contributions to the game of bridge were significant, whether it was their legendary parties, their development and sponsorship of what is now Seattle’s Only Bridge Burlesque or their bridge achievements.

Joe spent his early years in New Orleans. At about age 15, he was one of the original Quiz Kids. He attended Tulane University, where he discovered bridge and developed a partnership with Sidney Lazard. Upon his arrival in Seattle in the 1950s, he immediately became one of the leading players. He originated bridge plays and burlesques beginning with “My Fair Partner,” which he developed, performed in, and for which he wrote the lyrics. Joe was active in Seattle bridge activities and served as

president during his years on the unit board. He also served on the District 19 board.

Joe created and provided the Jabon Bridge Trophy, awarded annually to the newcomer (0-20 masterpoints) who wins the most masterpoints at Seattle sectional tournaments.

Shirley, arguably the social grand dame of Seattle bridge, believed that social interaction and camaraderie were as much a part of bridge as the game itself. It was in that spirit that volunteer work on countless committees at all levels predominated in her bridge activities One of her greatest commitments was to the Jabon Players, which eventually became Seattle’s Only Bridge Burlesque. Her organizational and social skills were indispensable to its growth and success.

Bill Flaherty Memorial Stratified Side B-A-M Teams

William “Bill” Flaherty was the seventh of eight children born to Dr. Richard and Madeline Flaherty. He was raised in Spokane and graduated from Gonzaga Prep and Eastern Washington University.

Bill was a well-known player on the Pacific Northwest bridge scene for more than 40 years including his 20-residence in the Seattle area. He was an avid competitor, a consummate gentleman, and a great friend to a continually-increasing number of players. Bill’s advice to his close bridge friends was: (a) the opponents are irrelevant; (b) be slow to anger; (c) the best revenge on distasteful opponents is to declare one trick better, double and beat them, and when they double you, make your contract.

His successes were numerous and ongoing with a wide-range of partners and teammates, including a win in the final regional championship that he contested before his death at age sixty-three

Janet Daling Stratified Open Pairs by Diane Setterholm

Janet Daling was born in New Jersey, and lived in various states from Maine to Texas before settling in Washington, where she earned her PhD in Epidemiology at the University of Washington in 1977. For 30 years, Dr. Daling taught at the University of Washington where she is Professor Emeritus.

She also conducted research at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC) in Seattle, focusing predominately on breast cancer until retiring in 2008. During her career Janet published approximately 400 medical papers and has been awarded numerous professional honors including the Outstanding Alumni for the year 1994 by the

University of Washington School of Public Health and Community Medicine, and the Donovan J. Thompson Excellence in Faculty Mentoring Award from the FHCRC Division of Public Health Sciences in 2000. This year, the Fifth Annual American Association for Cancer Research Award was given to her and a team of internationally renowned molecular biologists, epidemiologists, biostatisticians, and clinicians from FHCRC and the University of Washington for their years of efforts which have played a vital role in understanding HPV virus and in the development of the HPV vaccine.

Janet’s love of bridge began almost 50 years ago. She is a Platinum Life Master with more than 18,000 masterpoints. She has numerous regional wins, and has placed second in two NABC events. She feels her main contribution to Seattle bridge during her professional career was hiring more than 30 local bridge players for various positions on her studies at the cancer center.

After spending winters in Arizona for a number of years, Janet recently made Sun Lakes AZ her permanent home. She enjoys playing bridge at the community bridge club there, but continues to attend many ACBL tournaments around the U.S.

Janet has one son and is a devoted Grandma to two grandsons and 2 great grandchildren. Because all of them reside in Eastern Washington, she returns to the Northwest frequently.

Dean and Betty CornDean and Betty Corn bought the Walla Walla

Friday Night Bridge Club game for one dollar and ran it for a dozen fun years. They sold it for one dollar in 1993. Amassing 700 black, silver and red points, they never made Life Master, but they were masters of quality lives.

Caroline Yurovchak Memorial Stratified Daylight Open Pairs

A game player since childhood, Caroline “Carrie” Yurovchak discovered bridge in the mid-1940s and began playing duplicate with a foursome who traveled to Mount Vernon in 1946. In 1948, Carrie and her husband Andy helped found the Bellingham Club. She finished first on the club’s initial night of play. She continued to be a club member until her death.

A longtime Life Master, Carrie played every Bellingham sectional and participated in national and regional tournament events in St. Louis, Portland, Seattle, Vancouver and Hawaii (twice). She even included bridge in her travels to Estonia and Czechoslovakia.

At the age of 93, Carrie continued to play duplicate three times a week and rubber bridge four times a week, playing with the same competitiveness and zeal she had always displayed for the game.

Carrie played bridge last month on a Friday afternoon at the Lakeway Club, went out to dinner and played Saturday evening with a large group of bridge friends. She died the next morning. Carrie left this life doing what she loved. She was a fantastic lady.

Frank Cady Memorial Strati-Flighted Side Swiss Teams

Frank Cady graduated from Queen Anne High School in Seattle and later the University of Washington with an engineering degree. Frank was a very social person, one who had a knack for putting all in his presence at ease. Frank loved family activities and, apart from bridge, he was an avid fisherman and golfer. His experiences generated a range of stories and anecdotes that still stir the memories of those who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Frank was a prominent player in Northwest bridge for more than 40 years and half of a number of partnerships - ones marked as much by their pleasant manner as their ongoing success. Frank’s light and

enjoyable approach to the game made encounters with him a pleasure, independent of the match outcome. He mentored all levels of players with the same courtesy and humor he exhibited in all of his bridge activities.

Miles Adkins Memorial/Coulee City Strati-Flighted Pairs

Miles had three joys in life: bridge, football and politics. He became Life Master number 6359 in August 1965, and is listed in the ACBL Lifetime Top 500.

Miles was a lifelong resident of Coulee City WA, and a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge.
